Worst in the World: Triple H vs Randy Orton-WrestleMania 25

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
The main event of WrestleMania is the one match above all else that the WWE should want to get right every year. After all, it's the finale to the company's biggest show of the year, they absolutely want to end their biggest show with the biggest bang possible. On top of that, having their marquee match get overshadowed by a better match earlier on the card really doesn't do them any favors, and it just makes that marquee match come off as less than. Last week, I looked at Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter, a bottom-five WrestleMania main event from WrestleMania VII, and one that was vastly outdone by the match between The Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage earlier in the show. This week, we'll take a look at another one of those overshadowed main events, that being the main event of WrestleMania 25 between WWE Champion Triple H and Randy Orton.
Storyline-wise, this was absolutely main event-worthy. Randy Orton was about to fired by Vince McMahon after Orton had verbally run down him & Stephanie. That was stopped by Orton, who attacked Vince and punted him in the head. A week later, Orton would win the Royal Rumble, securing him a spot at WrestleMania. Stating that he suffered from intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a behavioral disorder associated with outbursts of anger & violence, Orton threatened to sue the company if he was fired. As Orton's feud with the McMahons escalated, Triple H won the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out that year. Orton would then punt Shane McMahon in the head during a match on Raw, followed by giving Stephanie an RKO when she tried to check on him in the ring. This drew the ire of Triple H, with Triple H goading Orton to challenge him at WrestleMania, with Orton adding the stipulation that Triple H could not hit him prior to the match unless physically provoked. Orton and Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr.) would attack him on the following episode of SmackDown, which lead to the now-famous Raw moment where, during an interview via satellite, Triple H broke into Orton's home and attacked him. Orton would deliver the final blow in the lead-up when he handcuffed Triple H to the ropes, gave Stephanie a draping DDT, and kissed her. It was about as heated as it could get. And Triple H and Randy Orton are more than capable of having great matches, so it would take something big to take the attention away from this match...
Something big took away from the match. At the same time Orton and Triple H were developing their feud, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker were setting up a match at that same WrestleMania, with the Heartbreak Kid challenging the Taker's then 16-0 undefeated streak at the show in their first singles match since 1998. Booked as the seventh match on WrestleMania 25's nine-match card, Michaels and Taker tore the house down, earning a four and three-quarters star rating from Dave Meltzer, a 9.63 rating on Cagematch.net (the fifth highest in WWE history), and is regularly considered one of the greatest matches in the history of WrestleMania. Trying to follow a match like that is not an enviable task, and Triple H and Randy Orton had to take up that task. But even then, this is still a hotly-contested feud. Maybe it couldn't compare to Michaels vs Taker, but it would still be an entertaining, wild match...
That's what I would've said if WWE hadn't gone out of their way to kneecap the match before it had even started. In a promo on a final Raw before WrestleMania, Orton revealed in a promo that he had gotten SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero to add a stipulation to the match. That stipulation was that if Triple H got disqualified or counted out, Orton would win the title. All of a sudden, the definition of a grudge match with a ton of heat that could've been a brawl to end all brawls became a regular ass match, and one that actively avoided becoming anything else. Needless to say, the match suffered as a result. The match currently sits at a 3.71 rating on Cagematch.net, a rating that would be the worst of the night if it weren't on the same show as a horrific Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal. Dave Meltzer, on the other hand, gave the match a two-and-a-half star rating. The ratings are pretty similar to the Hulk Hogan-Sgt. Slaughter main event I covered last week, which is not a good sign. Let's take a look for ourselves.
The match starts with 20 seconds of Orton circling Triple H as he stands in the middle of the ring. Orton goes for the lock-up, only for Triple H to take him down to the mat with a double-leg takedown. Triple H punches away at Orton, beating him into the corner until the referee steps in. The intervention allows Orton to pop up and hit an RKO, but isn't able to get the pin. Orton sets up for the Punt Kick, but Triple H dodges it and hits the Pedigree, leaving both men down. We then get 35 seconds of the two just lying on the mat before they both roll out of the ring. Triple H strikes first, hitting Orton from behind before throwing him into the English announce table. Orton rolls back into the ring as Triple H steals one of Jim Ross' water bottles and pours it on himself.
What a dick.
Triple H gets back in the ring and punches Orton to the ground, where he beats him down. Orton rolls out of the ring, prompting Triple H to follow him. Orton tries to ram him into the ring post, but Triple H blocks it and throws Orton into the post. Orton retreats back into the ring, pleading for mercy when Triple H follows him in. Triple H responds by kicking him in the face. More ground and pound before Triple H slingshots him into the bottom rope. Triple drops the knee on the back of Orton's head three times, letting Orton get to his feet before knocking him back down with a forearm to the back. Triple H follows up with a neckbreaker, prompting Orton to roll back out of the ring. Triple H follows him out and tries to whip him into the ring steps, but Orton reverses and sends Triple H into the steps. Orton whips Triple H again, this time into the timekeeper's area. Orton slides back into the ring, opting for the countout win, but Triple H gets back in at 7. This is way too slow and plodding for a grudge match like this.
Orton stomps away at Triple H before dropping a knee on the back of the head. Orton follows up with a kick to the face for a two-count. Orton goes to the ground and pound, punching away at Triple H before putting on a headlock. Triple H quickly counters, however, and hits a back suplex. Orton keeps control, however, with a scoop slam for a two-count. Orton goes back to the headlock, causing Triple H to fade but stay in the match. Triple H fights to his feet, but Orton keeps control with punches. Orton punches Triple H into the corner. Triple H fires back, and the two trade blows until Triple H hits a high knee strike. Orton scurries into the corner, where Triple hits a clothesline followed by a facebreaker. Triple H goes for another Pedigree, but Orton blocks it, double-legging Triple H and slingshotting him into the corner. Triple H recovers, however, and hits a clothesline for a two-count. Triple H sets Orton on the top rope and goes for the superplex, but Orton slips down and drops Triple H face-first into the top turnbuckle.
Orton goes to the second rope for as blatant of a flying nothing as you can imagine, which Triple H blocks by getting a boot up.
Triple H tries for the Pedigree again, but Orton again counters with a double-leg takedown. This time, however, Orton flips over for the cover, but Triple H kicks out. Orton goes for the RKO, but Triple H blocks it and rolls him up for a two-count. Orton catches Triple H with a kick, but Triple H responds with a spinebuster. Pedigree attempt #4 is also blocked, with Orton slipping out and hitting his signature inverted backbreaker. Orton crawls into the cover, but Triple H kicks out. Triple H rolls out onto the apron, putting him right in place for the draping DDT. Triple H avoids it, elbowing Orton in the face before climbing to the top rope. It's here where Triple H tries to one-up Orton with his own blatant flying nothing, which Orton counters with a dropkick.
I hate the flying nothing so much
Orton sets up for the Punt Kick, but Triple H catches him and flips him out of the ring. Triple H follows him out and slams him into the Spanish announce table. Triple H takes apart the table, grabbing a monitor before preparing to hit Orton with it. Scott Armstrong steps in, however, and reminds Triple H that a disqualification costs him his title. Triple H obliges, tossing away the monitor before kicking Orton in the face. Triple H throws Orton onto the English announce table before climbing up himself. Triple H goes for the Pedigree it's blocked again, with Orton powering out and backdropping him onto the Spanish announce table, which doesn't break. Orton then drags Triple H off the table just enough to the draping DDT on the outside. Orton slides back into the ring as the referee starts to count Triple H out. Triple H stays down until 8, but manages to get back in the ring just in time to beat the count.
Orton stomps away at Triple H before dragging him to his feet and into the corner. Orton beats Triple H before stomping away at him in the corner. Triple H fires back with a punch, but Orton punches back, causing Triple H to stumble back into the referee Armstrong. Orton then throws Triple H back into Armstrong, taking him out of the match. Orton pounces and hits an RKO before rolling out of the ring. Orton goes under the ring and grabs Triple H's signature sledgehammer. As Orton gets in the ring, however, Triple H catches him with a Punt Kick of his own. With the referee still down, Triple H grabs the sledgehammer and clocks Orton with it, sliding it out of the ring. Triple H goes to the ground and pound before finally hitting a second Pedigree for the three and the win.

The Verdict

An unbelievably dull match, and one that didn't fit the storyline that preceded it. This does not feel like a match where one of the participants RKO'd his opponent's wife, and then that opponent broke into his house and threw him through a window. It's just so plodding and slow that there's just no fun to be had in it whatsoever. Maybe it would have been better if they had made it a No Disqualifications match and they were able to have a grudge match, but for what it is, it's just a bad, boring match.

  1. Yeah man having a singles match while following the epic Undertaker/HBK match was a horrible idea even HHH knew this match this match was doomed. if it was a Street Fight or Falls Count Anywhere the match likely would of been better and the crowd would of least likely made noise.

    1. Yeah, I didn't mention it in the post, but that crowd is pretty much dead the entire time.

  2. Here's an idea for a multi match post: The Spooky Year of Alexa Bliss (2021)
Alexa Bliss vs Asuka (Raw Jan 18)
Alexa Bliss vs Asuka (Raw Jan 25)
Alexa Bliss vs Randy Orton (Fastlane)
Alexa Bliss vs Shayna Baszler (Hell in a Cell)
Alexa Bliss vs Eva Marie (Summerslam)

It was a shame WWE tried to make Bliss into the new Fiend but they went overboard with the spooky and Bliss had to deal with some of the worst wrestling fans in the world who accused her of stealing the gimmick!

    1. I'll add them to the list. I like Alexa Bliss, but I feel like she got miscast in that gimmick. It didn't help that they definitely went overboard with the supernatural stuff like you said. Thanks for the suggestions!

    1. I had actually considered doing both the Mancow-Jimmy Hart matches (shocked they did two of them) a while back. Now that one of them has been requested, I'll add them to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
