My Thoughts on NXT (8/10/16): No Time For Hugs

  • We kick off the show with the contract signing between Asuka and Bayley for the NXT Women's Championship match at Takeover: Brooklyn II. Bayley takes the mic and says she was the underdog for years in NXT until she won the title in Brooklyn last year and that she wasn't ready for Dallas. She says she's ready and that Asuka's mystique won't work on her anymore. She vows to become the first ever two-time NXT Women's Champion before signing the contract. Asuka then takes the mic and says Bayley doesn't have what it takes to beat her and that she'll end Bayley's dreams where they came true. The two say they respect each other, but Bayley tells Asuka to sign the contract unless she wants to end up like she was after her contract signing with Nia Jax. Asuka signs and extends a hand. Bayley slaps the hand away and shrugs past her before leaving the ring. Asuka says something, so Bayley runs back and the two have a face-to-face before Asuka leaves the ring
  • The Authors of Pain vs Rob Ryzin & Adrian Nails-Oh my god, the Authors of Pain are great. At one point, one of them chucks Nails into his team's corner and hit his partner so he tags out. Ryzin looks absolutely petrified to get in the ring (rightfully so) and gets clobbered as soon as he gets in the ring. Even better, both Authors pick up Ryzin & Nails for powerbombs and smash them into each other before powerbombing them both. They literally beat a motherf*cker with another motherf*cker. These two are the actual best. The Authors of Pain follow that up with the Russian leg sweep/lariat combo for the easy win. They try to do the same to Nails post-match, but TM61 runs down to make the save. It's to no avail, as Miller takes a powerbomb and Thorne eats the sidewalk slam/big boot combo. The Authors of Pain are the G.O.A.T
  • Shinsuke Nakamura gets interviewed. He responds to Samoa Joe's threat and says that he's not hard to find. And that he'll find Samoa Joe when he wants to before walking off.
  • Andrade "Cien" Almas vs Angelo Dawkins-Hey, it looks like the "You beat up Tye Dillinger" heat has finally worn off for Almas. The two go back and forth to start before Almas hits a hurricanrana. Dawkins takes control with a straight punch and locks in a headlock. There is one super obnoxious fan cheering loudly for Dawkins. I single her out because she's the only person cheering for him. Almas escapes, hits a springboard dropkick, beats Dawkins down into the corner, hits the running double knees, and debuts his new finisher, the hammerlock DDT, for the win. Almas is a great worker, he just needs a good match to show it in. After the match...GLORIOUS! It's Bobby Roode! He congratulates Almas, not on his win, which he says was OK but a bit sloppy, but on the fact that he gets to face him at Takeover: Brooklyn II. Roode adds that everyone in Brooklyn isn't paying to see Almas, they are paying to see him and that the night will be GLORIOUS!
  • In William Regal's office, Austin Aries says Brooklyn won't be special unless he's on the card while tossing around an orange. Regal says he's right and says he'll be facing No Way Jose. Aries says Jose isn't on his level and that he'll prove it at Brooklyn.
  • Billie Kay vs Liv Morgan-The two go back and forth until Liv hits a handspring headscissors takedown, only to get dropped face first into the turnbuckle and eat a discus punch from Billie for a near fall. Billie really lays into Liv with forearms before locking in an armbar. Liv is able to escape with an arm drag, hits a jawbreaker, and runs wild, hitting a clothesline, a bulldog, and a monkey flip. Billie dodges the roundhouse kick by Morgan and delivers the big boot for the win. Alright match, nothing special.
  • In Regal's office, Regal compliments Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa on their great match in the Cruiserweight Classic and tells them they will be challenging The Revival in Brooklyn for the NXT Tag Team Championships.
  • We get another Ember Moon vignette.
  • Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa vs Tucker Knight & Patrick Clark-First off, how funny is it that out of all the people from Tough Enough, the ones who have had the most success in wrestling so far are the ones who came in 9th & 10th place. Gabi's over in TNA managing the BroMans as Raquel, and Patrick is wrestling on NXT TV. Just to clarify, male runner-up ZZ is already gone from WWE, female runner-up Amanda got one season on Total Divas, Sara is showing up in live event tag matches, and Josh is doing jobs for Wesley Blake at live events. Gargano & Clark start off with Gargano getting the upper hand with a hammerlock. Gargano & Ciampa work over Clark until Clark is able to gain the upper hand. Clark & Knight get the heat as Knight works over Ciampa. Ciampa hits an enziguri and Gargano gets the hot tag. Gargano runs wild, hitting the roll through enziguri and a springboard shoulder tackle before tagging in Ciampa. The two hit an enziguri/running knee combo before hitting the superkick/running knee combo on Knight for the win. Fine match.
  • Mojo Rawley gets interviewed. He says "they messed with the wrong guy" and that this is twice now that a "fat, 900-pound heavyweight stuck his nose" in his business. What the f*ck is he talking about? What does he mean "twice now?" Who was the first? Is he talking about Bull Dempsey or something? Because that's weird because that was like two years ago. Anyways, he ends by saying tonight is not about getting hype, it's about getting even.
  • Mojo Rawley vs Samoa Joe-Rawley kicks off the match hot, going straight after Joe. Rawley takes Joe down with two shoulder tackles and knocks him out of the ring with a Pounce. Rawley continues the attack outside until Joe dodges a charging Rawley and sends him into the ring stairs. Joe takes control back in the ring, hitting the corner splash and enziguri before delivering a chop to the back. Joe stays on the offensive and sets Rawley up for the Muscle Buster, but Rawley fights out and hits a diving clothesline. Rawley escapes the Coquina Clutch and hits a spinning full nelson slam for a near fall. Rawley goes for a Stinger Splash, but Joe catches him with an STO before locking in the Coquina Clutch for the submission win. Good match, best Rawley's ever had in my opinion. After the match, Joe reapplies the Coquina Clutch on Rawley before Nakamura comes out to make the save. Security sprints down to the ring to prevent a fight. They hold Joe back as Nakamura continuously provokes him to end the show.
And that's about it. Overall, a fine episode of NXT. Joe vs Rawley was good and the Authors of Pain are still the best. Nothing horrible on this show, either.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
