Worst in the World: That Match From the Cody Rhodes Story

I'll be honest, the only reason I gave this entry that title is because I'm 99.9% sure Google would not be cool with me titling something "The Fuck on Me Match." On paper, this match doesn't seem like one that would really stand out. A six-man tag match pitting Daniel Bryan, the original Sin Cara, and Ezekiel Jackson against Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase Jr., and Wade Barrett on a random episode of SmackDown (The June 17, 2011 episode, t doesn't even sound too bad in general, let alone an all-time bad match. Sure, there's a pretty obvious botched finish, but that's about it. The match itself probably would've stayed a random multi-man midcard match, had it not been for one of the participants, Cody Rhodes, recounting his experience of "the worst match of his career."
Cody first told this story during a YouTube livestream in 2017 alongside his then-Bullet Club stablemates Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and Adam Cole, and then again at the inaugural Starrcast in 2018. In both retellings, the part that stands out the most is what happened after he & DiBiase got to the back. It's here where, according to Cody, DiBiase told Vince McMahon:
Where's that referee? He was trying to FUCK ON ME!
And since then, this random match has become forever known as the "Fuck on Me" match. So much so that Cagematch.net, which was around when this match happened, didn't have a single rating prior to the retelling, and now has enough to give it a rating on the site (it currently holds a 2.75/10 rating.) DiBiase has since denied that part of the story (more so the "on" part and not the "fuck" part), but between him & Cody, I'm more willing to trust the one that wasn't implicated in a welfare funds misappropriation scheme. That's just me though.
But with all that in mind, how is the actual match? Like I said, the main reason this match has stuck out at all is because of this story from Cody Rhodes. Is it really the worst match he ever had like he said? (at least when he first told the story.) Let's find out.
Jackson & DiBiase start the match, with DiBiase ducking a lock-up attempt before applying a headlock. Jackson powers out, sending DiBiase to the ropes before flooring him with a shoulder block. DiBiase scrambles to the corner, where Jackson splashes him before beiling him across the ring. Jackson tags in Sin Cara, who kicks away at DiBiase before going for an Irish whip. DiBiase counters, whipping Sin Cara into the ropes before going for a clothesline. Sin Cara ducks it, however, before hitting a headscissor takedown, sending DiBiase out of the ring. Sin Cara celebrates by hand-springing into the ropes before doing a backflip as the show goes to commercial.
The show returns to DiBiase beating down Sin Cara before throwing him into his team's corner, where he tags in Cody. Cody beats down Sin Cara before applying a wrist lock. Sin Cara quickly counters, however,  leaping up before taking Cody down with a snapmare takeover. Sin Cara follows up with a body scissor roll-up, which gets a two count, but Cody regains control with a forearm shot. Cody goes back to the wristlock, but Sin Cara fights back with kicks before walking up the ropes and diving off for an arm drag. Sin Cara looks to follow up, but Cody catches him with a surprise Disaster Kick (a springboard roundhouse) for a two count.
Cody tags in Barrett, who beats down Sin Cara before making the cover for a two count. Barrett follows up with a suplex before tagging DiBiase in for a kick, which gets another two count. DiBiase tries to follow up with a back suplex, but Sin Cara lands on his feet. Sin Cara hits the ropes, only for DiBiase to run after him, hitting the ropes with him before hitting a clothesline for another two count. DiBiase tags Barrett back in, booting Sin Cara before locking in a surfboard stretch. Sin Cara manages to fight to his feet, laying into Barrett with elbows, kicks, and a spin kick to the gut (aka the TNA Kick.) Sin Cara ducks Barrett's reply clothesline attempt, but Barrett catches him with a Mule kick to the gut to cut him off. Barrett sets up for a Pumphandle Slam, but Sin Cara slips out and lands on his feet before he, as Cody puts it, "for whatever reason, just kicks Stu (Barrett) right in the balls."
There's a very noticeable cut at this point, as Barrett goes from hunched over to upright before kicking Sin Cara.
It's a pre-taped SmackDown that involves the original Sin Cara, so them having to edit is not surprising. Barrett goes for the Pumphandle again, getting Sin Cara up in a power slam position, but Sin Cara counters with a tornado DDT. According to Cody, Sin Cara's supposed to make the hot tag to Jackson, but actually ends up tagging in Bryan. It makes sense, as Jackson was set to face Barrett for the Intercontinental Championship at the next pay-per-view Capitol Punishment in two days, while Bryan was facing nobody at the pay-per-view.
Because it was pretty obvious who he tagged, Bryan gets in as Barrett tags out to DiBiase. Bryan ducks a clothesline from DiBiase before kicking him into the corner. Bryan goes for an Irish whip, but DiBiase reverses it, sending Bryan to the opposite corner. Bryan walks up the turnbuckles, backflipping over DiBiase before ducking another clothesline and hitting a clothesline of his own. DiBiase crawls into the corner, where Bryan hits a running dropkick. Bryan makes the cover, during which the referee decides to do some fucking on. The ref goes down to count, DiBiase clearly kicks out at two, but the ref counts the three and calls for the bell, giving the win to Bryan, Sin Cara, and Jackson. The babyfaces stand there confused for a bit before celebrating. And the rest is history...

The Verdict

Outside of the titular fucking on, the match isn't really all that terrible. It's a pretty unremarkable midcard 6-man tag match, and one that there were undoubtedly dozens of every year on SmackDown around this time just like it, albeit without someone getting fucked on by the referee. I said it at the start, if it weren't for Cody's retelling and those three little words, this match would've faded into obscurity. It's just kind of...there.

  1. The first Survivor Series matchup with no survivors (1996) that was also the last WWF match of Yokozuna. His team of Flash Funk, Savio Vega and a long past his prime Jimmy Snuka fought to a no-contest with Vader, Faarooq and the two Diesel and Razor Ramon imposters.

  2. In case you're looking for suggestions, here's a good one: Hogan vs Flair's First Blood Match from Uncensored 1999, entire essays can be made about how both the building and the match itself were absolute messes, but I'm just going to summarize in that it was a typical overbooked WCW messy main event from a lot of PPVs, but this one stands out because both Hogan and Flair bleed during different parts of the match and yet the bout ended with a fast count and an clumsy double-turn, also, in spite of the stakes involving Flair's career, the story invovled David Falir and whether Flair was a bad parent or not.

  3. Since it appears my least favourite woman’s wrestler of all time, Ronda Lousey is going to release a book next month, figure I’d throw in a few suggestions for her worst matches. Summerslam in particular has not been very kind to her.

vs. Alexa Bliss in 2018 (destroyed Alexa’s main event credibility)
vs. Liv Morgan in 2022 (at least Liv got the last laugh in July by pinning her for the tag team titles)
vs. Shayna Baszler in 2023 (Shayna seems to have a tendency to end women’s careers with chokeholds)

Also would like to throw in her match against Shotzi at 2022 Survivor Series for good measure.

  5. The Bray Wyatt documentary was so good and emotional, with it looking like Bo Dallas/Uncle Howdy is going to be back in WWE I'm definitely intrigued to see what he's got cooking.

  6. While World War 3 in 1996 had great cruiserweight action it still had some stinkers from Jericho fighting a referee, a match between managers, Giant/Jarrett stinking it up and a couple of clunky tag team matches.

    Chris Jericho vs Nick Patrick
    The Giant vs Jeff Jarrett
Harlem Heat vs The Amazing French Canadians
Sister Sherri vs Col. Robert Parker
The Outsiders vs The Faces of Fear vs The Nasty Boyz

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
