Worst in the World: Vince Russo Ruins Nitro

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting these matches. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
Vince Russo. What can you really say about Vince Russo that hasn't already been said thousands of times online before? He's the man who headed up the WWF's creative team during the most successful period in the company's history, but was also the head of WCW's creative team during their complete collapse. Some people see him as a creative genius that wrote some of the highest-rated segments in WWF history. Others see him as a terrible writer whose ideas led to the death of WCW. He's easily one of, if not the most polarizing figures in the history of professional wrestling. But even the most adamant Vince Russo supporters have to agree on one thing...Vince Russo should never have stepped foot in a wrestling ring. Vince Russo began appearing on screen for WCW in April 2000, and while Russo as an on-screen character isn't exactly bad, his own writing did him no favors. This was around the same time he came up with That 70's Guy Mike Awesome and Hugh G. Rection, so even calling his writing "bad" is being too kind. And, as it tends to be with non-wrestling on-screen characters professional wrestling at the time, Vince Russo stepped in the ring on more than a few occasions for WCW. None of them are good. Now, non-wrestlers in non-wrestling matches are generally pretty bad. Hell, I've covered more than a few of them in this series. But it's not impossible for them to be good, or at the very least enjoyable. Just look at Russo's old boss, Vince McMahon. Yeah, he's had some duds, but he's also had the Steel Cage match with Steve Austin at St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the WrestleMania XIX match with Hulk Hogan, and even the WrestleMania X-7 match with son Shane. Are any of those matches technical masterpieces? Not by a long shot. But are they still memorable and far better than they have any business being? Absolutely. Some of Russo's matches are also memorable...just for the wrong reasons. Today, I'll be taking a look at the most infamous of Russo's matches. Thankfully, WCW never had the outright gull to put any of Russo's matches on pay-per-view and try to charge people money to watch them, so all three of these matches are from Nitro in 2000, the last full year Nitro was on the air. And considering WCW was putting matches like these on Nitro, that's not surprising.

Match #1

The first of Russo's matches I'll be covering comes from the June 6th episode of Nitro. If that date sounds familiar to you, that's because that is the same date that the match I covered last week, Kevin Nash running the "New Blood Gauntlet" took place on. WCW really loaded up this show with absolute shit. It's really not that surprising that the Monday Night RAW was doubling Nitro in the ratings around this time. Before Kevin Nash buried half the midcard six feet under, Vince Russo stepped into the ring for just the third time in his career, as he squared off with Ric Flair in a "Caged Heat" match. A Caged Heat match is just a Hell in a Cell match, only with Steel Cage rules. I don't know why they did it this way. As Russo was the leader of the New Blood and Flair was one of the top guys in the Millionaire's Club, the two crossed paths frequently during this time, in a feud that also saw Flair's son David turning on him and aligning with Russo, leading to this cage match. Let's get into this.
Russo is out first, followed by Flair along with his wife Beth and younger son Reid. The bell rings and the two lock up, with Russo taking control with a headlock. Russo follows up with a shoulder block and a celebration but flees into the ropes in a clunky manner when Flair recovers quickly. Russo low blows Flair with a mule kick before chopping him and mocking Flair's strut. Flair responds by ripping Russo's shirt off and chopping him before kicking him right in the balls. Flair follows up with a back body drop before dropping a knee, prompting Russo to scurry out of the ring. Flair follows him out of the ring, throwing him around and into the cage, adding in a few chops and punches for good measure. Suddenly, David Flair pops out from under the ring but immediately flees into the ring when his dad catches him. As Ric beats down David in the ring, Russo takes out the referee Charles Robinson and tries to leave through the cage door, only for Reid Flair to bite his fingers, prompting Russo to smack him through the fence. I'm not going to make a GIF of that because I have a strong feeling that Google is not a fan of child abuse on their site. I'm like 99.9% sure about that one.
Ric continues working over his son in the ring before tossing David over the top rope and out of the ring. As Ric continues to beat down David outside the ring, Russo grabs a ladder in an attempt to climb out through the hatch on top of the cage. Despite Flair's attempts to stop him, Russo makes it to the top of the cage, prompting Flair to follow him. Flair insinuates he's going to throw Russo off the cage before he chops him. Russo creates space by raking Flair's eyes and climbs back through the hole in the cage, but the ladder somehow got knocked over, leaving Russo hanging onto the roof. Flair stomps Russo's fingers, causing him to fall to the mat as Charles Robinson sets the ladder back up for Flair to climb down safely. Normally I'd say that that's biased refereeing, but since Lil' Naitch Charles Robinson has a pre-established history with Flair, I'll give it a pass. Ric beats down both Russo & David before locking in the Figure Four Leg Lock. Russo survives in the hold for OVER A MINUTE, far longer than a non-wrestler should be able to stay in a hold from an actual wrestler. Although, Russo probably only stayed in the hold for so long because someone might've missed their cue, because eventually, Flair gets hit with a BLOODBATH!
And no, Gangrel has not jumped ship to WCW. I guess because Russo's in the "New Blood" that it's only fitting that they would give people bloodbaths...I think. Actually, it's not a bloodbath, because Tony Schiavone calls it the "red of the New Blood" on commentary. It's so weird. You can show blood, groups can have "blood" in their name. Hell, Flair cut a promo earlier in this show where he says Russo is gonna bleed. You can do all that, but actually referring to blood as blood is too far? It makes no sense. David recovers and (because getting blood dropped on him completely incapacitates Ric for some reason) locks in Figure Four on his dad. Russo covers Flair as this happens and the referee counts the three to give the win to Russo.

The Verdict

You know, for a match with a Hell in a Cell cage, brawling on the roof, and a fucking BLOODBATH...this match is really dull. Russo's not good in the ring, obviously, and Flair really isn't doing anything all that good here. It's not even so beyond terrible, it's just boring. There's really no reason to watch this...at all.

Match #2

The second Russo match I'll be taking a look at happened three months after the Flair match on the September 4th episode of Nitro. This is the only non-singles match of Russo's I'll be taking a look at, as it's a four-on-four match, but don't worry, there's still plenty of shenanigans to be had in this match. Because this isn't a normal four-on-four match, it's, in my best William Regal voice...WARGAMES! To be fair, however, even calling this a WarGames match is pretty inaccurate. For starters, there's only one ring. Second, instead of the regular cage used for WarGames, WCW decided to bust out the old Ready to Rumble Triple Cage for this match. Because if they spent all that money to make it, you're damn sure they're going to use it as much as possible. And third, much like the OTHER worst WarGames match ever, this match as one singular prize in the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, which is hanging above the third and final cage. So it's a WarGames match, except it doesn't use two rings, it uses a different cage, and the prize can only be won by one person. This is a WarGames match in name only.
And to add to the confusion of this match, the line-up changes. The original match saw the team of Sting, Booker T, Goldberg, and Ernest "The Cat" Miller taking on the team of Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, and Russo himself. However, every member of the first team was forced to qualify for the match earlier in the night, and Miller lost, which put in KroniK (Bryan Clarke & Brian Adams) in the match instead...and then Russo just added Ron & Don Harris to the match when he was supposed to enter. So I don't know who's actually in the match, because multiple different sites (Wikipedia, cagematch.net, and profightdb.com) have different combinations of participants. This is already chaos. Also, Nash is the reigning world champion. As I said last time, getting world title shots in WCW in 2000 was extremely easy. Let's get into this. This is WarGames 2000: Russo's Revenge...that is the official tagline by the way.
Jeff Jarrett and Sting start the match, with Sting taking the early advantage with punches, a dropkick, and a clothesline sending Jarrett over the top rope. Outside the ring, Sting throws Jarrett into the cage multiple times before throwing him into the ring steps. Sting throws a ladder back into the ring, but Jarrett recovers and takes the fight to Sting. Sting quickly regains control by throwing Jarrett into the ladder in the corner before the timer hits zero, sending Scott Steiner in a face mask to the ring.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think he's wearing it because Goldberg legitimately broke his orbital bone, an injury that Steiner apparently didn't miss any time because of according to Lance Storm. Scott Steiner is a crazy man and I love him with all my heart.
Steiner prevents Sting from climbing through the roof before he & Jarrett hit Sting with the ladder as he hangs from the roof, causing him to fall and crotch himself on the top rope. Steiner & Jarrett beat down Sting as the timer runs down, sending both members of KroniK down to the ring. Steiner takes the opportunity to climb to the second cage, which is full of weapons, leaving Jarrett to get beat down by KroniK in the ring. Steiner uses bolt cutters to break the lock on the second cage's door, but KroniK manages to get to the second cage before he can escape. KroniK double presses Steiner into the roof of the second cage before giving him the softest gutbuster I've ever seen because Steiner might be wild, but he's not wild enough to take anything resembling a bump on this piece of shit cage.
It literally looks like it's going to collapse just by having people walk on it.
The timer hits zero again, bringing out Vince Russo accompanied by the Harris Brothers. Russo enters the cage as Ron & Don climb the outside of the cage. Sting locks in the Scorpion Death Lock on Jarrett as Steiner escapes back to the first cage while the KroniK brawls with the Harris Brothers in the second cage. This is already incomprehensible and there are still two more people who have yet to enter the match. Sting powerbomb Steiner as he hangs from the roof before hitting Russo with a Stiner Splash and locking in the Scorpion Death Lock on him. The Harris Brothers and KroniK continue to brawl in the second cage as the timer runs out and Kevin Nash makes his way down to the ring. I'd don't know why the heel team gets two people in a row. I'd say it goes against the rules, but this match is an absolute clusterfuck, so I don't know.
Nash picks up Steiner, but Sting quickly catches both men with a Stinger Splash. Nash & Steiner both dodge the follow-up attempt, allowing Nash to chokeslam Sting. Nash then teases chokeslamming Russo, Jarrett, and Steiner as KroniK and the Harris Brothers brawl out of the cage and into the crowd. In all this commotion, the timer hits zero as  Booker T makes his entrance. Booker gives Jarrett, Steiner, and Russo a scissor kick each but is quickly taken out with a big boot from Nash. Nash once again teases attacking Russo, this time with a Jackknife Powerbomb, before the final entrant Goldberg enters. Nash quickly leaves the ring as Goldberg runs through Jarrett & Steiner, who saved Russo from a beatdown. Russo floors Goldberg with a baseball bat before he, Jarrett, and Steiner handcuff Goldberg to the ropes. Meanwhile, Booker climbs up to the second cage, followed by Steiner, Sting, Jarrett, and Russo. Meanwhile, Kevin Nash is the smartest person in the match, not bothering with any kind of climbing or bumping, as he just chills in the first cage. He's too good for this shit and he knows it.
Booker grabs the title, fending off Jarrett before striking him with the belt. Booker does the same to Steiner before re-entering the second cage. Also, at this time, we see Sting has been handcuffed to the cage, which is something the commentators didn't even know happened. If so much is happening in a match at once that the commentators can't keep track of everything happening, then you're doing too much.
Jarrett & Steiner recover as they beat down Booker, with Jarrett breaking a guitar over his head. Steiner drops the world title down into the first cage, where Russo picks it up and taunts Goldberg with it. Suddenly, Ernest Miller runs down and kicks Russo in the head. Fairplay to Russo, he sells this like a champ. Miller celebrates with the title, only for Kevin Nash to enter the ring and immediately Jackknife him. Goldberg manages to break the handcuffs and mule kicks Nash, which is the first actual move Nash takes in this match. Goldberg runs through all the heels, even blocking a bat shot from Russo before flooring him and grabbing the title. Goldberg starts to leave the cage, only for Bret Hart to pop up out of the crowd and slam the door in his face. Steiner floors Goldberg with a pipe (which the camera misses) as Russo regains the title. Nash teases hitting Russo again...but SWERVE! Nash hugs Russo before Russo hands Nash the title and the entire group leaves the cage, giving Nash the win and the successful title defense.

The Verdict

Oh my god, fuck this match. It's completely incomprehensible. You cannot follow this match at all. Add on the order of entrances making no sense and people just making random appearances. I know I said that this match is barely even a WarGames match, but this is still far worse than the WarGames match at Fall Brawl '98. At least at Fall Brawl, you can understand what's going on. This is a mess and by far the worst WarGames match I've ever seen.

Match #3

And our final match on this post happened just three weeks after the clusterfuck WarGames match. It was during that match that we got plenty of shots of Vince Russo holding the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. But those were just teasing something that would never, ever happen. WCW would never actually put their top title on someone like Vince Russo right...is what I would say if they hadn't put that same world title on David fucking Arquette five months earlier on Thunder. So yes, WCW absolutely would put the world title on Vince Russo. And on the September 25, 2000 episode of Nitro, WCW had the opportunity to put the title on an untrained writer when Booker T defended his newly won title against Russo in another steel cage match. I have no idea why Russo worked so many cage matches in 2000. Also, even though they use the Caged Heat cage, this is still just called a steel cage match. I don't know. As far as I know, the reason Russo got a title shot is that...he wanted one and because he's an authority figure, he can give himself one. Makes sense. He also said he deserved a title shot because he's undefeated...That's right, Vince Russo has never lost in WCW. What a company. Let's get into this.
Russo is out first, decked out in full New York Giants football gear.
Given that the Giants are currently 1-5 on the year and at the bottom of the NFL's biggest punching bag of a division as I'm writing this, a bad football team's jersey being involved in Russo's bad writing is very fitting. Jeremy Borash on commentary hypes up Russo's 9-0 undefeated streak, which is not real. Russo is undefeated in the eight matches he's had in WCW, but two of them have been no contests, and the majority of them are multi-man matches. After Booker enters the cage, a portion of the locker room comes out and surrounds the cage. As Booker plays up the crowd, Russo pulls a baseball bat out of his pants and beats down Booker with the bat. Russo tries to make an early exit, but the cage door is held shut by Mike Awesome & Chavo Guerrero Jr. Russo beats Booker with the bat some more before grabbing a ladder from under the ring. Russo gives Booker another bat shot for good measure before climbing the ladder and getting on top of the cage through the natch. However, he is stopped by Mike Awesome climbing up the cage and Sting repelling down from the rafters, forcing Russo to drop back down into the ring.
After Russo falls, he gives Booker nothing on a bodyslam, but Booker still gets him up and slams him. Booker rips off Russo's helmet. Booker beats down on Russo before hitting a Harlem Side Kick and rolling Russo out of the ring. Booker throws Russo around the cage before beating him down some more. Suddenly, Lex Luger pops out of the crowd and slides a pole to Russo through the cage. Russo beats down Booker with the pole before putting his helmet back on and knocking out the referee for no reason. Russo continues beating down Booker as more referees & EMTs come out to attend to the original referee. Russo also assaults them for no reason until one of them reveals himself as Ric Flair in disguise.
Flair beats down Russo before throwing him in the ring and locking in the Figure Four on him, which Russo immediately breaks for some reason. Suddenly, the Natural Born Thrillers (all the young guys Russo tried to push) all run down and brawl with everyone at ringside, brawling to the back as Booker hits a scissor kick on Russo. Booker follows up with a Harlem Side Kick before grabbing a mic and telling Russo not to hate the player, but to hate the game. It's a lot cooler when he says it. And now we get one of the stupidest endings I've ever seen in wrestling.
Booker is about to leave the cage when Goldberg's music hits. Goldberg runs down and Booker, who is STANDING RIGHT AT THE DOOR, opens it and lets Goldberg in without leaving the cage.
Goldberg high-fives Booker before Scott Steiner runs down and slams the door in Booker's face. Booker responds by kicking the door into Steiner. Meanwhile, Russo has rolled out of the ring and charges at Booker. Goldberg intercepts Russo with a spear and...it happens.
As Booker is stepping out, Goldberg spears Russo through the cage. Goldberg & Booker celebrate as the commentators wonder who actually won the match. But...
Yep...Vince Russo did in fact win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. If Arquette winning the title didn't completely kill its credibility, then this did. And to make it even worse, the person that beat Russo for it was...nobody. Presumably, because he hit his head very hard on the guard rail after that spear, Russo vacated the belt the next week on Nitro. So this was all a gigantic waste of time.

The Verdict

On paper, this is exactly what you'd expect. A heel authority figure using underhanded tactics while the babyface champion defends his title against the odds. If Booker had actually won this match, it wouldn't be that bad. But of course, Booker did not win, and what would've been a random match is now one of the worst booking decisions in wrestling history. And for what? A .15 rise in the ratings for this show followed by a .3 drop the next week. What a terrible idea from a terrible creative team.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoy and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered in the Worst in the World in the comments. Next time, I'll be heading to the pre-show of Money in the Bank 2016 and looking at a match that should've been fine on paper, but ended up burning everyone involved. Well...some of them, anyway. Until then

  1. Thank you for doing this one! I know you said you wanted to do some of the matches that killed WCW, and maybe more specifically the ones that killed the World Title's credibility. The Fingerpoke and Arquette definitely warrant an entry there, but I was also thinking Bash at the Beach would be another fine addition to your collection.

Oh, and another idea I had: while we have our list of some of the worst matches in the history of professional wrestling, why not take a look at some of the worst promos as well? Or maybe not promos, but crappy booking decisions, bad gimmicks, storylines, etc. Because some good/decent matches have definitely been soured by awful booking decisions...looking at you, Black v Rhodes III

    1. The Bash at the Beach match definitely fits the bill for matches that killed WCW, I'll be sure to add that to the list.
As for a worst promos series, I've considered doing it in the past. However, I've recently started attending film school, and my schedule is a lot different than it has been the last few years. Maybe one day depending on how I balance my time between this blog and school, but for right now, I'm just going to focus on the matches here.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
