Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work.

Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw

The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing end of a 6-Woman tag match the previous week alongside Emma, after which Charlotte shoved Nia, who promptly laid her out, setting up this singles match.

The bell rings, with Byron Saxton on commentary immediately saying that Nia Jax is "detrimental to your health", which is about to age well, but not for the reasons WWE probably wants it to. The two lock up, with Nia quickly tossing Charlotte down to the mat. Charlotte gets up and grabs a waistlock, but Nia quickly tosses her away. Charlotte fires back with strikes before hitting the ropes, only for Nia to floor her with a body block. Charlotte responds with more strikes and a neckbreaker, but Nia stays on her feet. Charlotte follows up with a chop and goes for a second, but Nia ducks it and scoops Charlotte onto her shoulder. It's here where we get the first of many ugly spots you'll see in this post, as Nia goes for a shoulder breaker, only to drop Charlotte's head across her knee, then drop her head-first onto the mat.

Thankfully, Charlotte wasn't injured from this spot.

Unfortunately, this isn't the last rough moment of this match.

Nia follows up with two elbow drops and a cover, with Charlotte kicking out at two. Nia applies a Cobra Clutch, Charlotte eventually fights to her feet and hits a jawbreaker, but Nia keeps control by tossing her across the ring. Nia chokes Charlotte with her boot before picking her up in a fireman's carry. Charlotte quickly slips out, ducking a follow-up clothesline from Nia before chopping away at her. Nia cuts her off with a knee to the gut before tossing her towards a corner, only for Charlotte to flip over the ropes and onto the apron. Nia charges at her, only for Charlotte to catch her with boots & a shoulder tackle through the ropes.

Charlotte dives through the ropes and tries to roll up Nia, but Nia keeps a hold of the ropes and pulls her to her feet. Nia scoops Charlotte up in a powerslam, but Charlotte slips out and chop blocks Nia's knee. Charlotte follows up with Natural Selection (a somersault cutter) and makes the cover, but Nia kicks out. I don't know if I've ever had a chance to mention this, but Natural Selection has to be up there for the worst finishers ever, at least in my opinion. A cutter from half the normal height would be a weak finisher in 1987, let alone 2017.

Charlotte goes for the Figure Eight, but Nia powers out and pushes her into the corner. Nia charges in, but Charlotte dodges, sending Nia through the ropes and into the post shoulder-first. Nia falls out onto the apron, where Charlotte climbs out with her and shoves her back into the post. Nia falls down to the ground, prompting Charlotte to climb to top rope. Charlotte hits a moonsault, but Nia barely cushions her fall, causing her to faceplant hard on the ground.

Charlotte rolls back in the ring, opting for a countout win, but Nia gets back in at a count of 8. Charlotte quickly follows up with a big boot and goes for the Figure Eight, but Nia grabs her and pulls her down into the bottom turnbuckle. Charlotte pulls herself to her feet, only for Nia to splash her before hitting a Samoan Drop for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Unremarkable match, with the only notable moments being the dodgy moments throughout. Not worth watching whatsoever.

Match #2: vs Alexa Bliss-Backlash 2018

We're jumping forward a year to 2018 for our next match, as Nia defended the Raw Women's Championship against Alexa Bliss at Backlash 2018. Nia had been Bliss' ally the previous year, during which Bliss was the Women's Champion. That partnership ended when, following Nia's jobber squash on an episode of Raw, Bliss & Mickie James were caught making fun of Nia on a hot mic backstage, in particular mocking Nia's weight. Nia would beat Bliss at WrestleMania 34, with their rematch being set up on the following month's Backlash. Even on a notably bad pay-per-view card, this match stood out in the worst way, earning a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer, and currently sits at a 2.76/10 on Cagematch.net, both of which are the second lowest on the show behind Carmella vs Charlotte Flair.

Bliss immediately dropkicks Nia's knee to start the match before hopping on her back. Nia quickly tosses her off and goes for a clothesline, but Alexa ducks and starts kicking at Nia's knee. Bliss hops back on Nia's back before raking her eyes. Bliss hops off and goes to hit the ropes, only for Nia to grab her by the hair. Bliss goes for a slap, but Nia blocks it and headbutts her. Alexa stumbles into the corner, where Nia splashes her before bieling her to the opposite corner. Nia hits another splash and another biel, causing Alexa to roll out of the ring.

Alexa climbs back on the apron, prompting Nia to grab her from the ring. Alexa quickly dropkicks her leg and kicks her in the head before climbing back in the ring. Alexa punches Nia in the face before making the cover, with Nia kicking out at one. Alexa chokes Nia against the ropes before double-stomping her across the back, standing on & stomping her right after. Alexa slams Nia's head into the mat before slapping her. Alexa follows up with a knee to the face before slapping her again. Alexa goes for a DDT but Nia counters, scooping her up, and goes for a Samoan Drop. Alexa slips out, but Nia floors her with a body block right after.

Nia attempts to follow up with a rolling senton, but Alexa rolls out of the way to avoid it. Alexa resumes striking away at Nia before slamming her head into the mat. Alexa continues striking before going for a crossbody, but Nia catches her. Nia lifts Alexa onto her shoulders and attempts to climb to the second rope for a Samoan Drop, but Alexa slips out and locks in a sleeper hold. Alexa transitions to a headlock, then a front facelock, but Nia breaks the hold by ramming Alexa into the corner. Nia places Alexa on the top rope, only for Alexa to lock in a sleeper again. Nia breaks the hold and yanks Alexa down to the mat.

Alexa kicks at Nia from the mat, only for Nia to pick her up and clothesline her. Nia rams Alexa into the corner before tossing her across the ring twice. Nia splashes Alexa in the corner before bieling her across the ring. Nia climbs to the second rope for a Bonzai drop, but Alexa pops up and tips her over the top rope, causing Nia to fall to the outside. Alexa leaves the ring herself, grabbing Nia and hitting a DDT onto the ring steps. This leads to a STRAIGHT MINUTE of Alexa trying, and eventually, getting Nia back in the ring. This match is SO BORING.

Alexa makes the cover when she gets Nia back in the ring, but Nia kicks out at two. Alexa strikes away at Nia and goes for another crossbody, but Nia catches her again. Nia again lifts Alexa onto her shoulders and climbs to the second rope for the Samoan Drop, but Alexa slips out again. Alexa attempts to powerbomb Nia, but Nia blocks it. Alexa manages to kick Nia's leg out, knocking her down to the mat. Alexa makes the cover, but Nia kicks out at two. Alexa follows up with a dropkick to Nia's back, causing her to crash into the bottom turnbuckle. Alexa climbs to the top rope and goes for Twisted Bliss (a twisting splash), but Nia catches her on her shoulder. Nia lifts Alexa onto her shoulder and hits the Samoan Drop for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Man, this was a chore to watch. Nia's pretty limited in what she can do, in general, and while I like Alexa, she's nowhere near the person who can bring out the best in Nia. As a result, this match has pretty much NOTHING worth watching. Skip this.

Match #3: vs Kairi Sane-June 1, 2020 Raw

We're fast-forwarding two years to the June 1, 2020 episode of Monday Night Raw for our next match, as Nia takes on Kairi Sane. By now, Nia's reputation as a reckless wrestler was fully in effect, most notably after she broke Becky Lynch's nose with an errant punch during an interbrand brawl. This match, a lead-up to Nia facing Kairi's tag partner Asuka at Backlash for the Raw Women's Championship (more on that shortly), is another commonly cited example of that reputation. The two had faced off a month prior on Raw, during which there was another notably scary spot where Jax undershot a Buckle Bomb attempt, causing Kairi to hit the corner awkwardly. This rematch would not go without incident either.

Kairi immediately hits a dropkick to start the match. Kairi strikes away at Nia, only for Nia to shove her away, patting her on the head to mock her afterwards. Kairi slaps Nia and continues attacking her, only for Nia to shove her again before flooring her with a shoulder block. Nia tosses Kairi across the ring before going for the Samoan Drop. Kairi counters, locking in a sleeper hold and taking Nia down to the mat. Kairi follows up with three axe kicks and a spinning back fist before climbing to the top rope. Nia meets her there, however, headbutting her before going for a bodyslam. Kairi counters, however, and hits a tornado DDT, which gets a one count.

Nia crawls into the corner, putting her in position for Kairi to hit the Sliding D (a running forearm.) Kairi climbs to the top rope for the diving elbow drop, but Nia rolls out of the ring to avoid it. Kairi looks to catch Nia with a baseball slide, but Nia sidesteps her before slamming her onto the apron. Nia drags Kairi out of the ring, leading to the scary moment. Nia throws Kairi towards the steps, only for Kairi to stumble and slam headfirst into the steps hard.

It's not apparent on the broadcast (this was during the Pandemic, so the show was taped & edited), but Kairi suffered a nasty cut from this spot. Nia quickly tosses Kairi back in the ring, where she hits a leg drop for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Up until THAT spot, the actual match is pretty fine & energetic, mostly because Kairi's the one on offense for the majority. The spot is bad, and another bad look for Nia, but it's not the worst.

Match #4: vs Asuka-Backlash 2020

As I mentioned, that match with Kairi Sane was part of a feud with Asuka over the Raw Women's Championship, which the two would face off for at Backlash two weeks later. Asuka's a fantastic wrestler, so surely she'd be able to have a good match with Nia, right? Well, a one-and-a-quarter star rating from Dave Meltzer and a 2.43 rating on Cagematch.net says no, but let's take a look ourselves.

The match starts with Asuka kicking & striking away at Nia, who promptly shoves her away. Asuka kicks Nia again and goes for a spinning back fist, but Nia blocks it and scoops her up. Asuka slips out and goes for a sleeper hold, but Nia quickly breaks it. Asuka tries to follow up with a tilt-a-whirl armbar, but Nia blocks it before punching and headbutting Asuka. Asuka fights back with a kick before ramming Nia's head into the top turnbuckle three times. Nia fires back with an elbow and goes for a clothesline, but Asuka counters and locks in an Octopus Stretch. Nia manages to power out of the hold before flooring Asuka with a clothesline.

Asuka attempts to respond with Fujiwara armbar attempts, but Nia blocks each one and floors her with a body block. Nia follows up by tossing Asuka into the corner, where she hits a splash before bieling her to the opposite corner. Nia scoops Asuka up and hits a body slam, which gets a two count. Nia ties Asuka up in the ropes, pressing her boot into her back. Asuka fires back with punches and kicks, but Nia shuts her down with a spinebuster, which gets another two count. Nia applies a Cobra Clutch, but Asuka fights to her feet and applies a guillotine. Nia powers out, however, lifting Asuka up and hitting a Jackhammer for the cover, but Nia kicks out at two.

Nia taunts Asuka, only for Asuka to tee off with spinning back fists, kicks, and a spin kick to the gut (a TNA kick) before hitting the ropes. Nia tries to catch Asuka with a Samoan Drop when she bounces back, but Asuka slips out and goes for a roll-up. Nia doesn't budge and goes for a sit-down splash, but Asuka dodges it before hitting a sliding kick. Asuka makes the cover, but Nia kicks out. Asuka continues kicking at Nia before Nia whips her to the corner. Asuka leaps up onto the ropes, quickly hitting a missile dropkick followed by a running hip attack. Asuka makes the cover, but Nia kicks out at two.

Asuka kicks away at Nia, but Nia catches one of the kicks, lifting Asuka up and hitting a sitout powerbomb and making the cover, but Asuka kicks out at two. Asuka crawls into the corner and Nia charges at her, but Asuka dodges, sending Nia through the ropes and shoulder-first into the ring post. Asuka climbs to the top rope, but Nia meets her there, headbutting her. Asuka responds with an armbar over the ropes, yanking Nia out of the ring in the process. Asuka quickly applies a flying armbar, but Nia is able to break the hold by ramming Asuka into the barricade. Nia scoops Asuka up, but Asuka slips out and hits a roundhouse kick. All the while, the referee counts both women out for a double countout. Asuka dives into the ring a second too late, opting to dive off the apron with a hip attack before leaving with her title.

The Verdict

Better than the previous Backlash match, but still not good. A couple of spots and no real incidents, but not exciting, and it has a screwy finish.

Match #5: vs Lana, February 8th, 2021 Raw

...

You know exactly which one...

Toward the end of 2020, Nia Jax adamantly refused to stop putting Lana through the announce table. Without hyperbole, Nia put Lana through the announce table NINE TIMES over two months. It's pretty funny, not gonna lie. Naturally, this would lead to a tables match between the two on the February 8th, 2021 episode of Raw.

Lana starts the match with forearm strikes, but Nia easily shoves her away. Nia follows up with a back elbow and a stomp before hitting a powerbomb. Nia follows up with another powerbomb, taunting Lana before applying the Stretch Muffler submission, only breaking it by swinging Lana into the corner. Nia chokes Lana against the ropes before scooping her onto her shoulder. Nia tries to dump Lana over the top rope and through a table at ringside, but Lana grabs the ropes to stop her. Nia instead drops her across the top rope. Nia tries to follow up with an elbow drop, but Lana rolls out of the way.

Lana fights back with kicks, dodging Nia charging at her in the corner as she does, before hitting a jumping roundhouse kick. Nia cuts off her comeback with a body block before going for another powerbomb. Lana counters, however, pulling Nia over the top rope with headscissors, taking both women onto the apron. With a table set up beside them, Lana rolls back in the ring, roundhouse kicking Nia and trying to knock her off the apron. Nia starts to stumble, prompting Lana to try and break her grip of the rope. Nia fends her off, however, and headbutts her down to the mat. Nia drags Lana out onto the apron, choking her with her boot before going for a leg drop. And then, a moment in history...

Lana rolls out of the way, causing Nia to hit the apron. Nia screams in pain, dropping down to floor as she grabs her tailbone. Nia flips the table before screaming "MY HOLE!" As she does, Lana leaves the ring and shoves Nia, causing her to fall through a table propped against the barricade for the win.

The Verdict

Much like the "Fuck on Me" match I covered two weeks ago, this match is far less infamous for the actual match and more for its meme, in this case, Nia Jax injuring her hole. As for the match, it's really not bad. It's more of an angle above all else, but it's far from the worst thing I've ever seen.

Match #6: vs Charlotte Flair-August 30, 2021 Raw

The last match we'll be taking a look at in this post comes 6 months later on the August 30, 2021 episode of Monday Night Raw, as Nia takes on Charlotte Flair. Charlotte's the Raw Women's Champion, having beaten Nikki A.S.H. for the title in a triple threat with Rhea Ripley at SummerSlam eight days prior, but the title is not on the line. The last match between these two that we looked at was a messy affair. Would this one be any different...no...it would just be messy in a different way.

The bell rings and Nia charges at Charlotte, only for Charlotte to dip out of the ring. Charlotte starts to get back in the ring, but quickly drops back down when Nia charges at her. Charlotte eventually gets back in the ring and Nia goes for a lock-up, only for Charlotte to side step her. My brother in Christ, the match just fucking started and you're stalling. The two eventually lock up, with Nia overpowering Charlotte until Charlotte grabs her hair. Nia goes for a clothesline, but Charlotte ducks it and shoves her in the back of the head. Charlotte attempts a shoulder block, but Nia stays on her feet.

Charlotte teases going for another, but instead kicks Nia in the knee before going for a suplex. Nia blocks it, however, before headbutting Charlotte, knocking her down to one knee. Nia goes for a Samoan Drop, but Charlotte slips out. Nia keeps control, however, with a body block. Charlotte crawls into the corner, where Nia hits a splash, knocking Charlotte down. Nia goes for a running hip attack, but Charlotte dodges it and starts stomping Nia in the corner. Charlotte locks in a headlock, keeping a hold as Nia tries to power out. A second attempt to power out succeeds, as Nia sends Charlotte to the ropes before flooring her with a shoulder block when she bounces back.

Nia keeps control, repeatedly shoving Charlotte down before choking her against the ropes. Charlotte responds with two back elbows and goes for an Irish whip, but Nia reverses it and sends her towards the corner. Charlotte flips over the ropes, landing on the apron before locking in a Dragon sleeper over the ropes when Nia charges at her. Charlotte drags Nia down across the ropes before hopping on Nia's back, locking in a sleeper hold. Nia quickly tosses Charlotte off her back and hits a clunky spinebuster. Nia makes the cover, but Charlotte quite literally kicks out at 0.1 before rolling out of the ring. Charlotte takes a breather outside the ring before climbing back in. Nia charges at her, only for Charlotte to drop down, causing Nia to fall through the ropes. Charlotte follows up with a plancha to the outside before the commercial break.

/The show returns on Charlotte in control, holding Nia in a headlock in the ring. Nia fights out, hitting a back suplex. Nia punches Charlotte twice, sending Charlotte into the corner before charging at her. Charlotte dodges, however, and Nia crashes shoulder-first through the ropes and into the ring post. Charlotte goes for a moonsault off the top rope, but Nia blocks it with her knees up. Nia follows up with a Samoan Drop and goes for a leg drop, but Charlotte rolls out of the way. Charlotte boots Nia in the face, only for things to get really awkward. Get ready, this part's GIF-heavy./

Charlotte applies a front facelock, but Nia gets right to her feet. Charlotte slaps Nia, so Nia double-pie-faces her before forcing her into the ropes. The two struggle against the ropes before Charlotte breaks free. Charlotte chops Nia, but Nia no sells it. Charlotte slaps & shoves Nia, with Nia shoving Charlotte's hands away before very clearly telling her "Don't." Charlotte goes for a slap, so Nia just tees off with punches.

The two have a legit standoff before Nia goes for the Samoan Drop. Charlotte goes beyond sandbagging it, actively trying not to go up.

Instead, Charlotte hits the ropes as Nia just stands there. Charlotte ends up just jogging & stopping before blatantly hopping up on Nia's shoulders.

The match has completely fallen apart by this point.

Charlotte, in an unbelievably messy sequence, slowly climbs off Nia's shoulder before, even more slowly, hitting a side Russian leg sweep. There's a good seven seconds where they just stand there before hitting the move.

Charlotte makes the cover, but Nia kicks out. I would love it if this match stopped happening. Charlotte follows up with a chop block to Nia's knee before knee-dropping & stomping it. Charlotte hits a leg DDT before pushing Nia in the back of the head. Charlotte goes for the Figure Eight, but Nia blocks it and boots Charlotte into the middle turnbuckle. Nia lifts Charlotte up and hits a powerbomb for the three, and the win to mercifully end the match.

The Verdict

Awful. Charlotte & Nia already didn't have chemistry in the ring, so the actual match isn't very good to start with. Then it just devolves into a mess, with both women just flat-out shooting on each other, and the match turns into an absolute disaster by the end of it. It's a horrible match and deserves all the infamy it's gotten.
