Worst in the World: Booker T vs Buff Bagwell-Monday Night Raw (7/2/2001)

Hey everyone. Since this will be the last post before October, I wanted to announce that, like last year, I'll be going to a weekly schedule for October. Last year, I did "A Very WCW October", but this year, since it's the Halloween season, what better time of year to cover some matches that fit the Halloween spirit. These will be matches that either feature horror or horror-adjacent wrestlers, matches with horror-adjacent gimmicks, or matches set at Halloween-themed shows. I've had this planned out for a while, so I'm not gonna be doing the poll for this month, but that will resume for November. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy this edition of the Worst in the World.
On paper, Buff Bagwell seems like a guy who would've fit right in with the WWF. After he turned on his fellow American Male Scotty Riggs and joined the nWo, Marcus Bagwell would go from a pretty bland babyface to the incredibly vein and boastful Buff Bagwell. From there, Bagwell would cement himself as a staple of the WCW midcard up until the company closed in 2001. Even without a decorated resume (only a single tag title reign between 1996 and 2001), Bagwell stood out. Sure, he's by no means a great wrestler, and he's not gonna put on a must-see match, but the man was undeniably charismatic and had a great look. Like I said, if there was anywhere someone with tons of charisma and a great look would thrive, at the very least in the midcard, it would be in the WWF. And if Vince McMahon's gauging of opinion on the first Raw after the WWF bought WCW was anything to go by, the WWF audience was interested in Bagwell in the WWF. Again, this should've worked. But, as you probably know, nothing about Buff Bagwell in the WWF worked.
Bagwell would join the WWF following the purchase of WCW, agreeing to a buyout of his AOL Time Warner contract. He'd work a single house show match on July 1st before making his first televised appearance for the company on the July 2nd episode of Monday Night Raw. By the next episode of Raw, he'd be released from the company. How did it go so wrong so fast? Well, things got off on the wrong foot almost immediately, when Bagwell was involved in an altercation with fellow ex-WCW wrestler Shane Helms, during which Helms hit Bagwell with a water bottle (whether it was frozen or not depends on who's telling the story.) There have also been allegations that Bagwell had faked an injury following a powerbomb from the APA, and had even had his mother Judy call the WWF and request time off for the injuries & complain about his travel arrangements, the latter of which Bagwell has denied. And then, of course, there's this match; Buff Bagwell's one and only televised WWF match, where he challenged Booker T in the main event of that July 2nd Raw for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
This match, the first of future "WCW matches" in the WWF at the start of the Invasion angle, was seemingly to see if a separate WCW brand was viable within the WWF. Any plans of that flew right out the window with this match, which was soundly rejected by the fans and journalists. Another person who hated this match was Vince McMahon himself, and aside from a few matches on the following SmackDown, solely WCW matches, and a WCW-centered brand, would be no more, and we'd instead get the WWF vs WCW/ECW alliance. Let's take a look at this infamous match.
Before the match, Jim Ross & Paul Heyman sign off as the show officially changes to WCW, complete with the logo projected onto the ramp & mat, WCW logos on the TitanTron, announce table, and ring apron, and even the little WWF chyron in the bottom left corner changing to WCW.
WCW owner Shane McMahon comes down to the ring, a WCW nameplate popping up on the screen. Shane brings out his commentators, former WCW commentator Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson, and the ring announcer, Stacy Keibler. Stacy announces that the referee for the match will be former WCW referee Nick Patrick. She is interrupted, however, by WWF Commissioner William Regal and his assistant Tajiri. Regal says that, while WCW is entitled to a match tonight, Shane doesn't have to be involved, so he has security escort him out of the building, specifically "to his car and to his hotel." Shane doesn't protest, instead saying that he doesn't need the spotlight like his father, and that tonight, and promotion, will always be about the WCW superstars. Security then escorts Shane to the back.
Booker T's out first, and while he is both World Heavyweight & United States champion, and his nameplate even says so, he only comes out with the World Heavyweight title. Bagwell comes out next. Bagwell takes a cheap shot on Booker, punching away at him as he hands the bell to Patrick. The bell rings as Bagwell continues laying into Booker with punches & kicks. Booker blocks a punch and fires back, but Bagwell keeps control with an eye rake. Booker reverses an Irish whip and goes for a clothesline, but Bagwell ducks it and hits a double-arm DDT, which gets a two count. The crowd is already getting antsy, which is a little harsh considering the match started about 25 seconds ago. Bagwell makes another cover, but Booker kicks out again and gets to his feet. Bagwell punches Booker in the corner before whipping him into the opposite corner. Bagwell charges at him, but Booker catches him with a boot before hitting a spinning heel kick.
Booker follows up with a back elbow for a two-count, but Bagwell regains by flapjacking Booker onto the top rope. Bagwell follows up with a swinging neckbreaker before choking Booker against the mat. Bagwell lays into Booker with punches as the crowd starts loudly chanting "BORING." Again, I don't know if that's really justified. This has been a pretty mediocre match, but it's not boring, there's still action. I might be in the minority on this, but based on how quickly this crowd turned on the match, they weren't gonna be down for this regardless of what actually happened in the match.
Bagwell follows up with a suplex for a two count before slapping on a chinlock. Booker fights to his feet, but Bagwell quickly throws him back down to the mat. Bagwell goes back to the chin lock before switching to a seated surfboard stretch. Booker again fights to his feet and, after fending off Bagwell fires back with punches before hitting a dropkick. Both men are down, but Bagwell gets to his feet first and quickly kicks Booker in the ribs. He then loudly yells at the crowd to shut up. Bagwell chokes Booker against the ropes before trying to toss him across the ring. Booker reverses it, however, and hits a jumping leg lariat. Booker runs wild, clotheslining Bagwell twice. Bagwell ducks a third clothesline, but Booker keeps control with a forearm for a two-count. Booker follows up with a Scissor Kick and a Spinarooni before calling for the Book End (an Uranage.)
However, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kurt Angle run down to the ring and attack Booker, beating him down. The nWo might be 4 Life, but WCW is not, as Bagwell joins in on the beatdown. The three men drag Booker to the back, punching & stomping away at him the entire time. The segment ends there, but there's one other part of this story I didn't want to leave out. Following a backstage segment between Vince McMahon, Torrie Wilson, and Linda McMahon, we cut back to Austin, Angle, and Bagwell beating down Booker. Austin tosses Booker into a podium and a wall before throwing him out the door. Bagwell celebrates, only for Austin & Angle to quickly turn on him, beating him down and tossing him out with Booker. Outside of being a background character in a backstage beatdown on the following SmackDown, this is the last we see of Buff Bagwell in the WWF.

The Verdict

How bad this match actually is is definitely blown out of proportion. I'm not saying this is all that good of a match or one that you should go out of your way to watch, and it's definitely not main-event caliber, but it's just kind of unremarkable. If it weren't for the crowd pretty immediately voicing their displeasure for the match, then it probably would've just been another match the WWF did. The only part of the match I thought was all that boring was when Bagwell was putting on rest holds, but the crowd was chanting "BORING" well before that. I'm probably in the minority on this, but to me, this match is just not that bad.

  1. I remember attending a local event in the mid 2000s and they announced Buff was going to be in the main attraction on the next show and some guy in the crowd yelled “Irrelevant since ‘97!” I still have his autograph from the show, he was cool with the fans. They booked him to defeat the champion clean in the main event but the company did a bait and switch move and announced their title could only change hands in 2 of 3 falls matches even though they announced his match would be for the title on the last show.

Anyway, two recommendations I would like to make. A couple of matches that turned into shoots.

Koji Kitao vs Earthquake WWF/SWS Supershow - April 1, 1991
The Acolytes vs Public Enemy - Sunday Night Heat - March 7, 1999 (a potential red light candidate)

    1. The Kitao/Earthquake match has been requested already, but I believe the Acolytes/Public Enemy one is new. I'll add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. Here's a multi match idea from AEW All Out 2022 a ppv that was riddled with to many matches while most were good it did have an uninspiring kickoff, a tepid TBS title match where not even Athena could save, matches from two hot rivalries being short, a ladder match having a weird ending and the massive media scrum between CM Punk/Ace Steel vs The Elite!

Sammy Guevera/Tay Melo vs Ortiz/Ruby Soho (pre show)
Hook vs Angelo Parker (pre show)
PAC vs Kip Sabian (pre show)
    The Casino Ladder Match
    Jade Cargill vs Athena
    Powerhouse Hobbs vs Ricky Starks
    Christian Cage vs Jungle Boy

    1. I'll add it to the list. Since that was on one of the weekly pay-per-views and I've got two other posts looking at matches from early TNA weekly pay-per-views (one for 1-5, and one for 6-10) so I might lump that in with other ones from 11-15.
Also, I knew Screech had done this match and Hogan's celebrity wrestling show, but I wasn't aware he'd actually wrestled a few matches in the early 2010, and even on for relatively prominent indy promotion like AAW.
      Thanks for the suggestion!

  8. Okay, there's an absolute GEM of bad wrestling you have to see.

There was a promotion called the Confederate Wrestling Alliance that held one pay-per-view, and that pay-per-view only had one match. It was a "Football Rules" match with a strange scoring system, between two teams of six. It was designed to start a new wrestling career for Dominic Menaldi, an ex-security guard/bodybuilder/owner of a literal castle in Huntingdon Beach where he held Halloween haunts every year. They put him in with 11 local guys, including names you might recognise (John Hawk a.k.a. Bradshaw, Scott Putski, and top champion Firebreaker Chip). Menaldi got knocked out legit mid-match, and decided being a wrestler hurt too much so he never had a second match.

This is an AMAZING curiosity and I will be sad if it never makes it to this list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGUo5XpkrAo

    1. Oh yes! I watched that video last night and I definitely agree! Not only because of the match, but also the ridiculous music videos played such as “Alcatraz Rock” and “Bodyguard Slam”. That and presenting the show as recommended for adults only at the beginning when it was nothing but old school 80’s rasslin’ and no blood or excess violence happened. That’s a great find Anonymous!

  9. Here's a match where two great wrestlers that look like it should of been a great match on paper but was riddled with botches, awkward stalling and dissapointment

    1. I'll add it to the list. It pains me to say it, but it seems like age & wear and tear have finally caught up to Tanahashi. He's still good, but he's not at his 2010s level anymore.

  11. Here's another stinker from WCW The Great American Bash 1991 which basically shows why Jim Herd was a bad choice to lead WCW! It's bad when the world title match being changed of the fly because Herd stupidly fired Ric Flair two weeks before the show for not changing into a roman gladiator, taking a pay cut and refusing to lose the belt to Lex Luger since he was promised he'd lose the belt to Sting and what's funny is the world title match wasn't even the main event it was just a random tag team match it's a wonder why Herd was shown the door afterwards.

    Diamond Studd vs Z Man
    Ron Simmons vs Oz
    Richard Morton vs Robert Gibson
Dustin Rhodes/Young Pistols vs Fabulous Freebirds
The Yellow Dog vs Johnny B Badd
    Big Josh vs Black Blood

  12. Here's a match where WWE tried to copy-paste the Alliance to End Hulkamania (minus the cages) by pitting over twice the amount of opponents against Monday Night RAW's Mega-Powers of 2008. It resulted in cementing who was going to be stuck in mid-card purgatory for life and the top two credible guys out of the 17 were no longer employed with the company after the following year's WrestleMania. Oh, and HHH got to stand tall at the end of this match as well since he was facing off against the guys at the disadvantage at the biggest show of the year.

  16. Based on this entry, I think you should cover matches with this exact same reputation, matches thay, in spite of having mediocre action and boring pacing, it's main issue is the crowd hostility that buries the entire match Regardless of what the wrestlers did, some good examples of this are Sheamus vs Randy Orton in the Raw after WM29 and Roman Reigns vs Samoa Joe in Backlash 2018.

    1. I like that idea. I kind of had a match like that on the list I added myself (Orton vs Cena at the 2014 Royal Rumble) so I'll definitely add that Sheamus/Orton match and Reigns vs Joe. Thanks for the suggestions!

  18. Robbie E and Cookie vs. Jay Lethal and Taylor Wilde on Impact in 2010... two of the trademarks of TNA - the X Division and the Knockouts - buried by comedy badness. Taylor Wilde left Impact and retired after this match, she did not get to do one move. This was also, apparently, a second take! There's footage of a worse version of this match.

Speaking of bad things to happen to the Knockouts, a retrospective of the 3 Rosie Lottalove matches (one on Impact, one on Xplosion, and one on only the international version of Impact for some reason) is long overdue.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
