Dusty Rhodes vs Big Boss Man...that's all I've really got. I'm not really sure what to say. Neither are terrible workers or terrible characters, so there's not much to slag them for. Yeah, I guess they just don't work well together. Anyways, this match comes from the November 25th, 1989 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, the same show that featured Ultimate Warrior vs Andre the Giant, which is currently in the bottom 10 of my rankings. Man...this was a rough episode.
Before the match starts, Dusty immediately gives out to the referee about Boss Man's manager Slick being at ringside, and demands he leave ringside. Umm...you can't just kick someone from ringside because they might cheat. It would be like calling a foul on someone in basketball because they were guarding a person and they might foul them. Also, this doesn't make Dusty look like a fighting babyface at all. The minute he's in a disadvantage, he cowers and demands it be made fair. What a face! Slick responds to Dusty's demand by busting out his Manager's License, which gives him the right to be at ringside. The referee shows this to Dusty, and he TOSSES IT OUT OF THE RING! ARE YOU A BABYFACE?! That's a serious question. How can someone who acts like rules don't matter be a face. Why would you cheer this guy?
Anyway, Boss Man blindsides Dusty, but Dusty gets out of the jam and hits a few punches before going over to Slick, who hopped up on the apron (NOW you can complain and ask for him to be ejected), which allows Boss Man to blindside him again. Boss Man and Slick beat down Dusty, who is unable to get any offense in due to the 2-on-1 disadvantage. Boss Man throws Dusty into the ring post, barley grazing it with his shoulder, and rolls back in the ring.
The two trade punches until Boss Man goes to work on Dusty's arm, locking in a wristlock, which Dusty COMPLETELY NO SELLS and hops up to his feet, even no selling two more wristlocks by Boss Man. And not in the Hulk Hogan way where he starts shaking around because he's Hulking Up and making his comeback, but instead doing nothing as Boss Man does moves around him. You know, for a guy as charismatic as Dusty Rhodes, you'd think he'd, you know...show it. Boss Man stops a Dusty comeback before it starts and goes back to work on Dusty's bad arm with another wristlock, Dusty no sells again by hopping right back up to his feet, and Boss Man knocks him down with a back elbow.
Dusty dodges a corner splash and Dusty runs wild, hitting his Bionic Elbow in the process. Boss Man dodges an elbow drop and hits a body guillotine into the ropes. Boss Man calls for his nightstick from Slick, which makes absolutely no sense. He's got the match well in his favor right now, why would he risk getting disqualified? Slick argues with a woman in the audience (Sapphire), which distracts Boss Man long enough for Dusty to perform a terrible roll up for the three and the win. Post match there's a lot of yelling and arguing and it doesn't lead to anything except Dusty and Sapphire dancing in the ring.
The Verdict
Look, I don't like saying bad things about Dusty Rhodes. He's a legend in the business and has done so much to help the next generation of WWE superstars...but what the hell was this match? Dusty not only acted heelish to start the match, but completely no sold a lot of Boss Man's offense. Aside from the terrible roll up, there wasn't much actually bad about the match wrestling wise, but it still wasn't that good.
