Worst in the World: WrestleMania 2 (But Mostly The New York Part): How To Go "Too Big"

There have been plenty of missteps throughout the history of WrestleMania. We've looked at plenty of them in the 7+ years since I started this series, and we've looked at a few in the past month. To close out April, we're going to look at arguably the first big dud in the history of WrestleMania in the second-ever edition, WrestleMania 2. Following the outright success of the inaugural WrestleMania that cemented the WWF's push for the top promotion in the country, the company decided to go even bigger for WrestleMania 2 the following year. Not only would the WWF be holding its biggest show of the year, but they would hold it in three separate venues. For the first time, WrestleMania 2 would be split between three cities across the United States, with portions being held in New York, "Chicago", and Los Angeles. Combined, WrestleMania 2 would have an attendance of over 40,000, over double the attendance of the first edition. However, as you probably know already, it's been the only WrestleMania to be held across three cities.
In hindsight, WrestleMania 2 feels like the WWF overplaying their hand. Looking at the card, there are definitely enough big names and talented wrestlers to make this feel like a WrestleMania. Sure, some performers have to be left off the card and some matches would have to be scrapped, but you could definitely have made a good card with what the WWF had. However, by splitting everything into three portions in three different venues, you now have to spread out that star power instead of consolidating. As such, there are plenty of matches at WrestleMania 2 that don't feel like WrestleMania matches at all, with almost half of the matches not even reaching the 5-minute threshold to be eligible for ratings on Cagematch.net. Overall, WrestleMania 2 is just flat-out bad. I've already looked at its absolute worst match, the infamous minus 5-star rated boxing match between Roddy Piper and Mr. T, but I've still got six other matches I want to take a look at.

New York

We start this look-back at WrestleMania 2 with the entire reason this look-back exists, the opening third of the show held in Uniondale, New York. I had gotten the request to cover the entire New York portion of the show from an anonymous user, and I had decided to add on a few matches from the other portions myself. Seriously, the New York portion of this show has pretty much zero redeeming qualities to it. I'm covering three of the four matches held in New York, and the only reason I'm not covering all of them is that the fourth is the aforementioned Roddy Piper-Mr. T boxing match I've already covered.

Match #1: Paul Orndorff vs The Magnificent Muraco

The first match I'll be looking at is the show's opening contest between Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff and The Magnificent Muraco (better known simply as Don Muraco) with Mr. Fuji in his corner. One year removed from last year's main event, Orndorff turned face and sided with Hulk Hogan to feud with his former teammates Roddy Piper & Cowboy Bob Orton. After Hogan was attacked by King Kong Bundy (who was managed by Orndorff's old manager Bobby Heenan) and Don Muraco, Orndorff was set to face Muraco here. Usually, you want to kick off the show with a bang. This match was not a bang, as it earned a DUD (zero stars) rating from Dave Meltzer, and is too short to get a rating on Cagematch.net. Get used to reading that last part.
The match starts with an intense lockup, which ends with a break. Another lock-up sees Orndorff putting on a headlock. Muraco is able to push out before hitting a bodyslam. Orndorff responds with an up-kick before hitting a bodyslam of his own. He then does that incredibly racist slant-eye gesture toward Mr. Fuji. Jesus...Unsurprisingly, that has been scrubbed from Peacock. Back to the lockup, which sees Muraco force Orndorff into the corner. Muraco lands a few strikes and tries to whip Orndorff across the ring. Orndorff reverses it, however, sending Muraco into the corner before hitting a back body drop. Orndorff follows up with an arm drag and a drop-toe hold before putting Muraco slapping on an armbar. Muraco tries to escape with a fun little counter, stepping onto the ropes and springing back for an arm drag, but Orndorff keeps hold of the armbar. Orndorff transitions to a wristlock, cutting off another attempt by Muraco to break the hold.
After nearly two full minutes, Muraco finally breaks the hold with a Samoan drop. Muraco takes control, throwing Orndorff's head into the top turnbuckle. Orndorff fires back, the two trading blows before they both tumble out of the ring. The two brawl at ringside as the referee counts them both out. Orndorff shoves Muraco into the ring post and grabs a chair as the crowd loudly chants "BULLSHIT!"

The Verdict

It starts off fine, but the fact that the majority of the match ends up being a single armbar makes this not a very entertaining watch.

Match #2: Randy Savage vs George Steele

Following Orndorff vs Muraco, we got an Intercontinental Championship match, where Randy Savage defended the title against George "The Animal" Steele. Steele had fallen for Savage's valet Miss Elizabeth, an infatuation that would ultimately cost him a match against Savage at Saturday Night's Main Event IV. Between then and WrestleMania 2, Savage would beat Tito Santana for the Intercontinental title, setting up this title match. As good as Randy Savage was, there's only so much you can do with a 40-year-old George Steele, who was never really known for his in-ring work. This match earned a single star from Meltzer, one of the lowest of Savage's WWF career, and sits at a 3.40 rating on Cagematch, the lowest of Savage's WWF run.
The match starts with Steele trying to lock up, only for Savage to quickly dip out of the ring. Savage hops back in the ring, but leaves the ring again when Steele tries to lock up. Savage grabs a chair from ringside and hits the ropes before re-entering the ring. Savage again flees before making contact with Steele, but Steel follows suit this time. Steele chases Savage into the ring, only for Savage to quickly dip out again. Steele follows him out and chases him again. Savage tries to climb back into the ring, but Steele grabs his ankle and bites him, which Savage sells. His ankle is covered by a thick wrestling boot, so that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I digress. Savage manages to catch Steele with a high knee as he gets back in the ring, but Steele keeps control, lifting Savage up by the throat and tossing him down to the mat.
Steele follows up with a punch to the throat, but gets himself distracted by Elizabeth right after. Steele leans through the ropes, allowing Savage to tie him up in them and stomp away at him. Savage follows up by going to the top rope and hitting a diving crossbody. Savage makes the cover, but Steele kicks out with enough power to send Savage out of the ring. Savage quickly gets back in, only for Steele to punch him and send him right back out. Savage crawls under the ring, crawling through to the other side as Steele looks for him. Savage catches him with a knee to the back. Steele responds by biting Savage's arm, causing Savage to retreat from the ring. Savage grabs a bouquet of flowers (according to Vince McMahon on commentary, they were from fans for Elizabeth), running back into the ring to hit Steele. Steele again bites Savage's arm before throwing him into the corner. Steele shoves the flowers into Savage's face before hitting him with them and tossing Savage into the corner. Steele then takes the opportunity to eat one of the turnbuckles, shoving the filling into Savage's face when he tries to attack, causing Savage to retreat from the ring.
Steele follows him out, chasing him around ringside until he comes across Elizabeth. This distracts him, allowing Savage to climb to the top rope and hit a diving double axe handle. Savage throws Steele back in the ring, hits a bodyslam, and climbs to the top for the diving elbow drop. Savage connects, makes the cover, and gets the TWO. Vince says that's the first time someone's kicked out of the elbow drop, and I am stunned they gave that distinction to GEORGE "THE ANIMAL" STEELE in a five-minute undercard match. Who would've thought? Steele grabs Savage by the nose and tosses him into the corner, which Savage takes a big bump for. When Steele goes in towards him, however, Savage double legs him, covers him with his feet on the ropes, and pins him for the three and the win to retain his title. Steele immediately eats another turnbuckle. Trying to eat away the pain...I've been there...

The Verdict

Better than the previous match, but still not a good showing. It's all just filler and there is very little actual wrestling done. This is another skip, in my opinion.

Match #3: Jake Roberts vs George Wells

Up next is Jake "The Snake" Roberts taking on George Wells. Roberts is only a month into his WWF career here, having jumped over from Mid-South Wrestling earlier in the year. He faces Wells, a former all-star in the Canadian Football League that would go on to have a 14-year career in wrestling, including a two-year stint in the WWF. This match is probably the highlight of his career. It's also the biggest example of a match that doesn't feel like a WrestleMania match at all. Literally, this same match-up happens a week later on an episode of Prime Time Wrestling. This match would earn a respectable two-star rating from Meltzer, and doesn't go long enough for a rating on Cagematch.net. This is also, ratings-wise, the high point of the New York portion. That's how bad the New York part of WrestleMania 2 is.
Roberts wastes no time, slapping Wells as soon as he gets in the ring. Wells responds by taking the fight right to him, punching away at him before hitting a back body drop. Wells fires back with more punches until Roberts kicks him in the gut and tosses him out of the ring. Roberts follows him out, but Wells clocks him and tosses him back in the ring. Roberts does a leapfrog, but Wells catches him with a shoulder block, followed by a stomp and a headbutt. Wells whips Roberts into the corner twice before hitting a nice little headscissor takedown. Wells follows up with a bodyslam, a chop, a knee lift, and a powerslam before making the cover, but Roberts kicks out. Roberts responds with a thumb to the eye before sliding out of the ring. Wells follows him out, chasing Roberts back into the ring. Roberts capitalizes, however, catching Wells with a knee lift when he gets back in the ring. Roberts follows up with the DDT for the three and the win. Roberts quickly grabs his snake bag and lays the python Damien across him. This causes Wells to froth at the mouth.

The Verdict

Chicago...?

Like I said, we're skipping over the boxing match between Roddy Piper and Mr. T, which means we're done with the New York portion of the match...thank God. That brings us to portion #2, held in "Chicago, Illinois." I put that in quotations because it actually takes place in Rosemont, which is around 20 miles outside of Chicago. I don't know if other countries do this, but they do this a lot in the United States where sports teams will be from one city, but not actually play there (or in this case, WrestleMania is held in a smaller city, but they say it's the bigger city.) Rosemont is essentially "Fake Chicago", and I feel like most major cities in the U.S. have one. For any of my fellow Clevelanders, "Fake Cleveland" is Richfield. But with that unrelated tangent out of the way, onto the "Chicago" portion.

Match #4: The Fabulous Moolah vs Velvet McIntyre

The opening contest in Fake Chicago was a Women's Championship match, where The Fabulous Moolah defended the title against Velvet McIntyre. Moolah won the title from Wendi Richter in the "Original Screwjob" where she wrestled under a mask as "The Spider Lady" and pinned Richter while the referee shoot-counted the pin. McIntyre is an Irish wrestler who, after primarily wrestling in the Women's Tag division early in her WWF career, began a singles career in late 1985. This match received a DUD rating from Meltzer, and is too short to receive ratings on Cagematch.
Moolah attacks McIntyre before the bell rings, and follows it up with the only move she knows how to do; yanking someone down by their hair. Moolah follows up with a punch and a forearm, but McIntyre is able to duck a clothesline before hitting a single-leg dropkick. McIntyre follows up with another single-leg dropkick and a back elbow before hitting a bodyslam and going to the second rope. McIntyre goes for a splash, but Moolah dodges and McIntyre crashes on the mat. Apparently, one of McIntyre's singlet straps snapped because of this, prompting a messy finish. Moolah makes the cover, and even though McIntyre's leg is pretty much entirely in the ropes, the referee counts the three and the win to Moolah.

The Verdict

It's the definition of a nothing match that might not be terrible, but isn't really worth watching either.

Match #5: Corporal Kirchner vs Nikolai Volkoff

Following the Women's Championship match, we then got a Flag match between Corporal Kirchner and Nikolai Volkoff with Freddie Blassie in his corner, where the winner gets to wave their flag, I guess. It's not the normal Flag match where you actually have to do anything with the flag, you just kind of do stuff with it after. It's the cliche "USA vs The World" story you've undoubtedly seen a million times before. Kirchner is American and loves America, Volkoff is not American and hates America, and now they fight for the pride of their country or something. The match also earned a DUD from Meltzer, and is too short to get a rating on Cagematch.
Volkoff starts with a weird little spin kick followed by a knee to the gut. Volkoff tosses Kirchner out of the ring, following him out and tossing him into the ring post. Volkoff bites Kirchner's forehead before tossing him back into the ring post. Back in the ring, Kirchner fights back with punches, sending Volkoff into the corner. Kirchner stays on the attack until the referee tries to pull him off. Kirchner, however, accidentally catches the ref with a back elbow, knocking him out. Blassie tries to capitalize and toss his walking cane to Volkoff, but Kirchner intercepts it. Kirchner clocks Volkoff and makes the cover as the referee recovers and counts the three. Kirchner waves his flag in victory.

The Verdict

Another match without anything of real substance. It's not terrible, but not worth watching.

Los Angeles

We're gonna skip over the last two matches of the Greater Chicago area portion, the harmlessly fun WWF vs NFL Battle Royal won by Andre the Giant, and the easy choice for match of the night (and probably the best of the first two WrestleManias) in the Tag Team Championship match between the British Bulldogs and the Dream Team (Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake.) That moves us over to the third and final portion of the show held in Los Angeles. In something I didn't plan out, this portion was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the same venue where WrestleMania 7, which I covered earlier this month, ended up being held. I'll be skipping over L.A.'s opening match between Ricky Steamboat and Hercules Hernandez, which is solid. That brings us to the second match, and the only one from the Los Angeles portion we'll be looking at.

Match #6: Adrian Adonis vs Uncle Elmer

That match was between Adrian Adonis (with Jimmy Hart in his corner) and Uncle Elmer. Adonis had switched from his original biker gimmick in late 1985 and is now "Adorable" Adrian Adonis, an effeminate type. His opponent Elmer had wrestled for 25 years prior to joining the WWF, where he debuted as part of the Hillbillies with Hillbilly Jim, Cousin Luke, and Cousin Junior. Uncle Elmer would be just one of 27 different gimmick names Stanley Frazier would use in his career.
I have never seen a Cagematch profile where the "Also known as" section goes into three lines. This match earned a single star from Dave Meltzer, and is not long enough to get ratings on Cagematch.net.
Adonis comes down to the ring in a mumu
 A young Homer Simpson takes notes. I legitimately don't think the bell rings to start the match, as Elmer chases Adonis & Jimmy Hart out of the ring and they hug at ringside, where the referee starts to count Adonis out. Uncle Elmer's music just keeps playing until Adonis finally gets in the ring. Elmer lands the first blow, punching him before whipping him into the corner, which Adonis takes a big bump for. Elmer then punches Adonis again before stumbling, falling over, and needing to use the ropes to stand back up. Jesus...Adonis comically flops out of the ring before ripping one of the ring skirts off the apron. Adonis climbs back into the ring, where Elmer punches him again, causing Elmer to take a shoulder bump into the ring post and fall out of the ring again. Shawn Michaels must've watched this match and took inspiration for his match with Hulk Hogan, because this is comical selling. Elmer drags Adonis onto the ring, ripping his dress off before tossing him back in the ring. Elmer follows up by bumping Adonis with his tummy, causing him to stumble back, flip over the ropes, and tie himself up in said ropes. Elmer gets a few shots in before Adonis gets free. Adonis finally gets some offense, hitting a few punches. Elmer fires back with a punch of his own before whipping Adonis into the corner and splashing him. Elmer tries to follow up with a leg drop, but Adonis dodges. Despite taking virtually no offense in the match, missing the move completely incapacitates Elmer, allowing Adonis to climb to the top rope and hit a diving headbutt for the three and the win. Adonis gets a few shots in after the match, as well.

The Verdict

Just a horrible match. Elmer could not do anything, and aside from Adonis' selling being so outrageous, there's really nothing interesting in this match. If it weren't for Roddy Piper & Mr. T, this would be the worst match on the show by a mile.

    Here's a Smackdown main event where Goliath wins with one move and has a terrible Saudi match afterwards and David had any potential main event momentum flushed down the toilet and returned to smiling/clapping pretending nothing happened.

      Bad Bunny definitely one of the best. The only person who I think can give him a run for his money (as much it annoys me to admit it) is Logan Paul.

An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it.
