Not every wrestler can be like CM Punk or Kurt Angle and have a gimmick that immediately clicks and gets over with the crowd as their first gimmick. Many wrestlers have a bad or embarrassing gimmick they went through before becoming the superstars we know today. Before he was the badass redneck Stone Cold, he the was The Ringmaster, a guy who's whole gimmick was "good at wrestling". Before he was Kane, fire controlling demon, he was a dentist, Isacc Yankem, DDS. Before he was the dark & brooding loner Raven, he was Florida surfer Scotty Flamingo. And in today's case, we take a look at one of Kevin Nash's first gimmicks. Long before he was one-third of the group that defined "cool heel" and even before he was Big Daddy Cool Diesel in the WWF, he was...Oz. You know, as in The Wizard of Oz. Can you believe this didn't get over? Oz takes on Tim Parker in his WCW pay-per-view debut at the first ever SuperBrawl.
So before Oz eve makes his entrance, we get a near two minute long scene where Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are led up the ramp by a guy and meet Oz at the top of the ramp. This takes over two minutes. WHY? WHAT DRUGS ARE THESE WRITERS ON? The crowd viciously boos this (and rightfully so), and it takes another minute or so for Oz to make his way down to the ring. It's then we learn that that guy from the opening awfulness is his manager, just called "Wizard". He keeps yelling "WELCOME TO OZ!" in a annoying raspy voice. F*ck this guy.
And just look at Oz:
WCW actually saw this giant, nearly 7 foot, decent looking guy and decided "Hey, let's put this guy in bright neon green, dye his hair grey, dress him up like a wizard, and have him wear a fake beard and wizard mask!" Oh yeah, that beard and face are fake if you couldn't tell already (how could you not, though), he actually takes it off when he gets to the ring.
What even is this company?
So literally, the entire match is Oz hits two clotheslines and a spinning powerbomb for the win. 26 seconds. 26 seconds. To put that in perspective, guess how long the opening nonsense and Oz's entrance took? 4 minutes and seven seconds. This was the debut of the Oz character. This is how they debuted somebody. I...I just don't know
The Verdict
Everything about this can piss right off. The dumb opening skit, the terrible gimmick, the annoying manager, the awful attire, and the fact that I sat through four minutes of entrances and Wizard of Oz bullsh*t for a match that didn't even last half a minute. Pitiful. I thought Meltzer was being a little harsh when I saw he gave a 26 second match minus three stars. He wasn't. This is sh*t
