If you remember my entry on Hogan-Piper from SuperBrawl 1997, you might remember one of the first things I brought up was how WCW was pushing a wrestler (Roddy Piper) in the main event over a decade after he stopped being a main eventer. Well, I guess they never learned, because two years later at the exact same show, Piper is not only still wrestling, at 45 years old at the time, mind you, but is winning championships. In this match, he defends his WCW United States Championship against Scott Hall, who was 40. The midcard feud of WCW in the late 90s was two guys who combine for over 80 years of age. Can you believe this company went out of business?
After some early stalling, the match starts with Piper throwing his kilt in Hall's face and punching him. Piper tries to drag Hall to the corner by the kilt, but Hall sells it like it's a hip toss and it looks awkward beyond belief. Piper continues to punch away at Hall before grabbing Hall's Wolfpac t-shirt and starts choking him with it. HOW IS THAT NOT A DQ! You know what, it's WCW, the more I ask, the more annoying it gets.
Piper continues punching away at Hall before hitting a swinging neckbreaker. Roddy Piper has been in three matches now on this list and that might be the first actual wrestling move he's done in any match. Hall then locks in a wristlock with shoulder blocks while grabbing the hair, but Piper gets out by grabbing Hall's hair. Wolfpac member Disco Inferno hops up on the apron, so Piper knocks him down. Piper continues to control the match, hitting an atomic drop, followed by a reverse atomic drop and an eye poke right in front of the referee (...) before Hall tosses him into the ropes. Hall proceeds to beat down Piper at ringside before throwing him back in the ring.
Hall punches away at Piper before Piper delivers a low blow right in front of the referee (...why...), which Hall follows up with one of his own RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REFEREE (...why isn't that...keep it together.) Hall puts Piper in the Tree of Woe and kicks away at him, along with Disco grabbing Piper by the face. Hall locks in an abdominal stretch and grabs Disco's hand. This prompts the commentators to bicker over what that actually does. The referee eventually catches them and Piper hip tosses Hall. Piper misses an elbow drop and Hall puts him on the top rope, but Piper jumps onto Hall and locks in the sleeper hold.
Disco runs into the ring and Piper beats both of them down before Kevin Nash runs down, but Piper catches him on the ropes by kicking them, missing two times before catching it on the third. Hall uses the distraction to pin Piper with his feet on the ropes for the win.
The Verdict
A punch kick affair that ended in a f*ck finish. Piper couldn't really do anything outside of punches, eye pokes, and low blows, and Hall didn't do much either. And of course, like with just about every WCW match I talk about, the rules made no sense. Nothing got anybody disqualified.
