Worst in the World: Trash at the Beach

Just over a month ago, I briefly covered the massive success the WWF was having in 1999. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are at the top of the card. Triple H is on the rise to the main event. Mankind is playing the ultimate likable & respected babyface. Names like the Undertaker, Kane, and the Big Show are all major players. The undercard is stacked with big names like D-Generation X, D'Lo Brown, and Ken Shamrock, rising stars like The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian, and new signings like Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, and the Dudley Boyz. The WWF was so red hot in 1999 that even an all-time bad WrestleMania in WrestleMania XV couldn't slow them down. But there was one other factor that made 1999 such a good year for the WWF; the fact that their main competitor, WCW, was beginning to crack.
At the same time the WWF was reaching the highest heights they'd ever reached at that point, WCW was beginning to fall into its worst booking tendencies. Going into the new year, Monday Nitro hadn't won the ratings battle against Monday Night Raw in over two months. Goldberg's World Heavyweight Championship reign & lengthy undefeated streak had been ended by Kevin Nash four days prior to the start of 1999, a move that led to the infamous Fingerpoke of Doom, where Nash would lay down for Hollywood Hogan to give him the title and reform the split nWo, just over a week later on Nitro. From that moment on, WCW had all but officially lost the Monday Night Wars, and the quality of the company as a whole started to dip. It's not quite as bad as 2000 would be, but 1999 is still a rough year for WCW. And the pay-per-view that shows this dip in quality as a whole is Bash at the Beach 1999.
Held in July of 1999, Bash at the Beach is a middle piece of possibly the worst three pay-per-view stretch in wrestling history, as it was preceded by The Great American Bash (which features the match where The Steiner Brothers attack Sting with dogs) and was followed by that year's Road Wild. All of those shows have overall ratings on Cagematch.net below 3/10. Bash at the Beach, however, stands out as the worst of the three with an overall rating of 1.80, the second lowest in WCW history, just above the Great American Bash 2000. Of the eight matches on the card, only two have a rating higher than one star from Dave Meltzer. It did not, however, win Worst Major Wrestling Show in the 1999 Wrestling Observer Awards, as the infamous Heroes of Wrestling pay-per-view would be held three months later and would easily take that award. But if we're setting the bar that low for Bash at the Beach, then there's really no point in having a bar at all. Today, let's take a look at the worst Bash at the Beach 1999 has to offer.
But before I do, just want to point out that the stage for this show is elite.
Between the sand, the wood pattern boardwalk-style ramp, and the bait shop off to the side, I love it. I miss super-extravagant stage designs for pay-per-views.

Match #1: Ernest Miller vs Disco Inferno

The opening match of Bash at the Beach 1999 pits funk against disco, as Ernest "The Cat" Miller with Sonny Onoo in his corner takes on Disco Inferno. Miller's in a weird spot where he's in between gimmicks, as he's still in his karate gear and using his Muhammad Ali-esque attitude, but he's also got his knock-off James Brown song and is dancing. This match came about after Miller & Disco had a dance contest on Nitro two weeks prior, which ended with Miller attacking Disco after the fans cheered him more. I cannot stress enough how vital dancing is to the storyline. It's so integral that, originally, the loser of this match would be banned from dancing anymore, a stipulation that was quickly removed. Honestly, love it, no notes. What people didn't love, however, was this match. Dave Meltzer would rate it a half a star out of five, and currently sits at a 2.58 on Cagematch.net.
Before the match, Miller calls himself the greatest dancer in the world, but is also a bad man who could beat up every redneck in the audience. Miller says they'll be having another dance contest before telling Disco to come out. Disco does come out, prompting Miller to repeat himself and say they're having another dance contest. Miller threatens to get his karate gi and whoop everyone in attendance if they don't vote for him before putting on his ruby slippers. Miller dances, and the crowd boos. Disco dances and the crowd cheers. Miller tries to attack Disco again, but Disco ducks him this time. The bell rings as Disco beats down Miller, striking him into the corner before grabbing Miller's hat and stomping away at it. Disco Irish whips Miller across the ring and into the corner before repeating the spot. Disco sends Miller across the ring a third time, but Miller slides out of the ring this time.
Outside the ring, Miller grabs a mic and says he's gonna call his mama and whoop somebody. Miller's pretty charismatic, but here, he just kind of keeps saying the exact same things over and over again. Miller gets back in the ring and goes for a standing side kick, but Disco dodges. Disco dodges some more kicks before charging Miller and beating him down on the mat. Disco follows up with an inverted Atomic Drop, followed by a standard Atomic Drop. Disco follows up with a clothesline and a cover, which gets a two-count. Disco slaps on a wristlock, but Miller breaks it with a strike to the throat, followed by a side kick. Miller chokes Disco before tossing him out of the ring, where Sonny Onoo kicks him twice as Miller distracts the referee. Onoo lands another kick, this one a jumping kick, before Miller exits the ring. Miller throws Disco into the guardrail and tries to whip him into another one, but Disco reverses it and sends Miller into the rail.
Disco stomps away at Miller before tossing him back in the ring, but Miller regains control with a blatant low blow that the referee only admonishes him for. Miller goes back to choking before striking away at Disco in the corner. Miller whips Disco into the ropes, but Disco bounces back and sunset flips Miller into a pin attempt. Miller kicks out and quickly floors Disco with a side kick. Miller hot dogs before making the cover, playing up to the crowd for so long that Bobby Heenan gives him, the heel, grief over it on commentary. Disco kicks out, prompting Miller to hit a bodyslam. Miller goes a People's Elbow-type of move, running & hitting the ropes before dropping down for a chop, but Disco moves and Miller slams his hand on the mat. Disco quickly bites that hand before running wild, striking away at Miller before hitting a back elbow and a body slam. Disco goes to the second rope, hits a diving elbow drop, and makes the cover, but Miller kicks out at two. Miller tries to respond with a slam, but Disco slips out and hits a Russian leg sweep, which gets a two-count.
Miller cuts off Disco's momentum with a side kick and a cover, but Disco kicks out at two. Disco tries to respond with the Chart Buster (the Stunner), but Miller blocks it and hits another side kick, with Disco kicking out of another pin attempt. Ernest Miller really does not have a diverse move set. It's either kicks or pretty much nothing. Disco fires back with an elbow to the back and strikes Miller into the corner, but Miller is able to create space by raking Disco's eyes. Miller tries to slip one of his ruby slippers on (presumably to kick Disco) while Onoo distracts the referee, but Disco stops him, stomping his un-covered foot before hitting Miller with the shoe. Disco makes the cover, but Onoo's distraction gives Miller enough time to kick out. Disco takes out Onoo with a Chart Buster into the top rope, but Miller takes the opportunity to slip the shoe on. Miller lands a roundhouse kick, makes the cover, and gets the three for the win.

The Verdict

A very basic match that isn't all that interesting. Miller's very limited in what he can actually do in the ring, and when Disco Inferno is the worker in the match, you can't really expect anything all that good. Far from the worst match I've ever seen, but not one I'd watch again.

Match #2: Rick Steiner vs Van Hammer

Following the opener, the second match on the card saw World Television Champion Rick Steiner defend the title against Van Hammer. This match came about after Van Hammer, who was on a winning streak, asked WCW President Ric Flair for a title shot...and he got it. This match earned a DUD (zero stars) rating from Dave Meltzer, and is too short to get ratings on Cagematch. The last Van Hammer match I reviewed devolved into a trainwreck in record time. Is he any better almost eight years later? Let's find out.
Before the match, Steiner cuts a promo, saying, and these are his exact words, "Me and Big Poppa Pump and the DFG" can do whatever they want. If I'm right that "DFG" is just short for Dog Faced Gremlin (nothing else comes up when I look it up except Rick Steiner) then I guess incoherent promos just run in the family. Must've skipped a generation with Bron Breakker. Van Hammer comes out, prompting Tony Schiavone to say that he's one of the hottest young stars in wrestling. That is a lie. The two lock up, with Steiner forcing Hammer into the corner. Steiner beats on Hammer and goes for a clothesline, but Hammer ducks it and hits a clothesline of his own. Hammer follows up with a forearm and a big boot that sends Steiner tumbling out of the ring. When Steiner gets back in the ring, Hammer hits a vertical suplex for a one count. Steiner fires back with strikes, beating down Hammer before choking him in the ropes.
Steiner tosses Hammer out of the ring, following him out and tossing him into the guard rail. Steiner pulls the ringside mats away before hitting a DDT on the concrete. Steiner makes the cover even though this isn't a falls count anywhere match, and punches the referee Mickie Jay when he gets out of the ring to yell at him. No disqualification for that because who cares, the company is dying. I don't know if this is what they were going for, but Van Hammer does respond with a low blow, which I think Mickie Jay pretends to not see as payback for Steiner hitting him. I'll accept that. The two roll back in the ring, where Hammer whips Steiner into a corner and hits a clothesline, but Steiner simply punches him to the ground. Steiner follows up with an elbow drop and makes the cover, but Van Hammer kicks out at two. Steiner starts crossface striking Hammer and clawing at his eyes before tossing him back out of the ring. Hammer takes the opportunity to grab a chair and, when Steiner follows him out, hits him over the head. Again, no disqualification.
Hammer throws Steiner back into the ring before going to the top rope and hitting a nice diving clothesline, which only gets a two-count. Hammer tries to follow up with a powerslam, only for Steiner to start biting him. And I know he's probably biting him in the stomach, but from the angle we see it at, there's a good portion of this where it looks like Steiner is biting Hammer directly on the penis. I swear, go watch the end of the match for yourself. It's insane. After the biting, Steiner low blows Hammer before kicking him in the dick. None of these are disqualifications, which means we've had four low blows on the night so far that have been seen by the referee that haven't caused a disqualification. Just absurd. Steiner follows up with a clothesline before going to the top rope. As Hammer gets to his feet, Steiner hits the diving bulldog for the three and the win to retain his title.

The Verdict

There are a couple of nice spots, but overall, another pretty bland match. A bland match that also has a shockingly bad enforcement of the kayfabe rules. That really took me out of the match, and it's getting knocked down a couple of spots because of it.

Match #3: David Flair vs Dean Malenko

Moving onto the third match on the card, we have United States Champion David Flair defending the title against Dean Malenko, which means yes, you can add Dean Malenko to the list of all-time great in-ring wrestlers who now have a singles match featured in the Worst in the World. The match came about because Ric Flair's gone mad with power. After winning the position of WCW President from Eric Bischoff on the Nitro after Starrcade 1998, WCW was free of a tyrannical heel authority figure for two whole months before Flair started abusing his power, which led to the break-up of the Four Horsemen, which featured Dean Malenko. But that wasn't all it led to, because with great power, comes great nepotism.
One of Flair's corrupt acts as president was to strip Scott Steiner of the United States title (Steiner was legitimately injured) and award it to none other than David Flair, his own son. Keep in mind that this was the same son that turned on him at SuperBrawl IX two months prior, and then just randomly made up with, but I digress. Nepo babies (famous people who benefit from nepotism, namely their famous parents) have become a recurring topic on this blog lately, and David Flair is about as good of an example of a nepo baby as you can get. As the son of Ric Flair, David was featured pretty prominently in the two years he was in WCW, despite the fact that, to put it bluntly, he just wasn't any good. Granted, this storyline pretty explicitly paints nepotism as a bad thing, as Flair would abuse his power and have his entourage (namely his Vice President Roddy Piper and Arn Anderson) make sure David kept the title. He defends the title here against Malenko, who had formed The Revolution with Shane Douglas, Perry Saturn, and fellow ex-Horseman Chris Benoit. But even with a fantastic wrestler like Malenko as his opponent, this David Flair match comes up short, as it earned a show-low negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer, and is too short to get a rating on Cagematch.
David Flair comes down to the ring with his father's entrance music and members of that aforementioned entourage, with Torrie Wilson on his arm and the elder Flair, Arn Anderson, crooked referee "Little Naitch" Charles Robinson, and WCW's not-at-all subtle Chyna knock-off Asya behind him. The bell rings and Ric immediately calls David over to give him advice. Malenko & David then circle the ring for over 15 seconds before locking up, with Malenko immediately throwing David to the ground. That's followed by another twenty seconds of the two circling the ring before we get another lock-up. Malenko quickly puts David in a headlock before smoothly transitioning & taking him down with a drop-toe hold. Another 15 seconds of circling go by before Malenko goes for another lock-up. David ducks it and grabs a waistlock, but Malenko quickly fights out. This is again followed by 15 seconds of circling and Malenko yelling at Ric at ringside. I get that David's pretty new to wrestling at this point (he'd only debuted in January 1999) and that him being in this position is thanks to nepotism, but man is not enjoyable. It's so blatant how much they're masking how inexperienced and not ready David is to be wrestling at all, let alone on a pay-per-view.
David shoves Malenko, prompting Malenko to rush him into the corner. Malenko stomps away at David in the corner before whipping him across the ring and hitting an avalanche. Malenko follows up with a suplex and goes to lock in the Cloverleaf, only for Ric to run in. Malenko quickly takes him out with a punch and locks in the Cloverleaf, only for Arn Anderson to run in and attack the referee Johnny Boone. Anderson hits Boone with the spinebuster before Charles Robinson runs in and rips his referee shirt off. Malenko punches Anderson as Asya gets in the ring, only to quickly get kicked & bodyslammed by Malenko. Malenko puts her in the Cloverleaf as Ric grabs the United States title. Ric hits Malenko with the title before dragging David over Malenko. Robinson counts the pin, giving David the win.

The Verdict

A complete farce in the just worst way possible. Again, I understand David not really earning the title and only being in the position he's in because of his dad is kind of the point, but I really don't need to see this on a pay-per-view. People paid money for this. This was a complete waste of time and a complete waste of a wrestler like Malenko.

Match #4: A Literal Garbage Match

We're gonna skip over the fourth match on the card, an eight-man elimination tag match between the No Limit Soldiers and the West Texas Rednecks. It doesn't exactly have the worst reviews, and while the whole feud between these two groups was a big backfire for WCW, I don't know if it's bad enough for this series. If someone wants me to take a look at it, I definitely will, but for now, I'm passing over it. That brings us to the fifth match on the card, the infamous Junkyard Invitational, which was a challenge laid out by Hak (The Sandman in a brief WCW stint) for a hardcore brawl in a junkyard, and the winner being the first man to escape said junkyard. "Trash at the Beach" was not just an obvious pun name for this post, there was an actual match on the show that heavily involved garbage. With the rise in popularity of ECW in the mid-to-late 90s, it was only fitting that the WWF and WCW would start to incorporate hardcore wrestling into their products. The WWF, for the most part, succeeded in that venture. WCW did not. In fact, the WCW hardcore division is generally an afterthought throughout the history of the company. The Junkyard Invitational is probably the most well-known moment from this hardcore division, and that is not a good thing. While it doesn't seem Dave Meltzer rated this match, it currently holds a 1.06 rating on Cagematch. This match has also gone down infamy due to how many people were legitimately injured during the match. I'll talk about those when I come across them, but for now, onto the match.
The participants (who are not told to us beforehand) are as follows:
  • Brian Knobbs
  • Ciclope (Halloween)
  • Dave Taylor
  • Fit Finlay
  • Hak
  • Horace (Hogan)
  • Hugh Morrus
  • Jerry Flynn
  • Johnny Grunge of Public Enemy
  • La Parka
  • Mikey Whipwreck
  • Rocco Rock of Public Enemy
  • Silver King
  • Steven Regal
The referee blows an air horn to start the match, and immediately it's chaos. Everyone just kind of runs around and throws stuff at people. Jerry Flynn walks around with a car bumper and doesn't hit anybody for a while. The Public Enemy team up to push a car over...not on anyone or towards anyway...just cause. This was Public Enemy's first appearance back in WCW after they were run out of the WWF by the APA, and that's how they returned. Brian Knobbs tosses someone Silver King into a stack of tires. The two fight & climb onto the wall of cars, while Jerry Flynn grabs a wire and touches the car with it. Nothing happens. He pulls away and goes to touch it again, and there's an explosion before he touches it. Knobbs & Silver King sell that explosion for about 15 seconds before they're already up & fighting again. Silver King punches Knobbs, causing him to fall onto the roof of a van. Silver King goes for a senton bomb, but Knobbs rolls out of the way and he crashes onto the roof.
On the ground, Steven Regal chokes Horace, while Fit Finlay hits La Parka with a bumper. Everyone's trading weapons shot while Hak sells something that we did not see. Most of the people in this match are dressed the exact same, and they use that overhead shot so many times that there are moments in the match where you can't really tell what's happening, and everything just kind of blurs together. Johnny Grunge bodyslams Mikey Whipwreck on the roof for the van. Hugh Morrus lays Finlay across the hood of a car and tries to hit an elbow drop, but Finlay dodges it. Finlay hits Morrus with something before Knobbs hits him with a trashcan. Jimmy Hart is also here, decked out in a hard hat. I think he's rooting for Hugh Morrus. Regal drops an elbow on Whipwreck laid out on a card hood, while Knobbs hits La Parka across the back with a bumper. Finlay then hits Knobbs with a trashcan before he & Flynn brawl off-screen. La Parka beats Knobbs with a pipe before we pan to see Flynn on the ground and Finlay holding a trash can. I hate this so much.
Morrus whips Rocco Rock into the side of the van before laying him across the hood of a car. He goes for another elbow drop and succeeds this time. A bunch of people brawl into a pile so Ciclope can dive off the wall of cars. What does Ciclope get from doing that big spot? Not being focused on by the camera, him never being named on commentary, Tony Schiavone wondering aloud who did the dive, and Bobby Heenan replying "Who knows? Who cares?" What a pittance. Hak, who was part of the pile and takes the brunt of the dive, is the only one who really stays down off it. Hak would leave this match with a separated shoulder and a neck injury, and while I can't be 100% sure, I'd say that this is where it happens. Those injuries would keep him sidelined for the remainder of his time in WCW, as he was released two months later. I'd say it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to fire someone known for hardcore wrestling when you're trying to start a hardcore division, but I don't think WCW really cared about their hardcore division all that much, so I digress
Morrus stomps away at someone under a car door, only for him to get blasted by Finlay with a trash can lid. Jerry Flynn & Silver King also hit people with lids before Horace tosses Rocco Rock into a car windshield. Silver King then hits Rocco with a bumper, while Knobbs dodges an entire row of car seats tossed by La Parka. Both men toss trash at each other before La Parka lands a shot with a chair. Meanwhile, Morrus tosses Silver King into the wall of cars before throwing him into a windshield. Here's where we get our next injury, as Silver King cuts his shoulder on the glass, an injury that apparently required 60 stitches. Finlay hits Knobbs & La Park with a trash can lid. Knobbs tries to fight back with a plastic crate, but Finlay fends him off before Dave Taylor hits him with what I think are two hubcaps. I think Ciclope whips Grunge into a detached car hood before Taylor beats him with his hubcaps. Meanwhile, Morrus rams Mikey Whipwreck's head into the wall of cars. Again, not sure if this is where it happens, but Mikey Whipwreck also leaves this match injured, as he suffers a concussion. But here's one where I definitely know someone gets hurt. After Whipwreck lays out on the car with the broken windshield's hood, Morrus dives at him. Whipwreck dodges and crashes into the broken windshield, where he cuts his hand and requires stitches. That one windshield has injured two people in this match.
More random brawling. I would just like to point out that nobody is really trying to escape and win the match, everyone is just brawling. What the fuck are we doing here. Knobbs puts a tire over Taylor's head and punches him a bunch, only for La Parka to run over and attack him. Bobby Heenan says it doesn't get any better than this. He is lying. More random brawling as Rocco & Horace are the first people to go anywhere near the exit, which is a chainlink fence they need to climb over. Rocco throws Horace into the fence and starts to climb over, but Horace is able to pull him down and stop him. Meanwhile, Silver King's side is just covered in blood as he beats down Knobbs. Hak has taken refuge on a car seat, but him being horribly injured doesn't mean he's safe from Finlay jabbing him with a car differential. Even more random brawling before a bunch of people gang up on Taylor. Hak, even though he can't lift his right arm, manages to brawl with Finlay over to a car in front of a car crusher, where he stuffs him in the trunk. Hak calls for a completely random forklift driver to lift up the car. I assume he's forklift certified, but if WCW is willing to have a match in a real junkyard where people could (and would) get seriously hurt, I wouldn't put it past them to just have some random guy manning it. Finlay gets out of the trunk before the car is lifted into the crusher, which crushes the car and causes a random explosion. In the chaos, Finlay kicks over a flaming trash can, which causes a car to explode, before climbing over the fence to win the match.

The Verdict

An absolute mess. Granted, I found this a lot more tolerable than all of the World War 3 matches. At least with this match, you're not trying to focus on three things at once. But even then, this match is pretty unenjoyable chaos It is all just brawling with very little selling and a complete lack of direction. Genuinely, it doesn't even feel like half the people in the match are trying to win the match. Add on just how legitimately dangerous & irresponsible this match was for WCW to have in a real junkyard, and you get an unpleasant watch.

Match #5: The Other Horrible Roddy Piper Boxing Match

We're going to skip over the sixth match on the card, a genuinely solid 3-on-2 handicap match between the Jersey Triad (Diamond Dallas Page, Kanyon, and Bam Bam Bigelow) and Chris Benoit & Perry Saturn for the Tag Team Championships. Side note; those five are really the MVPs of this terrible stretch of pay-per-views. That brings us to the seventh match. Two weeks ago, I did a multi-match post looking at several matches from WrestleMania. That post did not include the infamous boxing match between Roddy Piper and Mr. T, as I had already covered it. Well, turns out I can't escape terrible Roddy Piper boxing matches, because almost 13 years later, WCW decided to put Piper in another boxing match, that being his match with Buff Bagwell. After Bagwell had inadvertently cost Piper a match against Ric Flair at the Great American Bash with the WCW Presidency on the line, Piper turned heel and joined Flair & Arn Anderson to beat down Bagwell. That led to Flair appointing Piper as his Vice President, and set up this boxing match. This match earned a quarter-star rating from Meltzer, and has an atrocious show-low 0.50 rating on Cagematch, which puts it in the Flop 50 worst-rated matches on the site, currently tied for 18th worst. That Cagematch rating is actually worse than Piper's match with Mr. T (albeit with fewer total votes.) Let's see if this match managed to fall short of even the lowest expectations.
Before the match, Michael Buffer introduces the referee for this match, legendary boxing referee turned court show judge Mills Lane. Piper's out first in his wrestling gear sans kneepads (which makes him look infinitely more naked, as established by V1 from OSW Review) with Ric Flair by his side, while Buff comes out in custom boxing gear. Buff then grabs the mic and says he's got his own corner person...his mother Judy Bagwell, who trips coming down to ringside. Flair then takes the mic and tells Buff to walk away, but Buff stands his ground. Lane reads out the rules of the fight before the bell rings. Piper lands the majority of punches to start, but Buff lands a few of his own. Piper eventually punches Buff into the corner. Buff fights back, landing the majority of punches before a big right sends Piper stumbling into the corner. The two trade punches, with Bagwell staggering Piper with another significant blow. But it's Piper who gets the first knockdown, albeit in a dirty way, when he steps on Bagwell's foot as he hits a big right. Buff quickly stands up and answers the count. There's 35 seconds left in the first round as the two trade blows. Buff takes control with 10 seconds left, landing a right hook that causes Piper to stumble into the ropes. The two wrap up as the round ends, with Piper getting a cheap headbutt after the fact. Both men go back to their corners, where Flair sprays a foreign substance on Piper's gloves while Lane isn't looking.
Round 2 starts with Piper landing punches, which quickly starts to blind Buff. Piper continues to land blows until Lane steps in. Lane demands to see Piper's gloves while Piper keeps them behind his back, Flair seems to forget he needs to have a towel in his hands to wipe the gloves, Piper shows the gloves before they've been wiped for half a second, Lane just goes with it, and Flair wipes the gloves after the spot. Jesus fucking Christ. With Buff blind, Piper lays into him, with Buff going down to one knee. Piper continues punching Buff, forcing Lane to step in and allowing Judy to wipe Buff's eyes. Piper keeps control, with Buff flailing blindly before Piper lands a right hook that knocks Buff down. Buff gets to his feet again, but Piper quickly punches him into the corner. Buff turns the tables and starts laying into Piper in the corner, knocking him down. Piper answers the count before the second round ends. Before the bell rings for the next round, Piper gets a few shots in, so they just ring the bell and start the third round cause that's totally how boxing works.
Also totally how boxing works, Judy Bagwell hops up on the ring apron and bites Piper's ear. Judy then grabs a bucket from Buff's corner and dumps it on Piper's head. None of this gets a DQ or ends the match, by the way. Buff knocks Piper down with a punch and fends off Flair when he gets on the apron before climbing to the second rope...in a boxing match. Buff dives and hits the Buff Blockbuster n Piper...in a boxing match. Buff makes the cover...in a boxing match. Mills Lane counts the pin...in a boxing match. Buff wins...Jesus...

The Verdict

What was the point of all this? Why would they bother making this a boxing match if they were just gonna flagrantly throw out the rules of boxing when they wanted to. Genuinely, you could've just had them have a singles match and achieved the same result. This is just as bad of a worked boxing match as the Piper-Mr. T match, with neither man really throwing convincing punches. But say what you will about Piper vs Mr. T, at least that match committed to the gimmick. You can't even say that about this match. Even the spots that seem easy like Flair & Piper cheating don't end up right. It's a terrible showing all around.

Match #6: Nash & Sting vs Savage & Vicious

And so, we've reached our sixth and final match of this post; the main event pitting Kevin Nash & Sting against Randy Savage & Sid Vicious, with Nash's World Heavyweight Championship on the line for whoever scores the winning pinfall. After Nash won the title from Diamond Dallas Page at Slamboree, he would enter into a feud with Savage and his Team Madness stable which included his valet & real-life girlfriend Gorgeous George, Madusa, and Miss Madness (the future Molly Holly.) A major part of this feud featured the women of Team Madness luring a detrimentally horny Nash into a limousine, which was a trap set by Savage. Savage would drive the limo into position for a white Hummer to T-bone it and injure Nash. BUT WHO WAS DRIVING THE HUMMER!?...Don't worry about it. In what has become one of wrestling's more infamous unsolved mysteries, the identity of the driver was never revealed. WCW would present some suspects (even Sting, which they implied through him being behind the wheel of a black Hummer cause it's the same car, I guess?) but there was never an actual answer. This is all pre-Vince Russo, by the way, so you can't even point the blame at him for this.
So, how long was Nash out of action after this attempted vehicular manslaughter?...Six days. He missed one episode of Thunder and that was it (technically he missed an episode of WCW Saturday Night, but you know damn well he wasn't working those anyway.) Nash was all good in time to defend his title at the Great American Bash against Savage. That match ended in a disqualification when Sid Vicious returned to WCW for the first time since 1993, attacking Nash and joining Team Madness. Sting would enter the storyline when he saved Nash from a two-on-one beatdown from Savage & Vicious, but Nash still didn't trust him. Nash would retaliate against Savage by straight-up kidnapping Gorgeous George, which led to a paranoid Savage mistreating her (this includes the now infamous "SEND FOR THE MAN" bit from Botchamania), and then Nash opted to add the stipulation that anybody, including Sting, could win the belt in this match because he hasn't looked dumb enough in the last month. All this for a match that got a show-low negative one-star rating from Meltzer and a 1.27 rating on Cagematch. Let's take a look.
Savage & Vicious come down to the ring with the rest of Team Madness in tow. Sting & Savage start the match as the bell rings, only for Gorgeous George to walk over to Nash & Sting's side of the ring before they make contact. Savage flips out and goes to confront Nash, only for Sting to follow him out and punch him. Sting tosses Savage into a guard rail before tossing him back in the ring, where he floors Savage with a punch. Sting continues striking Savage before hitting an inverted Atomic Drop. Savage is able to tag out, however, and brings in Sid. Sid & Sting circle the ring for 25 seconds before locking up. Sid gains the advantage, clubbing Sting to the ground before going for a clothesline, but Sting ducks and hits a crossbody. Sting repeatedly rams Sid's head into the mat before clotheslining him out of the ring. Sid quickly gets back in and the two go for another lock-up, with Sid gaining advantage again with a knee to the gut. Sid punches Sting into the corner before whipping him across the ring. Sid goes for a corner avalanche, but Sting dodges him and kicks him into the corner. Sting tries to whip Sid to the opposite corner, but Sid reverses it, sending Sting into the corner before flooring him with a clothesline.
Savage tags in and floors Sting with a punch. Savage chokes Sting before distracting the referee (I think it's Nick Patrick), allowing Madusa to get some cheap shots in. Savage hits another punch before tagging Sid back in. Savage holds Sting in place for Sid to kick. Sid locks in a rear chinlock, only for Nash to run in and break up the hold with a punch. Savage just gets in the ring without a tag and starts punching Sting, so I guess he's the legal man now. Savage spits at Nash before choking Sting in the corner. Savage then distracts the referee again as Sid chokes Sting. Sting fights back and the two trade blows, with Sting getting the better of the exchange. Sting floors Savage with punches & kicks before hitting a dropkick. Sting forcefully tags in Nash, who fends off Savage & Sid with punches before hitting a sidewalk slam on Sid. Nash knees Savage in the corner before whipping him to the opposite corner and hitting a clothesline. Nash chokes Savage with his boot before dragging him to his team's corner. Nash elbows Savage in the corner before telling both of his opponents to suck it, hitting another elbow, and tagging in Sting.
Sting rakes Savage's eyes before kicking him to the ground. Savage rolls out of the ring, so Sting follows him out and tosses him into the guard rail. Sting throws him into the rail a second time and goes for the Stinger Splash into the rail, a move that never connects. It does not connect, with Savage moving and Sting crashing into the rail himself. Savage goes back into the ring and distracts the referee again so Sid can pick up Sting & drop him onto the rail. Savage keeps distracting the ref while Madusa & Miss Madness shove Sting into the ring post. Savage drags Sting back into the ring and chokes him. This leads to more distracting by Savage while Miss Madness chokes Sting. Savage takes some cheap shots at Nash while Sid gets in the ring. Again, the referee just lets this happen and Sid is the legal man now without a tag. Why even bother with a referee if they're just going to ignore the rules?
Sid hits a bodyslam before going back to the chinlock. Sting starts to fade and the referee lifts his arm and drops it, but Sting keeps it up o the third drop. Sting fights to his feet and out of the chinlock before ducking a clothesline and flooring Sid with a shoulder block. The collusion dazes Sting, however, and he falls & headbutts Sid directly in the penis. Both men tag out and Nash runs wild, hitting a big boot on Savage before punching Sid into the corner. Nash does the same to Savage in a different corner before kneeing Sid and hitting a sidewalk slam. Nash hits another big boot on Savage before going for the Jackknife Powerbomb on Sid, but Savage quickly stops him. Sting runs in to fend off both men, only for Madusa & Miss Madness to run in and attack him. This does not get anyone disqualified because the rules genuinely don't matter on this show one bit.
Sting no sells their attacks and smacks their heads together before hitting the Stinger Splash on Sid in the corner. Sting hits two more on Madusa & Miss Madness as Savage & Nash fight in another corner, putting them in position for Sting to complete the quadfecta and hit another Stinger Splash. Sid recovered, however, and hits a chokeslam on Sting before kicking him out of the ring. Nash dumps Sid onto the apron as Gorgeous George gets up on the apron. The referee is distracted by Sid as Nash goes to hit the Jackknife on Savage, only for George to run in and low blow Nash...except she apparently does it so lightly that Nash doesn't react to it, so she quickly does it again. Nash crumbles to the mat as Savage goes to the top rope. Sid hits a bodyslam, putting him in place for Savage to hit the elbow drop for the three, the win, and the title.

The Verdict

Another complete mess. The match itself is primarily a punch-kick affair that doesn't have any kind of structure rules-wise. Again, if everyone's just allowed to cheat in front of the referee, then why does anybody bother cheating behind the referee's back. It completely takes you out of the match. It's far from the worst match I've ever seen, but it's still not worth watching.

  1. Atleast wrestling copanies learned after this that wrestling and boxing are a terrible mix since there hasn't been a boxing match since.

Here's the match from The Bash which saw Dolph Ziggler has the difficult task of his career as he attempts to get a watchable match out of the Great Khali.

    1. Yeah, at least in WWE, it seems like they've definitely learned their lesson since the other times they've brought in boxers (Floyd Mayweather and Tyson Fury) they just had them wrestle and not try to work a boxing match.
Also, I'll add Ziggler vs Khali to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  5. Recently a promotion called ISPW released the "Rock 'n Wrestling" event on IWTV. Thought it was a pretty crappy nostalgia show and you could have some fun with the matches on there.

    1. I'll take a look at it. Genuinely didn't know a couple of the people on that show still wrestled (specifically, guys like Snitsky and Val Venis.) Thanks for the suggestion!

  6. Here's a match request that's a 6 women tag match that was the debut match of the future Mrs. Bray Wyatt: JoJo

    JoJo/Eva Marie/Natalya vs Aksana/Alicia Fox/Rosa Mendes Raw Oct 7 2013

    1. I'll add it to the list. That match had to have been some kind of rib on Eva Marie, because it was plainly apparent she was not ready to wrestle whatsoever. Thanks for the suggestion!

  7. Starrcade 1997 is arguably the most overhyped PPV that failed to deliver what it’s audience wanted. The main event is already listed, but three other matches are good candidates. The penultimate match between Larry Zbyszko and Eric Bischoff for control of Nitro. Also Goldberg vs Mongo McMichael as well as Buff Bagwell vs Lex Luger were both stinkers. So that’s three more suggestions on what was supposed to be WCW’s biggest show of all time. Who knows how the Monday Night Wars would have turned out if the company booked the show in proper fashion.

    Replies
    1. I'll add them to the list. Starrcade '97 might not have been any kind of "nail in the coffin" for the company like the Fingerpoke of Doom or Arquette winning the world title, but it's definitely a show that suggests that they weren't gonna be able to crush the WWF for too long. Thanks for the suggestions!

  8. On the most recent edition of AAA TripleMania there was a candidate for a red ranking match in Chessman vs Vampiro. A literal Alzheimer's sufferer not only wrestling, but getting kicked in the head. If you wanted you could also go into detail about the background of this match, how it was supposed to be Chessman against an influencer and that fell through because of, among other things, aptitude test cheating and sexual assault. Vampiro was the BACKUP.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'll add it to the list. I heard about Chessman-Vampiro not being good, but I had no idea about everything before it. I'll take a look at it. Thanks for the suggestion!

  12. Would you like to hear my ideal booking for the Uncle Howdy storyline where once a week I look at each month the storyline has been in and offer my hindsight on how it could of worked. If you say yes I'll start off with October and the next week I'll start off on November.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Holy Crap! I’m six days late on this suggestion! May 19th is Kane’s annual triggering day! I was the guy who made the Starrcade request and I wondered if anyone suggested the infamous Kane vs Kane match? It took place at Vengeance in June 2006.

You could actually do a multi-match special on the show since most people seem to have forgotten about this PPV. I’ll give you a painful reminder about four other candidates on the list.

HBK and HHH burying the Spirit Squad
John Cena vs Sabu Extreme Lumberjack Match
Ric Flair vs Mick Foley 2 of 3 falls
Umaga vs Eugene (who’s accompanied by Doink, Kamala and Hacksaw Jim Duggan)

Maybe you could put this candidate on your voter list somewhere in March or April next year.

    1. Or better yet, since May 19, 2024 takes place on a Sunday, maybe you could break from your new voting routine for one week and do a special on that event? What do you think?

    2. I'll add those to the list. I like the idea of doing this one for May 19th next year. Thanks for the suggestions!

  14. 24 years ago yesterday, David Flair wrestled El Dandy on WCW Monday Nitro. An amazing technical wrestler against a man who looks like he's never seen a ring in his entire life. It's sub-2 minutes so you could make a multi-match feature of David Flair's early Nitro matches, which aren't any better (e.g. vs. Sgt Buddy Lee Parker, vs. Erik Watts, vs. Meng, and him getting a title shot against Kevin Nash)

    1. I actually saw a clip of that match on TikTok a while back. It was rough, and I'll definitely take a look at some of his early Nitro matches. Thanks for the suggestion!

  15. Bing Bong it is Frost again. Seems like people aren't exactly too happy with that Adam Cole vs Chris Jericho match at DoN. I did not order the PPV so I did not watch it, but apparently there was a referee stoppage even though it was an unsanctioned match? Seems like a candidate to me.

    1. I'll take a look at it. I didn't get a chance to watch Double or Nothing, so I was surprised to see how bad the Cagematch rating was (3.70, the worst of Cole's career.) Thanks for the suggestion!

Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu
