Worst in the World: Rocky Maivia vs Savio Vega: A Trilogy of Terror

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting two of the three matches covered here. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
Last time on the Worst in the World, I made a first (and, spoiler alert, not the last) entry in the series to feature Kazuchika Okada, one of the most critically lauded wrestlers in history. Well, thanks to some recommendations from Frost, I'll be covering a match from another all-time great for the first time in the series; The Rock. Unlike with Okada, however, I was actually surprised to look back and see that the Great One has never been featured here. I am in no way saying that The Rock is a bad wrestler, as he has more than a few great matches to his name. It's just that when you talk about The Rock, his promo skills and charisma tend to get more attention than his in-ring work. As such, The Rock has had a few stinkers throughout his career, especially from before he got his iconic nickname.
Dwayne No Nickname Johnson was just 25 years old and only 20 matches into his professional wrestling career when he made his televised debut in the WWF at Survivor Series 1996 as part of one of the events' titular matches, using the ring name Rocky Maivia. A member of the famous Anoa'i family and a member of the 1991 National Champion Miami Hurricanes college football team, the WWF clearly had high hopes for Maivia, giving him a big babyface push right out the gate. Maivia would be the sole survivor of the aforementioned Survivor Series match and, just over three months after his debut, defeated fellow future main eventer Hunter Hearst Helmsley to win the Intercontinental Championship. Unfortunately for the WWF, the fans were nowhere near as thrilled with the blue chip prospect as the company was.
While the legitimacy of the infamous "Die Rocky Die" chants that Maivia referenced in his first heel promo might've been exaggerated beyong THAT sign:
The negative reception he received was all too real, and it was clear that the audience was not going to get behind Maivia, at least not in his clean-cut, blue chip variant. It actually proved to be a blessing in disguise, as the hostile reactions led to Maivia turning heel and joining the Nation of Domination, where he really started to shine in his new role, along with changing his name to the now-iconic "The Rock" on route to becoming one of the biggest stars in the history of wrestling, and later one of the biggest stars in film. However, that route was a bumpy one early on, and a big reason for that was Maivia's inexperience in the ring.
As I mentioned, Maivia debuted in the WWF at Survivor Series 1996, but his earliest recorded match was in March of that same year. That's only eight months, so any refining of his skills and growing pains were going to be broadcast for everyone to see. As expected, Maivia's body of work early in his career does not measure up, especially against his work from his prime. The Rock still had some bad matches even at his peak, but his earliest matches in the WWF are generally considered his worst. The low point of Maivia's early career comes from his match-up with Savio Vega at In Your House 14: Revenge of the Taker...except, it doesn't end there. Because, for some strange reason, the WWF thought that continuously putting Maivia and Vega in matches together in 1997 made for great television, and it never got any better. In total, the two wrestled three singles matches on three different TV shows, and every single one was bad. It's time to look at this terrible trilogy of matches.

Match #1: Shotgun Saturday Night

As I said earlier, this post came to be thanks to a recommendation from Frost. However, Frost only recommended the latter two matches in this trilogy. As with the last post, in researching those two matches, I discovered that Maivia & Vega faced off one other time in 1997, and while it only has a single 4/10 rating on Cagematch.net, the review left by that user gives me the impression that the pair didn't fare any better the first time they faced off. And besides, there's no way I'm gonna pass up the chance to talk about Shotgun Saturday Night.
Premiering in 1997, the first six episodes of Shotgun Saturday Night are probably the most unique the WWF has ever gotten with their regular show presentation. For starters, the choice of venues skewed away from the arenas that Raw would regularly run in, instead emanating from various locations in New York City (and San Antonio one time, for some reason) such as the Mirage Nightclub and even in Penn Station, the latter of which gave us the fun moment where the Undertaker gave Hunter Hearst Helmsley a Tombstone Piledriver at the top of an escalator. Honestly, seeing a WWF show take place in venues like these is a bit of a trip. Even a show like NXT, which takes place in a smaller arena, still takes place in a clear arena. Shotgun Saturday Night would legit have Undertaker and the future Triple H wrestling in the middle of a train station. In the nightclub episodes, you'd even see wrestlers dancing in the club during the show.
Another thing that made the O.G. episodes of the show unique was the edgier product. Sure, Shotgun Saturday Night came post Austin 3:16 and Pillman's Got a Gun, but 1997 was not full-blown Attitude Era just yet. For reference, around the time these six shows aired, Raw was featuring whacky New Generation gimmicks like Fake Diesel & Razor Ramon, Leif Cassidy, The Sultan, and Aldo Montoya, just to name a few. The very first episode of Shotgun Saturday Night saw a match between Goldust and The Sultan, which featured a spot where Goldust's valet Marlena pulled down her dress and flash the Sultan (with her back to the camera, of course.) This more risque product could easily be considered a precursor to the Attitude Era, in a way. But alas, the original Shotgun Saturday Night was not long for this world. After just six episodes, the WWF took the show out of the nightclubs and into the arenas, taping the episodes following Monday Night Raw, effectively turning it into a regular B-show until it was replaced by Jakked/Metal in 1999. Shotgun Saturday Night has effectively been cast aside in modern times, as none of the episodes are available on Peacock (or, if you live outside America, on the WWE Network you lucky bastard) as of writing this.
Luckily, various users have uploaded the episodes to YouTube, including the fourth episode from January 25th, 1997. It was here where Rocky Maivia and Savio Vega squared off in singles action for the first time. Rocky was just over two months into his WWF career at this point, while Vega had literally just turned heel earlier in the day at a Madison Square Garden house show, turning on his partner Ahmed Johnson in a tag match and seemingly joining the Nation of Domination. This is a weird time for the Nation, as it comes before the most famous iteration of the group that formed later this same year, and instead featured guys like Crush and the tag team PG-13. Fun fact about PG-13, they're the only two members who were part of both the WWF's version and the original group United States Wrestling Association. But with that out of the way, let's get into this.
Rocky's already in the ring when the show comes back from a recap of the 1997 Royal Rumble. It's here that we get another thing that was unique about Shotgun Saturday Night's presentation; less-than-serious chyrons:
A young Adam Page takes notes. Meanwhile, Todd Pettengill interviews Savio Vega as he heads to the ring, questioning what happened at Madison Square Garden. Vega also gets a fun chyron saying he's "had a real bad day." Vega says that he hasn't joined the Nation of Domination, but that his "hot Puerto Rican temper" got the best of him. He ends by cutting a promo in Spanish before entering the ring. The bell rings before the two trade waist locks. The two go back and forth, trading holds and shoulder blocks as the crowd chants for the Blue World Order. More holds are traded before Vega gets a two-count off a pinning combination. Rocky tries to respond with a wristlock, but Vega takes him down and puts on a leg lock. Suddenly, the Nation of Domination comes down to the ring before a commercial break.
When the show comes back, the match has come to a complete standstill, as Rocky & Vega stand side by side while the Nation throws up the fist salute. Vega takes the opportunity to clock Rocky, beating him down before throwing up the fist himself, officially joining the Nation. Vega chops Rocky before beating him down in the corner. Vega follows up with a back body drop before beating him around the ring some more. Rocky gets some offense in with a crossbody for a near fall, but Vega quickly pounces on him, taking Rocky down with a snapmare before locking in a nerve hold. Get used to reading that. As this happens, Todd Pettengill tries to interview Faarooq at ringside, but he has none of it before Crush threatens him. Vega has kept the nerve hold on this whole time, eventually breaking it to stomp Rocky before hitting a snap suplex for a near fall. Vega beats down Rocky before locking in another nerve hold. A follow-up attempt at a knee lift is countered, however, when Rocky counters with a roll-up for a near fall.
Rocky follows up with a clothesline and a chop, but Vega regains control with a nice spinning heel kick. Vega quickly goes back to the nerve hold, eventually breaking to beat down on Rocky. Rocky starts to fight back, but Vega catches Rocky with a knee in the corner for a near fall. Right back to the fucking nerve hold for Vega. That's four in this match alone, it's like it's the only rest hold he knows how to do. Vega continues beating down Rocky, eventually locking in YET ANOTHER NERVE HOLD. Just to make it worse for the WWF, this is when we get some very audible "ROCKY SUCKS" chants from fans on the hard camera. This apparently motivates Rocky, however, as he begins trading blows & chops with Vega. Vega gets the better of the exchange, however, and hits a snapmare before giving us NERVE HOLD #6. Please end this. Rocky eventually turns the tides, dodging a corner splash from Vega before punching him to the ground. Rocky runs wild, hitting two clotheslines and a back suplex for a near fall. Vega responds by tossing Rocky out of the ring, where Rocky injures his knee, leaving him unable to get back in the ring and get counted out. I sat through all of that for a COUNTOUT. I hate this. Vega drags Rocky back into the ring, targeting his injured knee as he beats him down. The rest of the Nation enters the ring to join in on the beatdown, with Faarooq whipping Rocky with his belt. Referees run in to try to stop the beatdown, only for Vega to toss Rocky back out of the ring. The Nation stands tall to close the segment.

The Verdict

Painfully uninteresting. Very few actual spots in the match, and none of them are all that exciting. Not to mention that Savio Vega just keeps putting on nerve holds throughout the entire thing. Rest holds are generally pretty unexciting, as their purpose is to allow wrestlers to regain their energy mid-match, but nerve holds are easily the most boring rest hold of them all. It is doesn't even look good, it's just putting a hand on your opponent's shoulder. Doing two is pushing it, doing six is just taking the piss at that point. On top of all that, a countout finish after a match this lame just adds insult to injury. There was just about nothing enjoyable about any of this.

Match #2: Monday Night Raw

Apparently, the WWF didn't learn from how poor Rocky and Vega's first match was, because two and a half months later, the company decided to not only have them wrestle on TV again, and not only to have them wrestle on the main show Monday Night Raw, but to have them wrestle to build to a pay-per-view match. The New Generation was an awful time to be alive. Our second match comes to us from the April 14, 1997 edition of Raw. The show is a weird mash-up of matches from a live event in Johannesburg, South Africa, and one from a live event in Indiana. I don't know why they did this. One of the matches from the South Africa event was yet another match-up between Rocky Maivia and Savio Vega. By this point, Vega was firmly a member of the Nation of Domination, while Rocky had beaten Hunter Hearst Helmsley two months prior to win the Intercontinental Championship. Would their second match-up fare better than the first? This was one of the matches that actually got recommended to me, so take your best guess with that in mind.
The two trade holds and arm drags to start the match. The two continue to go back and forth as we get a picture-in-picture interview with Ahmed Johnson. Nothing of note is said and nothing interesting happens in the match. More back and forth action goes down until Rocky hits a nice back elbow followed by an arm drag. Rocky works the arm, eventually breaking the hold before...hitting another arm drag and going back to working the arm. The two trade blows in the corner before Vega hits a spinning heel kick before choking Rocky three times. That's enough variety because it's time for the NERVE HOLDS. This time, however, Vega does switch it up a bit by applying a chinlock at the same time. It's the thought that counts, I guess. Rocky fights back, scoring a near fall off a sunset flip, but Vega quickly regains control with yet another nerve hold. That is eight between these two matches so far. Also, at this point, the commentary disappears, so there is nothing to focus on other than the match. Faarooq comes down to ringside with his arm in a sleeve as the show goes to a commercial.
We come back to basically the same thing, with Vega holding Rocky in a nerve hold/chinlock combo. I don't even wanna know how many times he put it on during the commercial break, but for now, we're at three for this match, and nine over the two matches. There's still no commentary as Rocky fights out, only to get knocked right back down with a nice spinning heel kick. Vega goes back to the nerve hold for the 4th time this match (10 in total), with Vega cutting off a comeback attempt with punches and stomps before going RIGHT BACK TO THE NERVE HOLD. I have now watched Savio Vega apply a nerve hold 11 different times in two matches. I'm starting to think I need a new hobby. Vega goes for a cocky pin with one foot on Rocky's chest, but Rocky kicks out. More stomps before we get ANOTHER NERVE HOLD (#12), but Rocky eventually fights out and hits a crossbody for a near fall.
Vega quickly regains control and, after some punches and stomps, does exactly what you think he's going to do. ANOTHER NERVE HOLD (#13) is applied as Rocky starts to fade, prompting the referee to raise his hand and drop it three times. We're really doing this spot for a FUCKING NERVE HOLD? Rocky keeps his hand up on the third drop and fights out of the hold, but an attempt at a slam is countered when Vega slips out and rolls up Rocky, who quickly kicks out. Commentary has finally come back as Vega quickly follows up with a crossbody off the second rope for a near fall, only for Rocky to respond with a slingshot into the corner. Rocky goes for a monkey flip in the corner, but Vega blocks it and sends Rocky into the corner. Rocky dodges a charging Vega and hits a back suplex, leaving both men on the mat. Rocky eventually crawls over to make the cover, but Vega kicks out. Rocky runs wild, punching away at Vega before dodging a spinning heel kick and hitting a fisherman suplex for a near fall. Vega pounces on Rocky, only for Rocky to hit a not-yet-named Rock Bottom for a near fall. Rocky follows up with a DDT and a kip-up before going to the top rope for a diving crossbody. Rocky calls for his finisher, the running shoulder breaker, but Vega slips out, shoves Rocky into the corner, and rolls up Rocky with a handful of tights for the three and the win. The rest of the Nation of Domination pounces on Rocky, with Faarooq whipping Rocky with a leather strap before Ahmed Johnson runs down with a 2x4 in hand. Johnson clears the ring to close the segment.

The Verdict

This match was brutally boring. Granted, when Rocky and Vega are actually doing spots, it's a pretty fun time. But those moments are so few and far between, and so much of this match is just Savio Vega putting on a nerve hold. Seven fucking times in this match alone. I actually can't believe I'd never heard about how bad this match was until I got the recommendation and I watched the episode of Reliving the War from Wrestling Bios about this episode. This match does have a little bit more going on than when the Shotgun Saturday Night match, and at least this match had some kind of an actual finish. But still, this is a match you should absolutely skip at all costs.

Match #3: Revenge of the Taker

Well, both of these matches have been complete dog ass, but the WWF had Vega pin the Intercontinental Champion, so now they've got a pay-per-view match. Six days after stinking up the joint in South Africa, Rocky Maivia and Savio Vega were set for one last clash, this time with Rocky defending the Intercontinental Championship against Vega at In Your House 14: Revenge of the Taker. Revenge of the Taker is pretty much a two-match show and, needless to say, Maivia/Vega III is not one of those matches. Let's wrap up this trilogy with one of The Rock's lowest-rated matches ever.
Vega tries to get the jump on Rocky when he enters the ring, but Rocky gains the upper hand, punching away at Vega before knocking a member of PG-13 (I have no idea which one) off the ring apron. Rocky continues the offense, hitting two arm drags as Faarooq, his arm still in a sling, comes down to join commentary, where he challenges Ahmed Johnson to face the entire Nation of Domination. During this time, Rocky stays in control with two more arm drags before working over the arm. Rocky stays in control until Vega hits a spinning heel kick in the corner. Vega beats down on Rocky before tossing him into the corner, eventually deciding that the match has been too exciting at this point because he locks nerve hold #14 of this series. I am now a verified Savio Vega hater having watched these matches and all his nerve holds. I hope he has a terrible day.
Rocky fights out and hits a crossbody for a near fall, but Vega fires back with chops before going back to the nerve hold (#15.) He literally breaks the hold just so can stomp Rocky once and then reapply it. I don't care if they're three seconds apart, that's nerve hold #16. Rocky fights out of the hold and scores a near fall on a roll-up, but Vega responds with a big boot. Vega chokes Rocky twice before putting the nerve hold (#17) on once again, but Rocky fights out and hits a fisherman suplex. Rocky holds on to make the cover, but the Nation's D'Lo Brown hops up on the ring apron to distract the referee, allowing Vega to regain control with a nice spinning roundhouse kick. Vega can actually do some really cool & exciting kicks, it's just that they're usually followed up by a boring nerve hold. Vega chops Rocky in the corner before hitting a hip toss for a near fall. Just like I said, we get ANOTHER FUCKING NERVE HOLD (#18), but Rocky fights out and ducks a spinning heel kick before hitting the float-over DDT, but a delayed cover allows Vega to kick out.
Vega slips out of a slam attempt and rolls up Rocky with a hand full of tights, but history doesn't repeat itself, as Rocky kicks out, sending Vega into the ring post in the process. Rocky dodges a charging Vega in the corner before hitting a back suplex followed by a kip-up and a belly-to-belly suplex for a near fall. Rocky follows up with the pre-Rock Bottom for a near fall, followed by a backslide for another before Vega tosses Rocky out of the ring and onto Crush at ringside. Vega distracts the referee as Crush delivers the Heart Punch to Rocky. Vega then MAKES NO EFFORT TO GET ROCKY BACK IN THE RING, letting him get counted out and costing himself the Intercontinental Championship. He then argues with Crush as the rest of the Nation intervenes. Faarooq orders PG-13 to drag Rocky back into the ring so the Nation can beat him up while Faarooq whips him with his leather strap. It is the EXACT SAME THING THAT HAS HAPPENED AFTER ALL OF THESE MATCHES. Ahmed Johnson runs down with his 2x4 to make the save...which is the EXACT SAME THING THAT HAPPENED ON RAW! I hate this. Johnson then accepts Faarooq's challenge as he & Rocky stand tall.

The Verdict

This match is significantly easier to digest than the other two matches. There is a lot more happening throughout, which probably has to do with the shorter length. It's still not good, however, as it's a pretty bland match without much going on, and it ends in a countout. On a pay-per-view. For shame. It's not as bad as the other two matches, but it's still not worth watching, and thankfully, it was the last time Rocky Maivia and Savio Vega wrestled each other one-on-one.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoy and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered in the Worst in the World in the comments. Next time, I'll be going back to New Japan and taking a look at their disastrous attempt to elevate a midcarder into the main event. Until then...

  1. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Wrestling Bios likes to have fun with the rest holds in most of the videos, especially the legendary "Davey Boy Smith Chinlock" but when he covered the Raw match of the trilogy he flipped out. At least when Steiner hit all of the Suplexes on Triple H, they were actual moves. I don't know exactly why Vega felt he needed to average SIX nerve holds per match against Rocky, maybe they were trying to work out spots for later in the match like Davey and Bret did in their London Summerslam match. Also, my condolences for having to make you watch this crap.

  2. I absolutely died everytime you wrote that he put on a nerve hold

Also thoughts on Cody Rhodes returning to WWE?

    1. Thanks! As for Cody, I'm cautiously optimistic. I think they can do a lot of great things with him, but I'd be lying if I said I had a lot of faith in WWE to actually do it. The fact that he's keeping the same presentation he had outside of WWE is a good sign though.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Match #1: vs Charlotte Flair-April 10th, 2017 Raw The first match we'll be looking at is from the April 10, 2017 episode of Monday Night Raw, when Nia took on Charlotte Flair. The two had been on the losing e...

Worst in the World: Eric Young & Shark Boy vs Generation Me-TNA Destination X 2011

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However... In what has become somewhat of a footnote in their careers, the Young Bucks had been on a nationally televised wrestlin...
