My Thoughts on SmackDown (7/19/16): Draft Day (With Draft Results)

  • We kick off the show with the first 5 picks of the draft.
  1. Seth Rollins to RAW
  2. Dean Ambrose to SmackDown
  3. Charlotte to RAW
  4. AJ Styles to SmackDown
  5. Finn Balor to RAW
  • John Cena vs Luke Gallows-Right off the bat, Lillian Garcia botches the introductions, announcing AJ Styles as "The Phenomenon". Hopefully she gets drafted to ECW. To match the Club, Enzo & Cass come out to Cena's corner. At this point, SmackDown goes to commercial break, but instead of just going to commercial, they keep SmackDown on in a little screen on the side. It's such an eye sore, and it's hard to even keep track of because the screen is so small. We come back to full screen with Gallows in control, getting a near fall. Gallows locks in a shoulder claw, but Cena breaks out and runs wild and goes through the Five Moves of Doom. Gallows escapes the AA attempt and delivers a big boot. With both men down, Enzo, Cass, Styles, and Anderson get in the ring. Enzo & Cass toss Styles & Anderson from the ring, and Cena hits the AA for the win. Nothing match.
  • We get picks 6-10 up next
  1. Roman Reigns to RAW
  2. John Cena to SmackDown
  3. Brock Lesnar to RAW
  4. Randy Orton to SmackDown
  5. The New Day to RAW
  • Darren Young & Zack Ryder vs The Miz & Rusev-The match kicks off with the faces working over Miz, but Miz quickly gets the advantage. The heels beat down Ryder until he tags out, and Young runs wild on the Miz. Young hits the Gut Check on Miz, but Rusev breaks up the pin. Everyone gets their spots in, and Backlund calls for the Crossface Chickenwing. Young locks in the hold to a huge ovation and gets the submission win. There ya go, Young getting a win without a distraction or people eliminating themselves. Although I am ticked a bit, because you know how I feel about champions losing clean on TV.
  • Xavier Woods vs Bray Wyatt-Wyatt plays mind games with Woods to start as Woods looks terrified to be in the ring with Wyatt. It nice to see someone actually sell Wyatt's mind games instead of just brushing them off like somebody we know.
Woods eventually moves forward, but Wyatt beats him down. We then find out that the Wyatt's are going to be drafted separately, not as a team. Wyatt pulverizes Woods as he taunts Kofi and Big E, but Woods fights back. It's to no avail, as Wyatt hits Sister Abigail for the win.
  • Kane vs Kevin Owens-How the hell is Kevin Owens not in the Top 10? This is a travesty. Anyway, Sami Zayn runs down to fight Owens, and Kane chokeslams both of them because of course that would happen. Nice to see the old stars putting over the young guys
  • It's time for picks 11-15
  1. Sami Zayn to RAW
  2. Bray Wyatt to SmackDown
  3. Sasha Banks to RAW
  4. Becky Lynch to SmackDown
  5. Chris Jericho to RAW
  • Charlotte & Dana Brooke vs Sasha Banks in a 2-on-1 Handicap match-Sasha boots Charlotte off the apron and goes to work on on Dana. She goes to beat up Charlotte on the outside, but the numbers game comes up and gives the heels the advantage. Sasha runs wild and hits and locks in the Bank Statement on Dana, but Charlotte makes a blind tag and hit Natural Selection for the win.
  • Picks 16-20 time
  1. Rusev & Lana to RAW
  2. The Miz & Marsye to SmackDown
  3. Kevin Owens to RAW
  4. Baron Corbin to SmackDown
  5. Enzo Amore & Big Cass to RAW
  • Chris Jericho vs Cesaro-Cesaro quickly takes control, clotheslining Jericho out of the ring, hitting a diving cannonball off the apron, a big running uppercut, and a diving crossbody in the ring for a near fall. Jericho eventually gains his footing and takes control with an enziguri. Cesaro fights back and goes to the top rope, but Jericho catches him up there and hits a super hurricanrana. Jericho goes for a Lionsault, but Cesaro jumps up and hits a Russian leg sweep off the second rope. After a Cesaro Swing and Jericho reversing a Neutralizer, Cesaro goes for a Springboard Uppercut, but Jericho catches him with a Codebreaker for the win. Good little match, nothing special.
  • We come back from commercial to see Becky Lynch & Natalya fighting at ringside, ending with Becky getting the upperhand.
  • We get picks 21-25
  1. Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson to RAW
  2. American Alpha to SmackDown
  3. Big Show to RAW
  4. Dolph Ziggler to SmackDown
  5. Nia Jax to RAW
  • After a commercial, we get picks 26-30
  1. Neville to RAW
  2. Natalya to SmackDown
  3. Cesaro to RAW
  4. Alberto Del Rio to SmackDown
  5. Sheamus to RAW
  • Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose (c) for the WWE Championship-Rollins wastes no time putting the boots to Ambrose, attacking him before the bell even sounds. After a commercial break, the match starts with Rollins beating down Ambrose, getting multiple near falls along the way. The match spills to the outside, where Ambrose back body drops Rollins into the timekeeper's area. Ambrose goes for a diving elbow, but Rollins dodges and Ambrose hits the barricade. Rollins brings Ambrose back in the ring and hits a high knee and a super kick for a near fall before the commercial break. We come back with Rollins hitting running forearms in the corner, but Ambrose catches him on the third attempt with a clothesline. Ambrose runs wild with forearms and gets a near fall on a roll up. Ambrose goes to the top rope, but Rollins counters and hits a Buckle Bomb. Ambrose dodges a Frog Splash and almost gets the win with a cradle pin. Rollins delivers a poke to the eye and goes for the Pedigree, but Ambrose flips him over the ropes and hits a suicide dive. Ambrose rolls Rollins back, but he rolls back out, so Ambrose hits the diving elbow to the outside. Rollins hits a superplex, but Ambrose counters the follow through suplex attempt and hits Dirty Deeds for the win and retains the title. Another good match from these two.
  • And to finish off the post, here are the rest of the picks from the draft.
  1. The Golden Truth to RAW
  2. The Usos to SmackDown

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
