Worst in the World: Yoshiko vs Act Yasukawa-Stardom Queen's Shout

凄惨マッチ
Seisan Matchi
The Ghastly Match
That is the name the now infamous match between Yoshiko and Act Yasukawa at World Wonder Ring Stardom's Queen's Shout event is known by. The match, which saw Yoshiko defend the company's top title, the World of Stardom Championship, against Yasukawa, seems good on paper. Yoshiko was a dominant monster and a protege of one of Stardom's founders, joshi legend Nanae Takahashi, while Yasukawa was one of the company's rising stars, having held Stardom's secondary championship, the Wonder of Stardom title, twice, and held it going into this match. This was also a match we were supposed to get earlier than we had, only for that match to be canceled due to Yasukawa suffering a Graves' disease flare-up. On top of all that, Stardom, founded in 2010 by longtime joshi promoter Rossy Ogawa, former wrestler Fuka, and the aforementioned Nanae Takahashi, is widely considered to have some of the top wrestling in the world, and you can count the number of genuine in-ring disasters the company has had on one hand. However, this match ended up being one of those disasters, and nearly a decade later, it's still a match that is considered one of the worst, if not the worst, matches in the history of wrestling.
There is zero concrete information about why this happened. Whether it be legit heat between the two or Yoshiko not liking the booking, there are a ton of answers that I can't verify. From what I've been able to find, it seems like a big part of the background to this match is the contrast between old school and new school values in joshi puroresu. Anyone whose seen the documentary Gaea Girls knows that old-school joshi training is intense and brutal, both physically and mentally, to say the least. That brings us back to Nanae Takahashi, who came out of All Japan Women's training classes (the same promotion that Gaea Japan founder & Gaea Girls subject Chigusa Nagayo graduated from, albeit 16 years apart), and has been considered to carry that tough mentality into Stardom. As I mentioned, one of the people who followed Takahashi's mentality was her protege Yoshiko, who was a brawling monster who wouldn't have been out of place taking on Bull Nakano or Aja Kong. Compare that to Yasukawa, who embodied the more modern style that Stardom is best known for. It's a combustible situation that combusts very quickly in the ring.
This match is now infamous, not just in modern wrestling, but wrestling in general. Even if you've never watched a minute of a Stardom show, you've probably heard about Yoshiko vs Yasukawa. And when I say infamous, I don't mean in the sense of the normal matches I cover here. This goes beyond bad wrestling, it's a horrible, beyond unpleasant experience. In fact, this match is so unpleasant that it actually holds the distinction of being the absolute worst-rated match on Cagematch.net, coming in at a 0.05 out of 10. This match is easily the biggest black eye in the history of Stardom. Now, if you've never heard anything about this match, you might be wondering "How bad can this actually be?" Well, let's get into this.
The match starts with a stare-down, with Yasukawa pacing around the ring while Yoshiko stands in the corner. Yasukawa slowly approaches Yoshiko before landing a forearm strike. Yoshiko responds with a forearm of her own, and just like that, the match is fucked. Yasukawa fires back with a punch which seems to connect with Yoshiko's face. Yoshiko responds by punching back, sending Yasukawa stumbling into the corner. This is where Yoshiko just lays into Yasukawa with very stiff, very real punches. The referee Kyohei Wada tries to break them up, but Yoshiko doesn't stop, grabbing Yasukawa by the hair before dragging her down to the mat with a headlock. Despite Wada's attempts, Yoshiko continues pinning Yasukawa into the mat, punching her directly in the face while Yasukawa can't defend herself. Wada even tries to physically pull Yoshiko off of Yasukawa, but she doesn't budge before Wada tries counting her out. Any semblance of this being an actual match is completely out the window. And yet, for some reason, it's still going.
Yoshiko finally backs away from Yasukawa and goes back to her corner. Yasukawa is in rough shape, bleeding from her nose, and with her face starting to swell up. Yasukawa crawls over to her corner, where her Oedo Tai stablemates, among them Kyoko Kimura, Heidi Lovelace (the future Ruby Riott/Ruby Soho) and I believe Kris Wolf, Hudson Envy, and Dragonita (not 100% sure on the last three) attend to her. I believe Wada asks Yasukawa if she wants to continue, and she says yes. The match restarts, only for Yoshiko to immediately walk over and grab Yasukawa by the hair. Yasukawa gives Yoshiko a few stiff punches to the face, prompting Wada to step in again, only for Yoshiko to again start pummeling Yasukawa with punches to the face. Yasukawa falls to the mat, but Yoshiko continues punching & clubbing her in the head and face. She finally lands a kick to the head, but Yasukawa quickly gets back up. I genuinely cannot fathom why this is still going.
Yasukawa goes for a kick, but Yoshiko blocks it and immediately drags Yasukawa back down to the mat. Yoshiko forcefully pins Yasukawa down and Wada starts to count, but Yasukawa gets her foot on the ropes. Yoshiko responds with a stomp to the back of the head. Yasukawa gets to her feet, and I don't know why, but this is where they start to pretend this isn't a complete nightmare and try working for a bit. Yoshiko whips Yasukawa into the ropes and knocks her down to the mat with a rough shoulder block. Yoshiko does the same thing a second time before going back to just stomping & kicking Yasukawa in the head & face. Yoshiko tosses Yasukawa from one corner to the opposite corner before putting her in a front facelock, holding it in until Wada forces her to break. That's the end of the wrestling portion.
Yasukawa tries to fight back with a punch, but Yoshiko immediately blocks it and throws Yasukawa down to the mat by her hair. Yoshiko pins Yasukawa's face into the mat and starts punching her in the back of the head. Yoshiko rolls Yasukawa over and stomps & stands on her stomach before Yasukawa rolls out of the ring. Odeo Tai quickly attend to her at ringside, and it's here we see that the right side of Yasukawa's face is badly swollen. Yasukawa tries to get back in the ring, but the rest of Odeo Tai  physically restrain her and keep her out of the ring. Yasukawa screams as she tries to get in the ring, only for Kimura to throw in the towel, mercifully ending the match. Wada raises Yoshiko's hand, but this match would go down, understandably, as a no-contest.
With the rest of Odeo Tai holding Yasukawa, Kimura charges at Yoshiko and attacks her, grabbing her by the hair. Wada, along with another referee who runs out, Yoshiko's Heisei-gun stablemates, Io Shirai, Mayu Iwatani, Reo Hazuki, and Takumi Iroha (not 100% sure on the final two), and I believe Hudson Envy. Kimura's very clearly emotional, while the rest of Odeo Tai takes Yasukawa, still screaming, to the back.

The Fallout

So, I've never done a section like this for any other Worst in the World, but in a situation like this, the fallout is something I didn't want to just blow past. So, here it is. Yasukawa was taken to the hospital following the match, where she was diagnosed with fractured cheek, nasal, and orbital bones. She'd be out of action for seven months, and would vacate the Wonder of Stardom title. Three days later, Yoshiko would apologize at a press conference held by Stardom, where she would be stripped of the World of Stardom title and was suspended indefinitely. Along with that, Rossy Ogawa, Fuka, and Nanae Takahashi would all take a 30% pay cut for three months, and Takahashi would actually leave Stardom soon after.
What actually happens next with Yoshiko in Stardom is messy. Three months after the match, Stardom announced that Yoshiko would be retiring from the ring. The retirement ceremony ended with a ten-bell salute, during which Yoshiko would promptly leave the ring before it was even finished. Whether or not Stardom actually fired her (just with different language) or Yoshiko quit the company is up for debate. Even if brutally assaulting your opponent during a match seems like it would prime grounds to blackball someone from the business, Yoshiko returned to wrestling in March 2016, over a full year after the Ghastly Match, working in across various Japanese promotions. Her main promotion, SEAdLINNNG, was founded by Nanae Takahashi. And if you were thinking "Well, Yoshiko must've been blacklisted from Stardom at least", Yoshiko would actually return to Stardom for a single match in 2021.
Yasukawa would return to the ring in September 2015, but would end up retiring just three months later due to her injuries. Yasukawa would act as a manager for Odeo Tai for a few months after before leaving Stardom in April 2016. However, in the one positive bit in this story, Yasukawa was able to return to the ring in 2021. Since returning, she has primarily wrestled in the Actwres girl'Z promotion.

  1. Scary stuff. Anyway, I was watching the Juggalo Championship Wrestling Legends and Icons show in 2011 this week. To their credit, the ICP organized the show better than Heroes of Wrestling and seem like genuine fans. Their 1998 run with the Oddities and their theme song is a guilty pleasure of mine. Mick Foley and Kevin Gill were a pleasure to listen to on commentary and the wrestlers seemed to be having a fun time and I didn’t mind it myself.

That being said, you could do an entire induction dedicated to the show if you wish but my four personal recommendations are:

Roddy Piper and Bob Orton vs Mick Foley and Terry Funk

Bob Backlund vs Ken Patera - 100% of the blame goes to that plebeian Patera for that one!

The 15 man battle royal - Viscera and Zack Gowan needed three takes to execute the proper finish! Not to mention the sloppy camera work that missed several eliminations.

Greg Valentine vs Tito Santana (although I liked the nod to history with Santana smashing the plaque against the cage)

    1. After some deliberation, I’ll add the Rock and Roll Express vs Midnight Express match to my request. That’s why I’m anonymous so I don’t get Cornette and his cult followers running after me with pitchforks.

    2. Legends & Icons is an idea for a post that has been requested already. I'm not sure how many matches I'll cover from it (I'll probably decide once I watch it) but I'll definitely cover the matches you listed above. Thanks for the suggestions!

  2. Here's a multi match request from a show you are quite familiar with, a show many dub as one of if not the worst Wrestlemania ever Wrestlemania 4.

    The Battle Royal
    Ted Dibiase vs Jim Duggan
    Don Muracco vs Dino Bravo
    Randy Savage vs Butch Reed
One Man Gang vs Bam Bam Bigelow
Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant
    Ted Dibiase vs Don Murraco
Brutus Beefcake vs Honkey Tonk Man

Randy Savage vs One Man Gang

  3. I've been going through the first TNA shows while Bryan and Vinny do it, and dear god there's some awful stuff. Just going from episodes 8 and 9 there's:

    Bo Dupp vs. Ed Ferrara
Don Harris vs. Malice First Blood
    Jeff Jarrett vs. Apolo
Bruce vs. Taylor Vaughn Evening Gown Match
    Bruce vs. random fan
Don Harris vs. Malice again (Harris brother comes out in a SS shirt)
    Bo Dupp vs. Teo

    1. I'll add them to the list. I've got a planned look back at some of the worst/weirdest matches from the first five TNA shows, so a follow-up covering episodes 6-10's worst matches (the one's you requested included) feels fitting. Thanks for the suggestions!

  4. Do you seen a bad Gunter match in wwe or wrestling?

    1. Honestly, not really. Gunther's been pretty elite for over a decade at this point. At worst, he's had a few underwhelming matches on Raw & SmackDown.

  6. If you can still find it (the original video was taken down), the match where Tony Kozina basically tried to kill a 16 year old boy (Ryan Kidd) for the heinous crime of... cutting a promo on him is an obvious choice for a red match.

Homicide vs Joe Alonzo (Homicide no-selling everything)
Dak Draper and Mims vs The Brothers of Funstruction
    Matt Cardona vs Ricky Morton
Blunt Force Trauma vs Mike Knox and Trevor Murdoch
    Tyrus vs EC3

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
