Worst in the World: Agony & Ivory

There are quite a few wrestlers who could be categorized as having come up through the business during the wrong time. Whether it be high work rate performers like X-Pac, Dean Malenko, or even Hakushi/Jinsei Shinzaki that would fit in seamlessly in today's thriving, high-energy independent scene, or giants like Omos that stick out amongst the fast-paced current landscape but could easily be slotted into a 1980s card as a Goliath for the babyface to topple. Everybody's got someone in the back of their mind that fits the bill, and today, I'd like to present my case for Ivory. Sure, maybe by today's standards Ivory is on the level of women like Sasha Banks, Asuka, or Mayu Iwatani, but during her time, she was easily one of, if not the best women's wrestler in the WWF during her career, both in-ring and promo wise. And yet, she never really got the flowers she deserved, largely because of the time she wrestled. Ivory wrestled primarily through two distinct periods in her career. The first was during the rise of Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling and later the Powerful Women of Wrestling, both of which were the brainchildren of David McLane, a man whose sole life goal seems to be trying to make that obscenely silly, heavily gimmicked, neon-drenched brand of women's wrestling mainstream. But that's a topic for another time. For this post, I'll be focusing on Ivory's time during the Attitude Era, and her time with the Women's Championship.
With that said, you might be thinking something like "yeah, wait a minute, Ivory was a three-time Women's Champion. How can she be underappreciated when she was that decorated?" While it's true that Ivory had three reigns with the WWF Women's Championship, which is more than can be said for other under-valued female wrestlers in the WWF/WWE like Gail Kim, Victoria, and Ember Moon, it's those title reigns that provide the biggest examples of how misused she was. It's not a hot take to say that the Women's Championship was not a title that was taken seriously during the Attitude Era. This was a time when women who were either untrained or barely trained ran the division and the title was defended in evening gown matches & "lumberjill snowbunny" matches, among others. Hell, the first time Ivory won the title, she won it from Debra, who had won it herself in an evening gown match...that she lost, but got awarded the title anyway because Sable & the WWF were at odds backstage. This was not a great time for women's wrestling. As such, each time Ivory held the Women's Championship, some absolute nonsense was involved when she lost it. Let's take a look at the regular misuse of Ivory.

Match #1: No Mercy 1999

The first match I'll be taking a look at is Ivory's match from No Mercy 1999. As I mentioned before, Ivory was in her first Women's Championship reign after defeating Debra on the June 8 episode of Raw is War, and has defended the title against the likes of Tori, Luna Vachon, and Jacqueline since. Ivory had held the title for 131 days (or 124 in canon due to a tape delay) heading into No Mercy. And who would Ivory be defending the title against here? The Fabulous Moolah...76-year-old Fabulous Moolah. Moolah is, of course, an alleged garbage human being who has been accused of financially & sexually exploiting women she trained, all while keeping women's wrestling under her boot for her entire career even though she was very bad. She was also a WWF Hall of Famer and a multi-time Women's Champion in her own right, but I feel like that's less than important than the first part. This match comes about after Moolah & Mae Young beat Ivory in a handicap evening gown match on Raw is War. The match earned a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer and was too short to be eligible for a match on Cagematch.net. Moolah is basically a comedy character at this point in her WWF career, so did the company really care so little about the Women's Championship that they would put it on a septuagenarian? Let's take a look.
Before the match, Ivory cuts a promo backstage saying Moolah and Mae Young need to remember how to get back to the retirement home. Moolah comes down to the ring first with Mae Young at her side. Ivory jumps Moolah as soon as the bell rings, dropkicking Moolah while her back is turned (which Moolah sells about two seconds after it happens) and getting a two count. Ivory follows up with one of the two moves Moolah knows, a hairmare (a snapmare by pulling the hair), before hitting a leg drop for another two count. Ivory follows up with an elbow drop for a third two-count before Moolah fights back, throwing three punches (one of which looks any good) before hitting two hairmares for a two count. I was only half-joking when I said Moolah only knew two moves.
A very stunted Irish whip reversal sends Moolah into the corner, but Moolah slowly raises her knee to "catch" a "charging" Ivory, sending her to the mat. Moolah goes for a splash off the first rope, but Ivory dodges it and tries to pin Moolah with her feet on the ropes. Mae Young, however, breaks up the pin by kicking Ivory in full view of the referee, which is not a DQ. Ivory punches Young to the ground before tossing Moolah out of the ring. Young gets back up on the apron, only for Ivory to dropkick her back down before going for a very bad suicide spot. Ivory comes up short and Moolah doesn't really catch her at all. Ivory throws Moolah into the announce table, but Moolah blocks a toss into the barricade, instead throwing Ivory over it and into the crowd. Ivory fights back, hitting a crossbody off the barricade before Young tries to get involved, grabbing Ivory by the hair before getting punched down to the ground. Ivory throws Moolah back in the ring before grabbing her title. Ivory tries to hit Moolah, only for Young to stop her, getting hit with the title herself instead. Moolah takes the opportunity to very sloppily & very slowly roll up Ivory for the three, the win, and the title.

The Verdict

Horrible, as to be expected. The Fabulous Moolah wasn't any good in the ring in her prime, so putting her in the ring when she was in her mid-70s was never going to produce anything close to a good match, but this still happened, so I have to grade accordingly. Ivory is doing all the work her, bumping better than she had business doing for a 76-year-old. She and Mae Young are really the only reasons this match isn't a complete trainwreck. But this is still a pitiful match to go back and watch.

Match #2 Armageddon 1999

Thankfully, the reign of 76-year-old Fabulous Moolah as Women's Champion did not last long, as Moolah dropped the title back to Ivory eight days later. Moolah, however, would get another win over Ivory at Survivor Series because this company is the dirt worst at times. Ivory would hold the title for another 48 days until Armageddon that same year. And as if defending the title against a 76-year-old wasn't bad enough, this match at Armageddon would be a Fatal 4-Way Evening Gown pool match for the title. Just zero credibility whatsoever for the Women's Championship. Ivory would defend the title against the only other trained wrestler in the match in Jacqueline, Miss Kitty (a.k.a. The Kat), who was a valet and not a wrestler, and B.B/Barbara Bush, a storyline E.M.T. who got attacked by Ivory and a woman who doesn't have a Wikipedia page, to show how significant her career in the biggest wrestling company in the world was. Let's take a look at yet another devaluing of the Women's Championship.
Prior to the match, the special guest referees come out. It's the Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young because I cannot escape these two in this post. Miss Kitty & Jacqueline fight before B.B. has even made her entrance, with Kitty tossing Jacqueline off the elevated deck and into the pool. During Ivory's entrance, the camera completely misses Moolah & Young pushing Kitty and B.B. into the pool. Watching women fight in the pool is literally the entire reason they are doing this match, how do you not catch that on the main camera? The three women in the pool splash each other, which Ivory responds to by throwing her heels at them. This evening gown pool match has officially escalated.
The three drag Ivory into the pool as soon as the bell rings. B.B. chases Kitty around the pool as Ivory & Jacqueline tussle. I like to think the two actually trained wrestlers decided to stick together and not deal with the rest of the match. The crowd starts chanting "SHOW YOUR PUPPIES" as all three women team up to rip Jacqueline's gown off, eliminating her from the match. Ivory quickly jumps on B.B. before dunking her head underwater. There is clearly no love lost in this evening gown pool match. Kitty then gets involved with the attempted drowning before the two rip B.B.'s gown off to eliminate her. Ivory then tries & fails to rip B.B.'s bra off after she has climbed out onto the deck, allowing Kitty to yank her back down into the pool. This is clear disobedience to the strict rules of the evening gown pool match to show that Ivory is the heel. Also, this was B.B.'s one and only match. The crowd boos not getting to see any more of B.B. as Ivory & Kitty fight in the pool, ending with Kitty ripping Ivory's dress off for the win and the title. After the match, Kitty says everyone came to see her get naked, so she takes off her dress and legitimately flashes the crowd before Sgt. Slaughter covers her with a towel and escorts her to the back. Mae Young then takes her dress off just because, so Slaughter runs back out and covers her with a towel as well.

The Verdict

I get it, it's an eye candy match and the actual wrestling doesn't really matter, appeal to the demographic you're trying to pull in with this all you want. That being said, this is still technically a match, and as a match, it is awful. Nothing to be gained from this outside of the eye candy.

Match #3: WrestleMania X-7

For the final match of this post, we have to jump forward to 2001 to WrestleMania X-7, largely considered both the greatest WrestleMania and the greatest pay-per-view the WWF ever put on. However, if there is one match on X-7 that stands out as being the worst on the card, it's the Women's Championship match, seeing Ivory defending the title against Chyna. By this point, Ivory has won the title for a third time and has joined up with Right to Censor, a group of wrestlers opposed to the WWF's raunchy product that served as a stand-in for the Parents Television Council. Naturally, they objected to Chyna appearing in Playboy, leading to Ivory and fellow member Val Venis piledriving Chyna, injuring her neck. Ivory & Chyna would face off in a title match at the Royal Rumble this same year, which ended with Chyna re-injuring her neck and allowing Ivory to retain the title. They face off one last time at WrestleMania, with Right to Censor banned from ringside. We've got a story, which is rare for a women's championship in the WWF around this time, but this match still disappointed, earning a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer. Let's take a look at it
Say what you will about the Right to Censor theme...it is effective. As Chyna enters the ring and the referee gets between the two, Ivory clutches her title closely. After Chyna shoves the referee out of the way, Ivory clocks Chyna with the belt as the bell rings. Ivory kicks away at Chyna before hitting an elbow drop. Ivory follows up with strikes that don't look good, but Chyna gains the upperhand when she blocks a kick and tosses Ivory across the ring. Chyna beats down Ivory in the corner before hitting a hip toss followed by two clotheslines. Chyna follows up with a back body drop before hitting a powerbomb. Chyna makes the cover...only to pull Ivory's shoulders up at two. Chyna picks Ivory up and gorilla presses her before making the cover for the three, the win, and the title.

The Verdict

Easily the least aggregious of the three matches I covered, and while it's basically a total squash match (which is even more aggregious given that it's on a pay-per-view, let alone a WrestleMania) I'm not going to put it very low. Nothing all that bad really happens outside of some bad strikes from Ivory, and overall, it's not the worst in the world.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. In two weeks, I'll be taking a look at a match from TNA's Destination X 2005, which featured a confusing end to one of the company's new monster heels. Stay tuned...

  1. Aight I've debated on this, but I'm gonna request Ric Flair's Final Match. It should have never happened and he looked awful in it

    1. I'll be honest, when that match first got announced, I was already 99% sure I'd end up covering it before it even happened. I never added it to the list because I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but yeah, it absolutely should not have happened. I'll definitely take a look at it. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. Ric even confirmed he passed out twice during the match!

  2. Do you plan on covering Antonio Inkuki vs Muhhamad Ali?

    1. I've thought about it. I've kind of been on the fence about because it's technically not a wrestling match (it's a shoot exhibition match), but I thought I might cover it as sort of a special edition in the series that doesn't get included in the actual rankings based on how it's a pretty interesting match-up in wrestling history

    2. Ok, I just figured it would be something for your list due to it's infamy, how it's screwy ending resulting in one of the most pissed off crowds ever, being a bad match/fight in general and because it is part of wrestling history. But thank you for your input!

Here's a proper stinker for your rankings: Kidman vs Ric Flair (WCW Thunder May 3rd 2000)

    3. I'll be honest, I just looked up the episode that match took place after seeing this comment, and after finding out what "New York Rules" was, I think I have to cover that entire episode of Thunder. It sounds like it is absolute insanity. Thank you for the suggestion, and also for bringing this episode to my attention.

    4. Yeah after hearing about "New York Rules" and seeing what it was it makes me more thankful that Russo ain't working in any promotion. You're welcome man, Anytime!

  3. Just so everyone is clear about just how poorly the women's division was booked back in the day, the Wrestlemania X-7 match was worse than the Gimmick Battle Royal. Let that sink in.

Also, did some background research on the next installment. I am extremely confused as to what exactly TNA's gameplan was there.

    1. It's bizarre. It legit feels like they gave up on him mid-match.

  4. Oh, and another possible recommendation for our side list: Brawl for All!

    1. I had actually planned on doing the Brawl for All last year as a sort of a New Years special, but I ended up not planning out enough time to get it all covered so I scrapped it. Now that t's been recommended I can definitely plan it out more in advance. Thanks for the suggestion!

  6. I don't think you've ever entered the classic era of British wrestling, so here's one for you. Credited as "the match that took wrestling off British TV" (incorrectly), it's Kendo Nagasaki and Blondie Barratt vs. Steven Regal and Robbie Brookside in 1988. Between Barratt being too incompetent to do more than one move correctly, and the hokey ending where Kendo Nagasaki HYPNOTISES Brookside to attack his partner, it's a low mark in the golden age of wrestling in the country.

    1. I'll add it to the list. I think you're right about not venturing into classic British wrestling. Admittedly, I haven't seen too much British wrestling from that era, so I'm always down to broaden my wrestling horizons. Thanks for the suggestion!

  7. Unfortunately chyna seems to blame for the terrible match at WM17 - she seemingly forgot she had an injured neck and decided to do all power moves while no selling Ivorys offence against her injured neck in the beginning. Just silly from her. It was clear she didn't try because she didn't like wresting women which is a shame because Ivorys 3rs reign was one of the best in the titles history

    1. Honestly, it didn't even seem like the company put any thought into that whole injury angle. I went back and watched the promo video for their match at the Royal Rumble, and in it Chyna pretty much says she had neck fusion surgery from the piledriver, which considering how quickly she recovers from it (around two months) doesn't add up. Kyle O'Reilly just had neck fusion surgery a few days ago and he's out indefinitely, for reference. The bad match is probably a combination of Chyna (in Jim Ross' words) feeling she was above wrestling women and the WWF not really caring about the women outside of Chyna, Lita, and Trish at the time

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
