Worst in the World: Hollywood Hogan vs Randy Savage-Halloween Havoc 1996

It's October 1996, and WCW is thriving. With the New World Order forming three months prior at Bash at the Beach, the now-Hollywood Hulk Hogan reclaiming the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and spray painting "nWo" on it the following month at Hog Wild, and Sting walking out on WCW the following month at Fall Brawl, the product is unbelievably hot. So much so that Monday Nitro was 17 weeks deep into their legendary 83-week winning streak in the ratings battle with the WWF's Monday Night Raw. This storyline was hitting, and WCW was looking to continue that hot streak with the main event of Halloween Havoc, with Hogan defending his World Heavyweight Championship against his former tag partner and longtime rival Randy Savage. Would this match create another iconic, memorable moment like the previous three pay-per-views?...Not really.
This match, the first time Hogan and Savage would face off in a singles match since the WWF's "The Main Event III" in 1990, is a whole just kind of forgettable. Maybe it's because the follow-up angle featuring the debut of Roddy Piper kind of overshadows it, but it's entirely possible that the match just isn't good. Hogan was never really known as a great in-rig worker, and Savage is kind of past his prime at this point in his career. Granted, this match doesn't have terrible reviews, as it earned a one-star rating from Dave Meltzer and currently sits at 5.16 out of 10 on Cagematch.net. Let's take a look.
Before the match. Hollywood Hogan is standing in the crowd, with his fellow nWo-members The Giant, Ted DiBiase, and Vincent (Virgil.) It's here that we first see that Hogan's long blonde skullet is gone, and instead, he's got short, spikey hair.
This will come back for a really funny reason. Hogan says he's just finished filming for the movie 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain before plugging Santa with Muscles. Both of those movies are terrible...just saying. He says he got tired of body-slamming Hollywood, so he's come back to bodyslam a "lost, lovesick puppy" in Randy Savage. The nWo's music hits as Hogan & company walk through the crowd. Michael Buffer's doing the ring announcing, during which somebody hits Savage's music way too early. Savage is out next, during which he signals for a "Macho Man" themed monster truck to come out from the back.
What is with this company and monster trucks? Whatever, as long they don't have a sumo match with it, WCW could have 500 monster trucks on the show for all I care.
Referee Randy Anderson tells the Giant and DiBiase to leave, which Savage agrees with. Anderson even threatens to give Savage the win & the title by forfeit. The Giant ends up heading to the back, while DiBiase pulls out a contract that presumably allows him to be out there. The match starts with a good 25 seconds of circling the ring. This isn't broken up by action, it instead leads to Hogan leaving the ring and yelling at fans. In a moment that's hard to explain, Savage sits on the ropes to challenge to get back in the ring, and Anderson starts counting him out for sitting on the ropes. What? After Hogan's been out of the ring for 30 seconds, Anderson starts counting him out. It's legitimately a minute before Hogan gets back in the ring. A minute of just Hogan walking around ringside while Savage yells at him. Once he gets back in the ring, Savage goes for a lock-up, but Hogan quickly ducks through the ropes, forcing Anderson to get between them. Hogan hasn't even taken off his sunglasses. We are two minutes into the match and they have done NOTHING. It another 20 seconds of circling before the two finally lock up, with Hogan putting Savage in a headlock. After a bit, Savage is able to power out and throw Hogan into the ropes. Hogan keeps control, however, by flooring Savage with a shoulder block. Hogan hits the ropes again, but Savage goes under him. Hogan quickly dips out of the ring before Savage can get any offense in.
This time, Savage follows him out. Hogan slides back in the ring, so Savage follows him back in. This leads to the two staring each other down and teasing a test of strength spot. By the time they finally lock hands, it's been nearly two minutes since Hogan rolled out of the ring. Four minutes and they have done a HEADLOCK AND A SHOULDER BLOCK. This is sucks so bad. The test of strength is quickly broken up by Hogan kicking Savage in the gut. Hogan follows up with a double axe handle to the back, knocking Savage down. Hogan continues striking away at Savage before rubbing his face into the mat.
Savage stumbles into the corner, where Hogan punches him in the face. Hogan continues working over Savage, throwing his head into the top turnbuckle before chopping him. Hogan follows up by whipping Savage into the ropes, hitting him with a clothesline when he bounces back. Hogan follows up with a double-throat strike and a kick, the latter knocking Savage down. Hogan continues striking away at Savage before whipping Savage across the ring. Hogan goes for a clothesline, but Savage ducks it and punches away at Hogan.
Savage staggers Hogan before going to the top rope and hitting a diving double axe handle. Savage takes Hogan's sunglasses and puts them on. Hogan pleads with Savage, but Savage just kicks him. Savage grabs him by the hair and punches him to the ground, ripping off Hogan's wig. Savage mocks him by putting the wig on himself.
Furious, Hogan charges at Savage, but Savage ducks and sends him into the corner. Savage punches away at Hogan, eventually punching him right out of the ring. Hogan starts to leave up the entranceway, but Savage charges after him and knocks him down. Savage stuffs Hogan's wig in his mouth before throwing him into the guard rail. Savage drags Hogan back to ringside, where he throws him into the ring post. Savage then grabs a chair and hits Hogan in the head, which is not a DQ, I guess. Or maybe it is, because Savage tries to hit Hogan again, only Randy Anderson reaches over and grabs the chair out of his hands. So either it's against the rules and Savage should've been DQ'd for the first hit, or it's legal and Anderson took the chair just cause.
The interjection allows Hogan to hit Savage from behind, knocking him down. Hogan takes the chair and hits Savage, which also doesn't get him DQ'd because who knows. Hogan throws Savage into the ring post before hitting him with the chair again, though this time DiBiase distracted Anderson. Hogan follows up by dropping Savage crotch first on the guard rail, which brings out Miss Elizabeth, who comes down to ringside. Hogan throws Savage back in the ring, where he chokes him against the mat. Hogan yells at Elizabeth, but that allows Savage to roll him up for a two-count. Hogan quickly pounces on him and punches him. Savage pulls Hogan's tights down, showing his ass for some reason, but Hogan stops him with an eye rake.
Hogan stays on the offensive, punching and stomping Savage. He again yells at Elizabeth, which allows Savage to hit him from behind. Savage lays into him with punches before clotheslining out of the ring. Savage quickly follows him out and chases him around ringside, Hogan pleading the entire time. Hogan eventually reaches for Elizabeth, using her as a human shield. This allows Hogan to get back in the ring. Savage follows him, but Hogan floors him with a shoulder block. Hogan hits the ropes, but Savage drops down before scooping Hogan up and hitting a body slam. Savage follows up with a knee to the back, sending Hogan out of the ring.
Hogan drags Savage out right after and goes for a punch, but Savage blocks it and lays into him with punches of his own. Savage chases Hogan around ringside, only for Hogan to again use Elizabeth as a human shield. This time, Hogan throws Elizabeth into Savage, allowing him to floor Savage with a shoulder block. Hogan throws Savage back in the ring, where he hits a big boot. Hogan plays up to the crowd as Elizabeth runs into the ring to check on Savage. Hogan goes for the leg drop, but stops when he sees Elizabeth. Hogan chastises Elizabeth in the corner before going for the leg drop, but Savage rolls out of the way.
DiBiase hands Hogan a foreign object and Hogan tries to hit Savage, only for Elizabeth to rip it out of his hands. Anderson checks on Savage as Hogan goes for a clothesline, only for Savage to duck, causing Anderson to take the hit. Hogan ends up clotheslining Savage from behind as DiBiase rips the object out of Elizabeth's hands. Suddenly, two referees, Mark Curus the not-yet-officially-but-totally-is-secretly-an-nWo member Nick Patrick, in a neck brace, runs down to attend to Anderson. Meanwhile, Hogan punches away at Savage before going for a back body drop. Savage counters with a kick, however, and body slams Hogan before going to the top rope. Mark Curtis helps Anderson to the back while Nick Patrick gets in the ring, just as Savage hits the diving elbow.
Savage makes the cover and  Nick Patrick begins to count, only to stop because his neck hurts. Savage shoves Patrick to the ground and rips off his neckbrace and his shirt (not sure why for the latter) as DiBiase hands the object to Hogan again. Hogan tries to hit Savage, but Savage blocks it and punches him, knocking the object out of Hogan's hand. Savage grabs it and hits Hogan, knocking him down. Savage goes back to the top rope for another elbow drop, only for DiBiase to climb on the apron and grab his ankle. Savage drops down to ringside and grabs DiBiase, only for The Giant to run out from the back. The Giant quickly grabs Savage and throws him into the guard rail. The Giant follows up with a chokeslam on the ground before tossing him back in the ring. The Giant gets in the ring and lays Hogan over Savage, as Nick Patrick recovers and counts the pin, giving the win to Hogan.
After the bell rings, The Giant heads to the back, returning soon after with a bowl of ice water. The Giant spills half of it getting in the ring before pouring it over Hogan, waking him up. As Savage is helped to the back, Hogan cuts a promo, calling himself the King of Hollywood before saying that he's taking over WCW. Hogan & The Giant celebrate, only for familiar bagpipes to start playing. This brings out Roddy Piper. Considering this doesn't really have anything to do with the match, that it's EIGHT MINUTES long, and that it's so long that the show just cuts out before it's even over, I'm gonna bow out here.

The Verdict

You know, four minutes into this match, I was already sick of this match. Almost nothing but theatrics and blatant stalling. I was dreading having to watch another 14 minutes. Thankfully, the match gets a lot better and overall, it's pretty passable. It's still pretty basic and overbooked like crazy, but it's far from the worst match I've ever seen.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. Next week, I'll be doing a multi-match post where I'll look at seven matches between The Undertaker and Kane. A classic rivalry that has mostly produced bad matches. Stay tuned...

  1. Here's a ppv which saw Stone Cold getting run over by a car, the debut of Kurt Angle, The Big Show winning the WWE Title after squashing mid carders and a whole lot of Attitude Era nothingness

    Kurt Angle vs Shawn Stasiak
    Kane vs X Pac
Big Show vs Big Bossman/Prince Albert/Mideon/Viscera
    Chyna vs Chris Jericho
New Age Outlaws vs Mankind/Al Snow

  2. I think a look at the match Goldust had with a very, very drunk Steven Regal (on the November 2, 1998 RAW) is worth a look. Depressing.

  3. I don’t have a request this week, but if someone were to ever look at an old Coliseum VHS tape (eg. "The Best of The WWF Volume #) and decide one match would qualify for the list, would you consider it? thehistoryofwwe.com website is a great historical resource for Prime Time, SuperStars and Wrestling Challenge taping results and they indicate any matches recorded that were later released on VHS and/or DVD.

BTW, during Piper's rant on Hogan at the end of the show, he referred to the Giant as "Sprout"! That's a reference to the Green Giant Vegetable company which introduced a little mascot of the same name. Ironically, the mascot was introduced in 1972, the same year that Paul Wight was born. It's also a back-handed slap to The Giant's original WCW storyline where he was portrayed as Andre the Giant's son, hence the "Green Giant - Sprout connection".

  4. The reason for the Macho Man monster truck is that believe it or not WCW actually did plan to do another Monster Truck Sumo Match for this feud, but determined the feud was too serious for that. A NWO-ified version of Hogan’s truck from the previous year actually appears on Nitro during the build.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
