Worst in the World: The Shockmaster vs Awesome Kong (?)-Starrcade 1993

Do I need to go any further? Heading into Fall Brawl 1993, the team of Sting, Davey Boy Smith, and Dustin Rhodes needed a partner to take on the team of Big Van Vader, Sid Vicious, and Harlem Heat. But they didn't just need anyone, they needed someone who was going to shock the world. Enter the Shockmaster, aka Fred Ottman (Tugboat/Typhoon in the WWF) in a glittery Stormtrooper mask. This already looks bad, but it gets worse. Much worse.
After Sting announced the Shockmaster as their partner at Clash of the Champions XXIV, the Shockmaster burst through the wall of the "A Flair for the Gold" set. At least, that's what was supposed to happen. Instead, Shockmaster tripped over a piece of wood, broke through the wall, fell right on his fookin ass as Smith said, and lost his helmet in the process. And just like that, the gimmick was dead. Less than one second into its existence and the gimmick was done for. They tried to salvage the segment, as Shockmaster took the mic (with Ole Anderson providing the voice for him) and called out Sid as Sid tried his damndest to keep character.
Obviously, WCW couldn't try to present the Shockmaster as anything serious after this disaster of a debut, so they tweaked the gimmick. Now, instead of...whatever he was supposed to be, he was a klutz who wore a hardhat. The gimmick wouldn't last long, and the Shockmaster was gone in December of 1993, three months after his debut. The Shockmaster's final match saw him take on Awesome Kong (not the TNA one) and one half of the Colossal Kongs...OR IS HE?! You'll see what I mean.
As Shockmaster makes his way to the ring, both of the Kongs attack him, giving him an assisted corner splash before King Kong splashes. And this is where, for whatever reason, they decided to switch Awesome Kong and King Kong, so now it's King Kong facing Shockmaster as Awesome Kong stands at ringside. You can tell because King Kong has "KING" written on the side of his gear.
Tony Schiavone and Jesse Ventura are just as confused as I am, even theorizing that Awesome Kong put on the wrong gear after showering. What. King Kong beats down on Shockmaster in the corner before going for another splash. Shockmaster blocks it with a big boot before clotheslining Kong to the ground. Shockmaster follows up with a crossbody. Awesome Kong tries to interfere (in the match he's supposed to be wrestling), but Shockmaster stops him before bodyslamming King Kong for the three and the win. After the match, Awesome Kong tries to splash Shockmaster, but Shockmaster moves out of the way, causing Awesome Kong to splash his fellow Kong. Shockmaster then just...leaves.

The Verdict

This match is confusing. I really don't understand what was going on with the Awesome Kong-King Kong switch. Aside from that, this isn't too bad. Sure, it's just basic wrestling moves, but it's mercifully short and nothing was actually botched. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's not really worth skipping if you are watching Starrcade 1993.

    Great review. I suggest you watching the main event from the event "CMLL Leyendas Mexicanas" from 2017 featuring a six man "Lucha Libre Rules" tag team match between Dos Caras, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., and Villano IV vs El Canek and Los Hermanos Dinamitas (Cien Caras and Máscara Año 2000).

An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit.
