Worst in the World: An AEW Fyter Fest 2019 Double Feature

In 2019, All Elite Wrestling held its first official event Double or Nothing. It was a huge success, drawing rave reviews from wrestling critics and fans, selling out tickets in minutes, drawing a reported pay-per-view buy rate of over 100,000, and establishing itself as a serious alternative to the WWE. And of course, this show also created significant buzz for their next big pay-per-view; All Out...except there were a few stops between then, with one of them being the inaugural Fyter Fest. Looking back, Fyter Fest, and by extension, the following pay-per-view Fight for the Fallen feels like an anomaly considering AEW doesn't do monthly pay-per-views. Fyter Fest 2020 was apparently going to be a pay-per-view before the pandemic hit, but even before that, AEW wasn't running a monthly pay-per-view schedule. But alas, Fyter Fest was held one month after Double or Nothing, and it was...fine. It's by no means a bad show, with the final three matches (Cody vs Darby Allin, The Elite vs Lucha Bros and Laredo Kid, and Jon Moxley vs Joey Janela) all being fun watches, but it is pretty clearly a smaller affair than Double or Nothing. Two matches on the card, however, left a lot to be desired, and they both came from the Fyter Fest Buy-In, aka the pre-show. Granted, both of those matches were going to have trouble following up the excellent triple threat tag match between the Best Friends, Frankie Kazarian & Scorpio Sky of SCU, and the debuting Private Party (side note, Private Party is awesome and I wish AEW would do more with them), but even on their own, these are rough watches. Let's take a look at them.

Match #1: Allie vs Leva Bates

The first match I'll be taking a look at is Allie vs Leva Bates. Given that one of the biggest knocks against AEW is how poorly they've run the women's division, you can probably tell where this is going. This was originally going to be Kylie Rae vs Leva Bates, but Allie was subbed in. There's never been a clear answer as to why the match changed, and by extension why Kylie left AEW, so I'd rather not speculate. Allie is the former Cherry Bomb who's just finished her three-year stint in Impact, while Bates is a veteran of the independents famous for her cosplay attires, and NXT fans would recognize her for short-run as Blue Pants.
She had pants...and they were blue...I don't know how to explain it, but she was really over as Blue Pants. The match holds just a 2.85 rating on Cagematch.net, and got just half a star from Dave Meltzer. Let's get into this.
Leva Bates is out first and...
I guess I have to try to explain this. Leva Bates is...the Librarian. She has books, she shushes people, and she dresses like a librarian...that's it, and it did not get over. I know that it was just a silly gimmick for a lower-card wrestler, but this reeks of WWF New Generation era occupational gimmicks. I'm half expecting T.L. Hopper and the Goon to come out after this. It just didn't work. As Bates shushes the crowd, we suddenly hear another person shushing. Bates quickly checks the tent on the stage (which fits in with the Fyre Fest theme of the show) to find Peter Avalon...who is the Librarian...as well.
Yes...there are two librarians...feuding over who gets to be AEW's "official Librarian"...I don't know why they did this. I guess this originated on the Elite's YouTube show Being the Elite, so I figure it's just something that makes the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and Cody laugh. Avalon gets a chorus of boos when he destroys a bikini-clad mannequin on stage (which replaced a human woman because they "couldn't afford it", in keeping with the Fyre Fest theme) before the two walk down to the ring. They both tell everyone to read books before repeatedly shushing each other until Allie comes out.
The match starts with Bates avoiding a lock-up and shushing Allie. They repeat the spot, but the third go at it ends with Allie grabbing Bates' finger mid-shush and taking her down with a snapmare. Allie stomps on Bates' finger, prompting Bates to roll out of the ring. Allie shushes Bates to zero crowd reaction. Cut to backstage to show Brandi Rhodes, who would face Allie at Fight for the Fallen, watching the match. Bates rolls back in the ring and kicks Allie in the gut before hitting her with forearms. A bit of a clunky Irish whip ends with Allie jumping off the second rope and hitting a crossbody. Allie follows up with a Russian leg sweep for a near fall but gets tripped up by Avalon as he reads his book.
The distraction allows Bates to dropkick Allie to the outside. Bates rolls Allie back in the ring and hits a fisherman's suplex, followed by a Northern Lights suplex for a near fall. Avalon tries to instruct Bates, but that nearly gets her rolled up by Allie, who only gets a two. Bates regains control and locks in the Rings of Saturn submission, forcibly shushing her while she grabs her hair. The two trade chops in the corner, but Bates keeps control with a shotgun dropkick and a double knee strike in the corner for a near fall. Bates goes for a double underhook, but Allie blocks it and hits a neckbreaker, leaving both women down.
Allie fires up, striking away at Bates before hitting a running back elbow, a running forearm, and a sliding forearm in the corner for a near fall. Allie goes for a fireman's carry, but Bates slides out before blocking Allie's attempt at a superkick, which she calls the BSE (Best Superkick Ever), and hitting a lung blower. Bates hits a double underhook facebuster (i.e. the Pedigree), but Allie kicks out. Avalon hops up on the apron, but a miscommunication sees Bates walk toward him as Avalon tosses his book to her. The book flies over to Allie, who tosses it to Bates before hitting the BSE for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Very forgettable match with a few clunky moments. I don't think either Allie or Bates are bad wrestlers, but this is one of the lesser showings. Also, would've liked a non-screwy finish here. Again, I don't dislike Leva Bates...but it's a librarian gimmick. You can have them take a clean loss, especially if the person she's facing is going on to face someone who's clearly positioned as a prominent woman in the company like Brandi. Overall, nothing really worth watching.

Match #2: Michael Nakazawa vs Alex Jebailey

Now it's time to get weird. Match #2 on this post is Michael Nakazawa vs Alex Jebailey in a Hardcore match. This match was kind of half-recommended by a frequent contributor to the suggestions Otter Empire the last time I covered an AEW match, so I figured now would be a good time to cover it here. Nakazawa is a former regular in Japan's comedy-based DDT Pro-Wrestling. Having studied abroad in the United States, Nakazawa is a fluent English speaker and acted as an interpreter for English-speaking wrestlers in Japan. It's through this role that he met Kenny Omega, and that friendship led to him getting a spot in AEW. Now, Alex Jebailey is a completely different story. Jebailey is not a wrestler, so why is he wrestling here? Well, Fyter Fest wasn't just an AEW show, as they partnered with Community Effort Orlando, a fighting video game event organized by Jebailey. This isn't CEO's first wrestling show either, as they partnered with New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 2018 for When Worlds Collide, primarily thanks to massive gamer nerd Kenny Omega. Jebailey and Nakazawa also faced off on that show, with Jebailey getting the win. So yeah, this is 100% something for the live crowd, who are likely a combination of wrestling fans and people who like fighting games & pro-wrestling, and nobody else. I'm not someone who knocks AEW for not appealing to a "casual audience", but I'll admit this match is for a really niche group. I'm someone who enjoys fighting games (I dedicated an embarrassing amount of my youth to playing Soulcalibur II), but even I didn't know about CEO or Jebailey before this. Let's just get into this.
Nakazawa comes out first, bottles of baby oil in hand. Jebailey soon follows, with Excalibur saying that this will be the "one time you'll see indulgent nepotism in All Elite Wrestling." Nakazawa takes the mic and calls Jebailey "Mr. Cripple" due to Jebailey injuring his leg in their last match. Nakazawa says Jebailey cheated last year and that CEO sucks and is worse than EVO, aka the Evolution Championship Series, which is another fighting game event. Oh my god, I get that Kenny and the Bucks like video games, but you're allocating time on your wrestling show to fighting game tournament banter. Please stop. Nakazawa quickly kicks Jebailey's leg before the bell rings. Jebailey fires back with forearms that do not look good. Pretty much none of Jebailey's offense looks good, so I'm just going to mention it now instead of every time his bad offense happens. Nakazawa locks in a headlock. Jebailey regains control with a hip toss before hitting a body slam. Jebailey locks in a waistlock, only for Nakazawa to fish a bottle of baby oil out of his trunks, covering himself in oil before slipping out. Nakazawa then covers the canvas in oil, causing Jebailey and referee Bryce Remsburg to slip. In a fun little spot, Nakazawa covers Jebailey's stomach in oil, then jumps feet first onto his stomach for a stomp, and then slips into a senton. That was creative, I liked that.
Jebailey rolls out of the ring, taking control when he throws Nakazawa into the guard rail after he follows him out. Jebailey then grabs a comically oversized clipboard from the crowd before breaking it over his head. He then grabs a fighting gamepad from someone in the crowd. Excalibur says that the person who gave it to him is Justin Wong, who is a professional Street Fighter & Marvel vs Capcom player, and he says it like that is common knowledge. I had to Google who that is. This must be how non-American fans feel whenever an American athlete like Trae Young shows up on a WWE show. Jebailey hits Nakazawa with the gamepad before making the cover for a near fall. Nakazawa leaves the ring and retreats to the stage, where there is an inflatable pool that Jebailey promptly tries to drown Nakazawa in.
This, however, allows Nakazawa to spit water into Jebailey's eyes before beating him with an inflatable flamingo.
Nakazawa tries to dump Jebailey into the pool, but Jebailey slips out and body slams Nakazawa into the pool. Jebailey drags Nakazawa back to the ring, where he throws in several weapons, including a table and a GameCube controller. Nakazawa, however, gains the upper hand by hitting Jebailey with the controller and choking him with the cord. That's where Jebailey slipped up, should've sprung for a Wavebird. No wires. Nakazawa tries to suplex Jebailey, but Jebailey blocks it and tries to suplex Nakazawa from the apron through the table. Nakazawa blocks that, however, and bites Jebailey's forehead before throwing Remsburg into him and spearing Jebailey through the ropes and through the table. Props to the non-wrestler Jebailey for taking a bump like that. And props to Nakazawa for giving this comedy match everything he's got.
Nakazawa rolls Jebailey back into the ring and makes the cover, but then opts to beat Jebailey with a kendo stick. Nakazawa then pulls a thong he is wearing under his trunks off without taking off his trunks. I'm not screenshotting that. Not even gonna test it. Nakazawa wraps the thong around his hand and sets up for Venom's Tentacles, aka a claw hold, but Jebailey avoids it and, after a brief pause to get set, hits a German suplex that Nakazawa lands on his head for. Again, tons of credit to Michael Nakazawa, the man is not half-assing this incredibly silly match.
Jebailey goes back under the ring and pulls out a bag full of arcade buttons. Nakazawa tries to get the jump and powerbomb Jebailey onto the buttons, but Jebailey counters and backdrops Nakazawa onto the buttons. Jebailey hits Nakazawa with the kendo stick until Nakazawa dodges a shot. However, Jebailey avoids Nakazawa's attempts at Venom's Tentacles, causing Nakazawa to put the hold on Bryce Remsburg. Jebailey takes the opportunity to kick Nakazawa in the dick and roll him up with a cradle pin, but Remsburg is busy selling the thong to the face to count the pin. He eventually does, only for Nakazawa to put on Venom's Tentacles and reverse the pin, allowing him to get the cover and the three for the win. Commentator Logan Sama ends with the line of the night; "There's no way he's affected by the smell of that thong, he's been running Smash tournaments for years. He must be immune by now."

The Verdict

There are some fun moments, and I understand that Jebailey is not a trained wrestler and this is a silly, low-stakes match, but this is still pretty rough. The vast majority of Jebailey's offense did not look good, and it never gets better. If there is anything positive I can say about this, it's that the crowd was definitely into it. You could literally only have this match in front of this kind of crowd. Overall, not something I'd ever really want to watch again, but not the worst thing I've ever seen.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. I'll have another entry in the series in two weeks...BUT be sure to come back on July 4th when I take a look at five matches from one of WWE's worst ever pay-per-views; a show with a distinctly American theme to it. Until then...

  1. I'm predicting it'll be the Great American Bash from 2004

theres another match i'm surprised that hasn't made the list yet and thats the infamous shark cage match between Chief Jay Strongbow and Don Kent

    1. It is Great American Bash '04.
As for the Shark Cage match, someone has recommended it in the past, but I didn't cover it mainly because I've never been able to find out when the match actually took place or on what show. Now that two people have recommended it, I think I'll have to cover it now.

    2. I'm not surprised since it was one of WWE's worst ppvs's of all time and was remembered for Undertaker unnecessarily chose to kill Paul Bearer despite mostly trying to save him and still winning his match.

As for the match itself I looked it up on Google and on a website called thechairshot.com the match took place in 1977 in Detroit and the promotion that made this match happen was known as Big Time Wrestling owned by the Original Sheik

  2. I've never been able to get behind Allie as a wrestler. I don't know what the problem is, but everytime she has a match in AEW I seriously consider if I should stop watching the show. And Leva is Leva, she's good at what she does.

I'm the one who suggested Marti vs Rachel by the way. Finally decided to make an account around here after following your blog for about a year.

    1. Allie can have her moments (that Tag Street Fight with Penelope Ford vs Anna Jay & Tay Conti in particular was great) but I don't think she's on the level of some of the other women in AEW like Thunder Rosa or Athena.

    2. Here's a timely one. PWG recently had their first women's wrestling match for 12 years. The previous women's match was Candice LeRae vs. Christina Von Eerie at PWG DIO!. It was apparently so bad that Super Dragon gave up on women's wrestling entirely for a decade. But it couldn't be that bad, could it...?

    3. That's an interesting one I'll have to take a look at. I actually didn't know that PWG didn't book straight-up women's matches for so long, I had always thought that they just had a fully intergender (like Lucha Underground did) based on how prevalent Candice was during her time there. But yeah, I'll definitely take a look at it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
