Worst in the World: The Undertaker vs Kane: A Classic Rivalry With Bad Matches

The Undertaker vs Kane. When Kane debuted at Badd Blood 1997 to cost his brother The Undertaker a Hell in a Cell match against Shawn Michaels, it began a rivalry that would span 13 years, and multiple eras of wrestling. It was a rivalry that led to an iconic tag team in the Brothers of Destruction and saw both men involved join the WWE Hall of Fame. It was a rivalry that spanned multiple WrestleManias. It was also a rivalry that, pretty consistently, resulted in bad wrestling matches.

I've said this before, but The Undertaker vs Kane's iconic rivalry tends to overshadow the fact that the matches usually aren't good. There have obviously been pretty solid matches between the two, most notably their match at WrestleMania XIV and the first Inferno match, but that's about it. Everything else has either been unremarkable or, for the topic of this post, bad. I've already looked at one of their worst matches from Judgement Day 1998, and I've got eight more for you today. Before I start, this post will only look at singles matches between The Undertaker and Kane. I've got multi-man matches featuring Taker and Kane also on my list, but those will be covered another time. For now, let's get into this.

Match #1: The Casket Match

We start our octuple feature at the October 19th, 1998 episode of Monday Night Raw. In between Kane's debut and now, he & Taker have feuded, then teamed up as the Brothers of Destruction to feud with Steve Austin, and have already broken up and started feuding again following their Judgement Day match, during which Paul Bearer sided with Taker, the night prior. On this Raw, Taker revealed that he was the one who set the fire that burned Kane. Kane responded by wheeling out a casket and, through his electrolarynx, challenged Taker to a casket match. It's 4:40, making it too short to get a rating on Cagematch.net, but it did earn a negative two-star rating from Dave Meltzer, which is tied for the lowest of both men's careers with their infamous tag match with Kronik. Let's take a look.

Immediate brawl in the corner to start the match, as Kane punches & kicks away at Taker. Taker retreats into another corner, where Kane continues punching him before choking him. Kane whips Taker to the opposite corner and charges in, but Taker catches him with a back elbow. Taker kicks away at Kane's knee before ducking a clothesline and hitting a leaping clothesline. Taker then makes the cover, even though this is a casket match. Taker headbutts Kane before dragging him over to the casket. Taker goes for an Irish whip, but Kane reverses it, sending Taker into the ropes before catching him with a powerslam.

Kane tries to follow up with a backbody drop, but Taker counters with a jumping DDT. Kane gets right back up, prompting Taker to punch away at him. Kane stumbles towards the ropes, as the referees Tim White and Jimmy Korderas open the casket lid. Taker clotheslines Kane out of the ring, with Kane landing on his feet in the casket. Kane quickly yanks Taker under the bottom rope and into the casket. Kane punches away at Taker, knocking him off his feet. Kane stomps on Taker, but Taker regains control with a low blow. Taker follows up with a DDT, and the referees, for some reason, close the lid. I'm not entirely sure why (in kayfabe) they did this. I thought it was to have the match end in a draw or something, but it doesn't. The referees also look confused as to what to do now.

Almost immediately, the casket starts shaking. Eventually, a boot breaks through the side of the casket.

The lid pops open briefly and we see Taker on top, beating down Kane. Taker's body then breaks through the side of the casket as Kane gets back to his feet. Taker keeps control by headbutting Kane, causing him to fall out of the casket. Taker climbs out of the casket as well and onto the ring apron for a double axe handle, but Kane catches him and rams him back into the apron. Kane turns his attention to Paul Bearer, who quickly runs up the ramp. Taker follows them with a chair, smashing Kane across the back. Taker stomps away at Kane before just...leaving. Kane gets up and follows them to the back...and that's the end.

The Verdict

It's pretty fine for the most part, but the ending is very flat. They break the casket a bit (not enough to make it unusable) and then it ends when they just kind of leave. This would've been higher with a better ending, but it's still not going far down the list at all, and it's definitely not deserving of such a harsh star rating.

Match #2: Survivor Series 1998

A month after their casket match, The Undertaker and Kane would face off once again at Survivor Series: Deadly Game. With the WWF Championship still vacant after Taker & Kane's Judgement Day match ended in a double pinfall, Mr. McMahon set up a 14-man tournament to crown a new champion. Both men had gotten a first-round bye, and the winner of this match would move on to face the winner of The Rock vs Ken Shamrock. Once again, this match was not well received, as it earned a DUD (zero stars) rating from Meltzer, and holds a 3.73 rating out of 10 on Cagematch. Let's take a look.

Once again, we get an immediate brawl to start the match, only with Taker gaining the upper hand this time. Taker punches Kane into the corner before whipping him to the opposite corner. Taker charges in, but Kane catches him with a back elbow before tossing him into the corner. Kane punches away at Taker before whipping him into the ropes, catching him with a big boot when he bounces back. Taker gets back to his feet, but Kane quickly clotheslines him out of the ring. Taker lands on his feet, and Kane quickly follows him out.

Kane hits Taker from behind before slamming his head into the ring apron. Kane then slams Taker's head into the barricade before charging at him, but Taker counters and lifts Kane up, dropping him face-first on the barricade. Taker follows up by throwing Kane into the steel steps before tossing him back i the ring. In probably the most shocking moment of the match, Taker hits a standing sidekick before throwing Kane to the corner. Taker strikes away at Kane before going for an Irish whip, but Kane reverses it and hits a powerslam. Kane tries to follow up with an elbow drop but, in a fun spot, Taker sits up to avoid it.

Taker keeps control, striking Kane back into the corner. Taker goes to whip Kane to the opposite corner, but Kane reverses it again. Kane charges in, but Taker catches him with a boot before taking out his knee with a chop block. Taker works the leg, dropping elbows before putting on a leg lock. Taker tries to switch to a spinning toe hold, but Kane kicks him away. Taker is able to keep control, however, by stomping Kane's knee before dragging him back to the corner. Taker kicks away at Kane's knee before choking him in the corner. Referee Jack Doan makes him break, only to run out of the ring when Taker turns his attention to him. Taker slams Kane's head into the corner, but a second attempt is blocked & reversed by Kane.

Taker strikes away at Kane, but Kane is barely phased. Taker tries to whip Kane from one corner to another, but Kane blocks it by holding the top rope. Taker softens Kane up with knees to the gut and goes for the whip again, but the third time is not the charm, as Kane reverses it again and sends Taker into the corner. Kane quickly clotheslines Taker in the corner before leaping over the top rope and onto the apron. Kane climbs to the top rope, diving off and hitting a clothesline. Kane makes the cover, but Taker kicks out. The two trade blows, with Kane getting the better of the exchange. Kane whips Taker into the ropes and goes for a clothesline, but Taker ducks. Taker goes for the Chokeslam, only for Kane to also grab him for a Chokeslam of his own. Kane gets the better of the exchange, however, breaking Taker's grip and hitting the Chokeslam.

Kane calls for the Tombstone Piledriver, only for Paul Bearer to hop up on the apron and distract him. Kane takes a shot at Bearer, who quickly hops off the apron. The distraction, however, allows Taker to pick Kane up for a Tombstone of his own. Taker makes the cover as Bearer holds Kane's leg down. Jack Doan counts the three, giving Taker the win.

The Verdict

Definitely better than its ratings suggest. It's mostly brawling, but there are still enough actual wrestling moves and spots to provide some substance. Definitely going towards the top of the list.

Match #3: The Other Inferno Match

We're gonna jump forward a few months for our third match, bringing us to the February 22nd, 1999 episode of Monday Night Raw, which is actually the show's 300th episode. Taker & Kane are still at odds, with Kane costing Taker his Buried Alive match with Steve Austin at Rock Bottom. This put him at odds with The Corporation, who had Kane committed to an insane asylum. Kane would return as part of The Corporation to stay out of the asylum. At the same time, Taker would form the Ministry of Darkness, targeting Mr. McMahon and The Corporation. This prompted McMahon to set up Taker vs Kane in the second Inferno match. The first Inferno match is a solid match with an iconic stipulation, with the ring surrounded by fire and the winner being the first man to set their opponent on fire. The second Inferno match...also happened. It doesn't have a terrible rating, as it currently sits at a 4.75 on Cagematch, but because it's considered a noticeable downgrade from the first one (that match has a 6.44 on Cagematch), I thought I'd give it a look.

Mr. McMahon is on commentary for this match. Kane goes for a clothesline before the bell rings, and before the flames are up, but Taker ducks it and lays into Kane with punches. Taker beats Kane into the corner before whipping him to the opposite corner, during which the ring crew lights the flames and surrounds the ring. Taker follows up by splashing Kane in the corner before grabbing him by the wrist. Taker climbs to the top rope for Old School, jumping off and knocking Kane to the ground as the flames shoot up. Taker tries to drag Kane over into the flames, but Kane stays out of the fire. Kane fights back with back elbows, but Taker keeps control with a punch. Taker whips Kane into the corner and goes for a clothesline, but Kane catches him with another back elbow.

Kane follows up with a big boot, causing Taker to stumble back. Kane whips Taker towards the ropes, but Taker reverses it and goes for a backbody drop. Kane counters it with a kick to the face, but Taker keeps control with a kick to the gut. Taker goes for an Irish whip of his own, but Kane reverses it and hits a powerslam. Kane chokes Taker against the mat before throwing his head into the top turnbuckle. Kane tries to shove Taker into the fire, but Taker stays unfried. Kane keeps control with a knee to the gut before striking away at Taker. Taker fires back with punches before going for a suplex, but Kane blocks it and hits a suplex of his own.

Suddenly, Paul Bearer comes down to ringside, a present for Mr. McMahon in his hands. Back in the ring, Kane stays on the offensive, striking away at Taker before whipping him into the corner hard. Kane tries to push Taker into the flames, but Taker avoids it, reaching under the ring skirt as he does. Taker pulls out a wrench, hitting Kane twice as Vince opens the present at commentary. Inside is a teddy bear, prompting an angry Vince to throw down his headset and leave the commentary table.

Back in the ring, Taker has Kane in a head crank before throwing him into the corner. Vince is walking around ringside, trying to question Bearer.

Taker whips Kane to the opposite corner and charges in, only for Kane to catch him with a boot. Kane follows up with a clothesline before tossing Taker over the top rope and out of the ring, just missing the flames. Kane quickly goes to the top rope and dives at Taker, only for Taker to sidestep him and send him into the announce table. Kane hits the table hard, as it slides back. Taker throws Kane into the barricade before throwing the announce table cover at him. Taker tries to whip Kane into the ring steps, but Kane reverses it and sends him into the steps. Kane tries to follow up with a big boot, only for Taker to catch his foot. Taker tosses his foot into the flames, catching it on fire and giving the win to Taker. Taker walks over to Vince and rips the teddy bear from his hands. Taker holds the teddy bear's head over the flames, catching it on fire before tossing it onto the ramp.

The Verdict

It gets overshadowed by the angle that's taking place at the same time, but this is overall fine. Kind of the same as their Survivor Series match, just with a different gimmick and a clean finish. It's going around that same spot.

Match #4: SummerSlam 2000

We're taking another jump for our fourth match, this time going forward about a year and a half to SummerSlam 2000. After only really crossing paths in multi-man matches for 18 months, the Brothers of Destruction reunited for, quite literally, about two months before they split again. Taker was being attacked by Chris Benoit & Shane McMahon when Kane made the save. However, Kane instead attacked Taker, chokeslamming him through the ring. Why? Because he's a monster...that's what Kane said. This set up another chapter in the Undertaker-Kane story, with the now-American Badass Undertaker taking on Kane at SummerSlam. Unfortunately, this continued the streak of poorly received matches between the two, as it earned just half a star from Dave Meltzer, and holds a 3.03 rating on Cagematch, the lowest of any match featuring the two. Let's take a look.

Forget brawling right as they get in the ring, Taker charges Kane during his entrance to brawl on the ramp. The bell rings as Taker lays into Kane with punches. Kane fights back with punches of his own, but Taker keeps control, punching Kane until he walks back down to ringside. Taker throws Kane into the ring post before sliding into the ring. Taker drags Kane onto the ring apron and tries to rip off his mask, only for Taker to yank his head down onto the top rope. Kane slides in the ring and beats down Taker in the corner. Kane stomps Taker down before leaving the ring grabbing a chair. Kane gets back in the ring and tries to hit Taker, but catches him with a ton of punches to the gut, causing Kane to drop the chair.

Taker grabs the chair and hits Kane across the back. This is not a no-DQ match, but according to Jim Ross on commentary, referee Jack Doan said he was just going to let them "go at it", so I don't know. Taker beats down Kane before ripping part of his mask. Kane slides out of the ring, prompting Taker to follow him out. Kane gains the upper hand, however, when he throws Taker into ring steps that are lying against the barricade (I think they move them for Taker's motorcycle entrance.) Kane does it a few more times before grabbing another set of stairs. Kane tries to ram Taker with the stairs, but Taker ducks, causing Kane to crash into the ring post.

Taker grabs the stairs and just chucks them at Kane, busting him open. Taker punches away at Kane before tossing him back in the ring. Taker tries to remove the mask again, but Kane catches him with a low blow. Kane punches away at Taker, only for Taker to fire back with a Spear. Taker beats down Kane on the mat before again going for the mask. Kane keeps the mask, but Taker keeps control with punches. Both men go for simultaneous Chokeslams, only for Taker to kick Kane low. Taker slams Kane down before ripping off his mask. And then the match ends. I don't mean Taker pins Kane, I mean Kane leaves the ring and Taker's music hits. The match just stopped happening.

The Verdict

It's not as bad as the Judgement Day match, but this is still pretty mediocre. Just a ton of brawling with nothing in between. The other matches I've covered so far also have a ton of brawling, but at least those ones have some actual wrestling spots. Add on the fact that it has a confusing non-finish, and this is just not an enjoyable match.

We're halfway done as we jump forward to 2004. A now-unmasked Kane had interfered in another Buried Alive match, this time between Taker and Mr. McMahon at Survivor Series 2003, and helped Vince bury Taker. Why? Because Taker wasn't a monster anymore...that's what Kane said. Very linear motivations for Kane. During the 2004 Royal Rumble match, The Undertaker's Deadman theme played, distracting Kane and allowing him to be eliminated from the match. Kane would experience a ton of supernatural events before, eventually, the match was set for WrestleMania XX, with it all but certain the American Badass was gone, and The Deadman was back. Throughout all of Taker's WrestleMania matches, this is one that definitely...happened. It got a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, and sits at 5.64 on Cagematch. Let's take a look.

Following Kane's entrance, the lights go out. We hear a loud "OH YESSSSSSSSSSS." Paul Bearer, urn in hand, walks out with torch-bearing druids behind him. The gong hits, and outcomes The Undertaker, the Deadman once again. Kane's in disbelief as the bell rings. The match starts with Taker staring down Kane for a good 50 seconds. Kane cautiously reaches out to Taker, who quickly begins striking away at him. Taker forces Kane into the ropes as he punches him, and chases referee Brian Hebner out of the ring when he tries to count him out. Taker whips Kane across the ring and sets up for a Chokeslam, but Kane slips out of the ring to avoid it.

Taker follows Kane out, where Kane takes control with punches. Kane tries to whip Taker into the ring apron, but Taker reverses it and sends Kane into the apron. Taker lays Kane across the apron, where he drops an elbow before hitting his apron leg drop. Back in the ring, Taker whips Kane into the corner and hits a body avalanche. Taker follows up with a corner clothesline and goes for the Last Ride, but Kane powers out and backdrops Taker. It looked like Taker was supposed to land on the ropes like a Stun Gun, but Taker came up short and just nicked the ropes.

Kane follows up with a big boot before beating down Taker on the mat. Taker manages to roll over and beat down Kane with the ground & pound, but Kane keeps control with a sidewalk slam when they get to their feet. Kane goes to the top rope and hits a flying clothesline, but Taker kicks out of the following cover. The two trade blows until Kane hits an uppercut and whips Taker into the corner. Kane charges in, but Taker dodges and hits a running big boot. Taker follows up with a leg drop before grabbing Kane by the wrist and climbing to the top for Old School. Kane counters, however, and catches Taker by the throat as he jumps down. Taker starts to fade, only to grab Kane by the throat as well. Taker breaks Kane's grip and goes for the Chokeslams, but Kane fights out with back elbows. Kane re-grabs Taker's throat and hits the Chokeslam.

With Taker down, Kane celebrates, only for Taker to sit up. Taker lays into Kane with punches before going for a backbody drop. Kane counters with a kick, but Taker quickly responds with a right hand. Taker goes for an Irish whip into the ropes, but Kane reverses it. Kane tries to follow up with a clothesline, but Taker ducks it, hits the ropes, and floors Kane with a leaping clothesline. Taker follows up with a Chokeslam and the Tombstone Piledriver for the three, and the win, to make it 12-0 at WrestleMania for The Undertaker.

The Verdict

More of the same from Taker & Kane here; nothing remarkable, but not horrible. A couple of spots, but mostly brawling.

Match #6: Night of Champions 2010

And now, we take our last, and biggest, jump forward to 2010 for the final three matches of this post. These are also the matches I was looking forward to the least. While the previous five matches have all been pretty brief, all clocking in under 8 minutes, these last three matches are all marathons by comparison. Legitimately, these three matches combined are 23 WHOLE MINUTES longer than the first five matches combined. Maybe WWE thought since Taker was having better matches more consistently by 2010 that he could do it with anybody (not saying Kane's bad, he's just not a Shawn Michaels or Kurt Angle-type that can go that long), but this feels a lot like WWE overplaying their hand. Hell, this run is legitimately the end of Taker as a full-time wrestler, as he'd transition to a part-time schedule following Bragging Rights/ So, let's get into this trilogy, starting with Night of Champions.

Three months prior, The Undertaker was found in a "vegetative state" (Taker had suffered multiple legitimate facial & head injuries in a World Heavyweight Championship Fatal 4-Way qualifying match with Rey Mysterio), with Kane vowing to find the man responsible. During that time, Kane won the Money in the Bank contract and cashed in on Mysterio to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Kane claimed Mysterio was behind the attack (Taker had beaten Mysterio in that match, but Mysterio replaced Taker in the Fatal 4-Way because of his "vegetative state" and won the title), while Mysterio pointed the finger at Kane.

Kane would defeat Mysterio in a rematch at SummerSlam. Kane would try to throw Mysterio in a casket after the match, only for Taker to return. This prompted Kane to attack him, revealing him as the attacker. Wanting to destroy Taker once and for all, Kane challenged Taker to a match for the title at Night of Champions, with Taker upping the ante by making it a No Holds Barred match. This match tends to be considered the high point of this trilogy, but it's still considered a letdown, as it earned a one-and-three quarters star rating from Dave Meltzer, and sits at a 5.55 rating on Cagematch. Let's take a look.

They held off brawling before the bell last time, but not today, as Taker rushes Kane in the entranceway as he makes his entrance. The bell rings as Taker lays into Kane with punches, eventually punching him to the ground. Taker continues striking away at Kane on the stage before throwing him off the stage, sending him into a giant pillar set.

Taker hops down, but Kane is able to mount some offense by kicking Taker's knee. Kane takes control, striking Taker and laying him on the ramp. Taker fights back by choking Kane, eventually punching him up onto the ramp. Taker climbs back up onto the ramp and beats down Kane, eventually switching to choking him against the ground. Kane is able to break the choke with a thumb to the eye, which he follows with a boot to the face.

Kane boots Taker down the ramp and tries to throw Taker's head into the barricade, but Taker blocks it and slams Kane's head down instead. Taker goes back to the strikes, beating Kane against the barricade. Taker tries to whip Kane into the steel steps, but Kane reverses it and sends Taker into the steps. Kane stomps away at Taker before slamming his head into the steps. Kane then stomps Taker's head on the steps before throwing him into the ring post. Kane walks over to the timekeeper's area and grabs his title belt before hitting Taker in the gut with it. Kane kicks Taker one more time before rolling him into the ring.

Kane quickly goes to the top rope and hits the flying clothesline. Kane follows up with a leg drop and makes the cover, but Taker kicks out at two. Kane chokes and pulls Taker's hair before punching away at him in the corner. Kane follows up with three corner avalanches, which gets a two count. Kane follows up with a low dropkick before dragging Taker onto the apron. Kane strikes away at Taker until he falls to the ground. Kane slams Taker's head on the announce table before tossing the table's cover at him. Outside of the opening, this has pretty much been just brawling with zero energy.

Kane tries to whip Taker into the stairs, but Taker reverses it and sends Kane into the steps. Taker lands some punches before dragging him up onto the apron. Taker hits his apron leg drop, and after Kane stumbles over to the barricade, Taker clotheslines Kane into the timekeeper's area. Taker the dives over the barricade and onto Kane, where he pounces on him and beats him down. Kane regains control, however, with a chair shot to the gut. Kane headbutts Taker before the two stumble into the crowd. Taker reaches the sound table(?), where he clocks Kane with what I believe is a full can of Mountain Dew.

Taker lands another Mountain Dew shot, but Kane hits an uppercut to keep control. Kane knees Taker's head into the table before striking him back over the barricade to ringside. Kane then hops up on the barricade, staying low like he grossly underestimated how hard it would be to balance on it. Kane eventually dives off and hits a clothesline. Kane throws Taker back in the ring, where he continues punching & stomping Taker. Kane steps on Taker's throat before punching away at him in the corner. Taker stumbles to another corner, where Kane continues punching away at him. It actually gets to the point where referee Mike Chioda steps in to check on Taker. This is so boring.

Why stop now, Kane continues just punching Taker around the ring. Taker fires back, and the two trade blows, with Taker getting the better of the exchange, but Kane cuts him off with a knee to the gut. Kane whips Taker towards the ropes and goes for a clothesline, but Taker ducks and hits the leaping clothesline. Kane stumbles to the corner, where Taker hits a body avalanche before punching away at him. Taker whips Kane across the ring and picks him up for Snake Eyes. Taker drops Kane onto the top turnbuckle before hitting a big boot and a leg drop for the cover, but Kane kicks out. Taker hits the Chokeslam and sets up for the Tombstone Piledriver, but Kane reverses it and hits a Tombstone of his own for a surprising three, and the win to retain his title.

The Verdict

There's some energy at the start and at the end, but for the most part, this match is super dull. Just a ton of plodding, uninspired brawling. The match really only gets out of first gear at the end. This is an absolute skip of a match.

Match #7: Hell in a Cell 2010

Two weeks later, we'd get another match-up between Taker & Kane at that Hell in a Cell for the World Heavyweight Championship. The reason? Kane wants to destroy The Undertaker once and for all...again. This time, he'll try to do it inside Hell in a Cell, where their story started 13 years prior. The two had faced off on opposite sides of a tag match back in 1998, but this would be the first time they faced off one-on-one in the match. This time, however, Taker wouldn't be alone, as Paul Bearer would return once again and reunite Taker. Their last match had the best ratings of this 2010 trilogy. This one has the worst, getting just a half-star from Dave Meltzer, and holding a 3.30 rating on Cagematch. Let's take a look.

Taker instructs Bearer to wait outside the cage, which is enough of a distraction to allow Kane to rush him outside the ring. The door still unlocked, Taker & Kane brawl out of the cage. Kane throws Taker into the cage wall twice, beating him down in between. Kane drags Taker back into the cell, where he throws Taker into the wall before grabbing a chair from under the ring. Kane charges at Taker, but Taker kicks the chair back in his face. Taker tosses Kane into the wall as referee Mike Chioda locks the door. The bell rings as Taker hits Kane with the chair. Taker slams Kane's head onto the ring steps before tossing him in the ring.

Kane retreats to the corner, where Taker hits two body avalanches. Taker picks Kane up and hits Snake Eyes, following it up with a big boot and a leg drop for a near fall. Taker goes for the Chokeslam, but Kane is able to break Taker's grip. Kane grabs the chair and hits Taker twice, once in the gut and once in the back. Kane drags Taker to the corner, where he beats down Taker before knocking him down with a big boot. Kane stomps away at Taker until Taker slides out of the ring.

Kane follows him out, but Taker takes control with punches. Taker slams Kane's head on the steps before kicking him in the head. Another head slam is followed by Taker slamming Kane into the cell wall. Taker tries to whip Kane into the steps, but Kane reverses it, sending Taker into the steps. Kane stomps away at Taker before grabbing the chair. Kane targets Taker's knee, smashing it with the chair multiple times. Kane continues working the leg, wedging it between the steps and ring post before kicking the steps.

Kane throws Taker back in the ring, where he stomps his knee in the corner. Kane then drags Taker out of the ring again, striking away at him before setting him against the wall. Kane charges at him, but Taker dodges and her crashes into the wall. Taker strikes Kane against the wall before laying him on the apron. Taker boots Kane in the face before climbing on the apron for the apron leg drop. Taker crawls back in the ring, but Kane quickly knocks him down with a dropkick to the injured knee.

Kane continues working the leg, stomping it before applying an almost MINUTE AND A HALF leg lock. After struggling, Taker breaks the hold with punches to Kane's head. On the mat, the two trade blows, eventually trading blows on their feet. Kane gains the advantage and goes for a clothesline off an Irish whip, but Taker ducks it and hits the leaping clothesline. Taker grabs the wrist and goes for Old School, but Kane cuts his legs out from under him, crouching him on the top turnbuckle. Kane climbs to the second rope for a superplex, but Taker fends him off with a headbutt. An uppercut from Kane, however, allows Kane to keep control.

After a few more punches, Kane goes back to the second rope for the superplex. Kane goes back to the top rope for the flying clothesline. Kane crawls over to make the cover, only for Taker to spring to life and lock him in Hell's Gate (a Gogoplata.) Unable to use a rope break, Kane manages to slide out of the ring, using the ropes to physically break Taker's hold. After both men recover, Kane crawls back in the ring. Both men go for a big boot, knocking both of them down. Both men sit up, and the two trade blows on the mat. Kane gains the advantage with an uppercut and goes for a back body drop of an Irish whip, but Taker plants him with the jumping DDT for a near fall. Taker follows up with a Chokeslam and makes the cover, but Kane kicks out again.

Taker goes for the Last Ride, but Kane strikes Taker's knee to stop him. Kane hits a Chokeslam of his own and makes the cover, but Taker also kicks out. Taker crawls to the corner, where Kane hits three corner clotheslines. Kane lays into Taker with punches before climbing to the second rope for (presumably) 10 more punches. Kane only makes it to 3, however, as Taker grabs him and plants him with the Last Ride. Taker crawls into the cover, but Kane kicks out. Taker muscles Kane up for the Tombstone Piledriver, but Kane reverses it and hits a Tombstone of his own. Kane makes the cover, but Taker kicks out.

Furious, Kane uppercuts the referee, prompting Mike Chioda to open the cell door. Other referees and medics run down to help the referee out, while Chioda takes over refereeing. During this, Paul Bearer, urn in hand, enters the cell. Bearer tries to wake Taker up, prompting Kane to leave the ring and confront him. Kane forces Bearer into the ring, where Kane threatens Bearer. Behind his back, Taker sits up, and Kane turns right into another Chokeslam. Taker calls for the Tombstone, during which thunder hits, fire shoots out of the stage, and the arena is shrouded in purple lights...for some reason.

I can't remember a time when this happened before, but the commentators make zero note of this happening.

Taker scoops Kane up for the Tombstone, only for Bearer to open the urn's lid, which flashes a light in Taker's eyes. Everything goes back to normal as Bearer completely turns on Taker, handing the urn to Kane. Why did he do this? I don't think they ever explained it, and based on the puzzled looks Kane gives him, it doesn't seem like they had planned this. Confused, Kane takes the urn and smashes Taker in the face with it. Kane quickly follows up with a Chokeslam for the three and the win.

The Verdict

I actually didn't think this was too bad. It's another match that's mostly brawling with some downtimes, but I still thought there were some enjoyable points. The ending is a down point, however, as it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Still, I don't think this match, as a whole, was worse than the Night of Champions match.

Match #8: Bragging Rights 2010

And so, three weeks after Hell in a Cell, we reach our final match, and the final singles match between The Undertaker and Kane, at Braggings Rights 2010. Bragging Rights was a very brief event that replaced Cyber Sunday as the second October pay-per-view in 2009, and was themed around Raw and SmackDown facing off in matches for...bragging rights. No prize outside of a trophy, just...bragging rights. It never caught on (cause who cares) and after two years, Bragging Rights was replaced by Vengeance in 2011 before WWE scrapped the second October pay-per-view altogether. That was probably the right move, three pay-per-views in the span of about a month (like with these last three) is overkill.

For the final chapter of Undertaker vs Kane, WWE must've decided that since they already done a Casket match, a Hell in a Cell match, and an Inferno match...twice...they might as well round out Taker & Kane's signature matches with a Buried Alive match, once again for the World Heavyweight title. Not to mention multiple angles involved Kane interfering in Taker's Buried Alive matches, so it's only fitting the two actually face off in one. Did the trilogy go out on a high note? A single star from Dave Meltzer and a 3.57 on Cagematch says no, but let's take a look for ourselves.

Yet again, this match starts before the bell rings, as Taker rushes Kane in the entranceway during his entranceway. Taker strikes away at Kane, punching him to the ground before dragging him back to ringside. Taker slams Kane's head into the ring steps, which he follows up by whipping the rest of Kane into the steps. Taker rams Kane into the barricade before punching him to the ground. Taker slams Kane's head into the ring steps again before rolling him in the ring. Kane retreats into the corner, where Taker quickly hits a body avalanche. Taker follows up with a second avalanche, prompting Kane to roll out of the ring.

Kane tries to escape over the barricade, but Taker catches up to him. Kane lands an uppercut before slamming Taker's head into the barricade, but Taker fires back with a back elbow. Kane retreats into the crowd, where Taker follows him. Taker slams Kane's head onto a table, prompting Kane to retreat some more. Kane starts to walk up into the stands, but Taker catches up to him and beats him down. Taker steps on Kane's before laying to Kane with strikes. Taker beats Kane around the crowd until Kane fires back with punches. Kane then slams Taker's head onto a table, but Taker stays in control with punches of his own.

Taker drags Kane back to the barricade, tossing him back to ringside. Taker also tosses a few chairs into the ring before setting Kane on the apron. Taker boots Kane in the head climbing on the apron and hitting the leg drop. Taker grabs the announce table cover and tosses it in the ring before climbing in himself. Taker grabs a chair, causing Kane to dip out of the ring. Kane tries to escape over the barricade again, so Taker runs over and clotheslines him over. Taker climbs over the barricade and we get more brawling through the crowd. Taker beats Kane up into the stands before dragging him back to the barricade and tossing him over.

Kane rolls back in the ring and grabs a chair, hitting Taker in the gut before smashing him across the back. Kane lays into Taker with the chair before choking him with it. Kane drops the chair before dropping Taker with the Chokeslam. Kane quickly follows up with a second Chokeslam before dragging Taker out of the ring. Kane picks up Taker and carries him up the entranceway towards the grave. Taker fights free, however, and punches Kane. The two trade blows in the entranceway for a straight minute before Taker finally floors Kane.

Taker punches Kane around the stage as Kane retreats towards the grave. Taker calls for the Chokeslam, but Kane jabs his thumb in Taker's eye to break the hold. Kane follows up with a big boot and tries to drag Taker into the hole, only for Taker to sit up and lock Kane in Hell's Gate. Kane visibly taps out before passing out. Taker rolls Kane into the grave, but instead of actually burying him, Taker instead grabs Paul Bearer and makes him eat dirt. Taker grabs Bearer for the Chokeslam, only for what's left of the Nexus to suddenly run out.

Taker fends off Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, David Otunga, and Wade Barrett before grabbing Barrett for a chokeslam. Barrett is saved by Slater hitting Taker from behind. Looking back at this in 2023, Heath Slater jumping The Undertaker is just a funny visual. The Nexus beats down Taker as Kane crawls out of the grave. They hold them in place for Kane to hit Taker with the urn, which causes Taker to fall into the grave. Barrett & Slater shovel dirt on Taker before Kane shoos them away. Why did the Nexus help Kane? From what I've gathered, it seemed like this was going to lead to Barrett challenging Taker at WrestleMania XXVII, but that obviously never happened. Instead, Wade Barrett got to be squashed in 90 seconds in an eight-man tag. What a pittance...

Kane sets off fire on the tombstone, which signals for a crane to dump dirt over the grave. Kane wins, and retains the title once again.

The Verdict

A long brawl that is more that's not interesting more often than not. There's some energy at the beginning, but that's about it. There's only a handful of actual spots in the match. Add on the fact that, like with the Hell in a Cell match, it has an ending that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and is never explained. All in all, this is the worst of the trilogy.

Here's an oddity that I'd love you to see... Kodo Fuyuki facing Captain Jack. As in, the guy who had those songs in DDR, Captain Jack. Late FMW was weird with its lurch into Sports Entertainment.

Hey tough guy! Constructing those multi-match posts must take its toll on the brain? Well, your pal Hacksaw Jim Duggan produced a video cassette in 1988 featuring some candidates for your list!

A couple of flag matches will start off your day; one against Boris Zhukov from Saturday Night’s Main Event in November 1988. The other one versus Dino Bravo on the MSG Network on December 30, 1988.

To top it all off, climb on top of the French Alps and watch your pal Hacksaw try and fail to defeat the 8th Wonder of the World, Andre the Giant! The walking Eiffel Tower refused to enter the ring for five minutes, does his trademark rope trick right off the bat and pins Duggan with his feet on the ropes! Originally aired on June 4, 1988 on the NESN Network. This match will leave you cross-eyed with your tongue sticking out after you view it! All of them are available on YouTube.

Here's a WCW PPV from 2000 that was pretty bad Superbrawl 2000! A ppv that's riddled with bad matches, Booker T losing the T in his in ring name, two past their primes legends having a match together and Scott Halls final match in WCW ending on a whimper rather then a bang. Ric Flair and Terry Funk had a fun Texas Death match but unfortunately it wasn't enough to save the show.

I got a couple of bad matches from No Way Out 2001 from a bad hardcore title match and a match that was rendered pointless as The Kat which the match was centered around was released which also led to Jerry Lawler leaving the company for a bit.

There are a couple of bad matches from Wrestlemania X-8 that you might be interested in. Christian vs Diamond Dallas Page a match during Christian's temper tantrum shtick which was pretty mediocre and a tag team title fatal four way which did not have a TLC stipulation, but it went on too long and the least popular tag team won the match.
