Worst in the World: Kevin Nash vs Sid Vicious-Starrcade 1999

One of the most common storytelling devices in wrestling is the classic ref bump-pinfall combo. It's pretty simple; the referee gets knocked out by one of the wrestlers (either intentionally or unintentionally), the babyface hits a finisher and makes the cover, he gets the visual three count, but not the victory because the referee is still down and can't see the pin. It's an easy way to extend the match while giving the match some more heat, and plenty of great matches have done this to great effect. WCW and Vince Russo, however, decided to put their own spin on that trope, leading to one of the absolute dumbest endings to a match you'll ever see. That ending came at Starrcade 1999 in the "Powerbomb match" between Kevin Nash and Sid Vicious.

The match is simple, the first man to hit the Powerbomb wins and is the true "Master of the Powerbomb." Is it Nash with the Jackknife? Or is it Sid with the...Powerbomb...Either way, the match was a bust, earning a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently holds a show-low 1.14/10 average on Cagematch.net. Like the Sting-Rick Steiner match I covered two weeks ago, this match is far less infamous for the actual match, and more for the incredibly dumb way it ends. Let's take a look.

The two lock up to start, with neither man gaining the upper hand before Nash knees Sid in the gut. Nash punches Sid into the corner, where he knees him in the gut three times. Nash then elbows Sid three times before going back to the punches. Nash whips Sid into the ropes, knocking him down with a clothesline when he bounces back. Nash makes the cover, and even though this a match where the only way to win is to hit a Powerbomb, referee Slick Johnson counts it. Sid kicks out at two. What are we doing?

Nash whips Sid back to the ropes and goes for the clothesline again, but Sid ducks it and kicks him in the gut. Sid goes for the Powerbomb, but Nash quickly low blows him to avoid it. Sid rolls out of the ring, with Nash following him out. Nash goes for the Jackknife on the outside, but Sid pushes him away before kicking him. Sid rams Nash into the ring apron before throwing him into the guard rail. Sid punches & kicks Nash before throwing him into the guard rail. Sid then grabs a chair and delivers a soft chair shot to the back.

Sid throws Nash back in the ring and whips him to the ropes, catching him with a clothesline when he bounces back. Sid follows up with a leg drop before punching away at Nash. Sid calls for the Powerbomb...and then picks him up for a bodyslam. What? Sid then tries to start a "Powerbomb" chant, but no one chants it. Nash plays dirty, poking Sid in the eye before attempting to whip him into the corner. Sid reverses it, sending Nash into the corner and inadvertently squashing the referee. Get ready for some dumb shit that's about to happen.

Sid quickly follows up with the Powerbomb, but the referee doesn't see it. Sid tries to revive the ref, only for Jeff Jarrett to run down, guitar in hand. Jarrett smashes the guitar over Sid's head, clearing it out of the ring before waking Nash up. Nash goes to pick Sid up for the Jackknife, but his back gives out and he can't get Sid up. He tries again, but still can't. Instead, Nash picks the referee up and tells him he hit the Jackknife. Now, if pro wrestling has taught you anything, it would be that the referee has to actually see the person score the pinfall, get the tap out, or do whatever is needed to actually win the match. Obviously, the referee would not just end the match because Nash said he Powerbombed Sid...

The Verdict

I'm dead serious, that's how the match ends. Kevin Nash tells the referee he hit a Powerbomb, and the referee just goes with it. Unbelievably stupid. This is a slow, boring brawl with two moves, one even remotely entertaining spot, and one of the stupidest finishes you'll ever see. Not even funny stupid, just obscenely stupid. Avoid this match, there is no enjoyment whatsoever from this match.
