My Thoughts on RAW (1/2/17): National Treasure: List of Jericho

  • We kick off the show with Mick Foley, who got a haircut. He jokes about forgetting the city RAW was two weeks ago before Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho come out. Owens blasts Foley for forcing Jericho to be locked in a shark cage above the ring at the Royal Rumble before saying that Foley is abusing his power by giving Roman Reigns another title shot. Jericho adds that Foley is abusing his power by rewarding Seth Rollins for attacking Jericho in the parking lot, but punishing him for strategically helping Owens retain the Universal Championship at Roadblock by putting him in the cage of Jericho...and he's gonna LOCK HIM IN, MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! Owens says this the Kevin Owens Show, so Foley decides to give him an actual talk show, with his guest Goldberg. Owens decides to practice for it by grilling by asking Foley why he thinks he can abuse his power before Stephanie McMahon comes out. She says he's not abusing his power but wishes Foley would've consulted her on it. Stephanie then books Roman Reigns vs Chris Jericho for the United States Championship, where if Reigns gets disqualified for counted out, he loses the title. Jericho & Owens suggest banning Rollins from ringside, so Foley suggests banning Jericho from ringside...for his match. Dammit Foley. Stephanie drops the fact that SmackDown beat RAW in the ratings last week and she's sick of it, so she books Kevin Owens vs Seth Rollins, with the loser being banned from ringside.
  • Kevin Owens vs Seth Rollins-Rollins takes the fight right to Owens, sending him to the outside and diving onto him twice. The two brawl at ringside, which Owens comes out on the winning end of before taking the fight back to the ring. The two trade blows for a while until Rollins hits a Blockbuster for a near fall before the commercial break. We come back see Owens working over Rollins with a chinlock before hitting a senton for a near fall. Owens beats down on Rollins before backbody dropping him to the outside. Owens follows him out and goes for the Cannonball into the barricade, but Rollins dodges it. The two trade blows back in the ring before Rollins avoids a Pop-Up Powerbomb and hits an enziguri. The two trade shots in the corner before Rollins catches Owens on a Cannonball attempt and hits a corner STO followed by a Sling Blade. Rollins hits a superkick and goes for the Pedigree, but Owens blocks it. Rollins is able to send Owens out of the ring and hits a suicide dive. The two fight into the timekeeper's area, where Owens gets disqualified for using the ring bell, meaning he's banned from ringside for Reigns vs Jericho tonight. Rollins then tries to hit the Pedigree on Owens, but Owens escapes again.
  • Cesaro vs Karl Anderson with Luke Gallows-Why is Sheamus not at ringside with Cesaro? Because he took a seat at commentary. The two lock up before Cesaro takes Anderson down with a shoulder tackle. Anderson comes back with a monkey flip, which Cesaro lands on his feet for, before hitting an arm drag. Cesaro comes back with an uppercut followed by a gut wrench suplex for a near fall. Cesaro uppercuts a seated Anderson's back before Anderson sends him to the apron, where a distraction from Luke Gallows allows him to knock him down with a single leg dropkick before the commercial break. We come back to see Cesaro block a suplex from Anderson and hit a suplex of his own. Cesaro uppercuts Anderson twice, but Anderson avoids the Uppercut Train and gets a near fall off a dropkick in the corner. Cesaro comes back with an uppercut to Anderson's back before hitting multiple uppercuts followed by a double jump springboard crossbody for a near fall. Cesaro calls for the swing, but Gallows distracts him, allowing Anderson to hit a spinebuster for a near fall. Sheamus runs down to prevent any further interference before Cesaro hits a springboard uppercut for a near fall. Cesaro goes for the Neutralizer, but Anderson reverses it and avoids the Cesaro Swing by getting to the ropes. Cesaro then sets up Anderson on the top rope before dropkicking and uppercutting him for a near fall. Cesaro goes for a superplex, but Gallows hops up onto the apron. Sheamus tries to get him down, but accidentally knocks Cesaro down in the process, causing him to get crotched on the top rope. Anderson capitalizes and hits a diving neckbreaker for the win. That was a good match, I enjoyed it.
  • Sami Zayn vs Braun Strowman in a Last Man Standing match-Zayn uses his quickness to avoid Strowman at first before quickly grabbing a kendo stick and going to town on Strowman. Strowman eventually blocks one shot and snaps the kendo stick in half. Strowman throughs Zayn across the ring, where Zayn rolls out and grabs another kendo stick. After another beating, Strowman takes the kendo stick away and catches Zayn off a barricade moonsault before dropping Zayn on the barricade. Zayn starts sending Strowman into the ring posts and goes for the torpedo DDT through the ring post, but Strowman blocks it with a big forearm. Zayn beats the count and gets back in the ring, only to get destroyed when he gets back in. Strowman continuously knocks Zayn down as Zayn keeps breaking the count and keeps the match going. After a commercial break, we come back to see Strowman throw Sami Zayn into the announce table. Strowman continues to batter Zayn, throwing him into the backstage area. Zayn finds a pipe, which Zayn uses to beat down Strowman with before Strowman throws him onto some crates. Zayn dodges a crate thrown by Strowman before diving onto him and hits with a chair. Zayn continues to hit Strowman with the chair all the way out to the stage, where Strowman throws him on to. Strowman throws Zayn into the minitron and goes for a running powerslam, but Zayn escapes and goes back to using the chair. They fight near the edge, where Strowman grabs the chair, but Zayn kicks it in his face and knocks him down through tables with a crossbody. Both men still break the count before Zayn goes back to using the chair. They fight onto the ramp, where Strowman throws Zayn down to ringside and rams him down. Strowman hits a running powerslam on the outside but Zayn barely beats the count. Strowman continues to batter Zayn, breaking the counts himself when Zayn starts to move, before hitting another running powerslam on the outside to finally end the match. That was awesome, that was a really great match. Afterward, Mick Foley comes down with paramedics to help out Zayn, but Strowman attacks Zayn on the stretcher, throwing him into the barricade.
  • In the locker room, Jack Gallagher teaches the New Day how to duel like gentlemen before weirding him out with their hip shaking.
  • IT'S A NEW DAY, YES IT IS! Outcomes the New Day, who say that 2016 was a good year for the New Day before announcing that all three of them will be in the Royal Rumble match. They then say they'll be reading off their New Year's Resolutions before being interrupted by Titus O'Neil mocking their entrance. Titus says that if they want to reach their 2017 goals, they'll need a new member of the New Day...him! He says he's got the rhythm and the musical talent, blowing his whistle to the beat of "New Day Rocks" while twerking. Titus also says his face should be on a box of Booty Os, but Woods says his face should be on a milk carton. Titus then calls him the weak link of the New Day, so Woods challenges him to a match right now. Titus punches Woods in the mouth before accepting the challenge.
  • Titus O'Neil vs Xavier Woods with Big E & Kofi Kingston-The match starts off quick before Titus hits a big boot. Titus beats down on Woods in the corner before hitting a body slam for a near fall. Titus continues to out-muscle Woods until Woods hits a thrust kick and sends Titus out of the ring. Woods follows that up with a somersault tope for a near fall before going to the top rope, but Titus catches him and hits two backbreakers before tossing him to the side. Titus goes for another backbreaker, but Woods counters it and rolls through with a sunset flip and gets the three.
  • Backstage, Bayley asks Stephanie McMahon why she let Dana Brooke be the referee in her match against Charlotte. Stephanie said she had no choice because of Charlotte's lawyers, but admits that she never wanted Bayley on RAW, Foley did. She says Bayley is ordinary, unlike Charlotte, and she's just...Bayley. Bayley fires back, saying she belongs in WWE and on RAW and that being just Bayley is fine with her. Stephanie then decides to give Bayley a match tonight, with the winner facing Charlotte at the Royal Rumble...against Nia Jax.
  • Cedric Alexander & Alica Fox walk up to Noam Dar, who apologizes for the way he's acted towards them but still calls Alicia "sweet cheeks" before running off.
  • Cedric Alexander with Alicia Fox vs Drew Gulak with Tony Nese-Drew Gulak didn't get an entrance, which is a shame because his entrance theme is pretty awesome. The two kick off with a quick exchange before Alexander dropkicks Gulak. Gulak then takes control by bodyslamming Alexander into the ropes before beating down on Alexander and hitting a backbody drop. Gulak continues to work over Alexander until Alexander comes back and hits a handspring roundhouse kick. Nese hops up on the apron, only to be quickly yanked down by Alicia Fox. This distraction allows Gulak to get the roll up win with a hand full of tights. Fine little match, could've benefitted from more time, though.
  • Roman Reigns (c) vs Chris Jericho-United States Championship (If Reigns gets disqualified or counted out, he loses the title)-Jericho takes the fight right to Reigns, but Reigns fires right back with a clothesline. Reigns hits a Samoan Drop for a near fall before Jericho hits a missile dropkick for a near fall of his own. Reigns dodges a body guillotine and clotheslines Jericho a bunch before Jericho sends him to the apron and dropkicks him to the outside. Jericho goes for a baseball slide, but Reigns dodges it, only for Jericho to dodge a drive-by dropkick that sends Reigns right into the post. Reigns barely beat the 10 count before the commercial break. We come back to see Jericho knock Reigns down with a knee strike. Jericho goes for the running bulldog, but Reigns counters it and sends Jericho into the corner, where he clotheslines him multiple times and hits a delayed side slam for a near fall. Reigns wanks his fist and calls for the Superman Punch, but Jericho avoids, only for Reigns to get his knees up for the Lionsault. Jericho blocks the Spear, Reigns blocks the Codebreaker, and Jericho reverses a powerbomb attempt before locking in the Walls of Jericho. Reigns breaks the hold and almost gets the roll up win but Jericho kicks out. Jericho goes for the flying nothing but Reigns catches him with a Superman Punch for a near fall. Reigns calls for the Spear, but Jericho counters it. Reigns blocks the Walls of Jericho before Jericho sends him into the ring post. Jericho takes the turnbuckle pad off of one of the corners, which distracts the referee so he can grab the United States Championship. Instead of hitting Reigns, Jericho tries to pull the old Eddie Guerrero trick by tossing Reigns the belt and pretending to get hit by the belt. However, he uses the ensuing confusion to hit the Codebreaker, but only gets a two count. Jericho then charges at Reigns in the corner, but Reigns dodges, causing Jericho to hit the exposed turnbuckle and stumble right back into a spear. Reigns gets the three and the win. Pretty good match.
  • Brian Kendrick vs TJ Perkins-Kendrick rushes Perkins as soon as the bell rings, but Perkins comes right back with a springboard crossbody for a near fall. Perkins hits a sliding dropkick for a near fall before Kendrick drags Perkins into the ropes hard for a near fall. Kendrick hit an inverted exploder suplex for another near fall before blocking a springboard attempt by Perkins. Kendrick tries to lock in the Captain's Hook, but Perkins avoids it and hits a Super Frankensteiner. Perkins then blocks the Sliced Bread #2 and hits a Detonation Kick before locking in the knee bar for the submission win. Fine, quick match.
  • Emmalina is still premiering soon.
  • Big Cass with Enzo Amore vs Rusev & Jinder Mahal with Lana-Why isn't Enzo wrestling tonight? Well apparently, Enzo actually hurt himself this time, so Big Cass is wrestling alone tonight. Mahal starts off with Cass, who soundly beats him down around the ring until Rusev makes a blind tag so Cass beat both of them up. Cass continues to dominate until Rusev finally hits a superkick for the win. JoJo calls Mahal "Ginger Mahal" when announcing the winners, which is a classic Eva Marie move.
  • Bayley vs Nia Jax-Charlotte is on commentary to see who she faces at the Royal Rumble. Bayley goes right after Nia when the match starts, but Nia is able to take control with a shoulder breaker. Nia continues to overpower Bayley until Bayley sends Nia shoulder-first into the ring post, but Nia keeps control with a body avalanche, followed by two elbow drops and a leg drop. Nia goes to the second rope, only for Sasha Banks' music to hit. This distraction allows Bayley to hit a Super Bayley-to-Belly for the win.
  • We close out the show with the first ever Kevin Owens Show! Complete with a sh*tty lawn chair for his guest, and I'm not joking, a person with a Kevin Owens Show sign strapped to his head. Owens brings out his guest...Chris Jericho. Jericho then says that because the crowd chanted for Goldberg, Tampa Bay has made the list! Jericho then announces that he will be in the Royal Rumble. Goldberg then comes out. Goldberg says that Jericho is going to be first before Owens tells him to take a seat. Goldberg tosses the chair aside, so Owens tosses the rest of the furniture out of the ring. Owens & Goldberg go face to face and yell at each other before Paul Heyman comes out. Heyman says Brock Lesnar is not here tonight but says that Lesnar will win the Royal Rumble. Goldberg says he'll take care of Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble before winning it all. Roman Reigns is out next, and he & Goldberg stare eachother down. Braun Strowman then comes out and takes Heyman's microphone before saying he's winning the Royal Rumble. Strowman enters the ring, so Reigns & Goldberg give him a double spear to close the show.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
