Worst in the World: The Imitation Game: The Times The Undertaker and Kane Wrestled Themselves

I mean...do I even need to elaborate? Yes, in the crazy world of the WWE, the company has booked a wrestler to face off with an imposter version of themselves multiple times. Today, I'll be looking at two of those instances, the first featuring The Undertaker, and the second featuring Kane. I'd considered adding a third imposter showdown, the Sin Cara vs Sin Cara match from Hell in a Cell 2011, but to my surprise, that match has fairly solid reviews. I'll cover it if anyone wants me to, but for now, I'm passing. So, let's take a look at these imposter showdowns.

Undertaker vs Undertaker

At the 1994 Royal Rumble, The Undertaker was defeated by Yokozuna in a Casket match, thanks to assistance from 9 other wrestlers. As everyone wheeled the casket to the back, smoke poured out of the casket as Taker appeared on the big screen, saying he'd be reborn and vowing to return. He then turned into a ghost (one that looked a lot like Marty Jannetty) and floated away.
In reality, Taker had a back injury and needed time off. In the meantime, we'd get testimonials from random people claiming to have seen Taker. Fast forward to May that same year, when Ted DiBiase, who had introduced Taker to the WWF back in 1990 as part of his Survivor Series team, announced that he had found Taker and, through the power of money, that he had joined the Million Dollar Corporation.
Taker's manager Paul Bearer refuted this claim, but during an edition of Shawn Michael's Heartbreak Hotel, DiBiase brought out Taker. Siding with DiBiase and the dollar, Taker turned his back on Bearer. Bearer would then claim that DiBiase's Taker was a fraud, and that he had found the real Undertaker. This sets up the match, Undertaker vs Undertaker in the main event of SummerSlam 1994. All in all, it's an incredibly silly angle that, along with the outrageous build, is remembered for the flat match it led to. Dave Meltzer gave it a negative one-star rating, the lowest of the show, and currently sits at a 1.83 out of 10 on Cagematch.net. If there's one positive that came out of this match, it's that the WWF actually got Leslie Nielsen to channel Frank Drebin for several segments to solve this double-taker mystery. You'll never get any complaints from me for adding some Police Squad/Naked Gun humor. Let's take a look.
DiBiase is out first, proclaiming that his Undertaker is the one and only, which brings out his Taker. This Taker, who's donning the grey tie, gloves, and boot covers Taker debuted with in 1990, is portrayed by Brian Lee. Lee's one of those big guys who was ever-present throughout the 90s and early 2000s, bouncing around the major American promotions. Lee's probably best known as Chainz from the Disciples of Apocolypse in the WWF. He was good friends with the real Undertaker, and looking enough like him got him this gig.
Howard Finkel undercuts DiBiase, announcing Bearer's Undertaker as the one and only. Bearer's out first, with two druids wheeling the casket from the Royal Rumble behind him. The druids guide the casket down to the ring and open the lid, revealing...
...smoke. Bearer reaches into the casket and pulls out a giant urn.
Bearer brings the urn into the ring and opens the lid, which releases a beam of light. Lights flash and thunder hits as the gong sounds again. This brings out the real Undertaker, dressed exactly the same as DiBiase's Undertaker only with purple accessories. Bearer & DiBiase remove their respective Undertaker's jackets, ties, and hats before the bell rings. Since we're on to the match, just for the sake of clarity, I'll be referring to the real Undertaker as simply "Taker" while referring to the fake as his commonly used nickname, "The Underfaker."
The two Takers go face to face in the middle of the ring, showing that the real Taker is noticeably taller than the Underfaker.
Underfaker throws the first punch, but Taker catches it and kicks him in the gut. Taker follows up with a palm thrust and whips Underfaker across the ring. Taker goes for a clothesline, but Underfaker ducks it and goes for a shoulder block. Taker doesn't budge. The Underfaker punches Taker twice and goes for an Irish whip, but Taker reverses it. After a drop-down and a leapfrog, Taker hits a big boot followed by a palm strike, sending Underfaker out of the ring. DiBiase hops on the apron, distracting Taker as Underfaker walks towards Bearer. Taker eventually goes after Underfaker, reaching over the ropes and grabbing him by the hair. Taker drags Underfaker onto the apron, headbutting him before suplexing him back into the ring.
The Underfaker sits up, so Taker quickly kicks him before grabbing him by the throat. Taker tosses Underfaker over the top rope and out of the ring, quickly following him out and slamming his head into the ring apron. Taker slides back in the ring and drags Underfaker back onto the apron, but Underfaker turns the tables by yanking Taker's head into the top rope. The Underfaker punches away at Taker before grabbing a wrist lock and going to the top rope for Old School. Taker cuts him off, however, grabbing him by the throat and throwing him down to the mat. Underfaker sits up again, so Taker kicks him in the gut, grabs a wristlock, and climbs to the top rope. The real Taker successfully hits Old School before slamming Underfaker's head into the top turnbuckle.
After another gut kick, Taker tries to whip Underfaker into the ropes. The Underfaker reverses it, however, and lifts Taker up when he rebounds back, dropping him across the top rope with a Stun Gun. The Taker's trade blows before Underfaker hits a clothesline. Taker stays up, but a second clothesline from Underfaker knocks him down. The Underfaker tries to follow up with an elbow drop, but Taker rolls out of the way. Taker follows up with a clothesline before striking Underfaker into the ropes. Taker charges in for a clothesline, but Underfaker ducks, sending Taker tumbling over the top rope and out of the ring. Vince McMahon on commentary says the crowd is "stunned" and "virtually silent", which is the most positive way to say that the crowd is pretty much dead.
The Underfaker follows Taker out and throws him into the ring post. The Underfaker punches Taker across ringside, where he slams Taker's head into the steel steps. The Underfaker crawls back in the ring, with Taker following soon after. The Underfaker punches Taker in the corner, knocking him to the ground. The Underfaker switches to kicks before Taker gets back to his feet, so Underfaker goes back to the punches. Taker fires back with a punch and goes for a clothesline off an Irish whip, but Underfaker ducks it and quickly hits a Chokeslam. After Underfaker just kind of...stands over him for a bit, he goes down to make the cover, but Taker sits up. The Underfaker quickly hits a Tombstone Piledriver and again, just kind of stands over him for a while before going for the pin, but Taker sits up again.
The Underfaker goes for a second Tombstone, but Taker reverses it and hits a leaping Tombstone. Not done, Taker picks Underfaker up and hits a second Tombstone, this time just a standard one. Takrer finally finishes the imposter off, picking the Underfaker up for a third and final Tombstone before making the cover for the three and the win. DiBiase quickly runs away as the druids return to ringside. They open the casket lid, allowing Taker to dump the imposter in. The druids wheel the casket away as Taker & Bearer celebrate in the ring.

The Verdict

An absolute drag. Outside of the finish, there is pretty much nothing worth getting excited over. In between the few actual spots there are, it's all just slow brawling. It's bad, and it's not worth watching.

Kane vs Kane

Despite Taker vs Taker being a complete bore, WWE went back to the imposter well almost twelve years later. In 2006, Kane began being haunted by the date May 19th. A voice would come over the arenas' speakers saying the date, and he'd attack anyone who mentioned the date. Kane would reveal that May 19th was the day family was killed in a fire. May 19th also happened to be the date that See No Evil, the not-very-good but still relatively fun slasher film starring Kane was releasing, but I'm sure that was a coincidence. This culminated in Kane being attacked by...Kane. This Kane, who donned Kane's original attire and mask, was then-Deep South Wrestling prospect Drew Hankinson. Hankinson had been in Deep South (a brief WWE developmental territory before the company shifted entirely to Oho Valley Wrestling in 2007) since 2005 as "The Freakin' Deacon" before donning the mask, and is better known as Luke/Doc Gallows, the straight edge follower of CM Punk turned good brother. The two Kanes would face off at Vengeance that year, and like the two Takers' match, it was not well received. Dave Meltzer gave it just half a star, while it currently sits at a 2.90 on Cagematch. Let's take a look.
The two Kanes go face-to-face in the middle of the ring. Imposter Kane tries to set off his ring post fire, but Kane cuts him off with punches. Kane knocks Imposter Kane down to the mat with a clothesline, but the Imposter quickly sits back. Kane quickly uppercuts him and clotheslines him out of the ring, with Imposter Kane landing on his feet. Imposter Kane drags the real Kane out of the ring before clotheslining him to the ground. Imposter Kane rolls Kane back in the ring, where he chokes him in the corner.
The referee forces Imposter Kane to break the choke, allowing Kane to fire back with a punch. The two trade blows before Kane puts the Imposter in a headlock. Imposter Kane is able to power out of it, but the real Kane fires back with a shoulder block, knocking the Imposter down. Kane tries to unmask Imposter Kane, but the Imposter escapes into the ropes, forcing Kane to break. Kane threatens the referee for making him break, allowing Imposter Kane to hit a sidewalk slam. Imposter Kane beats down Kane with the ground and pound before choking him. Sticking with the chokes, Imposter Kane then steps on Kane's neck before choking him against ropes. Imposter Kane follows up with a suplex and falling fist drop before clawing at Kane's face.
Kane fires back with punches and tries to whip Imposter Kane into the corner, but the Imposter reverses it and sends Kane into the corner. The Imposter charges in, but Kane catches him with a boot to the face. Kane charges at him, but Imposter Kane catches him with a scoop slam, which gets a two count. Imposter Kane beats down Kane with punches before locking in a chin lock. The Imposter switches to a headlock, but Kane manages to fight to his feet and ram him into the corner. Kane charges at Imposter Kane, but the Imposter catches him with a back elbow. Imposter Kane goes for a Chokeslam, but Kane responds by sticking his thumb in the Imposter's eye. Kane goes for an Irish whip, but Imposter Kane reverses it and sends Kane into the ropes. Imposter Kane goes for a back body drop, but Kane counters with a jumping DDT.
Kane follows up with a powerslam before tossing Imposter Kane into the corner. Kane strikes away at the Imposter before hitting two corner avalanches. Kane follows up with a sidewalk slam and goes for a Chokeslam, but the Imposter Kane ducks it. Imposter Kane goes for a Chokeslam of his own, but Kane blocks it and uppercuts him. Kane goes for an Irish whip, but Imposter Kane reverses it and catches Kane with a big boot when he bounces back. Imposter Kane goes to the top rope, but Kane uppercuts him to stop him.
Kane hits either the craziest overhead belly-to-belly superplex or the ugliest superplex you'll ever see.
Kane goes for the Chokeslam. Imposter Kane fights out of it with elbows and hits the ropes, but Kane floors him with a big boot. Kane goes to the top rope and goes for the flying clothesline, but Imposter Kane catches him by the throat, hits the Chokeslam, and gets the three. Yeah, Imposter Kane beat the real Kane. The Imposter Kane leaves, and the next night on Raw, the real Kane beats him up, takes his mask (without showing who he is), tosses him out a door, and Imposter Kane is never seen again...what was the point of this?

The Verdict

Significantly better than the Taker vs Taker match, I actually didn't think this was all that bad. Enough actual wrestling to break up the down points, the down points aren't that long. It's not all that good, but it's perfectly serviceable.

  1. Hey man just so you know you forgot to change Summerslam 1994 to Vengeance 2006 on the Kane vs Kane title.

For match requests I got some bad matches from Invasion 2001 despite it being a relatively good show!

    Earl Hebner vs Nick Patrick
APA vs Sean O Haire/Chuck Palumbo
    Raven vs William Regal
    Chris Kanyon/Hugh Morrus/Shawn Stasiak vs Big Show/Billy Gunn/Albert
Lita/Trish Stratus vs Stacey Keibler/Torrie Wilson

  2. NWA Samhain didn't even have the decency to have any worst-of-all-time matches like the previous NWA majors had... I miss Tyrus. There's still some poor content in there.

    Brady Pierce vs. Rush Freeman
The Southern 6 vs. the Headbangers
    Jax Dane vs. Blake Troop
Violent J and Brothers of Funstruction vs. Vampiro and La Rebelion
Blunt Force Trauma vs. Mike Knox and Trevor Murdoch

    1. I'll add them to the list. Yeah, now that Tyrus is retired, it definitely seems like we're not gonna many genuine disasters from the NWA anymore. Thanks for the suggestions!

  3. Here's a couple of bad matches from Royal Rumble 2004, a dissapointingly short cruiserweight title match between Rey Mysterio/Jamie Noble and an pretty bad WWE Title match that killed Hardcore Holly's main event push as he fought Brock Lesnar.

  4. If Teddy Long was the WWF’s authority figure in 1994, could you imagine telling the fake Undertaker that he was going to book him in a one-on-one match….”with the UNDERTAKER, PLAYAH!”

  5. I remember sin cara vs. sin cara being a stinker but it's been years since I've watched it. From what I remember it was just them doing each others moves to each other and the crowd chanting BORING

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Worst in the World: The Reina de Reinas Championship Four-Way-AAA Triplemanía XXV

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
