Worst in the World: Santino Marella vs Heath Slater-WWE Friday Night SmackDown (9/27/2013)

(Special thanks to Otter Empire for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.)
It is time for some wacky shit. This is actually the first time I'll be covering a match from SmackDown in this series, and there's a good reason for that; SmackDown, for the majority of its existence, was a pre-taped show. This meant that, should a notably bad match take place on the blue show, it could be edited and altered to make it more palatable. That being said, there were definitely still bad matches that made it to air on SmackDown, and this is one of them. Santino Marella & Heath Slater faced off on the September 27, 2013 edition of SmackDown, a show that had pretty much nothing of substance on it...kind of like every SmackDown that happened between the two brand splits. Despite the throwaway nature of this episode, the two managed to have a notable match in all the wrong ways. This is easily one of the weirdest non-cinematic matches WWE has put on in the last decade, so let's get into it.
Heath Slater does not get a televised entrance, so guess who's not winning this match? Slater is already in the ring when the show comes back from commercial, accompanied by his 3MB stablemates Jinder Mahal and Drew McIntyre. Imagine telling someone in 2013 that two-thirds of the heel jobber trio would be future WWE Champions. On a related note, Heath Slater; just get shredded and come back. There's still time. Santino makes his way out, accompanied to the ring by the Great Khali and Hornswoggle. The match starts with the two blocking each other's kicks, ending with Slater clocking Santino. Slater stomps away at Santino before making the cover for a one fall. Slater elbows away at Santino before slapping on a headlock. Santino fights out and hits a big hip toss, but his falling headbutt catches Slater's knees. Slater gets a near fall of that before going to the top rope, only for Santino to knock him down and crotch him on the top rope. Slater falls to the canvas, which means it's time for the snake. Santino pulls his arm sleeve out of his singlet and sets up for the Cobra...and then this happens:
Jinder Mahal hops up on the ring apron...with a recorder. Michael Cole calls it a flute. He is wrong. (UPDATE; It has come to my attention that recorders are, in fact, flutes. Please disregard that statement) Mahal starts playing a snake charming song. Whatever just popped into your head when you read "snake charming song" is probably exactly what he was playing. And I use the word "playing" loosely because they've very clearly just dubbed in the song while Mahal mimicked playing it. Naturally, because "arm + sleeve = snake", the Cobra is charmed and leads Santino over to Mahal. However, the Great Khali responds by...grabbing his own recorder and playing the same song, charming Santino over to him.
Does he...keep that on him at all times? Mahal obviously planned to do this, but Khali wouldn't know that. Also, there's not a chance in hell that Khali or Mahal's mimicking is matching the song, I refuse to believe it. I need one of those videos comparing drumming in animated shows to actual drums, but for recorders, ASAP. Mahal and Khali have a recorder battle, attempting to keep Santino on their side until McIntyre runs over and hops on the apron to distract Khali. Khali responds with a chop to the head, and then just abandons playing while Mahal charms the Cobra, making it set its sights on Santino himself. This is super dumb, but I'll give Santino credit, he is not half-assing this.
The man is a professional. Santino is saved when Hornswoggle runs over, pulling Mahal off the apron and snapping the recorder over his knee. That, however, distracts Santino long enough for Slater to hit a leg lariat. The move doesn't leave Santino down for long, as Khali starts playing again, charming the Cobra and Santino up. Santino hits the Cobra for the three and the win.

The Verdict

An absolute throwaway match (which again, is not out of the ordinary for SmackDown around this time) with an extremely goofy premise surrounding it. It's very short, clocking in at under three minutes, so it's not the worst thing to sit through, but there's really no reason to watch this.

  1. I've been enjoying this series a lot, and I don't think I've commented before, but I have a very pedantic nitpick - a recorder is technically a flute, as flutes are just reedless woodwinds.

    1. I actually didn't know that. I was a choir kid in high school, so I don't know much about instruments.

  2. Can we have a timeframe hint for this upcoming Raw match? Because there certainly have been some bombs in the illustrious history of MNR.

    1. Another hint; it doesn't feature any wrestlers on the full-time main roster at the time

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20...

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like...

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse ...

Worst in the World: Nia Jax's Worst Matches

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Nia Jax's first run with the WWE can really only be described as hard to watch. Sure, she had a few stand-out matches, most notably (and surprisingly) her match with Ronda Rousey at Money in the Bank, and an underrated gem with Bayley at NXT TakeOver: London, but those were always outshined by her most infamous matches and moments. She's since returned to WWE and, for the most part, seems to have improved a bit, but the reputation she got from her initial run is gonna be hard to shake off. This week, I'll be looking at some of Jax's worst matches. These include just flat-out bad matches, and matches that have become infamous examples of her reckless in-ring work. Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, few tag teams made as much noise on the independent scene as the Young Bucks. Really breaking out at a time when WWE made their tag division a borderline afterthought, Matt & Nick Jackson were almost unmatched in terms of elite matches on the indys, most notably in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla & Ring of Honor before joining New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club, becoming mainstays of the group as it reached its peak throughout the mid-2010s. Sure, their style hasn't endeared them to old-school wrestling fans, but you can't deny their impact on wrestling. And with the arrival of All Elite Wrestling in 2019, North American fans would finally get to see the Young Bucks on national television for the first time... However...
