Worst in the World: Rick Steiner vs Sting-The Great American Bash 1999

As I've mentioned before in this series, 1999 doesn't get nearly as much attention when talking about the downfall of WCW as 2000 does, it's still a brutal year for the company. In the aftermath of the Fingerpoke of Doom, WCW had found themselves trailing the WWF in the Monday Night Wars, stuck in a hole that was only getting deeper as the weeks went by. A big part of that was the big decline in quality for the company, something that is perfectly exemplified by their pay-per-view outputs in the summer of '99. I've covered Bash at the Beach from this year, and this week, I'll be taking a look at a match from another of those shows, in this case, The Great American Bash.
Pretty much the whole show is brutal, but for now, I'll be looking at the most infamous match from this card; Sting vs Rick Steiner in a Falls Count Anywhere match. As far as I can tell they're feuding...just cause. Steiner is also the Television Champion, but the title isn't on the line. The match earned a negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer and currently sits at an abysmal 0.50/10 rating on Cagematch.net, putting it at #21 on the Flop 50 worst-rated matches on the site.
The match starts with Sting striking away at Steiner. Sting follows up by whipping Steiner to the ropes, clotheslining him down when he bounces back. Sting quickly tosses Steiner out of the ring before following him out. Steiner fights back, punching away at Sting before trying to slam his head into the steps. I say "trying" because Sting's head does not come within a foot of the steps.
Steiner follows up by kicking Sting before slamming him into the guard rail and tossing him back in the ring. Steiner climbs back in the ring and clubs Sting in the back repeatedly. Steiner claws at Sting's face before beating him down in the corner. Sting fights back with kicks before hitting two atomic drops. Sting follows up with a dropkick before tossing Steiner back out of the ring. Sting follows him out, where he tosses Steiner into the guard rail. He then lifts & crotches Steiner across the rail, with Steiner falling into the crowd right after. Sting punches away at Steiner, but Steiner creates separation by hitting Sting with a water bottle.
Steiner hops back over the rail and punches Sting before grabbing a chair. Steiner grabs a chair and smashes Sting across the back with it, but Sting responds by grabbing a soda from a fan and tossing it in Steiner's face. What a dick, that was probably $7 minimum at the concession stand. Sting punches Steiner around ringside before slamming him into the guard rail. Sting drags Steiner to the opposite side of ringside, where he throws Steiner into the rail again. With Steiner leaning against the rail, Sting sets up for a Stinger Splash, a move that never connects when he goes for it against the guard rail. It doesn't connect, as Steiner moves out of the way and Sting crashes into the rail.
Steiner capitalizes, picking up & dropping Sting onto the rail. Steiner clubs Sting in the back before pulling away the padding on the ground, exposing the concrete. Steiner hits a piledriver and makes the cover, but Sting kicks out. That legitimately might be the least important a piledriver on the concrete has ever felt, with the crowd barely reacting and Sting kicking out right at two. Steiner stomps Sting in the gut before throwing Sting back in the ring, where he stomps him again.
Steiner hits a big German suplex and makes the cover, which gets a two-count. Steiner claws at Sting's face before punching him in the back of the head. Steiner locks in a headlock from a mounted position. Steiner hits two seated senton drops across Sting's back before hitting an elbow drop for a two-count. Steiner hits another seated senton drop and goes for another, but Sting rolls over as he does, sticking his knees up and causing Steiner to crotch himself. Sting capitalizes, climbing to the second rope twice for slingshot splashes. Sting follows up by climbing to the top rope for a frog splash. Sting makes the cover, but Steiner kicks out.
Steiner cuts Sting off with a low blow before taking him down to the mat with a snapmare. Steiner works the back, pressing his knee into it with a surfboard stretch. Sting fights to his feet, breaking free before knocking him down with strikes. Sting whips Steiner into the corner before hitting two Stinger Splashes. Sting locks in the Scorpion Deathlock, but Steiner breaks the hold...by grabbing the ropes...in a match with no disqualifications...fucking hell.
Sting quickly tosses Steiner out of the ring, prompting Steiner to walk up the ramp. Sting follows him out and throws him into the guard rail. Steiner continues to retreat, with Sting throwing him into the rail a second time before suplexing him onto the entrance ramp. Sting rams Steiner into a table (Tony Schiavone described it as the "Internet location" where Mark Madden & Chris Jericho were sitting) before dragging Steiner backstage, where Rick's brother Scott and Tank Abbott are waiting. There, Steiner turns the tables, clobbering Sting before Tank chokes Sting from behind with a towel. And this is where this match turns into a Flop 50 candidate.
Scott calls for the hounds. Two Dobermans run down the hall and attack Sting. One bites Sting on the kneepad, while the other bites Sting on the hand. Steiner then walks down the hall and brings a rottweiler down to also attack Sting. Doug Dillinger and WCW security run down as the cameras cut to the crowd. The crowd is having absolutely none of this, booing and chanting "BULLSHIT!"
The Steiners come down to the ring, with Rick dragging referee Mickie Jay with them. Scott takes the mic as Mickie Jay calls for the bell. Scott says that the scene was too graphic, and that Rick pinned Sting after the cameras cut away. Deadass, that's how the match ends. Scott tosses Mickie Jay out of the ring before Rick insults Sting. Steiner says that WCW sucks before saying the Steiner Brothers are the best tag team who ever lived. Scott throws the mic down, forcing Rick to awkwardly pick it back up to say Baltimore is the "shitiest town in America." I really don't think you get to call anything shit after...that.

The Verdict

The match itself is not horrible, albeit unremarkable. Mostly brawling with a couple of actual spots. Unsurprisingly, the ending is what really drags this match down. It's such a ridiculous finish, especially the fact that they DON'T SHOW THE PINFALL. The match itself might not be the worst, and definitely not in the bottom 50 matches I've ever seen, but it would definitely go a lot higher if it had an actual ending.

  1. Here's a ppv where Bret Hart became king of the ring and the star of the ppv but unfortunately the rest of the show it was riddled with a boring rematch between Hulk Hogan and Yokozuna, a rare mediocre Shawn Michaels match, Mr Perfect being unable to get something good out of Hugh Morris, a qualifying match ending in no contest and an eight man tag that didn't need to be on the card: King Of The Ring 1993

    Mr Perfect vs Mr Hughes
Bam Bam Bigelow vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan
    Lex Luger vs Tatanka
    Yokozuna vs Hulk Hogan
The Smoking Gunns/Steiner Brothers vs Money Inc/Headshrinkers
    Shawn Michaels vs Crush

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Rest in peace to both Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Two incredible performers who will be missed dearly. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
