This past Sunday, the third edition of Global Wars, a co-pay-per-view held by Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. What has gotten the most people talking is the ending of the show, which saw the main event match between Ring of Honor Champion Jay Lethal and Colt Cabana interrupted by the Bullet Club, including their newest member Adam Cole (BAYBAY!) and the show ended with an extended beatdown by the Bullet Club. This finish has drawn the apparently upset a lot of fans, with Larry Csonka from 411Mania calling the ending of the show "bullsh*t."
Here's basically what happened, after Jay Lethal's valet Taeler Hendrix was ejected from ringside, Colt Cabana locked in the Billy Goat's Curse submission. This prompted Hendrix to run out and pull the referee out of the ring. This brought out the Young Bucks, and they each superkicked the referee and Taeler Hendrix, They both get in the ring and toss Lethal and Cabana Bullet Club t-shirts. Suddenly, the lights go back, and when the come back on, Adam Cole (BAYBAY!) is standing in the ring with a Bullet Club t-shirt. What follows is 51 SUPERKICKS dished out to everyone from Lethal, Cabana, the Ring of Honor security and camera guys, even the Young Bucks' father, all while commentatorSteve Corino Mr. Wrestling III marks out on commentary until he and fellow commentator Kevin Kelly got superkicked themselves, complete with a "Superkick Counter" to count how many superkicks the Bullet Club hit. So what went wrong?
Well, for starters, and this is a big one, Steve Corino. Normally he's a good commentator, but my God he was the pits in this main event. Watching & listening to him mark out because the Bullet Club was superkicking everyone got old VERY quickly. What's even worse, Corino was cheering on as a group of outsiders literally hijacked the show, which was run by the company he works for. Could you imagine if when the Nexus invaded RAW and started tearing the ringside apart, and all you could here was Jerry Lawler screaming on commentary "WOO HOO! THIS IS AWESOME! THIS IS GREAT!" It made no sense whatsoever. Also, why would the tech guys put the superkick counter up just because the Bullet Club said to?
Second, this was horribly similar those nWo beat downs that would go on forever back in the 90s. You know, those beat downs that used to go on forever until everyone got sick of them...and then they kept doing them. The ending of this show was a six minute beatdown that was 99% superkicks. I'd actually argue this is worse because it was overused in the 1990s, and someone still thought it was a good idea to end a pay-per-view with one in 2016. And considering how some of the people who were being beaten down couldn't stop marking out (*cough cough* Corino *cough*) made it feel like such a joke instead of something we should be taking seriously.
I think the biggest problem with this ending was that it didn't seem like Ring of Honor took it seriously. It's hard to act like something is a serious when the people being attacked are getting excited and marking out, so much so that they're proudly displaying how many times they've been superkicked. It looked more like everyone was cracking jokes and having fun instead of making this look like a serious thing. It just looked like one big joke.
