Worst in the World: Rachael Evers vs Marti Belle-Mae Young Classic (Episode 2)

(Special thanks to E.Y.D for suggesting these matches. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
In 2016, WWE held the Cruiserweight Classic, a unique tournament for the company, as most of the 32 participants were not signed to the company at the time. It proved to be a big success, with 16 of the unsigned participants earning contracts with the company to revive the Cruiserweight division on Monday Night Raw, and showcased some fantastic wrestling from some of the best cruiserweights in the world. This tournament also paved the way for WWE to run more tournaments featuring talent not signed to the company, with the inaugural United Kingdom Championship Tournament happening in January of the following year before the company would hold the inaugural Mae Young Classic the same year. Like the Cruiserweight Classic, the Mae Young Classic was a 32-participant tournament, with the field comprised of members of the NXT roster and women wrestling on the independents. This was also hit, as it was brought back the following year, and paved the way for many of the women featured to sign with the company. There was, however, one match from the tournament that stood out for all the wrong reasons.
That match was the first-round match-up between Rachael Evers and Marti Belle that aired on the second episode of the tournament. Both women were among the independent workers in the tournament, as Evers, better known as Rachael Ellering and the daughter of Paul Ellering, had made a handful of appearances on NXT in the years prior to the tournament while working the independents, while Belle had just come off a two-year run in TNA. Both women are fairly solid workers, so at the very least this should have been a passable match. However, it proved to be a bad match-up, and currently holds just a 1.64 out of 10 rating on Cagematch.net. The match went so poorly that, reportedly, the decision was made during the match to not only change the finish, but the winner as well, as Belle was reportedly set to win and advance to the next round, only for Evers to end up winning the match. Could the match really be that bad? Let's take a look.
The match starts with Belle avoiding a lock-up with Evers, backing into the corner. After doing the spot again, the two lock up, with Belle forcing Evers into the corner. The two exchange headlocks before Belle hits a knee lift and a butterfly suplex for a one count. Evers responds with a waistlock takedown followed by a pump kick for a two-count. Evers follows up with an STO followed by a springboard leg drop for a one count. Belle retreats to the apron before pulling Evers head down onto the top rope. Belle follows up with a Blockbuster-style neckbreaker while Evers is seated for a one count. Belle begins to strike away at Evers before hitting a clothesline for a two-count. Belle throws Evers into three of the corners, but an attempt to hit all four gets blocked by Evers, who rams Belle's head into the turnbuckles before hitting forearm strikes, a pump kick, an enziguri that Jim Ross calls a scissor kick on commentary, and a senton. Evers follows up with a spinebuster for a near fall before hitting another pump kick, which is the second move Jim Ross has incorrectly referred to as a scissor kick.
Evers hits a really cool sitout spinebuster from a Fisherman's suplex position, but Belle kicks out. Belle turns the tables, throwing Evers into the ropes before hitting the Marti Makeover (a forward Russian leg sweep aka The Stroke), but Evers kicks out. Evers then quickly rolls up Belle for the three and the win.

The Verdict

I don't think I disliked this match as much as everyone else seemed to, but this is still a very bland, uneventful match. Outside of one cool move from Evers, there's really nothing interesting happening in this match. Not really worth watching.

  3. I might need to watch this one myself, because from how you described it in your review, it doesn't seem that terrible of a match. Not a lot happens, but it doesn't seem like a trash match. There has to be something more to this, even more than the simple changing of the finish/winner.

    1. It not outright terrible in my opinion (better than it's rating on Cagematch suggests) it's just kind of uneventful. It was a taped show so it's possible WWE went back and cleaned it up in editing to make it look better.

  4. There it is! Been waiting for my first ever suggestion to get featured.

This match has a special place in my memory, because it was the first time I almost fell asleep watching a wrestling match.

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
