Worst in the World: The "New York Rules" Episode of WCW Thunder

Yeah...all of it.

There are more than a few contenders for the worst episode of television WCW ever produced. There's the March 3rd, 1999 episode of Nitro, which the company decided to start off with, and I'm not exaggerating, zero matches for the ENTIRE FIRST HOUR of the show. Or there's the November 8th episode of Nitro that same year, which focused on a vacant World Heavyweight Championship tournament, and had only one of its 13 matches go longer than six minutes. And of course, there's the April 26th, 2000 episode of Thunder, a show infamous for David Arquette winning the world title. That episode has not just the lowest Cagematch.net rating of any episode of television WCW ever put on, but the lowest of any show WCW ever held. But WCW wasn't done there, because just one week later on the very next episode of Thunder, they put another legit contender for their worst episode of T.V. This is the New York Rules episode of Thunder.

What are New York Rules? No rules, no referees, and the wrestlers count their own pins. All of that in the only city in America where rules like that can happen...Memphis, Tennessee. There are eight matches on this episode of Thunder, all of which were chosen, in storyline, by the heel New Blood stable pulling names of the face Millionaire's Club out of Vince Russo's boot, held under "New York Rules" even if some of them have some very clear rules. It's an absolute mess of a show, with the main event actually sitting in the bottom 10 worst-rated matches on Cagematch. And I'm gonna cover every single match. Let's take a look.

Match #1: Chris Kanyon vs Jeff Jarrett

The first New York Rules match of the night saw Chris Kanyon take on Jeff Jarrett with Kimberly Page in his corner. Jarrett cuts a pre-match promo saying he picked Kanyon, and that "Hollywood wannabee" Kanyon has heat with him & Kimberly. I really hate using shoot terms just for the sake of using them. Kimberly then takes the mic and says her ex-husband Diamond Dallas Page wasn't good enough for her, and that everything he's achieved in wrestling is because of Eric Bischoff, and that everything he's become as a man is because of her. She calls him lame like all the marks in the crowd before Kanyon comes out.

Kanyon runs down to the ring, only for Jarrett to meet him in the entranceway. There's no bell as the two brawl. Kanyon tries to whip Jarrett into the guard rail, but Jarrett reverses it and sends Kanyon into the rail. Jarrett follows up by scooping Kanyon up and dropping him across the rail before running him across ringside and throwing him into the rail again. Jarrett throws Kanyon into the ring, where he stomps away at him. Jarrett picks Kanyon up for an Irish whip and goes for a clothesline, but Kanyon ducks it and runs the ropes. Jarrett tries to catch him with a back body drop, but Kanyon sidesteps him and hits a Russian Leg Sweep.

Kanyon beats Jarrett into the corner before trying to whip him to the opposite corner. Jarrett reverses it, sending Kanyon into the corner, and charges in, but Kanyon catches him with a boot up. Kanyon quickly climbs to the second rope, grabbing Jarrett before jumping off and hitting a Famouser. Kanyon follows up by climbing to the top rope and going for a splash, but Jarrett, legitimately, sits up and out of the way just in time.

Very little room for error on that spot.

Kanyon scrambles to his feet, only for Jarrett to quickly clothesline him out of the ring. Jarrett follows him out, slamming his head into the ring steps before running him across ringside and throwing him over the guard rail. Jarrett quickly pulls him back over the rail before grabbing a chair, smashing Kanyon across the back. Jarrett tosses Kanyon back in the ring, where he whips him to the ropes. Jarrett tries to follow up with a hip toss, but Kanyon blocks it and hits a swinging neckbreaker.

Kanyon runs wild, punching away at Jarrett before hitting 10 punches in the corner. Kanyon grabs Jarrett's head before jumping off the second rope, hitting a bulldog before Kimberly climbs in the ring with Jarrett's guitar. She's thwarted, however, when Diamond Dallas Page runs down, grabbing the guitar out of her hands. DDP smashes the guitar over her head as Jarrett low blows Kanyon. Jarrett sets up for The Stroke, only for DDP to grab him and hit the Diamond Cutter. Kanyon makes the cover and counts his own pin for the win.

The Verdict

It's a fairly entertaining brawl. I think having someone as talented as Kanyon paired with a strong wrestler like Jarrett kind of saves this whole concept as much as they could. It's not great, and the ending is overbooked, but nowhere near as bad as you'd expect from New York Rules.

Match #2: The Total Package vs The Wall

The last match had two wrestlers talented enough to make the messy New York Rules gimmick somewhat entertaining. This match doesn't. Match #2 sees Lex Luger, simply called "The Total Package" here, take on The Wall. The Wall was one of those later-era WCW guys who was just kind of...around most of the time. He's probably most famous for being THE WALL, BROTHER! Once again, this match is contested under New York Rules...maybe...you'll see what I mean

Tables have been set up all around ringside. Before the match, Vince Russo, alongside his security guards dragging Luger's manager Miss Elizabeth, comes down to ringside. The distraction allows The Wall to attack Luger from behind, forcing him into the corner. The Wall chokes Luger before stomping away at him as Russo takes a seat at commentary. Suddenly, Ric Flair's music hits as he runs down to the ring. Flair takes a headset from commentary, saying he's gonna make sure Russo doesn't get involved.

Back in the ring, The Wall continues beating down Luger. The cameras keep cutting to Russo & Flair at commentary, so actually keeping track of the match isn't the easiest. After mainly seeing The Wall control the match, Luger fires back with kicks, but The Wall keeps control with a knee to the gut followed by a backbreaker. At one point, Flair threatens Russo with a chair. Back in the ring, Luger mounts a comeback, ducking a big boot before landing punches followed by two clotheslines. Luger follows up with a running forearm and calls for the Torture Rack...and then just clotheslines The Wall out of the ring.

It's around here that the commentators start referring to the match as a Tables match. Is it? Let's find out. Luger follows The Wall out of the ring before whipping him into the guard rail. Luger turns his attention to Russo, allowing The Wall to hit him from behind. Flair crawls onto the announce table for some reason, allowing Russo to smash him across the back with his baseball bat. Russo hands The Wall the bat, only for Luger to pick him up in the Torture Rack. Russo hits Luger in the gut with the bat, causing him to drop The Wall right through the table. Luger's music hits so I guess this was a Tables match. NEW YORK RULES MEANS NO RULES! EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE RULE, I GUESS.

The Verdict

Fucking hell, what was this. A match that the show could barely even focus on ends in a way that goes against the entire concept of the show. Absolutely terrible. The actual wrestling isn't very interesting, and everything around it just made it worse.

Following the match, Russo dragged Miss Elizabeth into the ring and goaded Flair to come and fight him. Flair accepted, only for Russo to use Elizabeth as a human shield. Elizabeth low-blowed Russo and Flair tried to put Russo in the Figure Four, only for Buff Bagwell & Shane Douglas to run down and attack him. KroniK ran down to make the save and chased Bagwell & Douglas to the back. It's all just chaos and sucks ass. But we're not done yet, because Billy Kidman comes out and says he drew Flair's name, so now we've got a match. This was actually the match that got requested for me to cover, and inspired this entire post.

Match #3: Billy Kidman vs Ric Flair

The match actually starts during a commercial break, and we open on Flair chopping Kidman in the corner. Flair goes for an Irish whip to the opposite corner, but Kidman reverses it, sending Flair into the corner before flooring him with a dropkick. Kidman follows up with another dropkick, this time climbing to the top rope for the missile variety. Kidman picks up Flair and sets him on the top rope, climbing up after and hitting a superplex. Kidman continues beating down Flair before whipping him into the corner, with Flair flipping over the ropes and to the outside.

Kidman follows him out, only for Flair to chop him. Kidman responds with a club to the back before throwing Flair back in the ring. Kidman climbs back in the ring and hits a bodyslam before climbing out to the apron, leaping back over the top rope and hitting a leg drop. Kidman continues working over Flair, beating him down before climbing to the top rope. Kidman goes for a splash, but Flair rolls out of the way.

Flair stomps Kidman right in the penis before chopping away at him in the corner. Flair takes Kidman to another corner for more chops, only for Konnan & Rey Mysterio Jr. to run down and attack him. Konnan, Kidman, and Mysterio all beat down Flair, only for the Wolfpac theme to hit. Kevin Nash walks down to the ring and quickly takes out Mysterio with a back elbow. Konnan tries to whip Nash into the ropes, but Nash reverses it before flooring him with a big boot. Kidman retreats onto the ramp as Konnan hits the Jackknife on Konnan.

Kidman starts to walk to the back, only for Hulk Hogan, who he's feuding with, to attack him. Hogan beats Kidman down the ramp, throwing him back in the ring. Mysterio makes the save, pulling Kidman out of the ring as Mike Awesome's music hits. Awesome runs down to the ring, only for Hogan & Nash to easily beat him down. Hogan & Nash whip Awesome to the ropes, catching him with a double big boot when he bounces back. Nash hits the Jackknife on Awesome before he, Hogan, and Flair celebrate. Nash then takes the mic and says that Mike Awesome is the winner by outside interference, and everyone laughs. Fucking what?

The Verdict

The actual match isn't too bad, albeit unremarkable, but once again, it's overbooked like crazy. Five run-ins in a six-minute match. It's not going as low as Luger vs The Wall, but it's going lower than Kanyon vs Jarrett.

Match #4: DDP vs Vampiro

Oh my God, Vampiro is such a dweeb that Sting is able to attack him from behind by walking out before Vampiro, holding a black sheet up to hide behind, and waiting for Vampiro to walk right by him.

What a Three Stooges-ass way to get jumped. Sting beats down Vampiro, tossing him down off the stage before throwing him into the side of the stage. Sting bodyslams Vampiro on the concrete before grabbing a bucket of blood red liquid that was conveniently behind a light for some reason.

Also, I've mentioned this before, but Vampiro is literally in a group called "The New BLOOD", but referring to something that's obviously meant to be blood isn't allowed? On commentary, Mike Tenay even says Sting gave Vampiro "a bath" while Tony Schiavone straight up says "the red liquid" is "symbolic for New Blood." Makes no sense.

Sting drags Vampiro to ringside and tosses him in the ring. DDP immediately grabs him, hits the Diamond Cutter, and counts the three for the win.

Match #5: Sting vs Mike Awesome

Fresh off getting easily punked out earlier in the show, Mike Awesome's out next. He says he drew Sting's name tonight and tells Sting that, wherever he's gonna come from, to come down to the ring. Sting obliges, coming out from the back. Awesome rushes Sting as soon as he enters the ring, beating him down into the corner. Awesome whips Sting to the opposite corner, charging in right after and hitting a corner clothesline. Awesome follows up with a bodyslam and a splash before making the cover, but his back hurts too much from the Jackknife for him to count.

Sting fires back, punching & kicking Awesome into the corner, where he hits the 10 punches. Sting follows up with an inverted atomic drop before tossing Awesome out of the ring. Awesome walks around ringside until he reaches Chavo Guerrero Jr., Lash LeRoux, and Van Hammer, who are sitting in the crowd. Mike Tenay says they all got fired along with Hugh Morrus on the Nitro before this episode by Eric Bischoff.

Awesome shoves Guerrero, prompting all three men to hop the guard rail and beat down Awesome. The three throw Awesome back in the ring, where Sting stomps & punches Awesome into the corner. Sting whips Awesome to the opposite corner, where he hits a Stinger Splash. Sting follows up with a second splash before throwing Awesome to the ground. Sting locks in the Scorpion Death Lock. His music hits well before Awesome taps out, so I guess the match is over.

The Verdict

It's pretty much the same as Kidman-Flair match. Basic, inoffensive wrestling, with a screwy finish. It's not nearly as bad as Kidman-Flair in that regard, but this one's not going too high.

Match #6: Hulk Hogan vs Scott Steiner

Before the match, Steiner, with his freaks Midajah and Shakira, cuts a promo. He calls Hogan a has been that he is the man in wrestling now. He says that after he beats Hogan, him & his freaks are gonna prove he's the man to his wife. Hogan comes out, only for Steiner to pounce on him as he slides in the ring. Steiner beats Hogan into the corner before whipping him to the ropes. Steiner goes for a clothesline, but Hogan ducks it and punches away at Steiner. Hogan follows up with a clothesline, knocking Steiner down. Hogan hits another clothesline, prompting Steiner to roll out of the ring.

Hogan follows Steiner out, tossing him into the guard rail before chucking him over and into the crowd. Hogan climbs over as well before we see Hugh Morrus also in the crowd. Hogan holds Steiner in place as Morrus tees off on him. Hogan tosses Steiner back over the rail and back in the ring, with Morrus following them back to ringside. Hogan & Morrus climb into the ring and double-team Steiner, beating him down in the corner until Steiner hits a double-low blow on them. Steiner follows up with a double clothesline before calling to the back. However, nobody comes.

The lack of help allows Hogan to kick Steiner in the gut. Hogan follows up with punches before he & Morrus whip Steiner to the ropes. Hogan hits a big boot before Morrus floors Steiner with a clothesline. Steiner rolls out of the ring, walking to the back. So...that's the match, I guess.

The Verdict

It's another overbooked mess of a match with bland wrestling. This one wasn't as bad as Luger vs The Wall, but still, this is going low like that one.

Match #7: KroniK vs Bagwell & Douglas

Finally, after six straight singles matches, there's some variety with a tag match. WCW Tag Team Champions Bagwell & Douglas try to rush KroniK as they enter the ring, but KroniK easily fend them off. Bryan Clarke tosses Bagwell out of the ring before he & Brian Adams whip Douglas into the corner. Clarke chops Douglas before KroniK double-team whips Douglas to the ropes, catching him with a double-back elbow when he bounces back. Clarke drops an elbow on Douglas before Adams hits a leg drop. Adams picks Douglas up and holds him in place as Clarke hits the ropes, only for Bagwell to pull the ropes down, causing Clarke to fall out of the ring.

Bagwell stomps out Clarke before tossing him into the guard rail. Bagwell runs across ringside and tries to do it again on the opposite side, but Clarke blocks it and slams Bagwell's head into the rail. Clarke chops Bagwell outside the ring as Douglas hits a front suplex on Adams in the ring. Douglas follows up with a rolling neck snap before stomping away at him. Meanwhile, Clarke clotheslines Bagwell outside the ring, continuing the beatdown. Douglas drops an elbow on Adams in the ring, but Adams recovers and hits a fireman's carry DDT. Adams boots Douglas out of the ring, following him out as Bagwell turns the tables on Clarke. Bagwell throws Clarke back in the ring before slamming Adams' head into the steps.

Bagwell climbs in the ring, only for Clarke to quickly hit him with a sidewalk slam. Clarke follows up by beating down Bagwell in the corner as Douglas grabs one of the title belts and hits Adams with it. Back in the ring, Clarke whips Bagwell to the opposite corner and charges in, but Bagwell catches him with a boot up. Bagwell quickly climbs to the second rope and hits the Buff Blockbuster. Bagwell makes the cover and Douglas starts to count, only for Adams to run in (about 15 seconds after getting hit by a title belt) to stop the count.

Adams beats down Douglas in the corner as Clarke tries to clothesline Bagwell out of the ring. Bagwell ducks, however, and back drops Clarke out of the ring. Bagwell & Douglas double whip Adams to the ropes and try to hit him with the title belt when he bounces back, but Adams ducks it and hits a double clothesline. Clarke gets back in the ring, tossing Bagwell out of the ring before KroniK hits High Times (a double chokeslam) on Douglas. Adams makes the cover and Clarke counts the pin for the win.

The Verdict

Pure chaos in the worst way. Zero structure whatsoever and just mindless brawling. It's not the worst match on the show so far, but it's not good.

Match #8: The Main Event

And so, we've finally reached the infamous main event of the New York Rules episode of Thunder. A match that holds an abysmal 0.27/10 on Cagematch, and sits at #9 on the Flop 50 worst-rate matches on the site. Members of the New Blood, armed with weapons. makes their way out to the ring. Eric Bischoff takes a mic and says he's been thinking about tonight. He says the Millionaire's Club weren't content with a "level playing field", so instead they're gonna get "guerrilla warfare." Outcomes Super Dragon...I wish. The Millionaire's Club comes out. Ric Flair agrees to one more match; a battle royal, with the winner getting a world title shot at the Great American Bash. Bischoff accepts, prompting the Millionaire's Club to charge the ring.

The bell rings with 21 men in the ring, they are:

The commentators say it's 11 vs 11, and I think Bryan Clarke is supposed to be out there but...he just isn't. What the fuck is happening with this company? Bischoff, Vince Russo, and Candido's valet Tammy Lynn Sytch (Sunny) head to the back as everyone brawls in the ring. Very noticeably, Bryan Clarke arrives late to the match, making it 22 men in the ring. It's all just brawling, with zero spots whatsoever. It's already hard to follow, but WCW isn't done there. Even more people come down to the ring:

• Big Ron (Harris)
• Heavy D(on Harris)
• Stevie Ray
• Big T (Ahmed Johnson)

All of them enter the ring and start brawling, so I guess they're part of the match now, giving us 32 participants. The first elimination (that we see, at least) is Horace Hogan, with Bam Bam Bigelow & Billy Kidman dumping him over the top rope. It's all just brawling and nothing else. We see Flair & Douglas outside the ring, though not eliminated, with Flair hitting Douglas with a pipe. Tank Abbott emerges, walking down to the ring and joining the match. It's so chaotic that Tony Schiavone can't tell if Tank has actually gotten in the ring. Konnan's also here now, don't know when that happened. That makes 34 men. It's borderline impossible to follow this match.

Flair's still beating Douglas with the pipe as we see Mike Awesome dump Chris Kanyon over the top rope. More brawling before we get our third elimination, with Shawn Stasiak punching Curt Hennig over the top rope. KroniK gets eliminated in the background by The Wall and one of the Harris Brothers (fucking who knows which one) before a commercial break. I have no idea if anyone got eliminated during the commercial break, and the commentators never tell you. If they did, it wasn't enough to make the match easier to follow. The only thing of note is that Buff Bagwell backdropped The Total Package out of the ring and stole Johnny the Bull's hat.

Poor sport Luger gets revenge, however, by yanking Bagwell over the top rope and to the outside. Luger slams Bagwell down onto the steps. Vampiro ends up dumping Sting over the top rope, only for Sting to also pull him over the top rope and eliminating him as well. Sting throws Vampiro into the guardrail twice before slamming him into the commentary table. It then cuts to Hugh Morrus and Scott Steiner dumped out of the ring, and then we see that Van Hammer, Chavo Guerrero Jr., and Lash LeRoux have now entered the match. That makes 37, but we're still not done, as Madusa and Asya (WCW's not-at-all subtle Chyna knockoff) enter the ring. Madusa hops on Shane Douglas' back before Mona (Molly Holly) runs down and enters the ring, making it an even 40.

There's no elimination or anything of note for a long time before Jim Duggan's music hits. Duggan slides in the ring, beating people with his 2x4 and eliminating Bam Bam Bigelow, The Cat, Norman Smiley, and Tank Abbott. He then eliminates himself and commentators say he wasn't officially in the match. HOW THE FUCK DO THEY KNOW? HALF THE PEOPLE IN THE MATCH JUST ENTERED WHENEVER THEY FELT LIKE IT! There are 10 people left in the ring; DDP, The Wall, Jarrett, Douglas, Flair, Stasiak, Awesome, Kidman, Hulk Hogan, and Candido. The match then cuts to the parking lot, where a limo is parked. They've shown the limo, which has an "F.U.N.B" license plate, a couple of times throughout the show, and finally, someone emerges from it. The cameraman films them from the knees down as they walk through the backstage area.

Even with 10 people in the ring, it's all just meaningless brawling. Finally, the mystery person walks out from the back...IT'S MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE. Entrant #41. Savage runs wild, running through the New Blood before tossing Stasiak, The Wall, Awesome, and Candido out of the ring. Meanwhile, DDP takes himself & Jarrett out of the ring with a clothesline, eliminating both of them, while Savage exits the ring through the ropes. There are four men left in the ring, with Hogan beating down Kidman while Douglas beats down Flair. All the while, DDP & Jarrett are brawling up the ramp. And then, Bret Hart comes down to the ring with a chair...AND HE HITS HOGAN...AND THEN HE LEAVES...WAS BRET IN THE FUCKING MATCH!? Cagematch doesn't list him as a participant...BUT WHO FUCKING KNOWS. THIS IS OBSCENE CHAOS!

Hogan rolls out of the ring as Kidman takes the fight to Flair, only for Flair to whip him to the ropes. Hogan pulls the ropes down as he does, and Kidman falls over the ropes and gets eliminated. Meanwhile, up at the stage, DDP & Jarrett continue brawling while Vince Russo makes his way out from the back with a bat. Flair has put Douglas in the Figure Four while the cameras weren't on him, but Russo runs in and tries to hit Flair. The camera cuts away, and Tony Schiavone says Russo missed and hit Douglas. How? They're both lying on the ground, so I have no fucking idea.

Flair chases Russo out of the ring with the bat before smashing Douglas with it, knocking him over the top rope to the outside. Flair is announced as the winner, even though Hogan and Savage never went over the top rope. I just don't know anymore. Savage gets in the ring and celebrates with Flair as it cuts to Hogan & Kidman, both of whom have gone through the announce table. Eric Bischoff's here now, Mike Tenay says Bischoff hit Hogan with a baseball bat, and then Kidman draped his arm over Hogan before Bischoff counted a pin and raised his hand. I have no words to describe how incomprehensible this is.

Back on the stage, DDP & Jarrett have climbed up the set. BUT WAIT! THE CHAMP IS HERE! David Arquette walks out through the back with a guitar...AND THEN FALLS THROUGH THE STAGE.

So, apparently, Asya accidentally stepped on the gimmicked part of the stage that DDP & Jarrett would take a bump through after Arquette hit them and broke it, and then Arquette accidentally fell through the hole. It cuts to Savage helping Hogan up, and then cuts to Jarrett celebrating on the stage, and DDP is nowhere to be seen. This is the last match Randy Savage had in WCW. What a pittance.

Also, side note, apparently Rey Mystero Jr. and Juventud Guerrera were in this match, according to Cagematch and the Internet Wrestling Database. FUCKING WHO KNOWS WHERE, OR WHEN, cause I don't think I saw them AT ALL.

The Verdict

IT'S AWFUL. IT'S FUCKING INCOMPREHENSIBLE! YOU CAN BARELY MAKE OUT ANYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE MATCH! People show up randomly and leave randomly, so many people just start brawling at ringside, you don't even see at least half of the people get eliminated. It's pure chaos, and an horrendous viewing experience. Legitimately, the only thing that's even comparable in terms of incomprehension...is World War 3. Genuinely, this is as hard to follow as the stipulation that currently holds the spot for the titular Worst in the World (excluding red-tier matches.) But there's one thing that separates them...World War 3 is hard to follow because there are three rings full of people at the same time. This match has one ring and is just as hard, if not even harder to follow than those matches. So, with that in mind...we've got a new Worst in the World.
