(Note: I couldn't find two of the matches on the list anywhere, so unless I find them, they're off the list. The two matches were the Reverse Battle Royal from TNA in 2006, and Lou Albano vs Freddie Blassie in 1985)
Wrestling has seen a lot of different non-wrestlers step in the ring. From on screen personalities like Paul Heyman and Jim Ross, to pro athletes like Floyd Mayweather and Lawrence Taylor, to even actors like Seth Green and Stephen Amell. However, there is arguably no stranger competitor than...Head. If you remember, Head is a mannequin head that Al Snow carries around, talks to, and exists for a punch line (What does everybody want? What does everybody need?). It is an inanimate object. Outside of maybe that one time Shawn Michaels teamed up with God to face the McMahons, this is by far the strangest competitor in WWE history. In what is only one of two matches Head is in, he teamed with Snow to face Too Much, later known as Too Cool, with special guest referee Jerry Lawler (because Brian Christopher of Too Much is his real-life son, and the gimmick was everyone knew, but they both denied it on TV.)
So before the match, Snow starts furiously yelling at Head for "not keeping track" of who the referee was going to be. It's kind of funny. Snow gets a takedown on Scott Taylor (Scotty 2 Hotty), but goes back to argue with Head, allowing Taylor to get the advantage. The two trade reversals before Snow hits an atomic drop and a clothesline, which prompts Taylor to tag in Christopher (Grand Master Sexay) while Snow argues with Head again. I know Al Snow is supposed to be, like, crazy and all, but come on, dude, you're in the middle of a match.
Christopher hawks a loogie at Head. It was kind of funny, I just wanted to acknowledge it. Snow gets Christopher in the corner, but gets called off by Lawler after Christopher said he pulled his hair. Just for reference, this is what Brian Christopher's hair looks like:

There's no hair to grab. Brian Christopher is actually great.
Thanks to help from Lawler, Christopher takes control with a clothesline, but gets tossed off the top rope by Snow. Snow goes up top, but gets knocked down by Taylor. Christopher goes for a superplex, but Snow hits a sunset flip powerbomb and goes for the pin, but Lawler delivers a slow count. JR quips that Lawler "must of went to the Vince McMahon referee academy". See? Continuity. why is that so hard for today's writers to remember?
Snow dishes both members of Too Much outside the ring, walks up the ramp, and delivers a pretty dissapointing clothesline to Christopher. Why would you build up a big move and then do nothing. Taylor goes for a springboard, but Snow is too far out of position so he basically does a clothesline to Snow's knees. Christopher gets the heat, and Snow reaches to tag in Head. OH, COME ON! I get it, Snow's not very bright, but ARE YOU SERIOUS! Too Much hits a double atomic drop, Taylor hits a dropkick, and Lawler fast counts Snow but only gets a two. Taylor dances around the ring a lot, whips Snow into the ropes, but gets caught with a great wheelbarrow suplex. Lawler actually helps Taylor make a tag so that Snow can't tag in Head, but...why wouldn't they want Head in. IT'S A HEAD! LITERALLY, IT IS JUST A MANNEQUIN'S HEAD! JUST LET IT TAG IN, PIN IT, AND YOU WIN! IT'S NOT THAT HARD!
Snow hits a double DDT on Too Much, and tags in Head. He grabs Head and starts beating Too Much up with it. That's a disqualification, Lawler should have given him a five count to get out of the ring. Seriously, he supposed to help Too Much win, why is he letting the guy he doesn't want to win cheat? Just disqualify him! AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE WHO GIVES A SH*T ABOUT THE RULES!
Snow hits a Snow Plow on Christopher and covers, but Lawler rightfully doesn't count because Snow isn't legal in the match. Snow grabs Head, low blows Taylor, but doesn't see Lawler toss Christopher (and I'm not even kidding) a bottle of Head & Shoulders. Snow hits a Snow Plow on Taylor and pins (again, not the legal man), and Christopher puts the Head & Shoulders bottle in Head's neck hole (so now it technically is Head & Shoulders) and pins Head for the win. That was actually pretty funny, I laughed way harder at that than I should have.
The Verdict
I feel like this got the rating it got (minus two stars from Dave Meltzer) because of how dumb the concept was alone. The match itself is fine, Snow, Christopher, and Taylor are all pretty good workers, and there were some funny moments. Both wrestling and comedy wise, it's probably the best match I've seen in this series.

And up next on the list is...
Great..who's ready to read about the biggest babyface in wrestling beating up a 46 year old for 17 minutes?
Thanks for reading. Be sure to share if you enjoyed.
The reason they didn't want to face Head is that she has no shoulders and cannot be pinned. She has no voice and cannot submit. She has no arms and cannot use a foreign weapon. I guess if they punted her Snitsky-style she might be counted out.
ReplyDeleteI have to give the writers credit, using Head & Shoulders to make the pin legal is one of the best wrestling jokes I have heard.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's honestly crazy how genuinely clever that is for something so silly
