Worst in the World: WrestleMania XV: The Ragin' Anticlimax

1999 was one of the most important years in the history of the then-World Wrestling Federation. After being thoroughly beaten in the ratings battle by WCW for nearly two years, the WWF had regained its footing mid-1998, and would head into '99 on a winning streak in the Monday Night Wars that would never end. At the same time, WCW had begun to fall apart, with the now infamous Fingerpoke of Doom being the first of many nails in the coffin of the company. With their main competitor going from a genuine threat to a distant second, the WWF was absolutely on fire. With that said, it's kind of surprising that, in one of the best years the company ever had, the WWF put on one of the worst WrestleManias of all time in WrestleMania XV.
It feels weird to say that. After all, this is the show that featured the first WrestleMania match-up between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, probably the most legendary rivalry in WWF history. But aside from that, what is there? Sure, the European Championship match between Shane McMahon and X-Pac is fairly fun. But that's it. This is a 10-match card, and less than a quarter of it is even considered average. Outside of Austin/Rock and McMahon/X-Pac, none of the matches have a rating higher than a star and a half, with two of them earning a DUD (zero stars) or worse from Dave Meltzer. So, to kick off a big WrestleMania-themed April, I'm going to be taking a look at the remainder of the WrestleMania XV card. I've already covered Sable vs Tori so I'll be skipping over that one, but that's still seven matches to look at. Let's get into this.

Match #1: The Hardcore Championship Triple Threat

The opening match of WrestleMania XV was a triple threat for the Hardcore Championship, with Billy Gunn defending the title against Al Snow and Hardcore Holly. This was weird, as Gunn had originally been pursuing the Intercontinental Championship while his tag partner Road Dogg went after (and won) the Hardcore Championship. However, after Road Dogg won the Intercontinental Championship himself, Gunn instead won the Hardcore Championship from Holly two weeks before WrestleMania. Meanwhile, Holly and Snow had been feuding for the belt, with the former Job Squad members having faced off for the vacant title at St. Valentine's Day Massacre a month prior. This match earned a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently holds a 3.61 rating on Cagematch.net. Let's get into this.
Before the match, Billy Gunn tries to cut a promo, but is attacked from behind by Snow. Holly then hits Snow from behind before he & Gunn hit a double back elbow on Snow. Holly then takes control, beating down Gunn in the corner before laying him out with a clothesline, which Gunn takes a huge twisting bump for. Snow then takes control, hitting Holly with a forearm before stomping away at both of his opponents. Snow drags Holly to the outside, throwing him into the Spanish announce table before whipping him with a cameraman's cable. Snow then shuts down Gunn's offense when he follows them out and whips him into the ring steps. Holly takes control, dragging Snow over to the entrance ramp and throwing him into the barricade. Holly then follows up with a suplex on the outside, only for Gunn to run over and stomp away at both of them. Gunn follows up by tossing Snow into the ring steps and goes to powerbomb Holly on the outside, but Snow breaks it up with a forearm to the back. Holly thanks Snow for saving him by kicking him in the face.
Holly is the first man to go under the ring, only for Snow to kick him in the back before he can grab anything. Snow then grabs a hockey stick from under the ring, hitting both of his opponents with the stick as a "LET'S GO FLYERS" chant breaks out (the show was held in the then-First Union Center where the Philadelphia Flyers play.) Snow then grabs an entire tray of drinks & ice and throws it down on Holly. Gunn takes control, however, by grabbing the now empty tray and hitting Snow with it. Gunn then grabs the hockey stick and breaks it over Holly's back. Holly & Gunn roll back into the ring, where Gunn continues hitting him with the broken stick. Snow follows them in, having grabbed a broomstick from under the ring. Gunn begins to fend him off with the stick, but Snow takes control with a low blow before breaking the broomstick over Gunn's back. Snow beats both his opponents with the broken broomstick, with Gunn rolling out of the ring and grabbing a chair.
Snow fends off Gunn with the broomstick before grabbing the chair for himself, now hitting both men with it instead. Snow sets up the chair and hits a one-man Poetry in Motion on Gunn in the corner. Snow then jabs Gunn with the broomstick directly in the penis before the camera misses Snow whiffing on another Poetry in Motion attempt on Holly, who ducks out of the way and sends Snow crashing into the corner. Gunn tosses Holly out of the ring, following him out to pick him up in a gorilla press and drop him across the barricade. Gunn tosses Holly back in the ring, only for Snow to hit both men with Head (who he had left in a corner after making his entrance.) Snow converses with Head before going under the ring and grabbing a table. Snow brings the table into the ring before setting it up in the corner. Snow tries to whip Holly into the table, but Holly reverses it and hits a clothesline. Gunn then quickly levels him with a chair shot to the head before tossing Snow into the table. Gunn follows up with a Famouser to Snow onto the chair and makes the cover, only for Holly to grab the chair and hit him across the back to break up the pin. Holly steals the pin on Snow and gets the three, the win, and the title.

The Verdict

It's nothing special, but it's a decent little plunder match. Not much more to say.

Match #2: Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart vs D'Lo Brown & Test

The next match on the card saw Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett defending the World Tag Team Championships against D'Lo Brown & Test. "Since when are D'Lo Brown & Test a tag team?" you might be asking? Quite literally, about an hour ago. The two were the co-winners of a 20-man battle royal on the Heat before this show, where the final two men in the match would become the #1 contenders for the titles. This match would also earn a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, but falls under the five-minute requirement to be eligible for a rating on Cagematch.
D'Lo is out first, with Ivory by his side, while Test comes out wearing...quite the T-shirt...
The two are already at odds, arguing and getting in each other's faces. Jarrett & Hart are out with Debra by their side. D'Lo & Test attack the champs from behind after the bell rings. Test quickly hits a big boot on Hart before hitting a clothesline, with Hart rolling out of the ring right after. Meanwhile, D'Lo beats down Jarrett in the corner, but Jarrett turns the tables when he ducks a clothesline and hit a shoulder block. D'Lo responds with a hip toss, a clothesline, and a flying forearm. Jarrett tries to regain the momentum, reversing an Irish whip and sending D'Lo into the corner, but D'Lo catches him with a back elbow. Both men tag out, bringing in Test & Hart.
Hart quickly chops Test, but Test takes control with a kick to the gut followed by a beautiful falling powerbomb. Test makes the cover, but Hart kicks out at two. Test goes for the pumphandle slam, but Hrt slips out and hits an enziguri. Hart locks in the Sharpshooter, but D'Lo runs in to break it up with a running forearm. Test tags D'Lo back, loudly telling him to "GET YOUR ASS IN THERE AND DO SOMETHING." D'Lo does something, flooring Hart with a forearm shot before hitting a body slam and a leg drop. He then just yells "YOU SUCK" at Hart. I thought it was funny. A distraction from Jarrett allows Hart to regain control with a spinning heel kick. Hart follows up with a gutwrench suplex before tagging in Jarrett for a double-team clothesline. Jarrett follows up with a leg drop into the ropes before tagging Hart back in. Another double-team clothesline is dodged by D'Lo, however, who lays out both men with a double clothesline of his own.
D'Lo fires up, bodyslamming both men before hitting a heel kick on Hart. Jarrett whips D'Lo into the ropes and tries to leapfrog him, but D'Lo catches him with the Sky High spinebuster. D'Lo makes the cover, but Hart breaks up the pin. Debra hops up on the apron to distract D'Lo, only to get yanked down by Ivory. The two argue as D'Lo sets up for the running sitout powerbomb. In the chaos, however, both Test and the referee are distracted, allowing Hart to climb to the top rope and hit D'Lo with a missile dropkick. Terri Runnels and Jacqueline (the Pretty Mean Sisters or "P.M.S.") run down to argue with Ivory...for some reason...as Jarrett covers D'Lo for the three and the win. Ivory and Test argue before Test starts arguing with D'Lo. The two begin brawling at ringside.

The Verdict

This is another match that I don't think is necessarily as bad as its rating suggests. It's not great, or good even, but it's a decent little match with a couple of nice spots. This is another one that's going toward the top of the list.

Match #3: The Assassination of Bart Gunn by the Coward Vince McMahon

I mean...is there really anything else you can call this match? Yes, it's time to talk about the Brawl for All, the now infamous tournament the WWF held in the summer of 1998. Born out of spite thanks to Vince Russo wanting to see Bradshaw get his ass kicked after he bragged about being able to beat anyone in the WWF in a bar fight, the Brawl for All featured 16 mid-to-lower card wrestlers (cause there's no way in hell someone like Steve Austin is risking his status in this tournament) in a shootfighting tournament, with the winner receiving $100,000. It was an absolute disaster, with multiple wrestlers suffering legit injuries, all while the viewing audience voiced their disdain for it. Unsurprisingly, the inaugural Brawl for All was the very last one. And yes, I'll cover the entire tournament one day, but for now, we're focusing on the horrible conclusion to the Brawl for All experiment.
Along with Russo seeing Bradshaw get beat up for real, another purpose of the Brawl for All was to establish the newly signed Dr. Death Steve Williams as a big deal, with the plan being for him to feud with Steve Austin after winning the tournament. Hardcore Holly has even alleged that the WWF had already paid Williams the prize money before his fight with Bart Gunn. Gunn would promptly say "FUCK DR. DEATH!" and, after injuring Williams' hamstring on a takedown, knocked him out. Gunn would go on to win the tournament, but what did this mean? With their plan up in smoke due to Williams' loss and injury, would Bart Gunn be getting a main event push? Not a chance. In fact, Gunn has gone on record saying he knew he was screwed after the fight. And screwed he was.
That brings us to WrestleMania XV, where Gunn was set to have one final Brawl for All match-up. Who would his opponent be? Eric "Butterbean" Esch, the then-International Boxing Association World Super Heavyweight Champion with a 41-1-1 record, and 34 knockouts to his name. To call this a mismatch is a giant understatement. The WWF did send Gunn to train with boxing trainer Ray Rinaldi (who had also trained Marc Mero), but even then, it can't compare to someone with four and a half years of professional boxing experience like Butterbean. This sounds like as bad of a decision as Antonio Inoki putting Yuji Nagata in MMA fights with two of the best heavyweights of all time in Mirko Cro Cop and Fedor Emelianenko. But unlike Inoki, who wanted to blend mixed-martial arts and professional wrestling, Vince McMahon booking this match comes off less as negligence and more as malice towards Gunn for knocking out Williams. Butterbean himself has said that Vince seemed pretty eager for this fight (and more than likely knockout) to happen. And it did, and it was ugly.
Before the match starts, Howard Finkel has some introductions to make. Refereeing the match will be boxer Vinny Pazienza (non-boxing fans might know him as the subject of the 2016 biopic Bleed for This. Judging the match is boxing trainer Kevin Rooney, former boxer Chuck Wepner, whose underdog story of his fight with Muhammad Ali served as Sylvester Stallone's inspiration for writing Rocky, and had wrestled Andre the Giant in 1976, and WWF Hall of Famer Gorilla Monsoon. Both men make their entrances with their cornermen by their sides. There's a scoring system for takedowns and knockdowns, but trust me, it's not gonna matter. The two go face-to-face before the bell rings. Gunn might land two punches the entire fight, Butterbean just cooks him the entire time and knocks him down in about 17 seconds. Gunn, however, beats the count...just to get knocked out almost immediately after the fight starts again. It's particularly gnarly watching how quickly Gunn's head whips back and forth, even in the slow-mo replay.
After Gunn is helped out of the ring, the referee Pazienza is hassled by the San Diego Chicken, the unofficial mascot of the San Diego Padres baseball team credited with popularizing mascots in professional sports. Pazienze punches him for bothering him.

The Verdict

It's brutal to watch. It might have only 35 seconds, but it's still 35 seconds too long. This was horribly negligent. I get not being happy that Gunn ruined your plans for Dr. Death, but there has to be a better course of action than doing this. If you ask me, putting a wrestler in a shoot fight where he is heavily outmatched and could get seriously injured as a punishment sounds like a perfect fit for the red tier.

Match #4: Mankind vs Paul Wight

Following the destruction of Bart Gunn's WWF career, we moved on to the fourth match on the card, as Mankind takes on Paul Wight...or, is he the Big Show...or is he "The Big Show" Paul Wight. Everything I've read as research just kind of uses those names interchangeably. Paul Wight has had a complicated start to his WWF career. Fresh off a three-and-a-half-year stint in WCW, Wight debuted at St. Valentine's Day Massacre the previous month, rising up from under the ring to attack Steve Austin during his Steel Cage match with Mr. McMahon. He would then immediately be booked to look like a dunce when he threw Austin into the cage wall, causing it to fling open and allow him to escape, win the match, and earn a WWF Championship match at WrestleMania. In fact, in the month after the pay-per-view, Wight didn't win a single match, with two matches ending in no contests, and then losing to Austin. This is someone they described as "the most coveted signing in the history of sports entertainment" and this is what they were doing with him? Honestly, they might've been lucky WCW was starting to sink at this point, because I can't imagine booking Wight like this would inspire much confidence for anyone wanting to jump ship.
But back to this match. Siding with the Corporation, Wight would set his sights on Mankind, costing him the WWF Championship in a ladder match against The Rock. Deprived of a WrestleMania main event, Mankind and Wight would be set to face off at the event themselves, with the winner of the match going on to referee the main event. Even if Wight's booking hasn't been great to start, his matches have at least been good for the most part. Would that streak continue at WrestleMania? Surprisingly, no. This match earned just three-quarters of a star from Dave Meltzer, and currently sits at just a 2.27 on Cagematch, the third worst of the show. I get that Wight might need the right opponent to have a good match...but Mick Foley is absolutely someone you could consider "the right opponent." What caused a match between two people capable of putting on good matches to get a rating that bad? Let's take a look.
The match starts with an immediate brawl, with Mankind punching away at Wight. Mankind hits a forearm, but Wight barely budges. Mankind follows up with a clothesline and Wight stumbles, but stays on his feet. Mankind goes for another strike, but Wight catches him with a big boot to knock him down. Wight headbutts Mankind, sending him out of the ring. Wight follows him out, where the two trade blows. Mankind gets the upper hand, throwing Wight's head into the ring steps twice before going for the double-arm DDT. Wight blocks it, however, and shoves Mankind back and over the steps. Wight follows up with a headbutt before tossing Mankind back in the ring. Wight drags Mankind to the corner, punching & chopping him before elbowing him in the back of the head. Wight follows up with a knee to the head before hitting a side Russian leg sweep. He then pretty blatantly just overshoots a clothesline by a mile and flies over the top rope to the outside.
Time for the sock. Mankind pulls Mr. Socko out of his pants and applies the Mandible Claw on Wight. Wight quickly fights out of the hold with a headbutt, but Mankind reapplies the hold just as quick. Wight is able to fight out again with a punch, but Mankind puts the hold on for a third time. Mankind then kicks him in the dick...just cause, I guess. Right in front of referee Earl Hebner, too. Wight goes down to one knee, while Mankind restrains his arms to prevent a rope break. Wight begins to fade, and Hebner begins to raise & drop his arm. Wight keeps his arm up on the second drop, fights to his feet, and falls backwards, slamming Mankind down and crushing him, breaking the hold in the process. Wight boots Mankind out of the ring, quickly following him out and grabbing a chair. Wight hits Mankind with the chair multiple times, all in front of Hebner. Wight throws Mankind back into the ring, along with two chairs. Wight sets up the chairs across from each other and chokeslams Mankind through them. And only now is it a DQ, apparently, as Hebner calls for the bell and gives the win to Foley. What? It makes zero sense that the match would end in a disqualification after Wight had already used a chair, and after Mankind had blatantly low-blowed Wight. Not to mention that intentionally getting DQ'd, as a Corporation member, in a match where winning would make you the referee in a match the Corporation wants Steve Austin to lose, is just another example of the WWF booking Wight to look like a dunce right out the gate.
Wight continues beating Mankind with the chair as Hebner flees from the ring. Vince McMahon comes down to the ring, admonishing Wight for doing the dumbest thing possible. Wight tries to walk away, but Vince grabs him and turns him around. More admonishment leads to Wight grabbing Vince by the throat and lifting him up for the chokeslam. Wight, however, puts him down, only for Vince to continue admonishing him. Vince then slaps Wight, which prompts him to punch Vince. For those keeping track, that is Big Show Face/Heel Turn #8 of what would become 36 over his career. Wight walks up the ramp, yelling at Pat Patterson & Gerald Briscoe on his way to the back.

The Verdict

Yeah, this is not good. For starters, the nonsensical & random enforcement of disqualifications just makes the match confusing, and the bad booking makes Wight look dumb as shit does the match no favors either. But even if you take those parts out, the match is a slow, unexciting brawl, with one actual move and a really clunky spot. It's far from the worst match I've ever seen, but it's not going near the top of the list either.

Match #5: The Intercontinental Championship Fatal 4-Way

Match #5 is the fifth match on the card, as Road Dogg defends the Intercontinental Championship against Goldust, Ken Shamrock, and Val Venis in a Fatal-4-Way elimination match. As I mentioned earlier, Road Dogg and Billy Gunn just kind of switched which titles they were going for when Road Dogg won the IC title. That essentially slotted him right into Gunn's place in a four-way feud between the four participants. Back in January, the WWF was introduced to Ken Shamrock's kayfabe sister Ryan, who quickly caught the attention of both Val Venis and Billy Gunn. Shamrock would defend the IC title successfully against Gunn at the Royal Rumble, but lost the title Venis when Ryan interfered on his behalf. Venis & Ryan would quickly split up, leading to Ryan joining up with Goldust. And then Road Dogg just randomly won the title, and that's how we got here. Also, side note, the woman who worked as Ryan Shamrock, Alicia Webb, was the real-life girlfriend of Ken Shamrock at the time. They booked a man's girlfriend to be his kayfabe sister. That's just a really weird thing the WWF did. This match earned a one-and-a-half-star rating from Dave Meltzer, and holds a 3.89 rating on Cagematch.net.
Venis cuts a pre-match promo, telling the ladies not to worry, because even the IC belt can't keep his pants up. Goldust comes out with Ryan and The Blue Meanie, who is having a run in the WWF that I constantly forget happened. Shamrock is the last man out, rushing the ring. The four men partner off as the bell rings, with Road Dogg & Venis trading blows while Goldust pounces on Shamrock. Shamrock quickly turns the tables, flooring Goldust with a back elbow before hitting a hurricanrana, sending Goldust rolling out of the ring. Meanwhile, Venis is beating down Road Dogg in the corner until Shamrock hits him from behind. Shamrock & Road Dogg double team Venis, hitting a double back elbow, only for Shamrock to clothesline Road Dogg to the mat. Shamrock tosses Road Dogg into the corner, where he kicks him a bunch before whipping him across the ring. Venis & Goldust then wait on the apron, so they're using the tag rules for this match.
Shamrock follows up with another Irish whip, sending Road Dogg into the corner again. Road Dogg turns the tables with a kick, followed by a punch and a dropkick to knock Shamrock down. Road Dogg tags in Goldust, who quickly ducks a clothesline from Shamrock and hits a nice spinebuster. Goldust follows up with some punches before hitting a jumping clothesline, sending Shamrock scrambling into Venis' corner. Venis tags in, only to stomp away at Shamrock. Goldust takes the opportunity to hit him with a belly-to-back suplex, which gets a two-count. Venis tries to respond with a slam, but Goldust slips out and goes for the Curtain Call (a lifting reverse DDT.) Venis also slips out and hits a spinebuster for a two-count. Goldust responds with the weird no arms Pedigree he used to do in TNA, followed by a clothesline for a two-count. Goldust sets Venis on the top rope and goes for a superplex, but Venis blocks it, hits a diving bulldog, and makes the cover, but Goldust kicks out. Venis follows up with a fisherman suplex and holds the pin, but Goldust kicks out again. Venis tries to whip Goldust across the ring, but Goldust reverses it, sending Venis into the corner. A collision knocks Goldust to the ground, while Venis falls right after and headbutts him in the penis.
Road Dogg distracts the referee (a new member of the Hall of Fame, I might add) Tim White, allowing Shamrock to get in the ring and DDT Goldust. When White turns his attention to Shamrock, Road Dogg takes the opportunity to DDT Venis. White begins to countout Goldust & Venis, but Goldust recovers and crawls to pin Venis, who kicks out. Shamrock screams at White, distracting him as Road Dogg clocks Goldust with a forearm. Without a tag, Road Dogg starts chopping Venis in the corner. Road Dogg tries to whip Venis across the ring, but Venis reverses it, whipping Road Dogg into the corner before clotheslining him. Venis repeats the process before locking in a bear hug. Road Dogg quickly fights out and, after ducking a clothesline, does the Shake, Rattle, and Roll jabbing away at Venis. He then tells Goldust to suck it, goading him into the ring so he can do the Shake, Rattle, and Roll to him. Road Dogg barely has time to Shake, Rattle, or Roll (not sure which one the dancing is) before Shamrock runs in. Road Dogg quickly clocks Goldust before ducking a clothesline from Shamrock. Road Dogg kicks Shamrock before flooring him with a clothesline and dropping the knee. Road Dogg celebrates on the second rope, only for Venis to run in and back-suplex him and cover him, but only gets a two count.
Road Dogg hits the Pumphandle Slam (complete with dry-humping Venis' ass), but Shamrock tags himself in before he can cover Venis. Shamrock charges Venis in the corner, but Venis gets a boot-up. Venis charges Shamrock, but Shamrock ducks and picks his ankle, locking in the ankle lock. Venis struggles, but gets to the bottom rope to break the hold. Shamrock tries to clothesline Venis out of the ring, only for Venis to backdrop him out. Venis follows up with a baseball slide on Shamrock, leading to the two brawling in the entranceway. As this happens, Tim White counts both men out for a double elimination. Shamrock tries to plead his case as Road Dogg & Goldust trade blows in the ring. Goldust knocks Road Dogg down with a punch, only for Shamrock to hit him with a belly-to-belly suplex. Shamrock gives Road Dogg a belly-to-belly of his own, leaving both legal men down as Shamrock leaves the ring. Goldust crawls to make the cover, but Road Dogg kicks out. Goldust whips Road Dogg towards Ryan Shamrock so she can trip him, but Road Dogg reverses it. Ryan, who stops looking at the match, accidentally trips Goldust. Goldust tries to hit Road Dogg with a powerslam, but Road Dogg cradles & pins him for the three to retain the title. Ryan, the Blue Meanie, and Goldust argue at ringside before Goldust sends Ryan to the back.

The Verdict

For the most part, the match is fine, there are a couple of nice spots. It does go on a bit too long before there are any eliminations, and once the eliminations start, the match pretty much ends. Also, the ending is pretty dumb. I don't know how prevalent the spot is in wrestling, but having a heel manager or valet cost their wrestler the match because they tripped them without looking makes no sense. But overall, the match is OK and goes toward the top.

Match #6: Kane vs Triple H

Match #6 sees Kane taking on Triple H. Chyna had turned on Triple H earlier this year, costing him the WWF Championship and siding with the Corporation. The feud would escalate quickly, with Kane accidentally hitting Chyna in the face with a fireball, while Triple H surprised Kane by dressing up as Goldust and shooting him with a flamethrower.
It escalated very quickly. Once you've started violating the Geneva Conventions, the only logical conclusion is to have a singles match at WrestleMania. This is another match that earned just a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently sits at a 3.03 rating on Cagematch.
As Kane makes his entrance, the San Diego Chicken runs back and attacks Kane from behind. Kane easily fends him off and rips his head off, revealing him to be Pete Rose, who had been attacked by Kane at last year's WrestleMania and would attack him again the following year, with the same results. Kane tosses Rose in the ring and quickly hits a Tombstone Piledriver. Triple H decides to follow in Rose's footsteps, entering from the crowd and attacking Kane from behind with a low blow. The match quickly starts with Triple H punching Kane in the corner. Kane shoves Triple H away, but Triple H pounces on him and goes back to punching him in the corner. Kane shoves him away again, and catches him with a big boot when he charges back at him. Triple H, however, regains control by backdropping Kane out of the ring to the outside, where Kane lands on his feet.
Kane drags Triple H out with him and beats him around ringside, only for Triple H to duck a clothesline, causing Kane to hit the ring post. Triple H throws Kane into the ring post again before tossing him into the ring steps. Triple H reenters the ring and when Kane tries to get back in, Triple H knocks him back down with a high knee, sending Kane into the barricade. Triple H follows up with a baseball slide before tossing him into the announce table. Triple H throws Kane back into the ring, but Kane takes control after reversing an Irish whip and hitting a big boot. Kane tosses Triple H back out of the ring, and boots him into the barricade when he tries to drag him out with him. Kane follows him out on his own, only for Triple H to toss him into the barricade. Triple H goes up on the ring steps, but Kane grabs him and drops him crotch-first onto the barricade before punching him into the front row, right in the laps of the Mean Street Posse. That includes the often-forgotten members of the group Billy P and Willie Greene, and does not include Joey Abs who, unlike the other members who were real-life friends of Shane McMahon, Abs was actually a trained wrestler added to the group to be the worker. The Posse shoves Triple H back over the barricade, where Kane scoops him up and rams him into the ring post three times before throwing him into the ring.
Kane hits an uppercut before whipping Triple H into the corner. Kane beats down Triple H in the corner before choking him. Kane continues beating down Triple H in the corner before uppercutting him and hitting a leg drop. Kane makes the first cover of the match, but Triple H kicks out. Triple H tries to fire back with a kick, but Kane shuts him down with a clothesline. Kane throwsTriple around the ring until Triple H catches him with a knee in the corner. Triple H punches away at Kane, but Kane again keeps control with a knee before tossing him out of the ring. Kane then hits a plancha to the outside, which I was not expecting at all. Kane tosses Triple H back into the ring and goes to the top rope, but Triple H pops up and tosses him down to the mat. Kane sits up and goes for a corner splash, but Triple H dodges and punches away at Kane. Triple H dodges a clothesline and a back elbow before kneeing Kane in the face. Triple H follows up with a knee, only for Chyna to come down to the ring.
The distraction allows Kane to pop up and go for the Tombstone, but Triple H slips out and goes for the Pedigree. Kane blocks it, takes him down, and hits an elbow drop. Chyna slides the top half of the steel steps into the ring and Kane goes to hit Triple H with them, but Triple H kicks them into his face. Kane drops the steps, and Triple H ducks a clothesline before sending Kane into the steps with a drop-toe hold. Triple H clotheslines Kane out of the ring, quickly following him out to toss him into the barricade. Triple H goes for a Pedigree on the bottom half of the ring steps, but Kane powers out and backdrops Triple H onto the ground. Kane tosses Triple H back in the ring and hits a chokeslam, but Chyna a chair in hand, stops him from making the cover. Chyna says she wants to put Triple H down, only to smash Kane in the back, causing a DQ. Triple H takes the chair, hitting Kane across the back, and then in the head before hitting the Pedigree on the chair. Triple H & Chyna embrace in the ring as they stand tall.

The Verdict

It's far from the worst match I've seen, but I wouldn't say this is all that entertaining. The opening is pretty fine, but it eventually turns into a slow, plodding brawl. It's pretty bland aside from a few spots. Also, it ends in a DQ, which I think could've been done better. This match is not really worth watching.

Match #7: The Undertaker vs Big Bossman

We're gonna skip over Sable vs Tori for the Women's Championship because I've already covered it, and Shane McMahon vs X-Pac for the European Championship because it's fine. That brings us to the last match of this post, as The Undertaker takes on Big Bossman in a Hell in a Cell match. After being buried alive at the Rock Bottom event, Undertaker returned as a more demonic version of himself, forming the Ministry of Darkness by performing ritual sacrifices on various members of the WWF roster. Taker and the Ministry would turn their attention toward taking over the WWF, putting them in a feud with the Vince McMahon-led Corporation. With the Corporation's enforcer the Big Bossman stepping up to the plate, the two would face off in one of Taker's many signature match types, the Hell in a Cell...and it was BAD. Generally considered one of the worst matches the Undertaker had at WrestleMania, that match earned a DUD rating from Dave Meltzer, the second worst of Taker's WrestleMania matches, and holds a 2.24 rating Cagematch, the third worst rating of Taker's matches eligible for ratings. Look up any list or video ranking The Undertaker's WrestleMania matches, and this one is almost certainly at the bottom. The match is considered so bad that even its infamous post-match sequence wasn't enough to make people forget it. Let's take a look. 
The Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness theme is one of the best in wrestling history and I will accept no dissenting opinions. Just wanted to put that out there. The match starts with Bossman beating down Taker in the corner. This goes on for a while before Taker grabs Bossman by the throat and tosses him into the corner, where it's his turn to beat Bossman down in the corner. Taker whips Bossman across the ring, but Bossman catches him with a back elbow when he charges at him. Taker keeps control, however, with a clothesline that gets a two count. Taker strikes away at Bossman, but Bossman mounts a comeback with a swinging neckbreaker for a two-count. Taker sits up, only for Boss Man to boot him down. They repeat the spot, but a third go of it sees Taker catch the kick and take down Bossman. Taker beats down Bossman, sending him scurrying out of the ring. Bossman tries to drag Taker out of the ring, but Taker kicks him back into the cell wall. Taker rams Bossman into the wall three times, but Bossman turns the tables, reversing an Irish whip and sending Taker into the wall.
Bossman produces handcuffs, striking Taker in the face with them before cuffing him to the cell wall. Bossman grabs his nightstick, beating Taker with the stick until he bleeds, only for the cuff's chain to break when Taker falls down. Bossman continues hitting Taker with the stick, eventually choking him for a bit before hitting him with it again. Taker turns the tides, however, when he throws Bossman into the wall twice. Taker goes under the ring and grabs a chair, smashing Bossman across the back. Taker follows up with Snake Eyes into the cell wall, as a small "BORING" chant breaks out. Back in the ring, Bossman pokes Taker in the eye, but Taker ducks a clothesline and hits a leaping clothesline of his own for a two count. Taker goes for Old School, but Bossman kicks the top rope, causing Taker to crotch himself. Bossman follows up by shoving Taker off the apron and into the cell. Bossman brings Taker back into the ring, where the two trade blows until Taker hits a low blow. Taker goes for the Tombstone, but Bossman slips out. Bossman whips Taker across the ring and goes for a clothesline, but Taker ducks it and picks Bossman up, hits the Tombstone, and gets the three. And now, it's time to get incredibly uncomfortable.
In a moment I cannot fucking believe hasn't been scrubbed from Peacock, The Brood (Edge, Christian, and Gangrel) descend from the rafters and break open the roof of the cell. The three tie a noose to the roof of the cell and drop the loop down to Taker. Taker puts the loop around Bossman's neck before Paul Bearer raises the cage. Big Bossman raises up off the ground, hanging in the middle of the ring.
Like I said, I am stunned this hasn't been cut out of the Peacock version.

The Verdict

The match itself is not good, as it's another plodding brawl. That being said, It's not as bad as the Giant Gonzalez match, and it's not even a worse Hell in a Cell match than Seth Rollins vs The Fiend. But still, this is a bad match that you should definitely skip.

    Wrestlemania this year as a whole rocked (besides the Miz/Snoop Dog/Shane McMahon stuff) all the matches ranged from fun to good to great to awesome! Usos vs Zayn/Owens and the triple threat IC title match slapped. A shame Wyatt got sick or hurt because Iwould of liked to see if he could redeem himself after his last mania match.

      Yeah, overall WrestleMania was really good this year. A couple of rough spots (The Miz/Shane/Snoop legit got requested a couple of hours after it happened), but it was definitely one of the stronger ones they've done recently.

An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are at the top of the card. Triple H is on the rise to the main event. Mankind is playing the ultimate likable & respected babyface. Names like the Undertaker, Kane, and the Big Show are all major players. The undercard is stacked with big names like D-Generation X, D'Lo Brown, and Ken Shamrock, rising stars like The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian, and new signings like Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and the Dudley Boyz. The WWF was so red hot in 1999 that even an all-time bad WrestleMania in WrestleMania XV couldn't slow them down.
