Worst in the World: Kendo Nagasaki & Blondie Barratt vs. The Golden Boys-ITV Wrestling (10/15/1988)

(NOTE: Hey everyone. Sorry this is a few days late. I got sick the week prior to this upload and have been resting since. I'll be back to my normal schedule after this post. Now, onto the newest entry in the Worst in the World.)

Professional wrestling is inherently silly & fantastical. It always has been and it always will be. Whether it be the WWF having a man perform voodoo magic on their show, WCW busting a "yeti" from a frozen block of ice, or the many, many wrestlers who seem to be able to teleport around the arena, the lengths of kayfabe are pretty limitless. That being said, there are times that limitless nature ventures beyond the suspension of disbelief and just doesn't connect. That was the case for this match; Kendo Nagasaki & Blondie Barratt (or Barrett depending on where you look) vs the team of Steve Regal & Robbie Brookside, collectively known as The Golden Boys, from British promotion All Star Wrestling's October 15, 1988 episode of ITV Wrestling. A match & finish so infamous that it got wrestling taken off of British television...allegedly.
British wrestler Peter Thornley debuted all the way back in 1964 with the gimmick of Kendo Nagasaki, a masked samurai, and wrestling for the Joint Promotions (basically the National Wrestling Alliance in the United Kingdom.) Thornley mainly wrestled in his home country, but would work outside of the UK occasionally, most notably in Stampede Wrestling in Canada. The gimmick itself was incredibly successful & persistent, spawning off another Kendo Nagasaki in America & Japan (portrayed by Kazuo Sakurada) and various gimmicks of a similar/exact nature. Thornley initially retired in 1978 due to injuries, wrestling a handful of matches afterward, but returned to wrestling full-time in 1986 with ASW.
Blondie Barratt is a little hard to find information on. From what I've gathered, he was a British wrestler who debuted in 1986 with ASW. He'd go on to have a 36-year career in wrestling, having wrestled as recently as 2022 for the company he founded, Rebel Pro Wrestling.
Steve Regal & Robbie Brookside are almost certainly the names most American fans would know, as Regal would go on to have a 22-year career in the United States between WCW and the WWF/E before transitioning to both an on & off screen role, while Brookside would have a 32-year career, mainly in the UK and Europe, before joining WWE as a trainer in NXT. In 1988, both men were relatively new to wrestling, with Brookside debuting in 1981 and first appearing for the ASW (when it was still Wrestling Enterprises) in 1983, while Regal would debut in 1983 before joining ASW in 1987.
As I mentioned, this match is infamous, both for its finish and its reputation as the match that got wrestling taken off of British television. However, the latter is not entirely accurate. While it is true that Britain's ITV channel stopped covering wrestling at the end of 1988 (legitimately, this episode is the second to last episode of ITV Wrestling from ASW), wrestling itself wasn't gone from British TV. By 1988, the WWF had already found itself on British television, sharing air time with ASW and Joint Promotions. The WWF's effective domination of English-speaking regions for wrestling basically meant that replacing British wrestling on British television was kind of inevitable, and this match just happened to happen when it did. Still, this is a silly ass match, so let's take a look.
Nagasaki & Barratt are managed by George Jillette. The match is also two out of three falls. Regal & Barratt start with a lock-up, with Regal quickly shoving Barratt to the ropes. Another lock-up sees Barratt lock in a headlock. Regal powers out, sending Barratt to the ropes before going for a shoulder block. Barratt stays up, however, and starts running the ropes. Regal drops down and tries to follow up with a leapfrog, but the timing is badly off and Regal collides with Barratt mid-jump.
Barratt kneels on Regal's chest before pulling him back up to his feet. Barratt throws Regal into the ropes before taking him back down with a snapmare. Barratt follows up with a knee drop before locking in a headlock.
Regal quickly escapes, turning the headlock into a wristlock before whipping Barratt to the ropes. Regal drops down, but opts for a nice hip toss instead of a leapfrog this time. Regal follows up with a dropkick and an arm drag, prompting Barratt to tag out to Nagasaki. Nagasaki quickly locks in a headlock while simultaneously clubbing Regal in the chest. Nagasaki takes Regal to the mat, continuing to club at Regal. Regal fights to his feet, but Nagasaki keeps control by bieling Regal across the ring. Nagasaki continues striking away at Regal. Regal fights back with uppercuts, but Nagasaki cuts him off with a butterfly suplex. Nagasaki lands a forearm and a kick before Regal tags out to Brookside. Barratt also tags in...and then Nagasaki just stays in the match for some reason.
Nagasaki forces Brookside into his corner, shoulder-rushing him while Barratt holds him in place. Nagasaki palm strikes Brookside in the throat before tagging in Barratt for a double clothesline. Barratt follows up with an elbow drop before tossing Brookside into the corner. Barratt quickly takes Brookside back down with a snapmare followed by a knee drop. Barratt continues striking away at Brookside before locking in a headlock. Brookside reverses it into a wristlock, and the two trade reversals before Brookside whips Barratt into the corner. Brookside quickly hits a monkey flip on Barratt before following up with two great arm drags. Brookside whips Barratt to the ropes, dropping down and leapfrogging over him before hitting another quick arm drag. Brookside's momentum is cut off, however, when Nagasaki gets in the ring and chops him, which earns him a "public warning" from the referee Frank Casey.
Barratt takes control, striking Brookside before forcing him into the corner and tagging in Nagasaki. Nagasaki beats down Brookside in the corner before knocking him down with a palm strike. Barratt takes the opportunity to climb to the top rope and hit a knee drop on Brookside, which earns him a public warning from the referee. Nagasaki scoops up Brookside and slams him over the top rope and out of the ring. Nagasaki distracts the referee, allowing Barratt to hit a knee drop from the apron. Nagasaki drags Brookside back into the ring, where he hits another palm thrust followed by a bodyslam. Nagasaki follows up with a backdrop for the three and the first fall.
Following the first fall, Nagasaki is locked in a headlock on Brookside. He quickly switches to a double-shoulder claw, forcing Brookside down to the mat. Nagasaki presses his forearm against Brookside's throat, forcing the referee to break up the choke. Nagasaki quickly biels Brookside across the ring, allowing Brookside to tag in Regal. Barratt tags in as well, but Regal pounces on him. Regal whips him to his team's corner before hitting a snapmare. Regal follows up with a leg drop before whipping Barratt to the ropes. Barratt hits the ropes, only for one of the top turnbuckles to break, causing the ropes to give out under Barratt.
Regal follows up with an uppercut before whipping Barratt into the corner. Barratt pleads as the referee checks on him, allowing Nagasaki and palm thrust Regal down to the mat. Barratt capitalizes, headbutting Regal before hitting a snapmare and an elbow drop. Regal fights back with punches and chops before whipping Barratt into his corner. Barratt bounces out right into a quick belly-to-belly suplex from Regal. Regal makes the cover, but Nagasaki runs in to break up the pin. This allows Barratt to take control with a snapmare and a knee drop. Blondie Barratt learned how to do the basics of wrestling and decided that was enough.
From the apron, Nagasaki holds a knee up for Barratt to ram Regal's head into. Regal blocks it, however, and slams Barratt's head into the knee. Barratt dips out of the ring, but quickly gets back in. It's here we see just how bad the top rope is.
The commentator (I believe Kent Walton) describes it as being in "dire straights." It's actually so bad that part of the crew starts fixing it while the match is happening.
Nagasaki tags in and quickly knocks Regal down with a palm thrust. Nagasaki clubs away at Regal before kicking & chopping him. Barratt tags back in as Regal tags out to Brookside. Brookside strikes first with a bodyslam before whipping Barratt into the corner the crew is working on. Fucked up ropes be damned, they've got spots to do.
Brookside follows up with a monkey flip before whipping Barratt back to that same corner. Brookside charges in, but Barratt catches him with a boot. Barratt climbs to the top rope, forcing the crew to stop working on the turnbuckle. It's hilarious that they adamantly refuse to stop doing spots in that corner and let them finish. Brookside pops up and tosses Barratt down to the mat before hitting a back drop. Brookside climbs to the top rope and hits a missile dropkick. Rather than pin him, Brookside lets the referee count out Barratt for a knockout, evening the match at 1-1.
According to the ring announcer, the referee has ruled that Barratt can no longer participate in the match because of the knockout, leaving Nagasaki to face Regal & Brookside alone. The final fall starts with Brookside delivering forearm strikes to Nagasaki in the corner. Brookside whips Nagasaki to the opposite corner, where he continues striking away at Nagasaki. Nagasaki responds with a big kick out of the corner before flooring Brookside with a palm thrust. Nagasaki locks in a chin lock, only for Regal to run in and attack him from behind.
Regal hits an uppercut before the Golden Boys hit a not-great Hart Attack followed by a double dropkick. Regal's in without a tag as he strikes away at Nagasaki. Regal hits a snapmare followed by a leg drop before tagging in Brookside. Brookside climbs to the top rope and hits another missile dropkick. No pin again, as Brookside instead goes and rips off Nagasaki's mask. And this is where a standard tag match becomes a match worthy of an entry in the Worst in the World.
Nagasaki looks into Brookside's eyes. He waves his hands in front of him before demanding his mask back. Brookside...obliges. He's been hypnotized. Nagasaki points at Regal, prompting Brookside to tag out and forcefully drag Regal into the ring. Nagasaki chops Regal before whipping him into the Golden Boys corner. Brookside punches Regal in the back of the head before Nagasaki scoops him up and hits a rolling fireman's carry senton. Nagasaki un-hypnotizes Brookside as the referee counts out Regal, giving Nagasaki the final fall by knockout.

The Verdict

The actual match is fine, for the most part. Kendo Nagasaki was almost 47 years old and had a history of injuries, so he was pretty limited in what he could do, and while I don't think he's terrible, Blondie Barratt was very unremarkable in this match, keeping it super basic on offense. Steve Regal & Robbie Brookside are unsurprisingly great, and they definitely elevate the match. However, like I said, the ending is really where this match hits its lowest point. It's so ridiculous that it pretty much got it requested on its own.

  1. I don't know if this match was ever requested or not but here's Karrion Kross vs Jeff Hardy Raw July 19 2021 where it not only obliterated Karrion Kross 1st run in WWE and showed how Vince McMahon views NXT wrestlers as goobers meant to put over his guys.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
