Worst in the World: Akira Maeda vs Andre the Giant-NJPW Big Fighter Series 1986 (Day 15)

(Special thanks to Otter Empire for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) It's time to venture back into the wild world of pro-wrestling shoot fights; where wrestlers step into the ring for a scripted match, only for it to devolve into a real-life scrap, usually served up with a slice or two of good, old-fashioned beef. The last time I looked at a match-turned-fight, I covered the infamous bout between Antonio Inoki and the Great Antonio , in which the former strongman no-sold and stiffed Inoki, so Inoki responded by slapping & stomping him right out of the business. And today, I'll be taking a look at a match involving one of Inoki's New Japan counterparts, Akira Maeda. Trained in catch wrestling by the likes of Karl Gotch, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, and Inoki himself, Maeda was a legit fighter who would have no problem kicking ass if he needed to, something further exemplified by his 7-5 record...

Worst in the World: Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant-WrestleMania III

This is probably the hardest match I've had to write about. This match is bad. Very bad. But this very bad match is also one of the most important matches in the history of professional wrestling. Not only did it main event the WrestleMania that used to boast the largest WrestleMania attendance of all time (that was definitely not inflated in any way), but it features one of, if not the, most iconic moment in wrestling history. However, in order too look at this match from a technical standpoint, you have to take out the historical importance of it, and look at it for what it is, a truly bad wrestling match. With that being said, here it is; Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant-WrestleMania 3; WWF Championship on the line The match starts off with a long stare-down. Gorilla Monsoon says Andre has a look of disdain on his face, but he's very clearly making the face he always makes. Both push each other and throw strikes before Hogan goes for a bodyslam, but Andre's too heavy an...

Worst in the World: Ultimate Warrior vs Andre the Giant-Saturday Night's Main Event (11/25/1989)

networkplaylists.com Ultimate Warrior was one of those guys who if you put him in the ring with an experienced, talented veteran (Hogan, Savage, Rick Rude), he could have a good-to-great match. Andre the Giant is not one of those experienced talented veterans. In fact, Andre the Giant is probably the antithesis of an experienced, talented veteran. Even his match against Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania III, one of the most historic matches in history, is (in all honesty) a horrendous match that is only remembered for Hogan bodyslamming Andre. It's so bad that it's going to be showing up in this series eventually. But back to Andre and Warrior. When you put two high profile but awful wrestlers in the ring together, all you're really guaranteed is a long, bad match. And nowhere is this better shown in their match up from November 1989's edition of Saturday Night's Main Event. This match (for the Intercontinental Championship) curtain jerked a show where Macho Man's...

Worst in the World: Jake Roberts vs Andre the Giant-WrestleMania V

Pinterest.com I hate having to write about wrestlers I really like in this series. The fact that guys like Sting, Vader, Scott Steiner, and Scott Hall have all been featured here just upsets me. And now I can (unfortunately) add one of my favorite Hogan-era wrestlers to the list: Jake Roberts. Roberts was easily one of the best promos in history, and his feud with Randy Savage (oh look, another one who's been in this series!) is one of my personal favorites. Sadly, when you get put in the ring with Andre the Giant, you're bound to have a bad match, no matter how good you are. I know Andre is a legend in the business, and one of the most popular wrestlers of all time, but...have you ever actually seen this guy wrestle? I know I said this about Awesome Kong before, but Andre is almost completely immobile. The man spent 90% of his matches leaning on the ropes or in the corner, and could hardly even walk. You know that saying that a wrestler is so good they could have a good...
