Worst in the World: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Deathmatch-AEW Dynamite: Fight for the Fallen 2023 (Night 1)

The post you're about to read is an account of a tragedy that befell a group of eight wrestlers, in particular Jeff Hardy and his opponent Jeff Jarrett. It is all the more tragic that they were legends. But even having wrestled very, very many matches, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic Fight for the Fallen became a nightmare.
The events of that show were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre matches in the annals of wrestling history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre...Deathmatch.
Yeah, this one did not take long to get requested. In fact, it joins the very rare club of matches that got requested within 24 hours of it actually happening. And if there was ever a better time, it would be during Halloween month. So yeah, Jeff Hardy vs Jeff Jarrett in the first-ever "Texas Chain Saw Massacre Deathmatch" from Day 1 of Fight for the Fallen (which was split up over three days across AEW's weekly shows, with Day 1 being an episode of Dynamite.) There isn't really a feud that set this match up, but the Hardys did a run-in during a Trios match between the Elite and Jarrett, Jay Lethal, and Satnam Singh to counter the interference from Karen Jarrett and Sonjay Dutt (also part of Jarrett's group that really needs a team name.) The "Texas Chain Saw Massacre" part comes from a sponsorship deal with the very fun Texas Chain Saw Massacre video game that came out two days after this episode of Dynamite. AEW reportedly got paid $100,000 for having this match, which, as Tony Khan stated, was donated to the Maui Food Bank to help people affected by the Maui wildfires, which is nice. People really love the game. People did not, however, love the match, as it currently sits at a 2.28 on Cagematch.net, and is currently the #6 worst-rated match of 2023 (of eligible matches) on the site. Let's take a look.
Jeff Hardy's out first, rocking a mask of a human face over his own Leatherface-style.
Hardy then hops the barricade and heads backstage, so I have no idea why he made an entrance if the match is actually in the back. Hardy makes his way to an area decorated with a single wall covered in weapons and doused in red lighting.
Great, Virtual Boy lighting, I hate it. This is meant to resemble the various "Leatherface Lairs" in the video game. The wall of weapons distracts Hardy long enough for Jeff Jarrett to attack him from behind, hitting him with what I think are Halloween store-bone decorations. In fairness, bones tied together are also a thing from the game. The bell rings as Hardy fights back, knocking the bones out of Jarrett's hand before hitting him with it. 15 seconds in and we already get interference, as Jarrett's wife Karen runs over and hits Hardy in the back. Jarrett tries to capitalize by whipping Hardy into the wall, but Hardy reverses it and sends Jarrett into the wall.
Hardy's not phased by Karen hitting him with the bones, as he grabs a crutch and hits Jarrett across the back. This is broken up by Satnam Singh, who's dressed in overalls because the Sawyer family from Texas Chainsaw are Southern and hillbillies are Southern, I guess. Singh grabs Hardy by the throat, lifting him in the air and pinning him against the wall. This is broken up by Matt Hardy, Isiah Kassidy, and Ethan Page, as Kassidy hits Singh across the back with a chair before all three men him down. That makes five people who have interfered in this match so far. We're not even a minute in.
Kassidy & Page each get a punch in Jarrett before Karen runs over to protect him. As she does, Matt Hardy dumps a bucket of blood over them.
Or, as Excalibur and Tazz call it on commentary "I don't know what the hell that could be." Are you telling me Jon Moxley can bleed 1-2 times a week on TV but you can't call something that is obviously supposed to be blood "blood?" Jeff Hardy follows up this bloodbath by dropkicking Jarrett. Matt Hardy, Kassidy, and Page toss Singh down a dark alley, prompting the Jarrett's to retreat there with him. Hardy lands one more crutch shot before it goes to a picture-in-picture commercial break...
Here's where I ran into a problem. I recently switched to Hulu Live, which is where I'm watching this. Hulu did not include the picture-in-picture portion of this match, it just went to their own commercials. I'm assuming this has something to do with the different advertisers between AEW's live broadcasts and Hulu's own advertisers, but alas, there is a noticeable portion of this match I just couldn't watch. I went looking for it on other sites, but I was out of luck. Unfortunately, I'm just gonna have to jump ahead.
What I do know happened during the break was EVEN MORE INTERFERENCE, as Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt have joined the fight. Jarrett, Lethal, Dutt, Matt Hardy, Kassidy, and Page are all brawling by a bunch of crates. This is broken up by Jeff Hardy running over and diving off the crates, knocking everyone down. Jeff Hardy throws Jarrett into crates before dragging him through curtains, popping out by the announce table. Jeff Hardy throws Jarrett into the announce table before hitting a snapmare and a dropkick. Jeff Hardy follows up with an elbow drop as the various extras file out and brawl on the stage. Jeff Hardy begins choking Jarrett with a t-shirt, dragging him down the ramp before tossing him into the barricade. Meanwhile, Kassidy hits Lethal across the back with a trash can lid, only for Karen to hop on his back. There's also fog pouring out from under the ring:
I don't know why and it is never addressed.
Jeff Hardy grabs a chair and hits Jarrett, causing him to retreat into the ring, which is full of an assortment of weapons. Jeff Hardy enters the ring, along with his brother Matt, Kassidy, and Page. Jeff Hardy beats down Jarrett with a kendo stick before Matt, Kassidy, and Page get shots in, with Page hitting Jarrett with a chair. Jeff Hardy hits a headbutt before Matt, Kassidy, and Page set up a table. Kassidy gets some shots in before Jeff Hardy hits a Twist of Fate, causing Jarrett to lay across the table. Jeff Hardy goes to the top rope as Lethal & Dutt drag Matt, Kassidy, and Page out of the ring. They all brawl at ringside as Jeff Hardy hits the Swanton Bomb, putting Jarrett through the table. Jeff Hardy makes the cover, only for Lethal to dive in and break up the pin.
Lethal goes to hit Jeff Hardy with a belt, only for Kassidy to run in and stop him. Lethal hits him with a Lethal Combination (a backbreaker followed by an STO) for his troubles. Page runs in and floors Lethal with a shoulder block. He tries to follow up with the Ego's Edge (the Razor's Edge), but Dutt runs in a low blows him. Lethal is saved for about five seconds before Matt Hardy runs in and hits him with the Twist of Fate. Matt Hardy tries to do the same to Dutt, only for Karen to run in and low-blow him. Jeff Jarrett grabs his guitar and tries to hit Jeff Hardy, only for Hardy to kick him, causing him to drop it. Jeff Hardy grabs the guitar and smashes it over Jarrett's head. But wait, we've got one more run-in...
IT'S FUCKING LEATHERFACE. Yep, he's canon in AEW now and you cannot tell me otherwise. Also, funny enough, this is not the first time someone has donned the Leatherface get-up in wrestling. Most notably, former WWF wrestler Corporal Kirchner had a career resurgence in Japan wrestling as Leatherface. This had also been teased, as Jarrett said in the promo video for the match that Leatherface might show up. As for who donned the face mask-mask here, multiple news sites have stated it was frequent AEW Dark wrestler Dean Alexander, while Matt Hardy said on his podcast that it was none other than AEW President Tony Khan. If the latter is true and Tony Khan actually booked himself to be Leatherface...I don't blame him, I'd probably have done the same thing if I were him.
Leatherface walks down to the ring, swinging his chainsaw around before kicking Dutt. He then chases Karen up the ramp as lights flash. He does not do Leatherface's little chainsaw dance from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, so that's a bummer. Back in the ring, Satnam Singh is back, so he's basically done two run-ins in this match. He tries to chokeslam Jeff Hardy, but Hardy slips out. He goes for the Twist of Fate, only for Lethal to run in and smash him in the back of the head with a hammer, Leatherface-style. Singh follows up with a chokeslam before Lethal drags Jarrett over Hardy. Referee Bryce Remsburg counts the three, giving Jarrett the win. Remsburg hands Jarrett a custom Texas Chainsaw Massacre title belt to close out the segment.
I'd say this was the worst thing to come from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, but I've seen The Next Generation, and I'm not about to lie to you.

The Verdict

I really wanted to like this match. I love horror movies, the first two Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, and the game, and I'm all for over-the-top, fun wrestling. But man, this is not that. It's just a bunch of brawling with weapons and an obscene amount of interference to fill in the gaps. It's just absolute chaos. Not World War 3 levels of chaos, but still too chaotic to be enjoyable. Genuinely, I have no idea why this wasn't just an eight-man tag match with everyone involved if that's what the match was going to devolve into anyway.
I've seen a lot of people compare this to the Zombie Lumberjack match from WrestleMania Backlash a few years back, and I get that (they're both advertisements disguised as wrestling matches) but in all honesty, the problem with this match is the exact opposite of the Zombie Lumberjack match. The Zombie Lumberjack match was a perfectly fine match that got hampered by the excessive gimmick the sponsorship caused. The Texas Chainsaw gimmick doesn't really affect the match at all, it would be a bad match regardless of the gimmick. Again, a "Texas Chain Saw Massacre Deathmatch" sounds right up my alley, but this is just not good.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. I'll have another horror-themed post next Sunday, but on Saturday, since I've hit 300 entries in the Worst in the World, I thought this would be a good time to do something I've had planned for a while and revisit a match I've covered already, as semi-requested. So on Saturday, I'll be taking a second look at the infamous Los Villanos vs Los Psycho Circus match from Triplemanía XXIII. Stay tuned...

  1. I don't mind wrestling matches having a lot of wackiness in them heck the Firefly Inferno match is one of my favorites despite the silliness of it but this wasn't it way too many interferences, mindless brawling, and the lack of build up to it hurt the quality of said match. While AEW is capable of having strong in ring action I do think what hurts the product most of the time is the lack of storytelling which only few wrestlers get The Elite/MJF/Jericho/Danielson being good examples. Great analysis as always!

Remember that time a popular wrestling faction that was on the rise got a PPV in their name but as entertaining they were on TV the PPV itself was anything but entertaining!

Los Boricuas vs Disciples of the Apocalypse
    Butterbean vs Marc Mero
New Age Outlaws vs Legion of Doom
    Undertaker vs Jeff Jarrett

  2. Here’s a match that aired on Saturday Night’s Main Event if you ever wanted to do an Oktoberfest themed induction for a little twist instead of strictly spooky stuff. The show revolved around corny skits with wrestlers wearing Lederhosen, Alfred Hayes getting drunk and the inevitable food fight.

Hulk Hogan and Tugboat vs Rhythm & Blues - Saturday Night’s Main Event - aired October 13, 1990

  3. Here's one of the final matches in the British Bulldog's career and it's the match where he got planted on dog poop (an embarrassing way to end a pretty memorable in ring career).

Rock N Sock Connection vs Val Venis/British Bulldog (Raw Oct 11 1999)

  4. Sad to say I think I missed the window for "reviewed within 24 hours" for NJPW Destruction in Ryogoku but there's definitely a couple of standout matches there:

Tanga Loa vs. Chase Owens (self-explanatory)
SANADA vs. EVIL (maybe not a terrible match but 28 minutes of interference and un-NJPW-like silliness)

  5. Who remembers the G1 Supercard, eh? The NJPW half was good... the ROH half was not. Pretty sure this was the moment that ROH's fate was sealed.

    Mayu Iwatani vs. Kelly Klein
Bully Ray, Shane Taylor, Silas Young vs. Flip Gordon, Juice Robinson, Mark Haskins

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
