Worst in the World: The Women's Tag Team Turmoil-WrestleMania 37 (Night 1)

Special thanks to Otter Empire for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.
A few months back, I covered Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt from night two of WrestleMania 37. In that post, I mentioned that, despite the bar being set pretty low by one match the previous night, Orton vs Wyatt managed to slide under it with plenty of room to spare and come out as the worst match across the two nights. The match that set that bar? The Women's Tag Team Turmoil match, with the winner getting a shot at the Women's Tag Team Championships on Night 2. And while it might have escaped the title of "Worst Match of WrestleMania 37", being second-worst when the worst was Orton vs Wyatt is the farthest thing from an accomplishment. Let's get into this.
Like with the last tag team gauntlet match I've covered, a big problem with this match comes down to the teams participating. The teams are:
  • Lana & Naomi
  • Billie Kay & Carmella
  • The Riott Squad (Liv Morgan & Ruby Riott)
  • Dana Brooke & Mandy Rose
  • Natalya & Tamina
Five teams and all but one of them are just two women thrown together. Some of them had only been a team for a few months, while Billie Kay & Carmella had literally become a team the night before on SmackDown. That's the state of the women's tag division. If you're going to book a match with multiple tag teams in it, you might want to make sure you actually have...multiple tag teams. Just a thought.
Lana & Naomi vs Billie Kay & Carmella is the first matchup of the gauntlet, which gives us two entrances that are great for completely different reasons. Naomi, in general, just has a cool entrance. Carmella, however, doesn't get her big sheet for her entrance, so Billie Kay tries to fix that problem by running out with a tiny sheet of her own, which Carmella just swats away.
Even better, Billie tries to copy Carmella strut all the way down to the ramp.
You can say whatever you want about Billie Kay in the ring, but she had some of the best comedic chops in the company. She's only been gone for four months and I miss her so much. It's during Billie & Carmella's entrance that Michael Cole calls them a "makeshift tag team", which is a laughable thing to say like it's a bad thing when they're about to face a team that only started tagging together in February.
Carmella starts the match by pie-facing Naomi, who responds with a kick flurry.
I can't even sugar coat it, Naomi's version of that is utter trash. She basically just gives people the lightest kicks possible while her opponent just kind of stands there or, in this case, has to MOVE INTO THE KICKS because Naomi's backing up. I really hope that the Mike Bailey to WWE rumors puts an end to her doing it. Lana tags in and hits an axe kick in the corner followed by a bulldog and double knees to the back. Carmella fights back with a hair pull takedown before throwing Lana into her boot in the corner, then having Billie do the same when she tags her in. Lana regains control with a sloppy headscissor into a Russian leg sweep. Lana tags in Naomi, who runs wild on the heels before hitting a springboard roundhouse kick on Billie. Lana makes the tag and attempts to hit a roundhouse of her own. It doesn't go well.
Michael Cole tries to cover for it by saying she "didn't get all of it", but he's being super generous with that. Realizing how bad that botch was, Lana quickly tags Naomi back in for a double facebuster and a cover, but Carmella breaks it up. Carmella then dodges a much better roundhouse from Lana and superkicks her, only to get chucked out of the ring by Naomi. Billie rolls up Naomi and, with an assist from Carmella, gets the three and eliminates Naomi & Lana.
The only real team in the match is out next as the Riott Squad makes their entrance in Joker and Harley Quinn-inspired gear. Liv starts off hot, knocking Carmella off the apron before dropkicking Billie. Ruby tags in for a drop toe hold into the ropes followed by a dropkick by Liv for a near fall. Liv tags back in, but Billie is able to turn the tides, countering a double team and sending Ruby to the outside, and flooring Liv with a forearm. Carmella tags back in and stomps away at Liv in the corner before hitting a Bronco Buster. Billie tags back in for an overhead suplex followed by a superkick by Carmella, but Ruby breaks up the pinfall. Carmella & Ruby fight to the apron before Billie knocks Ruby down with a big boot. Billie rolls up Liv and Carmella tries to cheat again, but the referee catches her. Ruby takes out Carmella, allowing the Riott Squad to hit the Codebreaker/diving senton combo for the three to eliminate Billie & Carmella. After the fall, however, sore loser Carmella superkicks Liv.
This leaves the Riott Squad at a disadvantage for the next team; Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke, who make their entrance without any issues whatsoever. That's what WWE and Peacock would like you to believe because they've edited out Mandy pulling an Último Dragón and, as the British Bulldog would say, falling flat on her fookin ass, slipping on the wet ramp thanks to the bad weather on Night 1.
Poor Mandy. However, it's very weird that WWE would edit this out of the show, only to start an angle between Mandy & Dana and Nia Jax & Shayna Baszler two days later on RAW. Ruby tries to get the jump on Mandy & Dana, but Mandy is able to take control with a bicycle kick. Dana tags in and follows up with a blockbuster, but Liv breaks up the pinfall. Ruby tries to fight back, but Dana keeps control with a spinning neckbreaker for a near fall. Mandy tags back and stomps away at Ruby in the corner, but Ruby fights back and, after getting a near fall off a roll-up, tags in Liv. Liv runs wild on Mandy, hitting an enziguri and a double stomp for a near fall. Ruby tags back for a Codebreaker/Riot Kick combo, but Dana breaks up the fall. Liv tags back in, but Mandy regains control with a shoulder block in the corner. Ruby tries to run in, but Mandy takes her out with an awesome inverted tilt-a-whirl slam. Liv fights back and goes to the top rope, but a distraction from Dana allows Mandy to meet her up top. Dana makes a blind tag before Mandy hits a superplex, allowing Dana to hit a senton bomb. Dana makes the cover as Mandy holds off Ruby, but Liv reverses the cover and pins Dana. She just took a finisher and immediately got the win right after. What? Also, Greg Hamilton incorrectly announces the Riott Squad was eliminated.
We get the fifth and final team to enter with Natalya & Tamina. Natalya immediately goes for the Sharpshooter, but Liv blocks it and nearly gets the win off a roll-up. Liv goes for a wheelbarrow, but Natalya blocks it and drops Liv across the top rope. Tamina tags in and beats down on Liv in the corner before tagging Natalya back in for an assisted powerbomb. Ruby breaks up the fall but quickly eats a forearm from Tamina. The heels beat down Liv in the corner, but Liv manages to block a Samoan Drop attempt from Tamina and gets to the top rope. Ruby tags in as Liv takes out Natalya with a wrecking ball dropkick before the Riott Squad hits a weird wheelbarrow into a spear on Tamina. Ruby follows up with a superkick before tagging in Liv for the Codebreaker/diving senton again, but Tamina kicks out. Ruby tags back in, but Tamina takes control with a superkick on Liv before flooring Ruby with a big boot. Natalya tags in and the two hit the Hart Attack on Ruby. Natalya goes for the Sharpshooter but opts to instead tag Tamina back in for the Superfly Splash. Tamina makes the cover and gets the three for the win.

The Verdict

I'm going to be honest, I remember this being a lot worse. Yeah, it's not good or memorable, but it's far from the worst thing I've ever seen. I'd say once you get past the first match-up with Lana & Naomi vs Billie Kay & Carmella, it's a pretty smooth match. And even with the first part of the match being rough, the presence of Billie Kay is enough to cushion that, at least for me. I think the problem is more to do with this type of match. Tag Team Turmoil matches almost always feel like a ton of matches on hyperdrive. Like it's Fire Pro Wrestling World, and someone turned it to 800% speed. Hot tags need time to build in order for them to be really effective. Here, they just happen two minutes into each match. Yeah, this match isn't really worth watching, but it's really not worth skipping either.

    1. Completely forget to put it at the end, but it's Retribution vs The Hurt Business from the October 26th, 2020 episode of RAW. I felt like having a series about the worst matches in wrestling and not having at least one appearance from Slapjack and the gang would be a disservice

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
