Worst in the World: Dos Caras, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., and Villano IV vs El Canek and Los Hermanos Dinamitas-CMLL Leyendas Mexicanas 2017
Special thanks to Jorge Dueñas for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.
In recent years, WWE has received criticism for its reliance on old stars on their shows. Specifically, with their Saudi Arabia propaganda events, WWE has routinely booked their aging wrestlers to go out and wrestle despite being well past their primes. While this doesn't seem to have negatively affected the active members of the roster not named Bray Wyatt, the matches are still borderline unbearable, with two of these matches (DX vs Brothers of Destruction at Crown Jewel 2018 and The Undertaker vs Goldberg at Super ShowDown 2019) being considered the worst matches of their respective years. With that being said, WWE can't even hold a candle to the use of aging wrestlers in Mexico. AAA's version of WrestleMania, TriplemanÃa XXVII, featured the main event of Blue Demon Jr. (53) vs Dr. Wagner Jr. (54) for a combined age of 107. That would be the equivalent of that Undertaker-Goldberg match main eventing WrestleMania. However, the match that takes the cake in the use of the elderly wrestlers department has to be from Leyendas Mexicanas 2017.
Produced by CMLL, famous for where you send'em to get polished up and learn a lucha libre, Leyendas Mexicanas is an annual show centered on celebrating the history of lucha libre and features legends returning for matches. The main event of the 2017 edition saw the team of Dos Caras (the brother of legendary luchador Mil Máscaras and father of former WWE Champion and piece of shit Alberto Del Rio), Rayo de Jalisco Jr, and Villano IV (last seen on the Worst in the World when the Villanos faced Los Psycho Circus at TripleMania XXIII) take on the team of El Canek and brothers Cien Caras (no relation to Dos) and Máscara Año 2000 of Los Hermanos Dinamitas in a traditional lucha libre rules six-man tag, meaning it's two out of three falls and you need to get a fall on each member of each team to get the actual fall. I think that's the rule, I've tried looking it up but I haven't found anything to confirm that, so I might be wrong. The combined age of everyone in this match: 367. To put that in perspective, the youngest person in this match, Villano IV at 52, is only one year younger than the oldest person in the DX-Brothers of Destruction match, the Undertaker at 53. The oldest person in this match, Cien Caras, was 68 at the time. It doesn't get much older than this.
Now, I don't always talk about entrances, but I feel like these entrances are alarming considering what kind of show we are watching. After Dos Caras' team makes their entrances, El Canek comes out from the back along with a small child in a mask, who Canek is seemingly holding onto for dear life.It is painfully apparent that that child is there so El Canek doesn't fall over coming down the steps. This man is about to wrestle a professional wrestling match and he is having difficulty walking down the stairs. That is not good. Cien Caras doesn't fare much better, walking down the stairs at a pace so slow that Albert Pujols would be jealous. Again, these men are about to wrestle a professional wrestling match.
Jalisco and Cien Caras start the match by playing up the crowd and then teasing a lock-up before Caras gets out of the ring. After literally not touching once, Villano IV and Máscara Año 2000 tag in and lock up, over two minutes after the match started. The two chain wrestle slowly, with Villano able to get a takedown followed by an arm drag. Dos Caras and El Canek tag in and continue the trend of slow chain wrestling with lots of pauses. The two go back and forth before shaking hands and tagging Jalisco and Cien Caras back in. Caras hits the first strike before kicking Jalisco. Caras goes for either a clothesline or a knee, neither of which connect but Jalisco sells anyway. Caras appears to go for another...whatever that was...but Jalisco catches him with a knee, followed by a dropkick in which Jalisco manages to get about 1cm at most off the ground.
Jalisco follows up with a jumping...something. It looks like he's going for a running headbutt, but he doesn't really turn so he just kind of jumps and Caras runs into him. Jalisco makes the cover before everyone runs in the ring, with Villano hitting the same move on Máscara and making the cover. Dos Caras opts against whatever that move they're trying to do is and rolls up Canek. The referee counts all three men down and Dos Caras' team wins the first fall. Dos Caras and Máscara start the second fall trading full nelsons. Cien Caras tries to run in to break it up when Dos Caras has control, but every time he does, Dos Caras turns and uses Máscara as a human shield. That was pretty great, not gonna lie. Máscara reverses it and locks in a full nelson of his own, only for Cien to try to kick Dos Caras. Dos dodges it and Cien hits his own partner. Dos goes for the cover, only to move when Cien tries to elbow drop him, inadvertently hitting his teammate again. Dos goes for a double pin, only to avoid another attack from Canek, who accidentally splashes his teammates. The rudos/heels (I think they're the rudos) argue before Villano IV tags in. He and Máscara trade blows and moves, including a shockingly quick arm drag by Villano. Well, quick by comparison at least. Villano kicks Máscara, leading to each rudo walking up to Villano and getting kicked before Villano almost kicks the referee.
Canek & Máscara double team Villano before elbowing him out of the ring. Dos Caras enters the ring (no one is tagging, but from what I understand that's just kind of what they do in Mexico) and gets triple-teamed before Canek hits a spin kick for the three on Dos. Jalisco gets triple-teamed and pinned, even though I don't think any actual move is hit before Villano submits to an elevated double Stump Puller by Máscara and Canek to officially win the fall.
The third and final fall begins with the rudos beating down the técnicos/faces. This goes on until the técnicos throw the rudos into each other before we get a six-man rowboat spot. Jalisco & Villano roll up Cien Caras and Canek, but both kick out. Dos Caras locks in the world's worst abdominal stretch before Cien Caras tries to run the ropes. It is the saddest thing I've ever seen. This 68-year old man who could barely walk down the stairs takes eight steps to get to the ropes before Jalisco knocks him down. Suddenly, Nueva Generacion Dinamitas, which consists of Cien Caras' sons El Cuatrero and Sansón and Cien & Máscara's nephew Forastero, run down and attack the técnicos, causing a DQ in the final fall. The rudos beatdown the técnicos before leaving the ring. Jalisco takes the mic and, while I don't know Spanish, from what I understand is that he challenged Cien Caras (who was the oldest person in the match) to a singles match...and Caras accepted. As far as I can tell, this match never happened...thankfully.
The Verdict
I don't really know how to rate this. The match is bad, obviously, but it's almost unfair to grade this like a normal match. All of these men were clearly past their primes...by a lot...and most of them can't even run, let alone wrestle anymore, but at the same time, this a show focused on legendary luchadors. Expecting something like Octagón and El Hijo del Santo vs Los Gringos Locos is not realistic. Still, this match is pretty terrible, but it's not like I was expecting anything good to begin with. Don't watch this.

Thanks for the review. You can also see the Chief Jay Strongbow Vs. Don Kent Shark Cage Match or Sting vs Jeff Jarrett at Halloween Havoc 2000
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestions! I might have to pass on the Shark Cage match (I can't find much information on it and there really isn't much to write about it aside from "they punched each other a lot") but Sting vs Jarrett is definitely something I'd cover here
DeleteIron Sheik vs Mighty Maccabee Grandmasters of Wrestling is definitely worth considering
