Worst in the World: Hornswoggle vs Chavo Guerrero-WWE Monday Night Raw (7/20/2009)

Special thanks to camilo jaramillo for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.
Throughout the history of wrestling, there has been no shortage of feuds & storylines that hurt the wrestlers involved rather the help them. Bad creative is very much a thing, and even a good booker can spit out a bad idea every now and then. However, what's less common than that is writing that is so bad and so harmful, it destroys a wrestler's career in the company. In WWE, there are two wrestlers whose careers got tanked by one storyline that have become the go-to names to bring up on the topic; Diamond Dallas Page after he was decimated throughout his feud with the Undertaker in 2001, and Zack Ryder after he got roped into being Kane's punching bag in the "Embrace the Hate" feud between him & John Cena. However, if there's one wrestler whose stock got dropped significantly thanks to one bad feud that doesn't get talked about enough, it's Chavo Guerrero.
A talented & charismatic wrestler, Chavo might not have been main event/world champion material like his uncle Eddie (and no, the ECW Championship does not count), but given his talents, he probably should've been working higher than the Cruiserweight division in WWE, a division few would argue the company really cared about. Maybe it's just because I've seen his work in Lucha Underground and how good he was there, but I really think more could've been done with the third-generation wrestler. And on that topic, after seeing how good he was in Lucha Underground, going back and seeing him feud with Hornswoggle is just depressing.
Chavo had quite a few bad moments in WWE (most notably Kerwin White) but if you want to find the storyline that ethered any chance of him being taken remotely seriously in the company, it's this one. The basis of this feud is that Chavo & Hornswoggle face-off in bad stipulation matches booked by RAW's various celebrity guest hosts, usually with Chavo at a disadvantage in some way, and it's funny because Hornswoggle is short. As if feuding with the leprechaun wasn't bad enough, Chavo spent the entirety of this feud getting jobbed out. Chavo & Swoggle wrestled six times on Monday Night Raw, with Chavo on the losing end every time. The worst part of it was how pointless it all was. Hornswoggle was never meant to be taken seriously, so him beating Chavo didn't elevate him, it only harmed Chavo. After this feud, Chavo did pretty much nothing of note before he requested & received his release in 2011. Over the course of two months, these two would have a Falls Count Anywhere match, a Texas Bullrope match, a Boxing match, a match where Chavo was blindfolded, a match where Chavo had one arm tied behind his back, and the match I'll be looking at, a "Sharp Dressed Man" Tuxedo match, as chosen by guest hosts ZZ Top, and none of them were ever funny. Let's get into this.
Hornswoggle is out first followed by Chavo, which is where we see that Chavo's tuxedo pants the legs sewn together.
Chavo struggles to get into the ring before the bell rings, despite Chavo's protests. Hornswoggle chases a waddling Chavo around the ring before Chavo trips, allowing Hornswoggle to easily remove his jacket & tie. Hornswoggle throws a kick that very blatantly doesn't connect, allowing him to take Chavo's shirt off. Chavo finally mounts some offense when he clotheslines Hornswoggle and takes off his jacket, whipping him with it afterward. Chavo follows up by removing both of Hornswoggle's shoes and pelting him with them, only for Hornswoggle to trip him up and remove Chavo's shoes & pants for the win. Michael Cole & Jerry Lawler proceed to make fun of Chavo's choice of boxers with peppers on them, even though it is the least embarrassing part of this match.

The Verdict

Just bad comedy all the way through. There is not a single thing to enjoy in this match, and all it did was hurt Chavo in the end. The only saving grace is that the match is short, so it won't go too far down on the list.

  1. Thank you for checking this out.

Poor chavo. He is the perfect representation about how the product of wwe can turned a decent wrestler into a bad joke. Santino marella is another example. All that happened with him was very tragic too.

    1. No problem. Yeah, sometimes once WWE finds out you can do comedy, you're stuck with it. Same thing happened to R-Truth.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
