Worst in the World: The Reina de Reinas Championship Four-Way-AAA Triplemanía XXV

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl...

Worst in the World: Rayo de Jalisco Jr. vs Blue Demon Jr.-AAA Triplemanía XXX: Monterrey

(NOTE: Hey everyone, I just wanted to remind you that, for the entire month of April, I'll be upping my schedule to once a week, starting this Sunday. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy!) All and all, 2022 was a pretty damn good year wrestling-wise. We saw Ring of Honor return under Tony Khan's management and give us an excellent trilogy between FTR and the Briscoes, AEW and New Japan continue to put on some top-notch in-ring work, Cody Rhodes giving one of the gutsiest performances in wrestling history against Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell, and guys like Konosuke Takeshita and Josh Alexander quietly put themselves in the Wrestler of the Year conversation. On top of that, there really weren't that many truly awful matches, as no matches got lower than a 1/10 rating on Cagematch.net, and only one match got a DUD or lower rating from Dave Meltzer. That one match was Vince McMahon vs Pat McAfee from night 2 of WrestleMania 38, which received a negative two-star rating...

Worst in the World: Los Villanos vs Los Psycho Circus-Triplemania XXIII

Ladies and gentlemen...the worst match of 2015. Yes, this match had the dishonor of being named the Worst Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and was completely panned by Dave Meltzer. The match was so bad, in fact, that Meltzer gave it MINUS. FIVE. STARS. The first match he's given that too since 1999. By his standards, this match is worse than That Jackie Gayda match, worse than Sting vs Jeff Hardy at Victory Road, and worse than Survivor Jenna's match. That's how bad this was for him. Coming from Mexico's AAA promotion, and from Triplemania XXIII, which got voted the Worst Major Wrestling Show of 2015, this is Los Villanos vs Los Psycho Circus. Right off the bat, and I mean as soon the match starts, there are already technical issues. You can barely hear commentator Matt Striker, which leaves you with Hugo Savinovich. I don't know if this was just an off night, but he was awful. He can't seem to get any lines off without stuttering a...

My 2015 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards Choices

Every year, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter chooses some of the best and worst of professional wrestling (and to a lesser extent, mixed martial arts) for the year. Voted on by the readers of the newsletter, the awards range from singular awards, such as Most Outstanding Wrestler and Most Improved, to group awards, such as Tag Team of the Year or Rivalry of the Year, and awards for companies themselves, such as Promotion of the Year and Best Major Show. The awards also feature dubious awards, such as Most Overrated and Worst Worked Match of the Year. I thought I'd give my thoughts on who and what the winners of each award should be. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage since I'm not too familiar with some big promotions like Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling (especially New Japan), so this  So here are my (Not) Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards. Note: There are some awards the WON (do people use that acronym?) has that I don't really feel I can make a good ch...
