Worst in the World: The Reina de Reinas Championship Four-Way-AAA Triplemanía XXV

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly.

In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star.
Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestling primarily in Asistencia Asesoria y Administracion (the future Lucha Libre AAA World Wide) and almost exclusively in Mexico. That was until she signed on for Lucha Underground. Debuting on the premiere episode, Sexy Star stood out as one of the few female wrestlers on a roster of primarily male wrestlers. Over the course of three seasons, Sexy Star would find a lot of success in Lucha Underground, first winning the Gift of the Gods Championship before going on to win Aztec Warfare III (the show's version of the Royal Rumble, but with pins & submissions) and the Lucha Underground Championship. Sexy Star was the only woman to hold the show's top title, and Lucha Underground would be the most prominent company a woman had held the top title in until Tessa Blanchard won the Impact World Championship in 2020. Side note that kind of gives away where I'm going with this, the fact that two of the biggest milestones in women's wrestling were done by two women who are shitty people is very disappointing. Following the third season of Lucha Underground, the sky seemed like the limit for Sexy Star. However, seven years later, Sexy Star's wrestling career is just about dead. What happened to Sexy Star? Well, since I looked at one wrestler shooting on another wrestler two weeks ago, we might as well stay on the topic.
Rewind back to 2017, when AAA held Triplemanía XXV. In the second match on the card Sexy Star, who had just returned to the company a month prior, defended the Reina de Reinas Championship in a four-way match against former TNA wrestler Ayako Hamada, Lady Shani, and current Impact wrestler Rosemary, who was brought in as part of a partnership with Global Force Wrestling (which Impact was briefly known as following a merge with Jeff Jarrett's original GFW.) Remember that last name, it will be important for later. Sexy Star had won the vacant title after a messy split between AAA and then-champion Taya (Valkyrie), with the company's Director of Talent Vampiro claiming Taya was stripped of the title for using an illegal chokehold (in a no-disqualification match) and later for no-showing a TV taping (that she apparently was scheduled to be at), while the Wrestling Observer has reported that AAA tricked Taya's then-boyfriend (now husband) Johnny Mundo into giving them the physical belt, only to vacate the title. That, however, would not be the most controversial thing to happen with the Reina de Reinas Championship in 2017. Not by a long shot.
This match is far less infamous for what happens during the actual match, and more for what happens after it. A little over a week after Triplemanía, Sexy Star would be stripped of the title, and would never wrestle for AAA again (the Sexy Star that currently wrestles in AAA is a different wrestler.) In addition, Sexy Star would receive pretty unanimous condemnation, with Cody Rhodes saying she'd never be allowed in one of his locker rooms and multiple people calling for her to be blacklisted. While she hasn't been completely blackballed, any chance she had of working for a major company, or even a major independent, was out the window. WrestleCade would pull her from that year's events, SHIMMER Women Athletes would quietly cut ties with her after only about five months and three matches, and she was notably absent from Season 4 of Lucha Underground. All of that because of her post-match actions. You would be hard-pressed to find a wrestler who effectively derailed their own career in the ring like Sexy Star did on August 26th, 2017. So, let's take a look at how she did it.
Lady Shani immediately tries to clothesline Sexy Star, but Star ducks it. Sexy Star can't avoid a right hand from Ayako Hamada, which is followed by Rosemary giving her a German suplex. Sexy Star rolls out of the ring, leaving Hamada & Shani to double-team Rosemary. Shani takes Rosemary down with a snapmare before kicking her in the back of the head, and Hamada follows up with a kick of her own.  Shani makes the cover, and Hamada makes zero effort to break up the pin for some reason.
Rosemary kicks out, only to get kicked in the face by Hamada right after. Shani puts Rosemary in the Camel Clutch, holding her in place for Hamada to hit a low dropkick. Hamada takes her turn putting Rosemary in the Camel Clutch, only for Shani to boot her in the face instead. Shani follows up with a low dropkick to Hamada before she and Rosemary exchange strikes. The strikes are broken up by Sexy Star, who climbs to the top rope and hits a crossbody on both women.
Hamada grabs Sexy Star and holds her in place for Shani & Rosemary, only for Star to duck, causing Shani & Rosemary to double-club Hamada. Sexy Star chops & punches Shani before ducking a back fist from Hamada. Sexy Star whiffs on a clothesline, however, allowing Hamada to give her a German suplex. Hamada follows up with a DDT before Shani hits another low dropkick. Shani chokes Sexy Star against the ropes as Hamada rolls out of the ring and grabs a chair. Shani continues working over Sexy Star with chops & kicks before Hamada hits a bodyslam on Star, which gets a two-count. Hamada grabs the chair as Shani whips Sexy Star towards her, only for Star to catch her with a dropkick. Sexy Star avoids a clothesline from each woman, only for Rosemary to spit green mist in her face, which you can barely see because they cut to a super wide shot.
This is followed by Shani holding Sexy Star in place while Hamada hits her in the back with a chair. Sexy Star sells this by just kind of walking away & out of the ring, looking slightly annoyed.
The partnership of Shani & Hamada doesn't last, as Shani boots the chair into Hamada's face. Shani follows up by locking Rosemary in a guillotine choke, but Hamada breaks it up by hitting her in the back with the chair. Hamada rolls out of the ring and grabs a trash can. She tosses the lid into the ring and tries to throw the whole can over the top rope, but comes up short.
Rosemary ends up reaching over the top rope so Hamada can hand her the can. Rosemary sets the can in the corner before beating down Shani. Hamada gets back in the ring, and there's a weird 20 seconds or so where everyone stops what they're doing before Rosemary & Hamada double-team Shani. Rosemary sets the chair up and sits Shani down while Hamada places the trash can on her head. Hamada hits the ropes and starts to charge at Shani, only for the chair to crumble and Shani to fall to the mat.
Rosemary ends up holding Shani in place for Hamada to hit a low dropkick. Hamada makes the cover, but Rosemary pulls her off. Rosemary then tries to get the pin, but Hamada kicks her in the face. Hey, remember Sexy Star? She hops back in the ring, only for Hamada to hit her with the trash can lid. Sexy Star completely no sells this and tries to hit Hamada with the lid, but Hamada blocks it and suplexes her. Hamada climbs to the top rope, only for Sexy Star to pop up and powerbomb her down to the mat. Sexy Star makes the cover, but Rosemary rushes over and breaks up the pin.
Rosemary & Shani exchange slaps, and then strikes, before Shani starts laying into Rosemary with kicks. Rosemary catches one, however, and takes Shani down to the mat before locking in a Muta lock (minus the leg-trap.) Sexy Star breaks it up with a stiff-looking double stomp to Rosemary before hitting a low dropkick to Shani. She follows that up with the knee to Rosemary's face, only for Rosemary to catch her with a spear. Rosemary goes to the top rope, only for Sexy Star to yank he down to the mat and lock in an armbar. Rosemary taps out, and this is where Sexy Star decides to end her career in professional wrestling.
Even after Rosemary taps, the referee ends the match, and Sexy Star's music starts playing, Sexy Star  keeps the armbar locked in, and even wrenches back while she has the hold on. The referee manages to get her let go, only for her to immediately reach over and lock it back in. It's very blatant that this is going beyond the match. Eventually, Sexy Star breaks the hold and celebrates. In a moment that is now incredibly awkward, two-time Reina de Reinas champion Martha Villalobos comes down to the ring with the title, and she embraces the woman we just saw injure her opponent.

The Fallout

So...what happened? From what I've read, it seems like Sexy Star and Lady Shani got into it during the match and were trying to shoot on each other. There are a couple of moments where it seems like things get testy between the two, but they never really just start blatantly attacking each other. It also doesn't explain, and definitely doesn't excuse, why Sexy Star decided to do what she did to Rosemary. Rosemary would suffer a strained tricep/bicep, an injury that thankfully only sidelined her for a few weeks. Reportedly, Sexy Star left the arena following the match, only for Vampiro to tell her to return and apologize. Based on Rosemary's initial response outright calling Sexy Star and liar who tried to claim it was a work initially, I don't think she accepted that apology. Sexy Star's own response pretty explicitly said Rosemary was lying about her injury, a sentiment she's maintained as recently as 2019. And as I mentioned, Sexy Star would be stripped of the title, lost everything resembling a major booking, and would never reach the heights she'd reached ever again.

The Verdict

Like I said, the actual match is nowhere near as infamous as Sexy Star injuring Rosemary. Outside of Sexy Star not selling most of the offense and spending the majority of the match outside of the ring, there's really nothing memorable about the match. That being said, the fact that this ended with Sexy Star going out of her way to injure her opponent means you know exactly where this is going.

  11. I got a PPV that only had one amazing opener and a great WWE Title match which sadly ended on a double count out in a No DQ match because WWE didn't like clean finishes at the time, but the rest of the show was riddled with awful performances, Daniel Bryan's return wasted and a main event so bad that audiences were looking to beat the traffic (Backlash 2018)

    Bayley vs Ruby Riott (Kickoff)
    Alexa Bliss vs Nia Jax
    Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton

Madusa vs. Sister Sherri on WCW Monday Nitro, Jan 29 1996

The main reason it's negatively received is Madusa dropping Sherri on her head with a suplex, knocking her out cold, and then still getting her spot in on Sherri's unconscious body

While All Out 2021 was an amazing show that featured the debuts of Bryan Danielson/Adam Cole, CM Punk's return match, an amazing steel cage match between the Young Bucks/Lucha Bros and a very great main event between Kenny Omega/Christian Cage however it did have one bad egg that most people would tend to skip when watching said PPV!

  18. UWF International's show on December 22, 1991 had a "match" between Nobuhiko Takada and former world boxing champion Trevor Berbick that went awry. In this Different Style Fight, Berbick was mad that Takada was doing leg kicks when he'd been told they weren't allowed (hence Different Style... maybe he should have known that). He just stopped working, and then left the ring within three minutes.

This is a bizarre display that I think you should see.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
