While it was happening, a frequent topic of discussion in the Internet wrestling community was WWE's frequent booking of John Cena vs Randy Orton. Whether it be their first initial pay-per-view trilogy in 2007 and 2008, their lengthy feud in 2009, or their 2013-14 pair of matches, WWE would go back to Orton-Cena well so often it became a running joke online . It definitely felt like the company wanted so badly to have a long-running feud between the two biggest homegrown stars of the era, not unlike what they had with Steve Austin and The Rock in the 90s and early 2000s. Hell, they even did the exact same "lock eyes in opposite corners during the Royal Rumble" spot 10 years after Austin and Rock did it.
