Worst in the World: Toru Yano's Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Year

Well, the 2021 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Awards have been released, and I have a problem regarding the Worst Match of the Year award. Not with the fact that the Zombie Lumberjack match won, because it absolutely deserved it, but because I've already covered the match previously, I don't have the opportunity to cover it again now that the awards have been announced. Covering the Worst Match of the Year winner is generally something I do, so now, I have to go back to the drawing board. And low and behold, I've got something, courtesy of New Japan Pro-Wrestling's resident Sublime Master Theif; Toru Yano. Like I said the last time Yano popped up in the series, Yano's not exactly a bad wrestler, and I do find some of his comedy spots funny, but when the bar for in-ring work is a lot higher like it is in New Japan, Yano's work is a lot worse by comparison. Case and point; Yano has three of the lowest-rated matches from Dave Meltzer in 2021, and two of the lowest-rated from New Japan on Cagematch.net in 2021, and the only reason it doesn't have three is that one of the matches is under five minutes, making it ineligible for a rating on the site. Toru Yano did not have a great 2021, so let's take a look back at it.

Match #1

The first match from this collection of crap took place in February on Day 2 of The New Beginning in Hiroshima, where he teamed up with his CHAOS-stablemate Kazuchika Okada to face the Bullet Club's EVIL and Dick Togo. This is the match that doesn't go longer than five minutes, so it doesn't have a Cagematch rating, but still earned a DUD rating from Dave Meltzer. Let's see what made the match so bad that it earned one of the most well-reviewed wrestlers of all time in Okada his second appearance on the Worst in the World.
EVIL & Togo are out first. Even without the pomp of the Wrestle Kingdom setting, I still think EVIL's entrance is money. Okada & Yano follow, entering to Okada's fantastic music (obviously) before Yano gets his comically long intro. Okada & EVIL start in the ring, only for EVIL to try to dip out right away. Okada rushes him to stop him, which prompts Yano & Togo to brawl at ringside. Okada hits a snapmare followed by a dropkick before tossing EVIL out of the ring. Okada whips EVIL into the barricade before shoving his boot into his face. Okada throws EVIL into the barricade again, but a Tombstone Piledriver attempt is blocked, allowing EVIL to throw Okada into the barricade. EVIL repeats the process before choking Okada with a chair, all as the referee counts to 20, ending the match in a double countout. EVIL and Togo make their way up the ramp, but Okada sprints up the ramp and hits EVIL in the back with a chair. As Yano and the young lions hold Okada back, he grabs a microphone. Okada demands a singles match with EVIL right now, which EVIL accepts. I won't be covering it here, but based on the 1 1/2 star rating from Dave Meltzer and the 3.74 rating on Cagematch.net, I'm going to assume that it is not very good.

The Verdict

It is quite literally filler, and that's it. You get two moves and a brawl to set up a completely different match, and that's it. Those two moves are done well, but that's all I can really say.

Match #2

Our next match takes place one month later on Day 6 of the New Japan Cup. It's a second-round match-up pitting Yano against the Great O-Khan. O-Khan had just recently returned to New Japan after two years with RevPro in England as part of his excursion, quickly joining up with Will Ospreay and Ospreay's girlfriend Bea Priestly to form the Empire (later the United Empire) O-Khan has been decent since his return but doesn't really set the world on fire. His best matches have been with guys like Kota Ibushi and Tomohiro Ishii, and needless to say, Toru Yano is not on the level of Ibushi or Ishii. This match did the opposite of setting the world on fire, receiving a DUD rating from Dave Meltzer and a 4.38 rating on Cagematch. Let's get into this.
The bell rings, prompting Yano & O-Khan to shout at each other. Yano eventually dips out of the ring, grabbing a roll of tape from under the ring. O-Khan opts to turn around, allowing his hands to be taped behind his back. Yano then decides to rip a turnbuckle pad off and take a swing, only for O-Khan to duck and easily break free from the tape, prompting Yano to dip out of the ring again. O-Khan goads Yano back in the ring by laying down, which leads to Yano stomping away at him. O-Khan stops the stomps by grabbing a heel hook, but Yano breaks the hold by getting to the ropes. O-Khan throws Yano into the ropes, but Yano holds on and ducks a clothesline, allowing him to smack O-Khan in the back of the head. After Yano grabs his hair braid, O-Khan regains control with a shoulder block, prompting Yano to roll out of the ring again. O-Khan grabs the chair Yano brings down to the ring and takes a seat, prompting Yano to take a chair from the timekeeper's table and take a seat in the entranceway.
The referee starts to count Yano out, prompting O-Khan to demand a young lion grab Yano's KOPW Trophy. The KOPW is a championship represented by a trophy that New Japan introduced in 2020 and is focused around gimmick matches, unlike the rest of New Japan. It has a 0.77 rating on Cagematch. Do what you want with that information. The referee restarts the count for some reason as O-Khan threatens to stomp the trophy, which brings Yano back into the ring. O-Khan gives the trophy to referee Red Shoes Unno before offering a handshake to Yano. Yano shakes his hand, but O-Khan squeezes the hand, sending him to the ground so he can stomp Yano's hand. O-Khan follows up with a gutwrench suplex for a near fall before locking in an arm-triangle choke. O-Khan keeps the hold locked in as he takes Yano to his feet before taking him back down with a takeover, only for Yano to break the hold by getting to the ropes.
O-Khan throws Yano into the turnbuckle Yano exposed before sitting on him, pressing him into the buckle before Unno forces him to break. O-Khan tries to cover Yano with his foot on his chest, but Unno refuses to count. I'm not sure why. O-Khan decides instead to stomp Yano before trying to make him kiss his boot, but Yano avoids that and an attempt by O-Khan to throw him into the buckle again. Yano then dodges a charging O-Khan, sending him into the buckle before hitting a nice fireman's carry takedown followed by a belly-to-belly suplex. The two trade forearms before Yano hits an inverted atomic drop, followed by a slingshot into the exposed buckle for a near fall. O-Khan comes back with a bicycle kick and three double chops, but an attempt at a claw hold is blocked by Yano, who rolls up O-Khan for a near fall. Both men apply a claw hold to the other, but O-Khan gets the better of the exchange. Yano fights out and sends O-Khan out of the ring, allowing Yano to tie O-Khan's braid to the barricade, opting for the countout win. But O-Khan was prepared, as he has a tiny pair of scissors stored in his boot and frees himself. O-Khan then tries to stab Yano with the scissors, but Yano avoids, knocking over the Unno in the process, and low blows O-Khan before rolling him up for the three and the win. Kevin Kelly pretends that his Wi-Fi went out to pretend he didn't see the low blow.

The Verdict

Honestly, not that bad. There isn't too much substance to the match, which is pretty much the case for Toru Yano matches in general, but I won't pretend like there wasn't some enjoyment out of this. It's not really worth watching, but I didn't dread it, which is more than can be said about the vast majority of the matches I've covered here.

Match #3

The final match in this post is the worst-reviewed of the bunch, earning a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer and a 4.06 on Cagematch.net. Taking place on Day 1 of the 2021 G1 Climax, it pits Yano against KENTA. KENTA is probably better known to more causal fans from his five-year, injury-plagued stint in WWE and NXT as Hideo Itami. While he's not quite in his prime (i.e. his Pro Wrestling NOAH days), he's still more than capable of having a standout match when you put him in the ring with the right opponent. Once again, however, Toru Yano is not that opponent.
Yano's out first with his comically long introduction. KENTA responds by handing the ring announcer Makoto Abe a pamphlet for his own comically long intro, an intro that's full of lies according to commentator Chris Charlton. That's pretty great. KENTA demands the referee extensively check Yano for any foreign objects...which is proven valid when he finds a roll of tape in his knee pad. In response, Yano demands KENTA be searched, which leads to the referee finding KENTA's own roll of tape stuffed in his trunks. The bell finally rings, prompting KENTA to immediately roll out of the ring. KENTA stalls, demanding Yano give him space before he gets back in the ring. Yano eventually goes out after him, only for KENTA to sprint back into the ring. When Yano re-enters, KENTA rolls back out. Yano gets fed up and leaves the ring, walking back up the ramp as KENTA urges the referee to count him out. Yano ends up rolling back into the ring, only for KENTA to stomp away at him. KENTA strikes away at Yano before whipping him into the ropes, only for Yano to grab hold of the ropes to stop a bounce back. Yano ducks a clothesline and rakes the eyes, but KENTA copies him and grabs the ropes off an Irish whip.
KENTA dips out of the ring and grabs Yano's disinfectant spray bottle, squirting Yano in the face when he follows him out of the ring. With Yano blinded, KENTA beats Yano up the entranceway and onto the stage, where he has hidden another roll of tape on the set. KENTA tries to tape Yano to the set and get a count-out victory, which is the same way he won their match-up at last year's G1. That match also has a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer. Might have to go back and look at that one, as well. Yano has learned, however, and kicks KENTA before tossing the tape into the crowd. KENTA regains control, striking Yano down before grabbing another roll of tape from a different piece of the set. KENTA successfully tapes Yano's hand to the set before sprinting back to the ring. The referee begins to count Yano out, but Yano manages to free himself and avoid the countout. KENTA quickly pounces on Yano, punching and stomping away at him before Yano recovers and throws KENTA into the corner. This is just so Yano can rip off a turnbuckle pad, which KENTA responds to with a spin kick. Yano comes back with an inverted atomic drop followed by a slingshot into the buckle for a near fall.
Yano tries to whip KENTA into the buckle, but KENTA reverses, sending Yano into the exposed corner. KENTA follows up with a big boot and a dropkick before hitting a diving double stomp, but Yano kicks out. KENTA goes for the Go 2 Sleep, but Yano slips out and grabs KENTA's hair. KENTA does the same to Yano, getting the better of him before tossing him out of the ring. KENTA tries to whip Yano into the barricade, but Yano reverses it and sends KENTA into the guardrail. Yano tries to get his revenge by grabbing yet another roll of tape, but the referee's intervention allows KENTA to shove Yano into the ref, knocking him out. KENTA goes under the ring to grab YET ANOTHER roll of tape. KENTA tapes Yano's hands together before throwing him under the ring. KENTA throws the ref back in the ring and tells him to count, only for Yano to roll out the other side, sneak into the ring, low blow KENTA (Kevin Kelly's monitor "goes out"), and roll him up, but KENTA kicks out. Yano hits another low blow when KENTA goes for a waistlock (Kelly's monitor "goes out" again) allowing him to pin KENTA with an inside cradle for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Just like Yano's match with Jado in the prior year's New Japan Cup, this match between Yano & KENTA is among the worst I've seen from New Japan. It's not quite as bad as Yano/Jado, primarily because KENTA is nowhere near as broken down as Jado is, but it still follows most of what's wrong with that match. Blatant stalling & brawling to make up for the lack of wrestling. There's still more actual wrestling in this match than the Jado match, again because KENTA can still work, but the amount of padding this match has makes it a tough watch.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. In two weeks, I'll be going back to 2014 and taking a look at one of the most historically significant matches I've ever covered for the series. Until then...

  1. I think it'll be the Royal Rumble match

My next suggestion is the infamous Ghastly match between Act Yasukawa and Yoshiko at Stardom 2/22/2015

    1. It is not the Royal Rumble match, but you're in the right period of 2014.
Also, I will definitely take a look at Yasukawa vs Yoshiko. That's one I've been anticipating getting recommended because of how infamous it is. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. If you're doing assaults disguised as matches (seemingly only because they're worse than Andre/Maeda on principle) you could fit in Mickie Knuckles vs. Mike Levy in IWA-MS. Maybe also the match where Sexy Star tried to break Rosemary's arm, but that's a lesser example because there were two extra workers in that match who wanted to work

    3. The Mickie Knuckles/Mike Levy incident is a match that I completely forgot about, but I'll definitely have to cover it now that you've reminded me of it.
I'll also take a look at the match with the Sexy Star/Rosemary incident, not just because of the ending, but if I remember correctly that match in general is pretty rough. Thanks for the suggestions!

    4. Holy moly, I just read up and watched a video on the Knuckles/Levy thing and IWA-MS as a whole. I feel so uncomfortable right now, that whole saga is disgusting. John Williams/Ian Rotten is a garbage human being, my goodness. How the hell did these guys land Punk, Hero, Claudio, Styles, Moxley, and more? Surprised it took this long for the promotion to fall apart again, just saw that Jake Crist burned the championship in a bag because Rotten didn't pay him.

    5. It's terrible. Easily one of the worst things I've ever seen in wrestling, if not the worst. As for why the guys you mentioned would work IWA-Mid South, I think it's a combination of reasons. Exposure was probably a big reason, given most of them first appeared in IWA-MS early in their careers. I'm also guessing Ian Rotten had connections with people that made bringing in guys like that possible. Dave Prazak, in particular, is generally credited with bringing Punk & Colt Cabana to the company. Given that, it's not that surprising that once those guys would end up in somewhere like Ring of Honor, their number of IWA-MS appearances go down as well. Even recently, guys like Mance Warner and Calvin Tankman have gone from IWA-MS mainstays to moving on to places like GCW and MLW.
The Jake Crist drama has definitely put the company in a serious state of limbo. IWA-MS has gone on hiatus before, but not quite like this. It's especially telling that John Wayne Murdoch, someone's who been with the company for a long time now, pulled out of King of the Deathmatch before it got cancelled and has been appearing in GCW and ICW No Holds Barred more often than IWA-MS.

  2. Now I'm intrigued to see what this match is!

Yeah from a depressing career end for Yasukawa and the unprofessional behavior/recklessness that caused said career from Yoshiko you definitely got an infamous match in the making!

  3. Okay there we go, should be able to comment now! Been having trouble commenting for a bit, don't know why. But I come to you with another suggestion in my quest to find the worst matches from the best wrestlers: CM Punk vs Ryback. Whether it is HIAC 2012, Battleground 2013, or HIAC 2013 you want to do, or all three, I think that is a feud that deserves to be acknowledged for not really being good in terms of match quality.
PS: Trying to find a bad Bryan Danielson match is REALLY hard.

    1. I thought Punk/Ryback's TLC match on Raw Jan 7 2012 was pretty good. I do agree that the matches you mentioned where awful and the feud was not really good.

Bryan Danielson did have some crappy matches back at WWE 1. Big Cass (Backlash 2018) 2. Team Hell No vs Bludgeon Brothers (Extreme Rules 2018) 3. The Miz (Super Showdown 2018).

    2. I'll definitely take a look at the Punk-Ryback pay-per-view trilogy. I do agree with the other reply that their TLC match on Raw was pretty fun. Thanks for the suggestions!
As for Danielson, not surprising that finding a bad match from him is hard. He's just that good. Again, like in the previous reply, the match with Big Cass at Backlash is probably the worst match he's had. The Team Hell No vs Bludgeon Brothers match and the match with The Miz at Super Showdown aren't very good either, but those are mostly bad for the booking in my opinion.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
