A Worst in the World RE:MATCH: Los Villanos vs Los Psycho Circus-Triplemanía XXIII

NOTE: Hey everyone, I just wanted to remind everyone that there will still be a brand new Worst in the World tomorrow. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy!)
300 entries in the Worst in the World. Back when I first started this series in 2016, I had a list of 99 matches to cover, almost exclusively covering one match in each post and mainly covering just WWE, WCW, and occasionally TNA. And now the list is three times as long, there are plenty more entries in the future, the number of matches covered in one post has gone as high as 14, and covered everything from new promotions, to classic failures, to even the most random companies. I genuinely cannot thank everyone enough for the support and the suggestions for new matches to cover. It means the absolute world to me. So, in honor of 300 entries, I'm going to try something new.
About a year ago, I got a comment from a frequent commenter Frost about Los Villanos vs Los Psycho Circus from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide's Triplemania XXIII, a match that formerly held the title of the absolute worst match I've covered, and possibly re-ranking it. That gave me the idea to revisit it. It's been over seven years since I last watched it, and I think my writing has changed a lot from when I first started this series. There are some posts I go back and look at that I think I can do better now. And since I've written that entry, four matches (excluding Red Tier matches) have all surpassed it in the rankings. Maybe going back and visiting it will lead to it reclaiming its spot at the bottom. Let's see.
This match, a trios match pitting Psycho Clown, Monster Clown, and Murder Clown of the killer clown-themed Los Psycho Circus against Villano III, IV, and V of Los Villanos, almost instantly became infamous thanks to Dave Meltzer, who gave the match the lowest possible rating of negative five stars. Not only is it the first match since 1999 to get that rating, it's only the second match since 1999 to get a rating lower than negative four stars. Cagematch.net currently has the match sitting 2.43 out of 10 on the site, which is not good, but still better than its atrocious star rating.
This match came about as part of a family vs family feud between Los Villanos and the Alvardo wrestling family, which Pyshco Clown is a part of. This rivalry included Villano I, IV, and V defeating Pyshco Clown's father Brazo de Plata, and uncles Brazo de Oro and El Brazo in a trios mask vs mask match back in 1988. Because of this, Villano IV would claim that the Villanos were better than the Alvardos, setting up this match. This would also be billed as the final match for Villano III, an end to his 45-year career, but in classic wrestling fashion, Villano III wrestled two more matches after this match. Villano III was 63 and had been dealing with knee & eyesight issues, so the fact that he's even wrestling here is...alarming. Let's take another look.
Before the match, referee Pepi "Tropi" Casas, who would also be working his final match, gets a big entrance. There's also a second referee that I don't know the name of for this match. The Villanos are out first, carrying what I believe are the company's Americas Trios Championships. They are not on the line in this match. Also, despite Villano III and IV having lost their masks in 2000 and 2009, respectively, both men come out with and wrestle in their masks. Los Psycho Cirus comes out with a variety of circus performers, including a man on a unicycle, men on stilts, and hula hoopers.
They throw up a match graphic, causing us to miss the first move of the match as two of the Villanos headbutt Monster Clown, knocking him to the ground. Murder Clown runs over and shoves the two back, which leads to about forty seconds of everyone standing around. The match just started and they're already stalling. Eventually, Pyshco Clown and one of the Villanos (I'm not sure which one, and the only version I could find is not great quality and has the Spanish commentary) lock up, tussling into the ropes. The unnamed referee breaks them up before Psycho Clown hits two arm drags. Villano pushes Psycho Clown, who responds by chopping him, knocking him to the ground. Another Villano runs in and chops him, so Monster Clown runs in and chops the second Villano. The last Villano runs in and chops Monster Clown, so Murder Clown runs in and clotheslines him to the ground.
All six men brawl in the ring, during which a charging Murder Clown gets dumped out of the ring by a Villano. That Villano follows up with a dropkick through the ropes before all three Villanos whip Psycho & Monster Clown into each other. Monster Clown rolls out of the ring as two Villanos hit a double backbody drop on Psycho Clown. The two follow up with a double elbow drop before the third Villano hits a very soft kick. The three rip Psycho Clown's mask before dragging him onto the apron and tossing him into the ring post. Monster Clown re-enters the ring, but quickly gets clotheslined by a Villano. All three beat him down in the corner before whipping him into the ropes, with two Villanos catching him with back elbows when he bounces back. The third Villano follows up with a low dropkick.
The three dump Monster Clown onto the apron, where they pretty slowly toss him into the ring post. Murder Clown enters, but the Villanos quickly swarm him and beat him down in the corner. They boot him out of the ring, with two of them exiting right after so they pick him up like a battering ram and run him into the post. All the Villanos enter the ring as Psycho & Monster Clown re-enter. The three Villanos beat down the two clowns, chopping away at them. Two Villanos hit the ropes, only for Murder Clown to grab their ankles and yank them out of the ring. This puts them in position for Psycho & Monster Clown to hit dual suicide dives.
Murder Clown enters the ring, and the remaining Villano tries to fend him off, but Murder Clown quickly picks him up in a gorilla press. Murder Clown slams him down before Monster Clown hops up on his back. Psycho Clown does the same before Muder Clown splashes the Villano with his team on his back.
Another Villano runs in and tries to fight, but he's quickly taken out by a double spinebuster from Monster & Murder Clown. Psycho Clown goes up to the top rope as his fellow clowns hold him in place for, essentially, the Dudley Boyz "WHASSUP!?" diving headbutt. They don't show Psycho Clown doing the actual "WHASSUP!?" taunt, but I'm going to believe that he did with all my heart.
The remaining Villano (based on later parts of this match, I believe this is Villano IV) runs back in the ring, but he's quickly swarmed by the clowns. Monster Clown holds Villano IV in place while Psycho Clown launches Murder Clown over him for a seated senton. All of this while the other Villanos don't really sell they just kind of...watch.
Psycho Circus begins ripping Villano IV's mask. One of the other Villanos did get booted by Psycho Clown, so I was wrong when I said he just started selling without getting hit in my original post. The other one just starts selling for no reason, so I was only half wrong.
The other Villanos rejoin the fight, with one sending a charging Psycho Clown out of the ring. Monster Clown runs over and tries to hold the Villano in place for a Murder Clown big boot, but the Villano ducks, and Monster Clown eats the boot. Murder Clown quickly body slams the Villano right after and goes to the top rope, only for the other two Villanos to run over and stop him. The Villanos try for a double superplex, but Psycho & Monster Clown run in and hit them right in the asses with baking sheets. They quickly hit a Tower of Doom spot, allowing the remaining Villano to crawl over and cover Murder Clown, but Murder Clown kicks out. Psycho & Monster Clown both take the opportunity to roll up the other two Villanos, but they both kick out as well.
Two Villanos clothesline Murder Clown out of the ring, and one of them avoids a dropkick from Psycho Clown. Another Villano backdrops Monster Clown out of the ring, dumping him onto Murder Clown, before two Villanos take out the outside clowns with dual suicide dives. It's just Psycho Clown and Villano III in the ring. I only think it's Villano III in this one spot specifically because Dave Meltzer said it was and, just based on the storyline, it makes the most sense for this to be Villano III. Psycho Clown whips Villano III in the back with what I think is a strap before grabbing a chair. However, Psycho Clown refuses to hit him, probably out of respect given what's about to come. This is quite literally five seconds after he hit him with a strap.
The two exchange chops before Psycho Clown floors Villano III with a clothesline. Psycho Clown goes to the top rope and hits a diving headbutt. He makes the cover and the unnamed referee counts the pin, only for Psycho Clown to stop the pin himself. Psycho Clown refuses to pin him out of a sign of respect, instead bowing to him. This made 2016 me have an aneurysm, and seven years later, I still find this incredibly dumb. What's the point of having the match if you don't want to pin one of the people in it. It makes no sense.
Psycho Clown, instead, challenges Villano IV to enter the ring. The two trade slaps while Villano V distracts both referees. This is where it's clear the respect only goes one way, as Villano IV kicks Psycho Clown low. Considering Psycho Clown had used a baking sheet and a strap earlier in the match, I'm not really sure why they had to distract the referee for that, but I really just want this to end, so I digress. Villano IV makes the cover, gets the three, and the win for family honor. That final pin was the only one Pepi Casas counted, by the way.

The Verdict

Pretty much as bad as I remembered. Granted, I think I was a bit harsh, as the match isn't outright horrible when Los Psycho Circus is on the offensive, but everything else is not good. All the Villanos were very obviously past their prime, and it showed in how little they were able to do. It doesn't help that they dominated a portion of this match despite being so limited at this point. The ending with Psycho Clown showing respect sounds good on paper, but when you remember things like him already using weapons, it doesn't make any sense. Add all that to the fact that this went way too long. With participants as worn down as the Villanos, this had zero business going 11 minutes. A match half that long might have been pushing it, even.
As for a re-ranking, I still don't think this is worse than any of the matches that were below it on the list right now. If anything, re-watching this match, seeing that there were some parts I thought weren't the worst, and looking at what was ahead of it on the list, just made me realize how much I despised that Ultimate Warrior-Goldust match from In Your House: Good Friends, Better Enemies. There's legitimately, and intentionally, nothing happening in that match. There's not a lot happening in this match, but it's more than that one.

Thanks for reading! I'm interested to see what everyone thinks of this. I'm open to doing more re-reviews in the future if there's an interest from everyone. Probably not incredibly often (maybe every time I hit a milestone on the Worst in the World) and not for all of them, but I think it's interesting to see how my opinions have changed. If there are any matches from the list that you'd like to see re-reviewed, let me know in the comments. Tomorrow, I'll have a brand new edition of the Worst in the World for you, covering yet another chapter in the Hulk Hogan-Randy Savage feud over the years. Stay tuned.

  1. I don’t have a request, but if someone were to ever look at an old Coliseum VHS tape and decide one match would qualify for the list, would you consider it? thehistoryofwwe.com website is a great historical resource for house show and SuperStars and Wrestling Challenge taping results and they indicate any matches recorded for later release on VHS and or DVD.

    1. I think some of these are already requested (Bella vs AJ, and I think I added Kelly Kelly & Mike Knox vs Ariel & Kevin Thorn) but I'll add these new ones to the list. The Finlay & Little Bastard/Boogeyman & Little Boogeyman is one I'll end up re-covering. Thanks for the suggestions!

  4. ECW Wrestlepalooza 1998 has to be the weakest ever ECW major show.

Justin Credible vs. Mikey Whipwreck (meaningless spotfest with random run-ins)
Storm and Candido vs. Axl and Mahoney (hardcore guys no-selling everything)
Bam Bam Bigelow vs. New Jack (every bit as bad as you'd expect)
Dudley Boyz vs. Dreamer and Sandman ("this is hard to watch", says Joey Styles, not even in character)
RVD vs. Sabu (how can an RVD/Sabu match be boring? Like this! A meaningless spot, then a few minutes of rest hold, then another meaningless spot, repeat until time limit draw)
Shane Douglas vs. Al Snow (Snow fighting off Triple Threat members and getting 0 offence on Douglas)

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
