Worst in the World: Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar-WrestleMania 38 (Night 2)

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
Over the last few years, WWE has developed a bad habit of trying to make already big matches even grander. Take, for example, the main event of WrestleMania 35. After Becky Lynch won the Royal Rumble that same year, the stage was set; Becky Lynch, a breakout star of the women's division, and one of the most prominent women the company has ever had, challenging Ronda Rousey, a trailblazer in women's MMA that reached mainstream recognition before transitioning to pro-wrestling, for the Raw Women's Championship. It was a match-up that we were supposed to get at the previous year's Survivor Series, only for that match to get changed due to Lynch suffering a concussion. That's already a huge match, and almost certainly the biggest women's match WWE would have ever had at that point. However, that apparently wasn't enough for WWE. In the aftermath of the Royal Rumble, WWE would over-do things by kayfabe suspending Lynch, giving Charlotte Flair her spot in the WrestleMania match, having Lynch get unsuspended at the request of Rousey, having Rousey cause Lynch to win by DQ in a match against Charlotte to earn her way back into the WrestleMania match, and (since the topic of Asuka being misused is fresh on this site) having Charlotte beat Asuka to win the SmackDown Women's Championship on a random SmackDown to make the match a double-title match. It was such a simple feud that WWE overcomplicated for no reason, added on other things that didn't really elevate the match at all, and even took down another wrestler's (Asuka) stock for no real reason, other than to inflate the hype of an already hyped-up match. And three years later, they'd do the same thing with that year's main event.
Roman Reigns won the Universal Championship all the way back at Payback 2020, a reign that would establish the former golden boy of the company into its new unstoppable top heel, with Paul Heyman by his side. Fast forward almost a year later to SummerSlam 2021, and Roman Reigns has just beaten John Cena to retain his title. Enter Brock Lesnar, making his first appearance in over a year since Night 2 of WrestleMania 36. Reigns & Lesnar would face for the title at Crown Jewel that year, which Reigns would win thanks to interference from the Usos. It seemed certain this story would conclude at WrestleMania that year, and even though Reigns & Lesnar have faced off plenty of times, this was still a pretty big match-up with the usual face-heel roles reversed...here's where things get complicated.
Reigns & Lesnar were supposed to face off again at Day 1 in 2022, but Reigns contracted COVID-19, forcing a change and inserting Lesnar into a makeshift Fatal 5-Way for the WWE Championship, which he'd win. Big E, who lost the title in the match, would never get a rematch...just saying. Lesnar then seemingly reunited with Paul Heyman before he was set to face off with Bobby Lashley for the title at the Royal Rumble, only for Heyman to turn on Lesnar, helping Reigns cost him the match and the title. Lesnar would then win the Royal Rumble match pretty easily, setting up the expected Reigns-Lesnar conclusion at WrestleMania. But apparently, that wasn't enough, as Lesnar would win the WWE Championship again, this time in an Elimination Chamber, by eliminating every single participant (aside from Lashley, who was written out during the match due to a legit injury.) Now it was a double-title main event for a feud that's build should have been simple, but the build ends up adding on more stuff that doesn't elevate the match and deals a blow to other wrestler's stocks (in this case, Big E and Bobby Lashley), all to inflate the hype for this match so they could call it "The Biggest WrestleMania Match of All-Time".
But all that aside, how was the match. After all, Reigns and Lesnar are able to have good, or at least fun, matches. However, "The Biggest WrestleMania Match of All-Time" proved to be more divisive than anything. Dave Meltzer would give it three and a quarter stars, while the Pro Wrestling Torch was even kinder, giving it 4 stars. Cagematch.net, on the other hand, has the match sitting at a 4.60 out of 10, which is the third lowest-rated match from both nights among eligible (over five minutes) matches. The ratings suggest that it's not quite as bad as Reigns & Lesnar's WrestleMania 34 match, but still falls well into the bottom half of their seven matches in terms of ratings, and was vastly overshadowed by their very fun match at the SummerSlam after this show. Let's get into it.
Reigns comes down to the ring first, with Paul Heyman and The Usos by his side, but the Usos don't stick around for long. Reigns takes the mic to simply tell WrestleMania to acknowledge him. Heyman steals the mic from ring announcer Mike Rome to introduce Reigns himself. When Rome tries to introduce Lesnar, Lesnar takes the mic himself so he can do his own introduction. The match starts with Lesnar immediately removing his MMA gloves. Lesnar mounts the first offense, clubbing & kneeing Reigns into the corner, where he hits a shoulder block. Reigns tries to fight back, but Lesnar keeps control, forcing him back into the corner for three more shoulder blocks. Lesnar lifts Reigns up and carries him across the ring, slamming him into the opposite corner. Lesnar goes for his first German suplex, but Reigns blocks it with two elbows. Lesnar, however, ducks a third elbow and hits a belly-to-belly suplex. Lesnar follows up with two more belly-to-belly suplexes before clotheslining Reigns out of the ring.
Heyman checks on Reigns, prompting Lesnar to go out after him. Heyman pleads for mercy, only for Reigns to surprise Lesnar with a Spear through the timekeeper's area. Reigns runs back into the ring as the referee counts Lesnar out. Lesnar stumbles, but just beats the count. Reigns quickly hits another Spear and makes the cover, but Lesnar kicks out at two. Reigns follows up with a Superman Punch, trash-talking the crowd before hitting a second Superman Punch. More trash talk as Lesnar gets to his feet, laughing. Reigns goes for a third Superman Punch, but Lesnar ducks it and hits his first German Suplex. Lesnar follows up with a second, then a third, then a fourth, and then a fifth German suplex. Lesnar goes for the F-5, but Reigns slips out and shoves Lesnar into the corner. Reigns catches Lesnar with another Superman Punch and soaks in the boos before going for the Spear. Lesnar catches him, however, and hits the F-5, but Reigns kicks out. Lesnar goes for a second F-5, but Reigns rakes the eyes to escape. Reigns shoves Lesnar into referee Chad Patton in the corner, and follows up by Spearing Lesnar into Patton.
With the referee down, Reigns low blows Lesnar before grabbing the Universal Championship from Heyman. Reigns smashes Lesnar in the head with the belt as the referee recovers to make the count, but Lesnar kicks out again. More jaw-jacking from Reigns before he starts running the ropes for a super-charged Spear. Reigns connects, hitting Lesnar in the back, which just kind of looks weird. Reigns makes the cover, but Lesnar grabs the ropes to break the pin. Reigns goes for another Spear, but Lesnar catches him and locks in the Kimura Lock. Lesnar wrenches on the arm, but Reigns survives the hold for 40 seconds. Reigns reaches for the bottom rope, with Heyman pushing it closer to him so he can grab it and break the hold. Heyman tries to talk up Reigns while Reigns says his shoulder has popped out. Both men get back to their feet as Lesnar goes for another F-5, but Reigns slips out and hits another Spear for the three, the win, and both titles...yeah...that was it.

The Verdict

It's just big move spam, that's it. There's not really anything of substance, just signatures and finishers over and over again. And it's not like this is a big car crash spot fest or fast-paced the entire time like Lesnar vs Goldberg at WrestleMania 33 was. They'd do a big move, pause for a while, and then do another big move. This was 12 minutes of that. The finish is also very sudden, and really didn't work with this match. All in all, I'm gonna have to agree with the Cagematch community on this one. It's far from the worst match I've ever seen, and it's certainly not the worst WrestleMania main event ever, but it definitely doesn't live up to the hype of the "The Biggest WrestleMania Match of All-Time."

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. Next week, I'll be going back to WrestleMania VII and (fittingly) looking at seven of the worst matches on the card. Stay tuned.

Comments

  1. With all due respect to the Ultimate Warrior, who wrestled his final match in 2008 for his children to watch him live in person, he should have just gave them old DVDs instead. Interesting choice for Orlando Jordan to be his opponent as OJ is a gay man and Warrior was openly homophobic.

One more suggestion is the Arkansas Hog Pen match between Henry Godwinn and Hunter Hearst Helmsley at the December 1995 PPV. I hated the pig farmer gimmick so much dating back to my pre-internet days and I once heard a rumour that RAW’s TV ratings dropped whenever they appeared on screen.

    1. It does make Warrior's final match very jarring since it's a gay man vs a homophobic man

    2. The Warrior-Jordan match is definitely awkward given Warrior's blatant homophobia. I don't know for sure, but it's possible Jordan wasn't out yet in 2008. That match has been on my radar for a while and now that's been I requested, I'll definetley add it to the list.
I'll also add the Hog Pen match. Thanks for the suggestions!

    1. I've thought about it in the past. Over the last year or so, I've been trying to think of a more positive series (not that I don't like doing the Worst in the World anymore, I just wanted something that's more appreciative of wrestling instead of just writing about the bad stuff.) Ever since I saw this comment, I've actually been trying to compile a good list of matches (ones with average ratings on Cagematch higher than 9.00, matches Meltzer gave 5-stars, etc,) so maybe some time in the near future I'll start doing it.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
