Worst in the World: The Great American Trash: The Sequel!

Last year on the 4th of July, I took a look at the 2004 edition of the Great American Bash, one of the worst pay-per-views WWE has ever held. Well, one year later, WWE would once again hold the Great American Bash, and it was still bad. Granted, it's a slight improvement over the previous year's event, and the card definitely feels more pay-per-view worthy than 2004's (there's not a Luther Reigns or a Mordecai match in sight), but it's still not a very good show overall. The show currently sits at a 3.47 rating on Cagematch, putting it a lot closer to the bottom of WWE's pay-per-view rated on the site than it is to the top. Today, I'll be looking at four matches from this show.

Match #1: The Undertaker vs Muhammad Hassan

We'll be skipping over the first three matches, a mostly forgettable Tag Team title match where MNM defended against Road Warrior Animal & Heidenreich, a fine enough match between Booker T and Christian, and a decent United States title match between Orlando Jordan and Chris Benoit, to jump right to the fourth match on the card. Usually, when I cover multiple matches from one show, I tend to get a pretty light match that doesn't require a ton of background to kick it off. This is not that. Not by a long shot. It's time to talk about Muhammad Hassan. In December of 2004, WWE would call up developmental wrestler Mark Coppani (then using the ring name Mark Magnus) under the gimmick of Muhammad Hassan, an Arab American who spoke out against prejudice Arab Americans faced following the September 11th terrorist attacks in 2001. Xenophobia towards Arabs & Arab Americans and Islamaphobia was, and still is, a legitimate problem in America following 9/11, but if you think for one second WWE was going to tell a story around that with even the tiniest touch of subtlety and nuance, then you would be sorely mistaken.
Hassan's words & actions towards America & Americans and their treatment of Arab Americans led to conflict. This ranged from Jim Ross telling Hassan & his manager Daivari to "love it or leave it", a phrase that sprung up in America in response to dissent against the Vietnam War and is generally used to dismiss criticism of the country as unpatriotic, which, given the context of what Hassan is saying is not a good look, to everyone, heels and faces alike, ganging up to eliminate him as soon as he entered the ring in the 2005 Royal Rumble, it's clear the intent was to rile up fans with a new anti-American heel, but with a storyline that painted speaking out against prejudice as a bad thing. Looking back at it in 2023, it's rough. But that was just the beginning...
After debuting & spending the first six months of his career on Raw, Hassan, alongside Daivari, were drafted to SmackDown. Almost immediately, he'd be booked to feud with The Undertaker, with the two facing off at the Great American Bash, and the winner becoming the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship. Mark Coppani himself has said the plan was for Hassan to not only beat Taker, but to go on and defeat Batista for the title at SummerSlam. However, we never got to that moment because of an infamous segment that happened at the worst time possible. On the same episode Hassan's match with Taker was set up, Daivari would have his own match with Taker. After Taker defeated Daivari, Hassan prayed on the ramp, which brought out five men in balaclavas, black shirts, and camo pants. The men attacked Taker, beating him with clubs and choking him with piano wire before Hassan put him in the Camel Clutch. It was plain as day what WWE was trying to imply with this segment, especially with Hassan describing Daivari as a "sacrifice for the greater good" and Daivari being carried off by the masked men after, but an already controversial segment was only the start of the end of Muhammad Hassan.
That episode of Smackdown was taped on July 4th, 2005. It was going to air on July 7th. On the morning of July 7th, terrorists would carry out multiple bombing attacks in London. The segment would be edited out of the Australian & European broadcasts (which included the United Kingdom) entirely, but would still air in the United States & Canada, albeit with several warnings. That segment quickly caught the attention of UPN, the network SmackDown aired on at the time, who quickly made the decision to keep Hassan off of their channel for good. A promo from Hassan on the next week's show was cut from the live broadcast (WWE would still upload it on their site) and he would not appear again until the Great American Bash on pay-per-view. The pay-per-view would be his last appearance on WWE programming, as Hassan would be sent back down to developmental and released two months later.
Today, Hassan has effectively been erased from WWE history. While he's not quite Chris Benoit-levels of persona non grata in WWE, as looking up his name on their site will still bring up results, his actual name has been scrubbed from clips and has been given the "(his opponent) competes in a Singles Match" treatment.
So yeah...let's talk about the match.
Hassan is out first, with Daivari leading him down to the ring and the masked men (described as "sympathizers") carrying him down to the ring on a platform. Michael Cole actually brings up the media coverage of Hassan and the SmackDown incident before Hassan grabs a mic, saying he'll never appear on SmackDown again if he doesn't defeat Taker. He says he will defeat Taker and go on to win the World Heavyweight Championship before saying he led the attack because he wanted Taker to know what it's like to be targeted. Hassan says he knows all about sacrifice as an Arab American, as he sacrificed Daivari and his own layer (who had appeared on SmackDown in place of Hassan after the incident, and was portrayed by a young Tommaso Ciampa), and that he stands against Taker, prejudice, bigotry, and tyranny. He ends by saying he'll be known as the "Great Muhammad Hassan" after defeating Taker. Taker then makes his entrance.
The bell rings and Hassan ducks an immediate right hand from Taker. Taker throws another right, but Hassan ducks again. Hassan continues to avoid Taker's strikes before taking advantage, beating down Taker in the corner. Taker turns the tables, however, tossing Hassan into the corner and striking away at him. Taker whips Hassan across the ring and charges at him, but Hassan catches him with a boot. Hassan charges towards Taker, only for Taker to floor him with a big boot of his own. Taker makes the cover and gets a two-count.
Taker follows up with a wrist lock, dragging Hassan over to the corner, climbing to the top rope, and hitting Old School. Taker follows up with an STO for another two count. Hassan crawls into the corner, where Taker goes back to striking away at him before choking him. The referee Brian Hebner starts to count Taker out, only for Taker to turn to him, leading to a fun spot where Hebner dives out of the ring to avoid him. Taker runs to give Hassan a big boot in the corner, but Daivari hops on the apron and drags Hassan out of the way. Taker crashes into the corner, over the top rope, and out of the ring, where several of the masked men pounce on him. Hassan picks up the pieces, tossing Taker into the ring steps before punching him and choking him with his boot.
Hassan tosses Taker back in the ring, where he continues striking and choking Taker. The choking earns him admonishment from Hebner, which distracts him and allows another masked man to choke Taker. Hassan follows up with a DDT, which gets a two-count. Hassan goes to the headlock, but Undertaker is able to power out of it. The two trade blows before a right hand from Taker floors Hassan. Taker lands another punch before exiting the ring to take out one of the masked men. Daivari distracts Hebner while another masked man sneaks up behind Taker Agent 47 style and garrotes him with the piano wire. Taker fades before the masked man throws him back in the ring. Hassan poses before locking in the Camel Clutch. Taker, however, is able to fight to his feet, lifting Hassan up on his shoulders before hitting an electric chair drop.
Taker runs wild, hitting two corner avalanches on Hassan. A masked man runs in, but Taker floors him with a big boot. Taker whips Hassan across the ring before hitting Snake Eyes. Another masked man runs in, but also eats a big boot from Taker. Taker clotheslines Hassan, another masked man runs into the ring, Taker quickly takes him out with a punch. Taker drops an elbow on Hassan and makes the cover, which only gets a two count. The remaining two masked men hop up on the apron. Taker quickly punches one down, and takes out the other one with another punch when he gets in the ring. Taker goes for the Tombstone Piledriver on Hassan, but Hassan slips out and kicks Taker in the gut. Hassan goes for a clothesline, but Taker ducks it and hits a chokeslam for the three and the win.
Immediately, the masked men all enter the ring and attack Taker. Taker rolls out of the ring and one man follows him out. The masked man tries to whip him into the ring steps, but Taker reverses it and sends the man into them. Another masked man grabs a chair, but Taker quickly takes him out with a big boot. Taker then smashes the man's throat with the chair before chokeslamming another masked man on the outside. A fourth man charges Taker, but he's easily thrown over the Spanish announce table. Taker gets back in the ring, where Daivari is checking on Hassan.
Hassan shoves Daivari into Taker, who grabs him by the throat. The final masked man runs back in with the piano wire. Taker avoids being choked and floors the man with a big boot. Daivari jumps on Taker's back, but Taker quickly dumps him over the top rope and out of the ring. The final masked man is given a Tombstone Piledriver before Taker exits the ring and grabs Daivari. Taker throws Daivari into the side of the announce table hard enough for him to go through it before going after Hassan. Hassan tries to crawl up the entrance ramp, but Taker catches up to him and chokeslams him on the stage. Taker then removes two of the stage's panels before giving Hassan a Last Ride powerbomb through the hole, marking the end of Muhammad Hassan in WWE.

The Verdict

It's basically a glorified squash match. Hassan really doesn't get much offense in, and the majority of the match is Taker getting his spots in while the masked men interfere on Hassan's behalf. There's not a lot of substance to it. The goal of the match at that point, obviously, was to get Hassan off of TV for good, but in terms of actual entertainment, the match just isn't all that enjoyable.

Match #2: The Mexicools vs The bWo

Following Taker vs Hassan, we get the next match we'll be taking a look at, a six-man tag between the Mexicools of Juventud, Psicosis, and Super Crazy against the Blue World Order of "Big Stevie Cool" Stevie Richards, "Da Blue Guy" The Blue Meanie, and "Hollywood" Nova. All three Mexicools are pretty new to WWE, each having signed one month prior to this show. The Mexicools would debut as a group, interrupting a Cruiserweight Championship match between Paul London and Chavo Guerrero by riding down to the ring on a lawnmower in coveralls to attack them. Juvi would cut a promo deriding the treatment & perception of Mexicans and Mexican Americans in America, which means, yes, there were, in fact, two different storylines surrounding xenophobia going on on SmackDown concurrently in 2005. I guess the lawnmowers & coveralls were supposed to mock stereotypes America has towards Mexicans & Hispanics.
The Mexicools would be challenged to a match at the Great American Bash by the bWo. Richards & Nova had already been under contract in WWE at the time (Nova working as Simon Dean) when ECW One Night Stand happened, which The Blue Meanie was brought in for, the previous month. What was likely just supposed to be a one-off reunion for the group ended up resulting in about a month and a half-fun for the bWo. At One Night Stand, Meanie was legitimately attacked by JBL over comments Meanie had made about him being a backstage bully. While Meanie apparently was looking at pursuing legal action against JBL (probably should have), he instead got a no-disqualification match against JBL on SmackDown, which he won thanks to an assist from Batista and one of the nastiest chair shots you'll ever see from Richards. The Great American Bash would be the last appearance for the bWo in WWE, as Meanie would depart the company while Richards & Nova would return to their old gimmicks.
On paper, this match doesn't seem like it would be that bad. The Mexicools are all pretty good in their own right, and Richards and Nova are also solid. Sure, Meanie isn't particularly good in the ring, but 5 out of 6 in a six-man tag is not a bad line-up. However, based on its short run-time and its half-star rating from Dave Meltzer, it seems it wasn't all that good. Let's take a look for ourselves.
The Mexicools ride down to the ring on their lawnmowers before Super Crazy hands Spanish commentators Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich a rake. The bWo come out on big wheels, riding down the ramp. Both teams switch sides of the ring for some reason before the bell rings, with Juvi and Nova starting the match.
Juvi quickly takes Nova down with a trip before doing a front handspring and moonwalking. Juvi strikes away at Nova and goes for a hip toss, but Nova blocks it. Juvi blocks Nova's attempt at a hip toss and goes a leg drop bulldog (the Famouser), but Nova blocks it and throws Juvi down. Super Crazy runs in for a clothesline, but Nova ducks it as Richards runs in to punch Super Crazy. Psicosis also runs in but quickly eats a double back elbow from Nova & Richards. The two put Psicosis & Super Crazy in the corner as The Blue Meanie gets in the ring. Nova & Richards double Irish whip Meanie into the corner for a splash. Richards & Meanie toss Psicosis & Super Crazy out of the ring and celebrate.
Juvi tries to get back in the ring, but Nova rushes him on the apron. Super Crazy distracts Nova, who prepares to "Nova Up", I guess, only for Juvi to catch him with a springboard spinning heel kick. The Mexicools take control, with Juvi hitting a nice jumping roundhouse kick. Juvi locks in an abdominal stretch. Nova starts to Nova Up again, but Juvi shuts it down with a jumping spin kick (aka, a jumping TNA kick.) Super Crazy tags and hits an awesome & super fast running low dropkick, but only gets a two count on the pin. Juvi tags back in for another abdominal stretch, but Nova fights out and hits a great-looking big boot. Nova crawls and gets the hot tag to Richards, while Juvi tags in Psicosis.
Richards runs wild, ducking a clothesline from Psicosis before knocking Super Crazy off the ring apron and giving Psicosis a back elbow. Richards chops away at Psicosis before hitting a back body drop. Juvi tries to surprise Richards with a springboard crossbody, but Richards ducks it and Juvi crashes to the mat. Richards follows up with a sidewalk slam on Psicosis and makes the cover, but Super Crazy runs in to break it up. Meanie runs in to toss Super Crazy out of the ring, and follows him out right after. Richards beats down Psicosis in the corner and whips him across the ring for a corner splash, but Piscosis dodges and Richards crashes into the corner. With Richards down, Juvi distracts referee Jimmy Korderas while Super Crazy hits a double jump moonsault. Psicosis follows up with a top rope diving leg drop for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Overall, not bad. There are a couple of fun moments, and there's not really too much of a down period during the match. This is going towards the top of the list.

Match #3: Melina vs Torrie Wilson

We're going to skip over the next match, an unsurprisingly solid match between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero (which was the precursor to the Custody of Dominik ladder match at SummerSlam that year), and we'll be jumping to the eighth & penultimate match on the card, a Bra and Panties match between Melina and Torrie Wilson, with Candice Michelle as the special guest referee. This match came about because...you know...and a one-star rating from Meltzer. Torrie's match at the previous year's Great American Bash is in the Bottom 25 of my list. Will this one fare any better?
Candice is out first, followed by Melina. Melina's tag team MNM lost the Tag Team Championships to Road Warrior Animal & Heidenreich earlier in the night, a loss that has upset Melina so much that she can't bring herself to do the splits during her entrance. The match starts with a surprisingly aggressive lock-up, which sees Melina force Torrie into the corner. Melina mocks Torrie with light slaps, prompting Torrie to shove her away. Melina fires back with a kick to the gut before throwing Torrie down by her hair. Torrie is able to reach her legs up and take Melina down to the mat with a headscissor that, while not the smoothest execution, was not something I was expecting. Torrie rolls Melina up and tries to remove her pants, but Melina is able to kick her away. Melina tries to follow up with a clothesline, but Torrie ducks it, hits a kick to the gut, and locks in an abdominal stretch. From there, Torrie takes Melina's shirt off before rolling her up again and going for the pants, but Melina again is able to kick Torrie away and send her flying out of the ring, which Torrie takes a big bump for straight to the ground. Is this match...OK? Like, I'm actually enjoying it...for the wrestling...a Bra and Panties match.
Melina throws Torrie back in the ring and quickly rips Torrie's shirt off. Melina starts forearming Torrie before choking her against the bottom rope. Melina tries to remove Torrie's pants, but Torrie kicks her away. Melina then hits a genuinely great locking double axe handle...in a Bra and Panties match. Melina starts choking Torrie until Candice makes her break. Melina slams Torrie down by her hair, but Torrie is able to reach up and kick her hard enough that you can actually hear it...in a Bra and Panties match. Melina retreats onto the apron, but Torrie quickly pulls her back in by her hair, making her flip over the top rope to the mat. Torrie runs wild, hitting two nice clotheslines and a low dropkick before hitting a suplex. Even Tazz mentions on commentary how physical this is for a Bra and Panties match. Torrie goes for the pants again, but Melina is able to throw her off. Melina then throws Torrie into the top rope and rips her pants off. After the match, Melina hits Candice from behind, only to get clotheslined by Torrie. Candice retaliates by ripping Melina's pants off. Candice then takes off her referee shirt and shorts before she & Torrie celebrate and walk off.

The Verdict

I cannot believe I'm saying this...but this is a genuinely solid. I am 100% completely serious. I'm normally pretty down on eye candy matches, but this match is way better than the average Bra and Panties match. All the props in the world to Melina & Torrie Wilson, because they went so far above and beyond what this kind of match normally entails. Sure, it's not like a must-see match or anything like that, but it's still going towards the top of the list.

Match #4: Batista vs JBL

And that brings us to the main event, and the final match we'll be taking a look at, between Batista and John Bradshaw Layfield for the World Heavyweight Championship. This was the one match that got requested for me the cover, which was the inspiration for this whole post. Following WWE Champion John Cena being drafted to Raw, SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long announced a Six-Man Elimination match to crown a new world champion. JBL would win the match, only for Long to reveal that, with their last draft pick, SmackDown was able to draft Batista, bringing over the World Heavyweight Championship in the process. No longer needing a new world title, JBL was instead named the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight title, setting up this match at The Great American Bash. This match received only a single star from Dave Meltzer. Let's get into this.
JBL is out first, his limo being escorted out to the stage by a police motorcade. He tosses little American flags out to the crowd before handing one to each commentator. Batista enters and the bell rings, with Batista soaking in the crowd's cheers. The two lock up, with Batista forcing JBL into the corner before referee Nick Patrick breaks them up. 15 seconds of staring & circling before we get another lock-up, which sees JBL put on a waistlock, but Batista fights out with a back elbow. We get another staredown before JBL slaps on a headlock. Batista is able to fight out and floors JBL with a shoulder block, leading to him flexing before we get another staredown. Over 20 seconds of that before they go for another lock-up. JBL, however, catches Batista with a knee to the gut before hitting a club to the back.
JBL kicks Batista into the corner, where he punches him before whipping him to the opposite corner. Batista fires back with a clothesline, causing JBL to retreat from the ring. Batista follows him out and chases him around ringside until JBL gets back in the ring. Batista follows him in, only for JBL to stomp him out. JBL goes for an Irish whip, but Batista reverses it and hits a sidewalk slam, which gets a two count. Batista punches JBL into the corner, where he chokes him with his boot. Batista whips JBL to the opposite corner, but JBL catches him with a boot before flooring him with a running shoulder block. JBL follows up with a big punch, but Batista reverses another Irish whip before hitting a back body drop. Batista follows that up by clotheslining JBL out of the ring.
Batista follows him out and throws JBL into the barricade before tossing him back in. Batista gets up on the apron, and while he blocks JBL's attempt to suplex him into the ring, he can't block JBL yanking his head down into the ropes, sending him down to ringside. JBL dives off the apron towards Batista, but Batista catches him and rams him into the apron. Batista punches and knees JBL before tossing him back in the ring, following him in as JBL crawls to the corner. Batista strikes away at JBL in the corner, but a thumb to the eye allows JBL to throw Batista through the ropes and into the ring post. JBL follows up with a big boot, sending Batista through the ropes to ringside.
JBL follows him out and tackles him over the announce table. JBL then throws Batista's head into the ring bell before rolling in & out of the ring to break Nick Patrick's count. JBL walks back over to Batista when, suddenly, the camera cuts out. I'm watching this on Peacock, I've never seen a WWE official rebroadcast that keeps a glitch like that. It cuts back pretty quickly to JBL tossing Batista over the announce table. JBL climbs up onto the table, diving off to hit a punch. JBL rolls Batista back in the ring and makes the cover, but Batista kicks out at two.
JBL drags Batista into the ropes, where he slingshots him into the ropes before choking him with the rope. JBL follows up with a big boot and three elbow drops, which get a two count. Batista tries to come back with strikes, but JBL reverses an Irish whip before locking in a sleeper hold. This sleeper hold goes for, quite literally, TWO STRAIGHT MINUTES before Patrick starts dropping Batista's arm. Batista barely keeps his arm up on the third drop and fights to his feet before elbowing his way out of the hold. Batista follows up with a back suplex, leaving both men down. Both men beat the count, but JBL regains control by tossing Batista out of the ring.
JBL follows him out and throws Batista's head into the ring steps before rolling in & out of the ring to break the count. JBL throws Batista's head into the ring steps again before punching him. Another roll in & out of the ring to break the count before JBL throws Batista into the ring post. Batista fires back with a boot before clotheslining JBL over the barricade and into the crowd, going over himself with him. Batista goes to the ground and pound before tossing JBL back over the barricade. Batista follows him over and tosses JBL back in the ring, following him back in as well. JBL quickly pounces on Batista and goes for an Irish whip, but Batista reverses it and hits a back elbow. Batista whips JBL into the corner and charges him, but JBL dodges and Batista crashes in the corner. Batista stumbles into Patrick as JBL charges him, but Batista dodges and JBL runs over Patrick.
Patrick rolls out of the ring as Batista hits a Spinebuster on JBL. JBL's Chief of Staff Orlando Jordan runs down and hops up on the apron, but Batista quickly dispatches him. Batista calls for the Batista Bomb and sets JBL up, only for Jordan to return with a chair and hit him across the back. JBL takes the opportunity to hit a big boot and makes the cover. He gets the visual three as Jordan throws Patrick back in the ring. Patrick crawls over and starts to count, but Batista kicks out. JBL charges up and hits the Clothesline from Hell and gets another visual three, but Patrick is still recovering from the blow. I'm sorry, but isn't this backwards? Why is JBL, the obvious heel, getting multiple visual victories over Batista, the babyface? Makes no sense.
JBL sets up & charges in for another Clothesline from Hell, but Batista catches him with a Spinebuster. Jordan runs into the ring and tries to clothesline Batista out, but Batista backdrops him out instead. Batista shoulder blocks JBL in the corner before whipping him across the ring and hitting a corner clothesline. Batista follows up with a powerslam as Jordan tries to enter the ring with a chair again, but Batista grabs him on the apron and throws him into the ring. Batista grabs the chair and hits Jordan in the head before giving JBL a chair shot to the head of his own. Patrick wakes up just in time to see Batista hit JBL and calls for the bell, giving JBL the win by disqualification, but not the title. Nearly 20 minutes of a slow brawl...all for the DQ finish. Fuck me.
Batista goes nuts, beating Jordan and JBL with the chair. Batista's music plays as he grabs the title and walks up the ramp. As he reaches the stage, Tony Chimel announces JBL as the winner, prompting Batista to come back down to the ring. Batista immediately gives Jordan a Batista Bomb, before doing the same to JBL. Batista's music plays again to close out the show.

The Verdict

Incredibly boring. 20 minutes of plodding, uninteresting offense that ends in a DQ. It's really bad, and not worth watching whatsoever. It's pretty botch-free, so it's not going super far down the list, but it's definitely going low.

  1. Since this post was about patriotism, I’d like to suggest both of the Lex Luger vs Yokozuna matches from SummerSlam 93 and WrestleMania 10, both of which had terrible endings.

Two more suggestions come from the 1990 Survivor Series, where Vince had to exploit the Gulf War with Turncoat Sarge and Tito Santana teaming up with a mix of the Bushwhackers and the Bolsheviks! Also, The Grand Finale match of Survival at the end was just an excuse for Hogan and Warrior to mow down four midcarders without breaking a sweat.

    1. I've actually already got Luger & Yokozuna at Mania X and the Mercenaries vs the Alliance (The Slaughter-Santana teams) matches on the list.
The other two I didn't have yet, but I'll definitely add them. Since I've got the Mania X match and the All-Americans vs Foreign Fanatics match from Survivor Series 93 (captained by Luger & Yoko) on the list, I think I might mash them together with the SummerSlam 93 match for a Lex Express-centered post.
      Thanks for the suggestions!

  2. Here's a doozy. The Predator (Sylvester Terkay) vs. Keith Hanson (Luke Gallows) at IGF Genome 14. A match so genuinely horrid that Antonio Inoki comes to ringside and loudly demands that they stop wrestling right now.

it's on the PuroArchive if you want to find it

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
