Worst in the World: The Electrified Steel Cage Match-TNA Lockdown 2007

All the way back in 2016, and for just the 11th entry in the Worst in the World, I covered the infamous Blindfold Steel Cage Match between James Storm and Chris Harris at TNA's Lockdown 2007. In that post, I teased that there was yet another insane cage match variant TNA busted out at Lockdown. And now, almost eight years later, it is finally time to look at that other crazy gimmick. It's finally time to talk about the infamous Electrified Steel Cage match between Team 3D (The Dudley Boyz) and the Latin American XChange for the NWA World Tag Team Championships.
Homicide & Hernadez, with Konnan as their manager, formed in LAX the previous year, citing discrimination against Latino wrestlers. LAX have been on the run of their careers for the past year, winning the NWA World Tag Team titles twice and coming out on top in feuds with AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels and America's Most Wanted. Their next feud would be with Brother Ray and Brother Devon of Team 3D, after Hernandez gave their kayfabe brother Brother Runt (Spike Dudley) a Border Toss (a Crucifix Powerbomb) into a ladder during a Street Fight with Homicide. LAX & Team 3D would face off in various multi-man and street fight tag matches before this challenge was laid out, with Team 3D putting their legacy on the line to finally gain the NWA Tag Team titles. On paper, this match doesn't seem bad. Both teams are solid, and while they're probably not going to put on a technical masterclass, it could've been a fun match. But I guess TNA just couldn't stop at one bad cage gimmick for Lockdown.
LAX accepted the challenge, as long as it was an Electrified Cage match. For the match, the cage walls would be electrified to the touch. The "electricity" angle is meant to mimic the United States-Mexico border. While the match didn't get nearly as bad reviews as the Blindfold Cage match on the same show, it still was not well received. Dave Meltzer gave the match a single-star rating, while Cagematch.net currently has it sitting at a 3.12 out of 10. It's been almost eight years in the making, but let's take a look.
Team 3D is out first, quite literally carrying their legacy to the ring, as they have their WWF, WCW, and ECW Tag Team Championships on them.
Considering that WWE threatened legal action against TNA if they showed the ECW Heavyweight title when Rhyno burned a bag in 2006, I do not know how they got away with this a year later. Brother Ray just hucks the titles over the cage wall and into the ring, except for one that comes up short.
LAX is out next, without Konnan by their side (Konnan was recovering from hip & kidney surgery at the time.) Jeremy Borash does the ring announcing before the electricity is "plugged in." This causes the arena's light to flicker.
It will always be funny seeing wrestling companies try to pull off special effects with nowhere near enough resources to do it convincingly. Mike Tenay on commentary then says that the "electric current" will "alternate" throughout the match. I get the feeling this was said to excuse anytime someone touches the cage and doesn't get shocked.
Team 3D wastes no time rushing LAX, beating them down to the mat. Brother Ray Irish whips Homicide into the corner, followed by Brother Devon doing the same to Hernandez into the same corner. Devon then Irish whips Ray into the corner for a splash before hitting a corner avalanche himself. Team 3D double Irish whips Hernandez into the opposite corner hard before Ray blocks a kick from Hernandez, quickly following up with a big German suplex. Team 3D follows up with a double suplex on Hernandez, sending him crashing into the cage wall and...not...being shocked.
Don West tries to explain it away by saying the door, which Hernandez mostly hit, isn't electrified, but I don't think that was ever stated before this. Also, he 100% hits some part of the actual cage with his leg.
Team 3D follows up with another double team on Homicide, with Devon hitting an inverted atomic drop and holding him in place for a big boot from Ray. Team 3D continues beating down LAX, but Homicide is able to turn the tables on Ray. Homicide tries to make Ray touch the cage with his hand, but Ray stays unshocked. Homicide goes for an Irish whip, but Ray counters it and goes for a backbody drop. Homicide blocks it and goes for a suplex, but Ray blocks it and hits a body slam. Devon climbs to the top rope for the WAAASUUUUUUUUUP diving headbutt, during which Tenay says he grazed the cage wall with his back. He did not sell that.
Hernandez has no time for pop culture references, however, as he runs over and tosses Devon down to the mat. Hernandez follows up with a forearm to Ray, allowing Homicide to catch him with a single-leg dropkick. Homicide tries to get Ray to touch the cage again, while Devon reverses an Irish whip and sends Hernandez into the corner. Hernandez catches Devon with a big boot and a forearm when he charges in, while Ray avoids the cage by biting Homicide's arm. LAX keeps control, beating down Team 3D. It's here we see Hernandez has a chain in his hand. Ray turns the tables on Homicide when he grabs his hand and forces it onto the cage wall. The lights don't flicker, but Homicide does sell it.
We will get much sillier displays of shocking soon, just trust me.
Hernandez quickly takes the fight to Ray, choking Ray as Homicide beats down Devon. LAX double-team Devon in the corner. At some point, Hernandez must've dropped the chain, because now Ray has it and uses it on LAX. Devon also got busted open at some point. Homicide cuts off Ray's comeback with an enziguri before booting Devon in the face. LAX goes back to the double team, with Hernandez hitting an inverted atomic drop as Homicide goes to the second rope for a knee drop to the back of the head. LAX keep control, hitting a double back body drop on Ray before Hernandez holds Devon in place. Homicide kicks him before Hernandez follows up with a wheelbarrow facebuster.
Hernandez follows up with a bodyslam on Ray before both members of LAX climb to the top rope. Team 3D spring to life, knocking LAX down and crouching them both on the top rope. Team 3D hit dual superplexes, leaving all four men down. Homicide is the first man up and Irish whips Devon into the ropes. Homicide goes for a clothesline, but Devon ducks it and hits a jumping clothesline of his own. Meanwhile, Ray hits a DDT on Hernandez. Devon follows up with a headbutt and a scoop slam off an Irish whip before making the first pin of the match. Homicide kicks out at two.
Konnan, in a wheelchair and with a steel chair, gets wheeled down the entrance ramp by, as Mike Tenay calls him, a member of the Latino Nation. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is Machete, who was brought into LAX back in 2006 after original member Apolo left TNA. He'd been kicked from the group before just...coming back. Off that DDT from earlier, I think, Ray covers Hernandez for a two-count. At the same time, Machete(?) attacks an outside referee and steals his key & protective gloves. Machete(?) gives Konnan the gloves, only for Hector Guerrero, the Spanish, but anti-LAX commentator, runs over and takes out Machete. Guerrero steals the chair from Konnan and the key from Machete(?).
Guerrero unlocks the door and goes to hand the chair to Ray, but Ray loudly & clearly yells for him to "GIVE ME THE FUCKING TABLE!" Guerrero obliges, pulling a table from under the ring and sliding it into the ring. The chaos, however, allows Hernandez to recover and take out both members of Team 3D. Hernandez lambasts Guerrero, only for Guerrero to slam the door on him. Team 3D capitalizes with a back suplex/neckbreaker combo for the cover, but Hernandez kicks out. Homicide takes out Ray with a dropkick to the shin before hitting a swinging neckbreaker on Devon for a two count. Homicide tries to follow up with a clothesline on Ray, but Ray catches him with the full nelson bomb. Another cover, but Homicide kicks out.
Hernandez lifts Ray with ease for a Samoan Drop and makes the cover, but Ray kicks out. Devon tries to Irish whip Hernandez into the cage wall, but Hernandez reverses it and hits a body slam. As he does, Homicide climbs to the top rope to follow up with a diving elbow for a two count. Homicide goes for a dropkick on Ray, but Ray dodges, causing Hernandez to take the kick. Ray follows up with a falling Powerbomb and makes the cover, but Homicide kicks out. Hernandez then catches him with a stiff clothesline and makes the cover, but Ray kicks out. Devon goes for another Irish whip, but Hernandez counters and gets Devon up for the Border Toss. Hernandez tosses Devon into the cage wall, and we finally get TNA's attempt at showing electrocution.
Devon hits the cage, the lights flicker, and "electricshock.mp4" plays over the speakers as Devon flails around. Hilarious. Your local high school's production of Wicked has effects that look & sound exactly like this. The crowd is not thrilled with this either, loudly booing.
Hernandez crawls to the corner, putting him in position for a corner splash from Ray. Ray goes to the second rope for an elbow drop, which gets a two count. During this, we get some very clear "FIRE RUSSO!" chants. Homicide goes for an Irish whip on Ray, but Ray reverses it and sends him to the corner. Homicide keeps control, however, by leaping off the second rope with a crossbody. Ray stumbles into the corner, where Homicide catches him with a forearm before going for another Irish whip. The same thing plays out, only this time Ray prevents a crossbody with a chop. Ray picks Homicide up in an electric chair as Devon climbs to the top rope. Team 3D hits the Deadly Device (the Doomsday Device) and Devon makes the cover, but Homicide kicks out.
Hernandez quickly plants both members of Team 3D with Spinebusters before setting up the table. Hernandez sets Devon on the table before pulling out rubber gloves. His hands protected, Hernandez climbs the cage and scales to the corner. Hernandez dives off the top, but Devon moves and Hernandez crashes through the table. Homicide goes to the top rope and takes out Ray with a hurricanrana before Devon hits an Irish whip. Homicide ducks a clothesline and a back elbow, but Devon gets the upper hand by alley-ooping Homicide into the cage wall.
The lights flicker and electric sounds play again as Homicide clings to the wall. Presumably, the finish was supposed to be Homicide falling from the cage right into a 3D, but his momentum is too much and Devon falls trying to catch him.
Ray quickly picks Homicide up, and Team 3D hit their titular move for the three, and the win, to win the NWA Tag Team titles.

The Verdict

It's significantly better than the Blindfold Steel Cage match, but honestly, this is kind of a mixed bag. The beginning is pretty bland. There are a couple of moves, but it drags at times. It picks up towards the end, but that's also when all the shocking shenanigans start. I don't think it's as bad as its reputation, but overall, this was pretty mid.

  1. Besides an epic Elimination Chamber Match for the World Heavyweight Title, New Years Rvolution 2005 was a pretty bad show riddled with injuries that ruin the matches, an IC title match that was more of a punchline then a match , a pointless Jerry Lawler match and a bad match in the rivalry between Kane/Snitsky

    Eugene/William Regal vs Christian/Tyson Tomko
    Trish Stratus vs Lita
    Shelton Benjamin vs Maven
    Muhhamad Hassan vs Jerry Lawler
    Kane vs Gene Snitsky

  2. I may be wrong on this, but I believe the reason TNA were allowed to show the WWE,WCW and ECW belts here but Rhyno wasn’t is that this A: wasn’t being used to promote the show and B: wasn’t considered disrespectful or disparaging, whereas the belt burning angle would have been heavily promoted and certainly disrespectful.

  3. I have a few suggestions:

Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler - Raw, march 13, 1995. Honestly, it's not even that bad at all, it's a decent brawl with Bret getting screwed up and Lawler winning by count out, only to get attacked by Bret a few minutes later, I only suggest it because it's one of the only few moments of Bull Nakano in WWF where she isn't wrestling Alundra Blayze in the women's division.

Chigusa Nagayo vs Miyuki Maeda - GAEA Limit Break 2001. According to some Joshi fans, this is one of the worst GAEA matches ever, featuring one of the aces of AJW of the 80s in her later phase against a very green rookie.

And talking about GAEA and joshi, Nicole Bass wrestled 3 nights in a row on NEO Ladies Neo Stage 1998 Korakuen Hall 3 Nights (a tournament made from a 3 nights event, courtesy of the not so well known joshi company NEO).

    1. I'll add these to the list. I haven't seen much of GAEA outside of the GAEA Girls documentary, so those matches would be an interesting venture.

  6. Considering you already talked (albeit briefly) about the disaster that was Batista vs Big Show in a ECW show, it would be interesting to cover the entire match and analyze how the ECW crowd pretty much sabotaged the struggle by showing complete rejection and apathy for it.

  7. I got a suggestion:

Two matches from Over The Limit 2010:
Big Show vs Jack Swagger for the World Heavyweight Championship
    Randy Orton vs Edge

While they aren't really that bad, the fact that both matches had anticlimatic endings made them feel like DUDs

  9. The recent NWA Samhain, aside from including a segment that killed a possible NWA TV deal, produced some poor matches.

The Devil's Last Dance 10-Person Tag
    Brady Pierce vs. Rush Freeman
The Southern 6 vs. The Headbangers
    Jax Dane vs. Blake Troop
Violent J/Brothers of Funstruction vs. Vampiro/La Rebelion

  10. War Games is right around the corner. 1995 is widely agreed upon as wrestling’s worst year financially and creatively. That year’s War Games was no exception, with Hulk Hogan’s overstacked team of Sting, Randy Savage and Lex Luger dispatching the Dungeon of Doom. Hulk flushed down the group’s credibility by making the Zodiac submit to a chinlock! Likely the worst War Games match pre-nWo years.

  13. Bragging Rights 2010 was pretty bad with the buried alive match you covered , pointless filler matches, booking that further diminishes the Nexus' momentum and a bad main event which not only ends with a crap finish but it's main stipulation ends up being pointless as John Cena kept coming back.

David Otunga/John Cena vs Drew McIntyre/Cody Rhodes
    Ted Dibiase Jr vs Goldust
    Layla vs Natalya
    Wade Barrett vs Randy Orton

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
