My Thoughts on SmackDown (1/3/16): Carmellsworth

  • We kick off the show with the Miz & Maryse. Miz demands that Renee Young come out and apologize for slapping him two weeks ago and he won't leave until he gets it. Miz says that Dean Ambrose got his Intercontinental Championship match tonight because Renee is buddy buddy with Daniel Bryan and says she sacrificed her journalistic integrity for "dirty deeds with Dean Ambrose." This brings out Ambrose, and Miz leaves the ring while Maryse stands between them. Maryse slaps Ambrose before leaving the ring with Miz. Ambrose takes the mic and says Maryse hits harder than Miz.
  • Baron Corbin vs Dolph Ziggler-Ziggler takes the fight to Corbin to start, but Corbin blocks all of Ziggler's big moves early on and takes control after dodging a dropkick. Corbin beats down & manhandles Ziggler, eventually knocking him to the outside. Corbin follows him out, ramming him into the ring apron before rolling him back in. Ziggler starts to mount a comeback by sending Corbin sliding out of the ring and catching him with a dropkick when he gets back in. Corbin rolls back to the outside before the commercial break. We come back to see Corbin just stepping on Ziggler's head. He turns it into a half nelson/rear chin lock combo before Ziggler fights out, only for him to get floored with a straight punch from Corbin for a near fall. Ziggler fights back and hits a Stinger Splash and a neckbreaker for a near fall and goes for the Famouser, but Corbin blocks it and clobbers Ziggler with a big lariat for a near fall of his own. Corbin rams Ziggler into the corner, but Ziggler sends Corbin into the ring post shoulder first and hits a Famouser for another near fall. Corbin blocks the Zig Zag once, but Ziggler connects on the second attempt for a near fall. Ziggler beats on Corbin in the corner until the referee pulls him off, only for Corbin to hit him with the End of Days for the win. Pretty good match. After the match, Corbin tries to attack Ziggler with a chair, but Kalisto runs down to make the save. However, Ziggler superkicks Kalisto when he gets up and yells that he doesn't need him or anyone.
  • Backstage, James Ellsworth walks up to Carmella and stumbles over his words, trying to thank her for being nice to him and wishes her good luck. He gives her his t-shirt, which she acts a little uncomfortable towards him at first before accepting the t-shirt and asks Ellsworth to come with her to ringside for her match.
  • In the locker room, Rhyno, Mojo Rawley, and Apollo Crews are talking when Dolph Ziggler comes in and starts throwing things around. Crews tries to calm him down, so Ziggler attacks him.
  • Becky Lynch vs La Luchadora-After La Luchadora shoves Lynch in the face, Lynch takes over and beats down on La Luchadora. Eventually, La Luchadora gets out of the ring and crawls under, only for another, smaller La Luchadora to pop out the other side. La Luchadora #2 hits an STO before going for twisting moonsault. However, Lynch dodges and locks in the Dis-Arm-Her for the win. After the match, Lynch unmasks the second La Luchadora to reveal Alexa Bliss, but the first one comes back and she & Bliss attack Lynch before Bliss DDTs her. We still don't know who La Luchadora is.
  • It's time for the contract signing for the WWE Championship match at the Royal Rumble between AJ Styles and John Cena. The two come out before Styles gives out about Cena getting a title match for doing nothing. Bryan says that SmackDown is on a roll right now after beating RAW in the ratings last week, so booking the biggest match possible will keep that roll going. Styles still says that Cena is lucky for getting this title match, but he agrees that this is best for SmackDown and himself. He says the tables have turned since they last fought; Styles is the top dog and Cena is the one needing to prove himself. He says he's the reason SmackDown beat RAW in the ratings, not Cena, and SmackDown can do it without him. Cena starts to talk about how he respects Styles, but Styles cuts him off and basically says Cena's full of sh*t. He says Cena was telling the truth about the Rock all those years ago when he blasted him for leaving WWE, but now he is just like the Rock. Styles says Cena is no longer great in the WWE and he will never be as good as the Rock in Hollywood or as good in the ring as he is. Styles signs the contract before Cena says he made a mistake by pissing off John Cena. Cena says Styles is right when he says he needs to win before saying he lost all respect for Styles. He says people are talking about their match at the Royal Rumble because people who hate him believe that Styles is going to replace Cena, but they're scared because Cena always shuts them up. Cena says he still has his passion for wrestling and that everyone who thinks he sucks knows they could never be him. He tells Styles to bring his A game, but he's still gonna win because he's John Cena. Suddenly, Baron Corbin comes out. He says he's the first SmackDown superstar to enter the Royal Rumble, and he's leaving WrestleMania as the WWE Champion no matter who he faces. Cena challenges him to a fight, but Styles catches him with a dropkick before leaving the ring. Corbin tells Cena his time is up before staring down Styles.
  • Backstage, Maryse finds Renee Young and slaps her on behalf of the Miz. She then tells her to never touch her husband again.
  • Carmella with James Ellsworth vs Aliyah-Hey, it's Aliyah from NXT! Aliyah starts off working over Carmella, but Carmella quickly takes control and beats down Aliyah. Aliyah is able to make comeback and gets a near fall off a Northern Lights suplex before hitting a corner crossbody. Aliyah goes to the second rope, but Ellsworth pushes her off, allowing Carmella to hit a superkick and lock in the Code of Silence for the win.
  • Breezango vs American Alpha-Breeze starts off by giving Gable a ticket, which Gable rips up before he & Gable quickly hit Grand Amplitude on Breeze for the win. After the match, The Wyatt Family appears on the screen. Bray Wyatt tells them nothing lasts forever and to cherish their win. He says American Alpha hasn't really won anything and they've only made the Wyatt Family stronger. Wyatt ends by saying that next week, they reclaim what belongs to them.
  • Nikki Bella & Natalya are out to address what Natalya said about her two weeks ago. Nikki says she doesn't hate Natalya, but she fills bad for her. She says Natalya is living off her family's legacy, from her entrance music to her finisher. She says Natalya is the nothing of the Hart family, so Natalya says she's selfish and she did things to get Bret Hart to tweet nice things about her. Natalya says she's better than Bret Hart and that Nikki uses her sex appeal to get what she wants. She says that when Nikki's beauty fades, John Cena will leave her and she'll die alone, so Nikki punches her and walks off.
  • Dean Ambrose gets interviewed by a stuttering Dasha Fuentes. He says he's going to take away the most important thing in the Miz's life; the Intercontinental Championship.
  • The Miz (c) with Maryse vs Dean Ambrose-Intercontinental Championship-Ambrose goes right after the Miz, who ducks out of the ring after being beaten down. Ambrose follows him out and chases him back into the ring, where he continues the beat down and almost hits Dirty Deeds quick, but Miz escapes and leaves the ring. Miz avoids Ambrose at first before Ambrose allows Miz to have a free shot at him, only for Ambrose to toss him out of the ring and into the timekeeper's area. He brings Miz back in the ring for a near fall, only for Miz to leave the ring again. Ambrose follows him out and tosses him over the announce table. Ambrose tosses him back in before Maryse yells at Ambrose, allowing Miz to hit a wrecking ball dropkick and throw Ambrose into the stairs before the commercial break. We come back to see Ambrose backbody drop Miz out of the ring. Ambrose goes to the top rope and hits an elbow drop to the outside before taking the fight back in the ring. Ambrose runs wild on the Miz until Miz avoids a bulldog. Miz goes for a figure four, but Ambrose rolls him up for a near fall before going for Dirty Deeds. Miz blocks it and forces Ambrose into the corner, where he works over his leg. Ambrose goes for the Lunatic Lariat, but Miz counters it and goes for a Skull Crushing Finale, but Ambrose blocks it and gets a near fall off a neckbreaker. Ambrose goes to the top rope, but Miz meets him up there and goes for a superplex. Ambrose blocks it and knocks Miz down, but Maryse hops up on the apron and distracts Ambrose long enough for Miz to recover. Ambrose goes for a diving elbow drop, but Miz catches him and hits the Skull Crushing Finale, but Ambrose kicks out at two. Miz does the Daniel Bryan-kicks, but Ambrose dodges the last one. Ambrose goes for a roll-up, but Miz rolls through and hits a big boot, but Ambrose bounces back with a Lunatic Lariat. Ambrose goes for Dirty Deeds, but Miz avoids it, only to get clotheslined out of the ring. Ambrose takes out Miz with a suicide dive, so Maryse slaps him. The referee goes to disqualifies Miz, but Ambrose pleads with him not too, so he just ejects Maryse from ringside. Miz capitalizes on the confusion and hits Ambrose with the Intercontinental Championship, but Ambrose kicks out at two. Miz goes for the Skull Crushing Finale, but Ambrose counters it and hits Dirty Deeds for the win and the title. New Intercontinental Champion: Dean Ambrose. Fantastic match, a great way to kick off 2017 for SmackDown.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e

Worst in the World: Carmella vs Asuka: How to Destroy an Aura

Throughout the entire history of the WWE, we've never seen, and probably will never see again, a woman booked as strong as Asuka was to start her run. Coming into WWE in 2015 with over a decade of experience wrestling in her native Japan as Kana, Asuka was immediately treated like a huge deal. Hell, even from the first time we saw her on a WWE broadcast, she was seated in the crowd of NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn next to two Hall of Famers in Ric Flair & Sgt. Slaughter. Officially debuting in October 2015, Asuka would go her entire NXT career, nearly two full years, without being pinned or submitted. She was booked so strong, in fact, that instead of dropping the NXT Women's Championship in what would be her last match in NXT at the time to Ember Moon (even after sustaining an injury), an act that is almost always the case for champions leaving NXT for the main roster, Asuka retained and later vacated the title, keeping her streak intact. For a company that is more than willing t
