When you have a star from the previous generation of wrestling come back to fight a star of the current generation, you run the risk of it being bad. Sure, there are good examples like The Rock vs Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X-8 or Mick Foley vs Edge from WrestleMania 22,but then there are ones like Bob Backlund vs Razor Ramon at WrestleMania 9 or The Rock vs John Cena at WrestleMania 29 that just didn't strike a chord and fell flat. That's what I was thinking was going to happen for this match, when the 49-year-old Sgt. Slaughter took on the rising star Triple H in a Boot Camp match at D-Generation X: In Your House. Did it meet my cynical expectations? Let's get into it.
So oddly enough, Sgt. Slaughter comes out to what would be Kurt Angle's entrance theme. I know Angle wasn't in WWE yet, but that was still weird. So the match kicks off with Slaughter battering Triple H with a riding crop. Slaughter continues to beat down Triple H before tossing him over the top rope and out of the ring. Slaughter follows him out and throws Triple H around at ringside. Let me just clarify this again; Sgt. Slaughter was 49 years old at the time. And he's absolutely destroying Triple H, who was King of the Ring, not even 30 years old yet, and primed to be one of the top stars in the company. How is this even remotely making Triple H look good?
Slaughter tries to make a cover on the outside, but the referee informs him that he has to make the pin in the ring. After Triple H tries to escape, Slaughter grabs him, throws him back in the ring, and whips him with his belt before choking him with it. Slaughter calls for the Cobra Clutch, but Triple H is finally able to get some offense in, escaping the hold and reversing an Irish whip, sending Slaughter over the top rope and to the outside. Almost 5 minutes straight of Triple H getting beat down by someone 20 years older than him. Although I will say, Slaughter bumped like a boss off that Irish whip, especially for someone who was almost 50 at the time.
Triple H begins to beat down Sgt. Slaughter and goes to grab the ring bell. Timekeeper and expert beer tosser Mark Yeaton won't give it to him, so Triple H hits him with the bell. Triple HU goes to hit Slaughter, but he gets up and clotheslines Triple H to the ground. Terrible camera work ensues, as the camera focuses on Yeaton while Triple H recovers, grabs the ring bell, and hits Slaughter in the back with it. For shame, Kevin Dunn. For shame.
Triple H rolls Slaughter back into the ring and starts whipping and choking him with a belt. Chyna gives Triple H a chain and punches Slaughter with the chain before hitting a fist drop with it for a near fall. Triple H goes for another punch, but Slaughter blocks it and throws a few punches before collapsing. Slaughter grabs the chain and goes to hit Triple H, but Triple H is able to back body drop him out of the ring. Jesus, Slaughter takes some pretty sick bumps for someone his age.
Triple H rolls him back in the ring and goes for a flying nothing, but Slaughter gets his foot up. Slaughter goes for a body slam, but collapses and can't slam him. Triple H goes for a suplex, but Slaughter counters with one of his own. Slaughter goes to the top rope, but Triple H pops up and tosses Slaughter off. Triple H locks in a sleeper hold and Slaughter appears to be out, but he barely keeps his hand up on the third drop. Slaughter fights out and is able to lock in the Cobra Clutch, but Chyna runs in and rakes Slaughter's eyes before punching the ref out. Damn, if it weren't for the interference, this was probably going to be at the top of the list.
Chyna tries to wreck Slaughter with a chair, but Slaughter throws powder in her eyes. Triple H takes off his boot and hits Slaughter with it, but Slaughter counters the second shot and locks in the Cobra Clutch again. Triple H looks like he's about to be out, but Chyna recovers and absolutely punts Slaughter in the dick. That wasn't a normal low blow, that was like an Adam Vinatieri kick right there. Triple H sets the chair below him and Pedigrees Slaughter into the chair, getting the win.
The Verdict
To be honest, I was not looking forward to having to watch this match after seeing it was almost 18 minutes long. I never remembered Slaughter being a good wrestler, so watching him go 18 minutes was something I was not looking forward to at all. However, this match was far better than I expected. In fact, it was almost the best I've seen for this series. The action was fine, Slaughter bumped like a boss for Triple H, and they told a good story with Slaughter selling his age and exhaustion. If it weren't for the interference from Chyna, it would be the best. But a high spot will have to do.
