My Thoughts on SmackDown (6/27/17): Two Tickets to Paradise

  • We kick off the show with Daniel Bryan. He runs down the card for the night before being interrupted by Carmella & James Ellsworth. She calls SmackDown the land of injustice and says she was unjustly stripped of the Money in the Bank briefcase. She reiterates that the Money in the Bank match is no disqualifications and the winner is the first woman to gain possession of the case. She also adds that other people have interfered in the Money in the Bank match and the winners (Seth Rollins & Sheamus, as examples) didn't lose their briefcases. Bryan says she makes good points but stands by his decision. He asks the crowd if he should cancel the match and give Carmella the briefcase, which the crowd obviously rejects. Ellsworth says the crowd makes him sick and says Bryan is a puppet controlled by the crowd. He says he used to look up to Bryan, but that he is now a gutless coward who couldn't cut it in the ring so he faked his injury. Bryan says he should fire Ellsworth, but since tonight is about the real superstars of SmackDown. He says Ellsworth isn't going to be banned from ringside like he said on Talking Smack...he's banned from the entire arena. Security comes down to the ring and carries Ellsworth out of the ring. Ellsworth tries to escape, but the grab him and carry him to the back. Bryan mockingly wishes Carmella good luck before leaving the ring.
  • The Hype Bros vs The Usos-Ryder & Jimmy Uso start with Ryder hitting a shoulder block, two arm drags and a flapjack for a near fall. Mojo tags in and takes out Jimmy's knee with a chop block. Jey tags in so Mojo can no sell some chops and hit a shoulder tackle before clotheslining him out of the ring. Ryder tags in so Mojo can back drop him onto both Usos. Ryder throws Jey back in the ring, but a distraction by Jimmy allows Jey to knock Ryder off the apron with an enziguri before the commercial break. We come back to see Jimmy pull Jey out of the way of the Broski Boot. Jey quickly superkicks Ryder before Jimmy tags in and hits the top rope splash for the three and the win. Fine match, nothing special. After the match, the New Day comes out. Woods congratulates the Usos on actually winning a match instead of getting counted out and Big E says they want the gold, and at Battleground, "WE COMING FOR YOU-" before Woods stops him. Where was he during MizTV on Monday? The Usos say they'll give them an L again at Battleground and it's not about the New Day anymore, it's about that Day One Ish. They compliment themselves on their fire promo, but the Woods reminds them that all they do is spit hot fire before Kofi calls them booty. Byron Saxton says the Usos got served.
  • It's Fashion Vice "Under Pressure." The Fashion Police interrogate the Ascension, who claim they are innocent. Fandango offers them tickets to an Eddie Money to tell them who attacked Breeze, which Viktor tries to take, but Konnor says they only listen to grindcore thrash metal. Breeze pulls out all his water guns before offering them some ice tea & cheese and asking why they attacked him. They say they didn't attack him and were only at Money in the Bank because they wanted a match on the card. Breeze believes them before a loud noise is heard. They see their office has been destroyed, which clears the Ascension, who sneakily take the Eddie Money tickets.
  • Naomi (c) vs Lana-SmackDown Women's Championship-Lana attacks Naomi during the introductions. After the bell rings, Lana quickly hits the sit-out spinebuster, but Naomi kicks out at two. Naomi comes back with a roundhouse kick and a split-legged moonsault for the three and the win. Well, that was a waste of time.
  • Dasha Fuentes interviews Becky Lynch. She says she was inches away from winning the Money in the Bank briefcase, but James Ellsworth stole it away from her. She says all she needs is a fair chance and she'll be the first woman to legitimately win the Money in the Bank match.
  • Aiden English is in the ring, singing a song before Randy Orton comes down to the ring. After a commercial break, we see that Orton RKO'd English from a replay. Orton says he's not leaving the ring until he gets what he wants; another shot at the WWE Championship. He says if he doesn't get what he wants, he'll go find Jinder Mahal backstage and beat the hell out of him until he does. Shane McMahon comes out and says he can't have Orton threatening the safety of Jinder, so Orton says he can fire him if he wants, but he'll just come to every show Jinder's at and beat the hell out of him for disrespecting his family. Shane says that Jinder & the Singh Brothers crossed the line, but does point out that Orton's done stuff like that...like he did to his father. Shane does give him a title shot at Battleground, but there will be stipulation chosen by Jinder. Speak of the devil, Jinder comes out and says what just happened is exactly what's wrong with SmackDown. Jinder says Orton is not worthy of a rematch, but for their match at Battleground, they will face off in the Punjabi Prison.
  • Backstage, AJ Styles confronts Daniel Bryan. He says he should've been able to challenge Kevin Owens for the United States Championship last week if it was an "open challenge." Owens comes in and says the open challenges are only for people who he hasn't beaten already and calls Styles a loser. Styles calls Owens "Ron Burgandy's definition of San Diego," which Owens doesn't understand. Bryan then says that next week, there will be a battle royal for the United States Championship.
  • Outcomes Mike & Maria Kanellis, only to be quickly interrupted by Sami Zayn's entrance.
  • Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin-The two go back and forth before Zayn takes down Corbin with headscissors. Zayn beats on Corbin in the corner before Corbin rolls out of the ring. Zayn sets up for a somersault plancha, but Corbin moves to the other side of the ring. Zayn tries for a regular plancha, but Corbin catches him and drops him across the barricade before the commercial break. We come back to Corbin getting a near fall off a clothesline. Corbin locks in a bear hug before flooring Zayn with a forearm to the back. Corbin hits another one, only for Zayn to come back with a big clothesline. The two go back and forth before Zayn sends Corbin into the ring post through the turnbuckles and goes to the top rope for a crossbody, but Corbin kicks out. Zayn goes for a suplex, but Corbin blocks it and clocks Zayn with a straight right hand. Corbin clotheslines Zayn in the corner twice, but Zayn dodges the third one and rolls up Corbin for a near fall. Corbin puts Zayn on the top rope and goes for a superplex, but Zayn knocks him down. Zayn dives at Corbin, but Corbin dodges him before hitting the End of Days for the three and the win. Pretty decent match.
  • Dasha Fuentes interviews Shinsuke Nakamura. He says Baron Corbin is dangerous but says that Corbin is afraid of him.
  • Next week, the New Day & the Usos are going to have a rap battle.
  • Charlotte Flair vs Natalya vs Tamina vs Becky Lynch vs Carmella-Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match-Instant brawl to start the match, leaving Carmella alone in the ring. Carmella sets up a ladder and starts to climb, only for the other four women to quickly stop her and kick her out of the ring. Tamina tries to climb, but the other three women stop her and boot her out of the ring. Charlotte & Natalya go for a double suplex on Becky, but Becky lands on her feet and gives both them a Bex-ploder suplex for their troubles. Becky sets up a ladder, but Tamina stops her and shoves her into the ladder before hitting a Samoan Drop. Tamina goes to the top rope and hits a Superfly Splash on Becky before the commercial break. We come back to Charlotte alone in the ring. Charlotte sets up a ladder, but Natalya stops her and suplexes her. Carmella pulls Natalya down before slapping Tamina. Carmella tries for a superkick, but Tamina catches her foot and throws her over the announce table. Natalya kicks Tamina down before Charlotte chops her and throws her out of the ring. Natalya quickly receives a Bex-ploder suplex from Becky as Charlotte & Tamina fight over a ladder. The two hold the ladder upright, allowing Becky to scale the ladder. Tamina & Charlotte quickly put the ladder down before Tamina boots Becky off of it onto Charlotte. Tamina grabs the ladder, only for Charlotte to boot it into her face. Natalya floors Charlotte with a discus clothesline before setting up another ladder. Natalya gets to the top, but Charlotte quickly scales the ladder. The two fight at the top until Carmella pushes the ladder down. Carmella quickly gets a pumphandle suplex from Becky, who then gets speared by Tamina before the commercial break. We come back to Natalya alone in the ring setting up a ladder. Natalya gets to the top, but Charlotte is able to grab her and stop her. Becky & Tamina run in and climb up the other side before the two fight, causing the ladder to fall over. Carmella comes back and sets the ladder back up. Carmella climbs the ladder and gets her hand on the briefcase, but the other four women literally carry the ladder away from the briefcase to stop her. Charlotte & Tamina get sent out of the ring before Carmella takes out Becky & Natalya. Tamina crawls back into the ring, only for Charlotte to pin her under the ladder. Charlotte then stupidly unpins her under the ladder and moves it, forcing Tamina to crawl under the ladder again and repin herself. Charlotte climbs to the top, but Carmella grabs her. Tamina manages to push the ladder up from under it, knocking both women down. Tamina follows up by superkicking Charlotte before setting up the ladder and climbing it. However, Becky & Natalya stop her and double powerbomb her before Natalya powerbombs Becky herself. Natalya puts Carmella in the Sharpshooter before being booted in the back of the head by Charlotte. Charlotte hits Natural Selection on Carmella before Natalya spears her to the outside. Charlotte & Natalya brawl into the crowd before James Ellsworth comes out from the crowd. Ellsworth gets Carmella back in the ring and climbs the ladder again, but Becky kicks Carmella out and pushes the ladder over, causing Ellsworth to get crotched on the top rope. Becky sets the ladder back up and climbs again, but Carmella is able to yank her down, causing  Becky to hurt her knee on the way down. Becky kicks Carmella out of the ring and climbs again, but Carmella hits her in the back of the leg with a chair before climbing the ladder and grabbing the briefcase.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
