Worst in the World: The Golden Truth vs Breezango-Money in the Bank 2016

(Special thanks to Otter Empire for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
Comedy wrestling is one of the more divisive topics in wrestling right now. I for one think that comedy matches have their place in professional wrestling. I can sit down and enjoy an Orange Cassidy match, I've already preached my love for things like the Broken Hardys in TNA and the Firefly Fun House match, and I can't lie, The Wee-LC match between Hornswoggle & El Torito was significantly more fun than it had any business being. However, the most important thing about comedy wrestling is...the comedy. Because just like in film and TV, comedy isn't something that can venture into "so bad it's good" territory like horror or drama. If comedy is bad...it's just bad. And there's been no shortage of bad comedy matches. I've covered quite a few of them in this series, and there will absolutely be more to come, but for now, let's take a look at this match; The Golden Truth (R-Truth & Goldust) vs Breezango (Fandango & Tyler Breeze) from the Money in the Bank 2016 pre-show.
For a pre-show match, this build is shockingly deep. In January 2016, Goldust proposed forming a tag team with R-Truth. That kickstarted months of vignettes between the two that later involved Fandango & Tyler Breeze, creating two new tag teams in "Goldango" with Goldust & Fandango and "The Gorgeous Truth" with Truth & Breeze, only for Fandango & Breeze to both turn on their partners in May and form Breezango, setting up this match. On paper, a match involving these four shouldn't have been too bad. They're all talented in-ring workers. Sure, Breezango wasn't quite at their comedic peak with the Fashion Files skits and Golden Truth had already managed to overstay their welcome because of the unnecessarily long four-month build to becoming a team, but this should've still been a fun match. Unfortunately, bad comedy got in the way. We get a vignette showing Breezango going tanning together, which the Golden Truth sabotages by turning up the heat in the tanning bed. Breezango doesn't get the Final Destination 3 treatment, but they do get badly sunburned. You can probably tell where this is going. Let's get into this.
The Golden Truth comes out first, followed by Breezango, who painfully make their entrances as their sunburn skin is peeling.
Mauro Ranallo says there's finally something "appealing" about Breezango on commentary. I love Mauro Ranallo and his dad jokes. Truth and Fandango start and you get exactly what you'd expect. The two try to lock up, but Fandango sells it because of his sunburn. Truth offers to let Fandango lock in a wristlock, only for Truth to turn around instantly and chop him. This is the majority of the match, Truth & Goldust slapping Breezango, who oversell like hell because they're badly burnt. It's kind of...uncomfortable. Maybe I'm just over-analyzing it, but the babyfaces got turned on by the heels, so they got their revenge by...potentially giving them melanoma and are now exploiting the disadvantage they gave the heels. Are we sure Golden Truth are the babyfaces here?
Truth keeps chopping Fandango before he retreats to his corner and forcefully tags in Breeze, who sells the tag. Truth tags in Goldust and the two double chop Breeze repeatedly. Goldust chops Breeze some more and goes for Shattered Dreams, but Breeze fights out, only for a flying nothing off the second rope to be countered with a shot to the gut. Truth tags in, but Breeze manages the first real offensive move for Breezango of the match when he knees Truth in the gut. Fandango tags back in, but Truth quickly regains control by repeatedly slapping Fandango's back. Truth hits the 10 punches in the corner and calls for the Scissor Kick, but Breeze lowers the ropes to break it up. Truth catches this and chops his back in retort.
This match has one joke and it doesn't give a fuck if you're not laughing. This horse isn't just dead, it's completely decomposed.
The distraction allows Fandango to take control with a chop block before dropping a few knees on Truth's leg, which he sells because if you haven't figured it out, then you can't read. Breezango double teams Truth until Truth hits a jumping leg lariat on Fandango. Both men tag out and Goldust runs wild on Breeze, chopping away at him before pulverizing Fandango's dick, countering a flying nothing with an Inverted Atomic Drop. Goldust follows up with an Atomic Drop on Breeze, but Breeze counters a charging Goldust and sends him into the corner. Fandango tags back in for a double clothesline spot, but Goldust dodges it. Truth pulls Breeze out of the ring before Goldust hits the Final Cut (a swinging vertical suplex) for the three and the win.

The Verdict

It is the same joke over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over...and over...again. And the joke isn't even that funny, to begin with. Like, Breezango's entrance and the opening lock-up spots are fine, and that's it. The worst part is that this repetitive bad joke actually takes away from the match a lot. Like I said in the into, Breezango & the Golden Truth could have absolutely had a good, or at least fun match on their own. Unfortunately, they have to work around the gimmick, and the match quality suffers greatly because of it. This was not fun whatsoever. It's not the worst comedy match I've ever seen, but it's certainly a dud if I've ever seen one.

  1. At least they didn't put this one on PPV, just the kickoff show.

A bit on the odder side for this next request, and it may also allow for you to dive into another element of what classifies as "Worst in the World" for professional wrestling: Wrestlemania X-7's Gimmick Battle Royale. Granted, this match served its purpose: to try and give the crowd a break and allow for a reset after the amazing Triple Threat TLC Match for the Tag Titles. However, in terms of actual wrestling, not great, and it will also give you a chance to discuss some of the oddest gimmicks of all time.

    1. I'd love to cover the Gimmick Battle Royal, that one should be a lot of fun. I've got a pretty big list compiled between my picks & other suggestions, but I'll get to it as soon as I can

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
