Worst in the World: John Cena vs The Miz: A Feud That Never Worked

While it was happening, a frequent topic of discussion in the Internet wrestling community was WWE's frequent booking of John Cena vs Randy Orton. Whether it be their first initial pay-per-view trilogy in 2007 and 2008, their lengthy feud in 2009, or their 2013-14 pair of matches, WWE would go back to Orton-Cena well so often it became a running joke online. It definitely felt like the company wanted so badly to have a long-running feud between the two biggest homegrown stars of the era, not unlike what they had with Steve Austin and The Rock in the 90s and early 2000s. Hell, they even did the exact same "lock eyes in opposite corners during the Royal Rumble" spot 10 years after Austin and Rock did it. But for all the criticism that repetitive booking got, the silver lining was that the two could (with some exceptions) put on solid matches together. The same can't be said for another frequent feud Cena had with another homegrown wrestler, that being The Miz.
It's really not surprising why WWE thinks so highly of The Miz. Undeniably charismatic and fantastic at playing a heel, he's also someone who is more than competent in the ring. Sure, he's not someone who's gonna put on the match of the night every night, but given the right opponent, he can hold his own. If there was anyone that came out of WWE's developmental that could play the foil to their Superman in Cena, it would be The Miz. As such, WWE has tried out a Cena-Miz feud three separate times. Unlike Cena vs Orton, however, these are not matches you'd want to see.
Outside of their three-way Steel Cage match with John Morrison at Extreme Rules 2011, none of the matches between Cena and The Miz were well received. In this entry in the series, I'll be taking a look at all of their bad pay-per-view matches. Some of these have been requested, some haven't, but they're all bad. And, unlike with The Undertaker vs Kane post, this entry will include non-singles matches. Granted, all but one of these are singles matches, but there's one tag match I felt I had to include. So, let's take a look.

Match #1: The Bash

Our first match we'll be taking a look at is probably the one you remember the least, that being from The Bash in 2009. The Bash was the sixth and (until being brought back in 2020 for NXT) final edition of The Great American Bash for WWE, only now with an infinitely more generic name. Seriously, they might as well have just called this "A Pay-Per-View." Outside of the excellent Title vs Mask match between Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio, The Bash as a whole is pretty forgettable. It was at The Bash that we'd get the first pay-per-view match-up between Cena and The Miz.
The Miz had just split from John Morrison following the draft when he was instantly put into a feud with Cena (who was also feuding with The Big Show at the time.) The night after Cena was chokeslammed into a stage light by Big Show, Miz challenged Cena to a match. As Cena was selling his injuries, the challenge would go unanswered and Miz would claim a forfeit victory. This continued for months before, after he finished his feud with Big Show, Cena & Miz would be set to face off at The Bash. The penultimate match on the card, it earned a DUD (zero stars) rating from Dave Meltzer, and while it doesn't have enough votes for an average rating on Cagematch, it does have a majority of 0/10 ratings (2 out of 3.) Let's take a look.
The Miz is out first in full Anti-Cena apparel, even sporting a "Miz 8, Cena 0" arm sleeve for all his "forfeit" wins over Cena.
The match starts with a lock-up, which Cena easily gets the better of. Cena pulls Miz to the ground before sitting on his knee. Another lock-up sees Cena take down Miz again, this time with a double leg before dropping an elbow on the opposite knee. Miz goes for a third lock-up, only for Cena to duck it and slap on a wrist lock. Cena whips Miz to the ground before stomping his arm. Miz gets back to his feet and goes for a clothesline, but Cena ducks it and takes Miz down with a headlock takeover. Jesus, who did Miz piss off in 2009? He is getting packed & smoked by Cena.
Miz is able to get to his feet and power out of the headlock, but Cena knocks him back down with a shoulder block. Cena hits the ropes and Miz tries to leapfrog over him, but Cena grabs the ropes before taking Miz back down with a headlock takeover. Miz is able to fight to his feet again, this time getting to the corner to break the hold. Miz mounts his first bit of offense in this match when he locks in a headlock, but Cena quickly powers out. After a drop down and a leapfrog, Cena hits a hip toss. Cena whips Miz to the ropes and goes for a back body drop, but Miz catches him with a kick. Cena isn't even fazed, simply shaking his head at Miz. He basically pulled an Omni-Man.
Miz retreats, sliding out of the ring. Cena follows him out and chases him around ringside. Miz slides back in the ring and lands some blows when Cena slides in after him, but Cena completely no sells them and scoops Miz up. Miz slips out onto the apron and yanks Cena's head down onto the top rope, the first bit of offense Cena actually sells. Miz takes over, stomping Cena before beating him down in the corner. Miz follows up with his corner clothesline before going to the top rope. Miz hits a diving double axe handle for a two count before hitting a big boot & a suplex for another two count.
Miz lays into Cena with punches and kicks before whipping him into the corner. Cena hits the corner chest first, and Miz follows up with a clothesline for another two count. Miz knees Cena in the back before dropkicking him out of the ring. Miz quickly throws Cena back in the ring and makes the cover, but Cena kicks out at two. Cena fights back with punches before going for an Irish whip. Miz reverses it, but Cena fires back with the shoulder block. Cena fires up the remaining Moves of Doom, following up with another shoulder block before hitting a spin-out powerbomb and the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena follows up with the Attitude Adjustment before locking in the STF. Miz taps out and Cena wins.

The Verdict

The actual wrestling isn't bad, but this match is just kind of pointless. Cena pretty much steamrolls Miz with only a bit of resistance. I get that it's prime "Super Cena" times and there was no way Miz was gonna win this, but having him get crushed in five minutes does nothing for either man, and only really hurts The Miz. It's an obscure match for a reason...

Match #2: WrestleMania XXVII

With the forgotten one out of the way, it's time for the big boys. In the nearly two years following The Bash, The Miz would ascend up the card to the main event, winning Money in the Bank before cashing in on Randy Orton to win the WWE Championship. He'd come out on top of feuds with Orton and Jerry Lawler (for some reason) before moving on to his second feud with John Cena. Following the Anonymous Raw General Manager pairing them up to win the Tag Team Championships from The Corre's Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater, Miz would turn on Cena in the immediate rematch literally nine minutes later to cost them the titles. It was so unbelievably pointless. The two were set to face off in the main event of WrestleMania XXVII, easily the biggest match of Miz's career. However, if there's one way to describe Miz's presence in this main event, it's "overshadowed."
That's because WrestleMania XXVII was hosted by The Rock, who was making his return to the WWE for the first time in seven years. This return went beyond just hosting WrestleMania, as he'd trade barbs with Cena. The two would fend off an attack from Miz and his lackey Alex Riley, only for Cena to hit Rock with an Attitude Adjustment. It was clear that WWE was setting the stage for Cena and Rock's "Once* in a Lifetime" match-up a year in advance for WrestleMania XXVIII, but it also led to Miz, the WWE CHAMPION, feeling like a third wheel going into the biggest show of the year.
But let's take away that third wheeling, how is the actual match? Not good. With a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Meltzer and a 2.69 on Cagematch, this match finds its way into the conversation of the worst WrestleMania main events of all-time. Let's take a look for ourselves.
Both men have special entrances for this match. The Miz gets, without hyperbole, one of the greatest pre-match promo videos of all time, scored with Nas' "Hate Me Now." This is followed by Miz and Alex Riley emerging from behind a giant inflatable "AWESOME!"
John Cena also gets a promo video before a gospel choir preludes his entrance.
The match starts with the two circling the ring. The two lock up and Miz gets the advantage, slapping on a headlock. Cena quickly escapes with a back suplex, and after a brief pause, the two lock up again. Miz goes back to the headlock, but Cena powers out again and sends Miz towards the ropes. Miz keeps control with a shoulder block, knocking Cena down, but after a drop down and a leapfrog, Cena takes Miz down with a hip toss.
We get another pause before the two lock hands. Cena takes control with a headlock, but Miz forces him into the corner to break the hold. Referee Mike Chioda counts to force the break, allowing Miz to get a cheap shot on Cena. Miz stomps away at Cena before whipping him to the opposite corner. Cena hits the corner hard before Miz follows up with his corner clothesline for a two-count. Miz lays into Cena with punches, only for Cena to spring to life and hit Miz with a gutwrench suplex. Cena crawls into a delayed cover, allowing Miz to kick out at two.
Miz fires back with a sitout side slam (the Side Effect) for a two count. Cena crawls back into the corner and Miz goes for the corner clothesline again, but Cena dodges and Miz crashes into the corner. Cena climbs to the top rope and hits the diving leg drop to the back of Miz's head and makes the cover, but Miz kicks out. Miz retreats into the corner and Cena charges at him, but Miz dodges and Cena crashes into the corner. Miz follows up with a running boot for a two count before hitting a big boot for another two count. Miz lays into Cena with punches & kicks before whipping him to the ropes. Miz drops down and Cena tries to hop over him, but the timing is off and Cena trips and eats shit.
Miz follows up with a low dropkick, booting Cena under the ropes and out of the ring. Miz follows him out and drapes Cena across the apron, putting him in position for a knee lift. Miz quickly covers Cena for a two count. Miz tries to follow up with a Skull Crushing Finale, but Cena slips out. Cena ducks a clothesline and starts the Five Moves of Doom. Shoulder block, shoulder block, spin-out powerbomb, Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena tries to complete the quinfecta (I think that's a word) with the Attitude Adjustment, but Miz slips out, kicks him in the gut, and hits the kneeling DDT for the cover, but Cena kicks out.
After a brief pause, Cena tries to surprise Miz by locking in the STF, but Miz blocks it. Miz follows up with the backbreaker into a neckbreaker combo for a two count. Alex Riley distracts the referee Chioda while Miz takes off one of the turnbuckle pads. Chioda catches Miz and puts the pad back on. At the same time, Cena rolls up Miz. Cena gets the visual three, but Chioda doesn't realize in time, allowing Miz to kick out before he counts three.
Miz catches Cena with a knee to the gut and tries to ram his head into the exposed turnbuckle, but Cena blocks it and elbows Miz in the face. Cena catches Miz with a follow-up punch and goes for the AA, but Miz grabs the ropes to block it. Miz goes for a clothesline, but Cena ducks it and locks in the STF. Miz struggles, but gets to the bottom rope to break the hold. Chioda checks on Miz, allowing Riley to grab Cena from the apron and slam his head into the exposed turnbuckle. Miz capitalizes, hitting the Skull Crushing Finale. Miz makes the cover, but Cena kicks out.
Miz sets up for the Skull Crushing Finale again, but Cena blocks it, whipping Miz into Chioda and knocking him down. Cena quickly hits the AA and makes the cover, again getting the visual three, but Chioda stays down. With the ref down, Riley slides into the ring with his steel briefcase. Riley hits Cena in the head and Miz makes the cover. Chioda comes too and counts the pin, but Cena kicks out at two. Riley distracts Chioda as Miz grabs the briefcase. Miz tries to hit Cena, but Cena ducks it and Miz hits Riley, knocking him off the apron. Cena follows up with a huge AA and makes the cover, but Miz kicks out.
Miz rolls out of the ring and leans against the barricade. Cena follows him and, after a three-point stance, clotheslines Miz over the barricade and into the timekeeper's area. Miz ends up climbing onto the barricade in the timekeeper's area, leading to the most infamous spot from this match.
Cena charges at him Miz again, tackling him over the barricade. Both men fall back onto the cement, and Miz's head hits the ground hard. Miz ends up suffering a concussion from this spot and it's very evident for the remainder of this match. The Miz has gone on record about how he doesn't remember a lot of this match because of this concussion, which is really sad. The spot is actually so gnarly that it's been edited out of the version WWE uploaded on YouTube.
With both men down, Chioda counts them out. The bell rings and Justin Roberts announces the match as a draw, with Miz retaining the title. Suddenly, The Rock's music hits. The Rock storms down to the ring. He is interrupted, however, by the Anonymous Raw GM. The Rock walks over to the GM's laptop at ringside and begins to read the email, only to toss it down and announce himself that WrestleMania isn't over, even though in shoot, it absolutely should be over. The Rock restarts the match, now with no disqualifications or countouts. The Miz has crawled back to ringside already, allowing Cena to toss him back in the ring.
Cena goes for the AA, but Miz grabs the ropes and slips out onto the apron. As he does, The Rock slides into the ring. Cena turns around, right into a Rock Bottom. The Miz slowly crawls into the cover and Mike Chioda counts the three, giving Miz the win to retain his title. As I said, you can tell Miz is in rough shape after that spot just by looking at him.
The night's still not over, however, as The Rock runs back into the ring. Miz tries to hit Rock with the title, but Rock ducks it. In a moment that's alarming given Miz's injury, The Rock tees off on Miz with punches before hitting a Spinebuster. With Miz in position, The Rock hits the People's Elbow.

The Verdict

The actual match isn't terrible, albeit unremarkable. It's definitely not a good WrestleMania main event, and is more than deserving of its reputation as one of the worst ever. It is also overbooked, with a ton of interference and shenanigans not just during the ending, but throughout the match. In short, it's not a very good match, and isn't really worth rewatching.

Match #3: Over the Limit 2011

A month after their lackluster WrestleMania match, John Cena and The Miz would square off for the WWE Championship once again, this time in a Triple Threat Steel Cage match alongside John Morrison at Extreme Rules 2011. That match is very good, and will not be covered here, but ended with Cena winning the title. Cena would retain the title by disqualification against Miz the following night on Raw, but after Miz won a #1 contenders triple threat the following week, a rubber match would be set for Over the Limit. This time, however, they'd face off in an I Quit match.
Immediately, this raises red flags. John Cena's whole thing was that he doesn't quit."Never Give Up" was literally on just about every piece of merchandise he has. As such, any match where he had to submit or quit was generally seen as a foregone conclusion. And even then, this match did not get a good reception. Even though Dave Meltzer gave it a two-and-a-half-star rating, Cagematch has it sitting at a 2.40 out of 10, even worse than the WrestleMania match. Let's take a look for ourselves.
The bell rings, prompting Miz to take a mic from referee Mike Chioda. Miz says he can't believe Cena would pick an I Quit match, since the only rules are, in his exact words, "one of us has to say I Quit."
...

The Verdict...

OK, that's not actually the end of the match, but Jesus Christ, IT'S THE ONE THING YOU CAN'T SAY AND YOU SAID IT. Miz says that not only can he use weapons or throw Cena off the stage (pretty sure he can do the second one anyway), but that Miz's lackey Alex Riley, who's at ringside, can do it too. Miz offers to let Cena walk if he says he quits, but he refuses. So, who's ready for ODDS TO BE OVERCOME!
The Miz goes for a clothesline, but Cena ducks it. Cena takes out both Riley & Miz with clotheslines before hitting a back body drop on Riley. Cena follows up by whipping Miz into the corner and a bulldog before hitting a gutwrench suplex. Cena locks in the STF on Miz, but Riley quickly runs in and breaks it up. Riley pounces on Cena, beating him down before whipping him chest first into the corner. Riley follows up with a suplex before going to clothesline him out of the ring. Cena ducks it and sends Riley out of the ring, and ducks a clothesline from Miz before hitting a shoulder block. Cena follows up with another shoulder block and a spin-out powerbomb before hitting the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Cena goes for the Attitude Adjustment, but Miz fights out and hits the backbreaker/neckbreaker combo.
Miz sets up for the Skull Crushing Finale, but Cena blocks it and quickly hits the AA. However, Riley runs in with his briefcase and hits him in the head. Riley batters Cena with the case before he & Miz pick Cena up. The two set him on the top rope to hit a double-team powerbomb. Chioda asks Cena, but Cena doesn't quit. Miz & Riley toss Cena to the outside, where they follow him and ram him into the barricade. Chioda asks again, but Cena doesn't quit. Miz rips the pads away from the barricade, exposing the steel before they whip Cena into the steel. Chioda asks again, but Cena doesn't quit.
Miz & Riley rip apart the announce table, each grabbing a monitor and hitting Cena with it. Chioda asks again, but Cena won't quit. Cena fights back with a clothesline on Riley and tries to whip Miz into the steps, but Miz reverses it and sends Cena into the steps. Miz follows up with a DDT onto the steps before ripping the mic from Chioda's hands and asking Cena himself. Cena says no. Miz instructs Riley to grab the top half of the steps and threatens Cena that he'll slam them on his ribs if he doesn't quit. Cena tells Miz to go to hell, so Riley slams the steps down on his ribs. You probably get the gist of what this match is going to be 9 minutes in. We're barely a third of the way through it.
Chioda asks Cena again, but Cena doesn't quit. Riley holds Cena in place as Miz grabs a kendo stick from under the ring. Miz again offers Cena the chance to quit, but Cena tells him he hits like a girl. Miz has no time for sexism, so he hits Cena repeatedly with the stick. Chioda asks him again, but Cena won't quit. Miz continues hitting Cena and Chioda asks again, but Cena doesn't quit. Miz lands one final kendo stick shot and Chioda asks again, but Cena still won't quit. Miz & Riley change course, ramming Cena into the barricade again before throwing him down on the entrance ramp.
Cena crawls onto the stage, where Miz hits a suplex. Chioda asks again, and Cena says "no" again. Miz boots Cena off the stage to the concrete floor, where Chioda asks again and Cena doesn't quit. Riley drapes Cena over a camera crane as Miz demands a cameraman give him his belt. Miz again offers Cena the chance to quit before he whips him, but Cena says Miz has no balls. Miz repeatedly whips Cena, but every time Chioda asks if he wants to quit, he says no. Miz drags Cena back to the ring as Riley grabs a chair, but Cena fights back.
Cena floors both men and rams Riley into the ring post, but Miz shuts him down with the chair. Miz throws Cena back in the ring and tries to hit him with the chair, but Cena springs to life and lays into him with punches. Riley runs in, but Cena side steps him, sending him right into Chioda and knocking him down. Cena goes for the AA on Riley, but Miz makes the save with a kick and hits a reverse DDT on Cena. Miz wedges the unfolded chair between the ropes before hitting a Skull Crushing Finale onto the chair. Miz holds the mic up to Cena, but Cena won't quit.
Miz then talks to a small child in the crowd and says that if he doesn't want to see Cena go through any more pain, then he should tell him to quit. "NEVER! NOT ANY DAY!" says the child. Miz gaslights the child before hitting Cena with the microphone. Miz tells the child to tell him again. Another child tells Miz to quit, so he walks away and hits Cena with the mic again. Miz wedges Cena through the exposed barricade before Riley hands him a chair. Miz gives Cena the chance to quit again, but Cena just says the kids are smarter than him. Miz bashes Cena with the chair before Riley asks Cena if he quits. Cena...quits...

The Verdict...

Except he didn't. As Miz & Riley celebrate, Chioda goes to grab the title, only to notice a cell phone on the ground.
Chioda puts to his ear and then calls off the ring announcer. As Miz & Riley argue with him, he plays the phone into the mic. It's a recording of Cena saying "I QUIT!" It's the exact same ruse from The Rock & Mankind's I Quit match at the Royal Rumble 1999, now made for the digital age. Chioda restarts the match, and Miz & Riley quickly leave the ring. Riley grabs the title while Miz holds Cena up. Riley tries to hit Cena, but Cena ducks and Miz takes the hit. Cena quickly gives Riley an AA through the announce table before taking off his own belt. With Miz down, Cena takes his belt and whips Miz, chasing him up the ramp and backstage. Cena drags Miz back onto the stage and locks in the STF. The Miz quickly quits, giving Cena the win.

The (Actual) Verdict

An ungodly ridiculously booked match. Cena gets demolished for the entirety of the match by two people using weapons, just to spring to life at the very end to win. Genuinely, if you've ever wondered why people didn't like Cena when he was in prime "Super Cena" mode, then this match is the perfect example. This might be the most egregious example of the "Overcoming the Odds" overkill that WWE did so often with Cena. 25 minutes of this, almost uninterrupted. This is a brutal match to watch, avoid it.

Match #4: WrestleMania 33

We've got one final match between John Cena and The Miz on pay-per-view, and for this one, we're jumping forward almost six years to WrestleMania 33 in 2017. This is the only non-singles match I mentioned earlier in the post, as it's Cena and his then-girlfriend Nikki Bella taking on Miz and his wife Maryse. Cena & Miz had started a feud after a #1 contendership battle royal on SmackDown, where Cena eliminated Miz, who then illegally eliminated Cena. Around the same time, Maryse would cost Nikki Bella a match with Natalya. This sets up a mixed tag match between the two couples at WrestleMania. While Meltzer again was relatively positive, giving the match a two-and-a-quarter star rating, Cagematch stayed disapproving, as it currently sits at a 3.70 out of 10. Let's take a look.
Legendary weatherman Al Roker is doing the ring-announcing...that's about it for the entrances. Nikki and Maryse start the match with a ton of circling. This is ended when Maryse immediately tags out to Miz, which brings in Cena. The men circle the ring, with Miz avoiding locking up before rolling out of the ring. Cena follows Miz out and chases him back into the ring, but Miz takes control by stomping away at Cena when he slides back in. Miz celebrates before punching Cena and choking him against the ropes. Referee Dan Engler (Rudy Charles from TNA) forces Miz to break the hold, turning his back and missing Maryse slapping Cena.
Miz keeps control, punching Cena in the corner before hitting his corner clothesline. Miz goes to the top rope, diving off and hitting a double axe handle for a two count. Miz follows up with three boots to the face. Cena retreats to the corner while Miz sets up for another corner clothesline. Cena dodges, however, and crawls over to make the tag. Before he can, Maryse runs over and yanks Nikki off the apron. This allows Miz to recover and hit the backbreaker/neckbreaker combo, which gets a two count. Cena blocks a punch and goes for a surprise Attitude Adjustment, but Miz slips out and hits the kneeling DDT for a two count.
Miz lays into Cena with his Daniel Bryan-parroting It Kicks. He then waves his hand in front of his face towards Nikki, who slaps him. This allows Cena to dump him out of the ring before making the tag to Nikki. Maryse is forced to get in the match, and Nikki immediately spears her to the ground. Nikki lays in to Maryse with punches before Maryse rolls out of the ring. Miz & Maryse console each other, only for Nikki to take out Miz with a suicide dive. Nikki throws Maryse back in the ring, where she floors her with a forearm. Miz runs in, only to get planted with a spin-out powerbomb from Cena. Cena & Nikki hit dual-Five Knuckle Shuffles before they pickup Miz & Maryse, respectively. Cena hits the AA while Nikki hits the Rack Attack 2.0 (A fireman's carry cutter/TKO) before they both make the covers for the three and the win.
After the match, Cena grabs the match and says he's proud of Nikki for coming back from her neck injury. This all leads to Cena going down on one knee, pulling a ring out of his pocket, and asking her to marry him. Nikki says yes, and the two kiss...they don't end up getting married.

The Verdict

It's just kind of...meh. Not offensively bad, but not anything all that good. That's about all I can really say.

  1. I watched this myself on the YouTube channel “Wendi Richter Fan” after frequent Cagematch commenter Conquistador37 made this statement about a Richter-Moolah match that happened in May 1984 on the MSG network. Arguably just as bad as their famous encounter on MTV encounter a few months later.

Richter just the other month was a brutal heel, tonight she's essentially a tweener. Wendi looks phenomenal and like a champion from top to toes, Moolah looks like an unearthed cadaver that passed away sometime last season. Moolah's selling is extremely POOR. There is a bow and arrow attempt by Wendi but Moolah refuses to go along with it because she's useless. I legitimately despise everything about Moolah and watching this really is enraging. There's a stupid "rolling around with the ref" spot shoe horned in (it’s TERRIBLE). Crappy leg scissors by Moolah who LEAVES HER SHOULDERS ON THE MAT that the ref doesn't even count; HORRIBLE! Then, when Wendi gets in the ropes, the ref doesn't force Moolah to break or even count! UGLY! The crowd is moaning a general discontented hum....the ref DOES count when Wendi chokes Moolah. STUPID! Things happen, Wendi starts looking good but eventually loses her cool with the terrible ref and pushes him. She then puts Moolah in a Boston crab but is DQ'ed at 12:21. Fabulous Moolah is total trash. AVOID!"

Also, some of the non-Mabel 1995 KOTR matches could qualify as clunkers.

Diesel & Bam Bam vs Sid & Tatanka
Savio Vega’s previous two matches (Yokozuna and The Roadie)
Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler (admittedly the crowd loved it and Lawler is a heat generator but the two didn’t have great chemistry in the ring)

  2. Confession time: I've consistently voted for the Jeff Jarrett matches in Australia to be next but I switched to Punk/Ryback this go around simply because everyone's talking about CM Punk right now

And relatedly, here's another bad Punk match!

    1. I had a feeling the Punk/Ryback one was gonna get a ton of votes after Survivor Series.

    1. I'll add these to the list. It's only fitting I look at that Cena-Big Show match considering the match that led to it (Cena vs John Laurinaitis) used to be at the absolute bottom of the rankings.

  4. John Cena vs Austin Theory at Wrestlemania 39 wasn't really good as Cena was wrestling like if he was on auto pilot and while Theory did the best he could unfortunately it wasn't a great way to open an otherwise great Wrestlemania.

  5. Here's a US Title match that happened on Raw 1/16/12 which saw Jack Swagger utterly wreck Zack Ryder to win the title. Zack did not get any offence and which led to the Woo Woo Movement getting snuffed as well as Ryder getting buried. Yeah this came at a time where WWE couldn't give a hoot about the mid card belts and will punish a wrestler for getting over and making the company money.

    1. I'll add it to the list. WWE did Ryder so dirty, it's crazy. I'm glad he's been able to reinvent himself on the indies (genuinely, his match with Nick Gage was one of my favorites of 2021.)
      Thanks for the suggestion!

  6. Now with cm punk return in wwe , we can talk about what are his worst match in aew?

    1. I don't know. I have his match World title match with Jon Moxley from Dynamite on the list for the future, but that was more of an angle than a bad match wrestling-wise. His match with QT Marshall from the Thanksgiving Eve 2021 Dynamite has the worst reviews (sub 5.00 on Cagematch) but that's still not terrible. He really didn't wrestle that much in AEW (only 33 matches) so the sample size isn't that great. His worst matches were just kind of forgettable.

  7. Here are some matches from one of WWE's most notoriously bad PPV's of all time Crown Jewel 2018.

    Dolph Ziggler vs Shane McMahon

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
