Worst in the World: Konnan vs Stevie Ray-Slamboree 1999

So I made, for lack of a better term, a goof...Last year, I got a comment from an anonymous user requesting I cover Konnan vs Stevie Ray from Slamboree 1999, a rematch from their match at World War 3 1998 that I'd already covered....and then I forgot about it. Maybe it was because they accidentally said the match was at Uncensored 1999 and when I looked to find it on the card it wasn't there (and then I didn't look further than that), but whatever it was, it completely slipped my mind. If you're the person who recommended this match, I apologize for accidentally ignoring it, here is my consolation. Konnan and Stevie Ray had a bland, boring match at World War 3, but WCW decided that once wasn't enough for these two, so they got another pay-per-view match at Slamboree. This time, however, it wouldn't be part of the nWo in-fighting angle, as nWo Hollywood and nWo Wolfpac had joined back together following the Fingerpoke of Doom earlier that year. Konnan, however, was kicked out of the group when he stood by Rey Mysterio Jr., who was attacked by the group after he refused to disband the Latino World Order. This was after Mysterio was forced to join the group after feuding with them...I don't know, it doesn't really make sense. Konnan then feuded with various members of the nWo in 1999, losing to Lex Luger at Souled Out and to the Outsiders when he teamed with Mysterio at SuperBrawl, but he did beat Disco Inferno at Spring Stampede...so there's that...and now's he's facing the leader of the nWo Black & White (the nWo B-Team) in Stevie Ray. And what did that amount to? A quarter-star from Dave Meltzer, a 1.83 rating on Cagematch.net, the title of "one of the worst matches in the history of pay-per-view" from the co-host of every former wrestler's podcast Conrad Thompson, and a match so forgettable that you wouldn't believe how hard it was to find a picture of it on the Internet (which I had to do since Peacock doesn't allow screenshots.) Let's get into this.
Stevie Ray is out first, accompanied by his fellow Black & White members Vincent (Virgil) and Horace Hogan, while Konnan enters alone. In one of the wilder moments I've seen on pay-per-view, Konnan runs through his pre-match call and response before saying that ring announcer David Penzer is going to toss his salad. Vincent or Horace might've been at ringside behind him, but it definitely looks like Konnan points at Penzer when he says it. David Penzer didn't do anything to him and Konnan just told him to eat his ass. The match starts with Stevie Ray beating down Konnan in the corner. Stevie continues to stomp away at Konnan, but Konnan dodges a corner splash and goes right to the 10 punches in the corner. Konnan follows up with a bulldog and a basement dropkick, but the pinfall attempt sees Vincent hop up on the apron to distract referee Mickie Jay. Konnan gets Vincent off the apron, but it leaves him open to a superkick from Stevie. Stevie tosses Konnan out of the ring, leaving him open to a double team from Vincent & Horace while Stevie distracts the referee. Horace throws Konnan back into the ring for Stevie to floor him with a clothesline.
Stevie follows up with a forearm drop for a two count. Stevie slaps on a chinlock, but Konnan starts to fire up, which prompts some funny alarmed faces from Stevie. Konnan fights to his feet, but a very sloppy exchange ends with Stevie clotheslining K-Dogg on the third try after the two fail to get into position on two separate attempts. Stevie kneels on Konnan's face before going back to the chinlock. Konnan powers out again, but Stevie ducks a clothesline and floors Konnan with a back elbow. Stevie follows up with a suplex for a near fall before hitting a body slam and going to the second rope (the most dangerous rope.) Stevie's diving double axe handle gets countered with a boot to the face, allowing Konnan to run wild and hit a rolling clothesline. Konnan Irish whips Stevie into the ropes and tries to leapfrog over him, but doesn't quite get high enough. Konnan follows up with facebuster, which Stevie takes just about entirely on his knees. Vincent hops up on the ring apron and quickly gets knocked down by Konnan. However, the distraction allows Horace to trip Konnan when he tries to hit the ropes, leaving him open to a leg drop from Stevie. Zero chance Hulk Hogan OK'd that.
Unmasked Rey Mysterio Jr. runs down to try to help his future Filthy Animals teammate, but is quickly overwhelmed by Vincent & Horace. Vincent tries to hold Mysterio in place for Horace to hit, but Mysterio dodges it, causing Vincent to take the shot. And by that I mean Mysterio ducks way too soon, prompting the three to very blatantly just re-do the spot. Mysterio takes out Horace with a dropkick off the ring apron as Stevie sets up for a double underhook suplex or powerbomb, but Mysterio distracts him by hopping onto the top rope. The referee is too focused on Horace & Vincent to see Mysterio dive off the top rope for a hurricanrana, but Stevie catches him. Konnan, however, rolls up Stevie for the three and the win.

The Verdict

Nowhere near the worst pay-per-view match I've ever seen, but this is still a rough outing. It's a short match, but there are still a couple of blown spots and there's really nothing done well enough to warrant a watch. It's a complete nothing match.

  1. I wonder how it felt to be the leader of the nWo B-team.

Have you done Marty Belle vs Rachel Evers (Ellering) from the first Mae Young Classic?

    1. It's gotta be a mixed bag. Like it's probably cool to be a part of the top stable in the company, but I can't imagine being labeled the "leader" of the less important part of the group is much of a perk.
Also, I have not covered Marti Belle vs Rachel Evers yet. Now that you've reminded me of it, I'll be sure to add it to the list. Thanks for the suggestion!

  2. Here's one I'm positively stunned hasn't yet made it in. Sting vs. Lex Luger from WWA Retribution (2001). Featuring a Luger who seems to be aspiring to do as little wrestling as possible, and doing the same screwjob finish TWICE in a row in the same match.

    3. I figured it'd be a good candidate for your list since WWE tried to mislead viewers into thinking it was a battle royal dedicated to The Rock but it was just about product placement

    1. Not 100% sure but I think it has something to do with encryption technology that blocks screenshots & screen recordings. The WWE Network doesn't have that (at least it didn't when it was available in the U.S.) and Peacock allowed them at first, but now it'll just give me a black screen if I try to screenshot & screen record.

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
