Worst in the World: Mabel: King Nothing

(NOTE: Hey everyone, before I start this post, I just wanted to let everyone know what's coming up on the site for October. Starting in two weeks, I'll be going to a weekly schedule for the entire month, with every post centered around WCW. It's gonna be a "Very WCW October." So with that out of the way, onto the post.)
1995 was a rough year for the WWF. With Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage gone, the company badly needs a new top babyface. The push for Lex Luger to take that spot flopped hard, so now Diesel has been the nod as the company's new front runner. But who will he face? Ric Flair is long gone by 1995, having returned to WCW. The Ludvig Borga experiment failed pretty quickly, Sycho Sid has been in and out of the company, and Yokozuna, while talented, is heavily hindered by his ever-growing weight issues. Shawn Michaels & Bret Hart have each had their shot, and while they did have The Undertaker, it was clear the field of challengers was thin. They were going to have to build up a new top-level heel. But it couldn't just be anybody. Diesel is a big guy a 6'10, most people don't look like credible threats compared to him. The WWF needed someone big, and they had just the person in mind...Mabel, from Men on a Misson.
There were two major roadblocks in the way of Mabel's rapid ascent to the main event. The first was that Mabel had been a less-than-serious character for his entire WWF career up to that point. Men on a Mission weren't outright comedy characters, but it's not like they were genuine threats in the tag division either. Mabel was one of the four Doinks not even two years prior to this, and now he's supposed to be a contender for the WWF Championship? It was always going to be an uphill battle, and that doesn't even take into account the second issue; Mabel just wasn't all that good. I get that wrestling in the 90s was far different than the high work rate, spot-heavy style of today, but even then, Mabel's lumbering offense was a chore to watch. But what's even worse than being bad? Being dangerous. Kevin Nash (aka Diesel) has since done interviews saying Mabel had injured multiple people in the lead-up to their title match. It was abundantly clear that making him a main eventer would be pushing Mabel well beyond his abilities.
But none of that was enough to stop the WWF from pushing forward, and what better way to jumpstart that push than with the King of the Ring tournament. The last two years have seen the tournament elevate the stock of the winners in Bret Hart in 1993 and Owen Hart in 1994, so why wouldn't it work for Mabel? What could possibly go wrong?...A lot. Mabel's run as King of the Ring is infamous nowadays, and is widely considered the worst run in the history of the gimmick. The only two who can be considered in competition with Mabel are Billy Gunn in 1999, and Bad News Barrett in 2015. But Gunn's push seemed to be abandoned quickly when the WWF just let The Rock verbally bury him on route to their SummerSlam match, while Barrett being given the crown seemed like a thing the company did just to do it and never really even bothered to make him look good throughout his run (which, if we're being honest, could sum up a lot of Wade Barrett's WWE career.) With Mabel, the company put A LOT of effort behind making him a big deal, but it failed big time. Today, I'll be going through that failure and taking a look at the beginning, the middle, and the end of the reign of King Mabel

Match #1: The Coronation

The reign of King Mabel officially began at the 1995 King of the Ring event, an event that featured arguably the worst bracket in the history of the tournament. The Roadie, aka Road Dogg during his stint as Jeff Jarrett's roadie, made the semifinals...THE ROADIE. Mabel had advanced past the first round following a dud of a match with The Undertaker before getting a BYE past the semifinals thanks to Shawn Michaels and Kama going to a time limit draw. The only one standing in the way of Mabel becoming King of the Ring was my least favorite wrestler of all time, Savio Vega. Vega, who had previously worked under a mask as Kwang, debuted under this gimmick just a month prior at the inaugural In Your House, entering from the crowd & saving Razor Ramon from a 2-on-1 attack from Jeff Jarrett & The Roadie, with Ramon saying he was a childhood friend. Vega would wrestle just a handful of matches before he was very suddenly thrust into a prominent spot in the King of the Ring tournament, replacing Ramon after he went down with an injury. Vega actually qualified for the tournament by beating Irwin R. Schyster on the Free for All (the pre-show) prior to the show, before beating Yokozuna in the first round and the Roadie in the semifinals. The WWF obviously tried their damnedest to get Vega over by having him fight an uphill battle to win the tournament, especially compared to Mabel, but even then, it was still a pretty big ask for the crowd to get behind someone they were just introduced to a month ago to win a major tournament in the company, just because he was Razor Ramon's friend. An out-of-the-blue babyface vs a barely credible tag guy. This was the finals of a King of the Ring tournament. The New Generation was an awful time to be alive. Maybe they could've made up for this lackluster final with a good match, but its negative one-star rating from Dave Meltzer and 1.40 rating on Cagematch.net should tell you all you need to know.
Mabel makes his way through the double doors on the stage, accompanied by Mo. Also present as the men opening the doors are Matt & Jeff Hardy, almost three years before they'd properly debut for the company.
Vince McMahon lays on the praise of Savio Vega hard at this time, comparing Vega's journey to the finals to Rocky Balboa (the event was in Philadelphia.) The crowd is pretty quiet for Mabel's entrance, and they don't really get more enthusiastic when Vega comes out, accompanied by Razor Ramon. The match starts with a lock-up, which Mabel quickly shoves Vega out of. They repeat the spot before Mabel goes for a corner splash, which Vega dodges. Vega strikes away at Mabel in the corner, chopping him multiple times before hitting ten punches in the corner. Mabel counters an Irish whip across the ring, but Vega dodges a follow-up clothesline and goes back to striking away at the big man. Mabel, however, takes control with an eye rake before hitting a body slam.
Mabel tries to follow up with an elbow drop, but Vega dodges it and clotheslines Mabel out of the ring. Mabel drags Vega out of the ring and tries to slam his head into the ring steps, but Vega blocks it before slamming Mabel's head into the post. Mabel finally takes control when he throws Vega into the steps, opting for a count-out win, but Vega quickly gets back in the ring. Mabel chokes Vega against the ropes by leaning on him before whipping Vega into the corner. Mabel follows up with a bear hug that goes on for TWO STRAIGHT MINUTES. Vega doesn't start to fight out of the hold until a minute and a half, so there are literally just 90 seconds of the two standing in the middle of the ring. The referee eventually raises & drops Vega's arm three times, but Vega springs to life and starts to fight out of the hold. Mabel shuts down the comeback with a headbutt before whipping Vega across the ring and...going right back to the bearhug. Vega thankfully fights out of this one quickly with a head clap, but Mabel keeps control with a jumping clothesline for a near fall. I say "jumping" but he gets a maximum of three inches off the ground.
Mabel locks in a headlock, giving us another whole minute of rest spots before Vega fights to his feet. Mabel keeps control with corner splashes. Around this time, the Philadelphia crowd starts very clearly chanting for ECW. Yeah, the goal of getting Savio Vega over in the short amount of time they had has clearly not worked. Mabel whips Vega across the ring, but Vega dodges a follow-up corner splash and rolls up Mabel for a near fall. Vega follows up with a jumping spinning heel kick, but Mabel kicks out. Vega tries to follow up with a crossbody, but Mabel catches him and slams him down, but Vega kicks out. Mabel, however, wastes no time hitting a splash for the three, the win, and the crown. After the match, Mo taunts a downed Vega, prompting Ramon to try to fight the two, only to get double-teamed as Mabel targets his injured ribs. Mabel follows up with a body slam, an elbow drop, and a follow-up second elbow drop. The 1-2-3 Kid runs down to make the save (after Ramon's already been beaten up pretty badly) and hits Mo with a spinning heel kick before taking the fight to Mabel. Mo proceeds to recover in record time, however, attacking the Kid from behind and holding him in place for Mabel to hit another second rope elbow drop. A weird little moment there.
Referee's run down to prevent another elbow drop, prompting Mabel & Mo to head up to the throne on stage. Mo sends Todd Pettengill away before putting the robe on Mabel and giving him a sword. Mo then takes a scroll and reads the proclamation as fans throw trash at Mabel, including one dickhead who nails him right in the head. Mo finally puts the crown on Mabel's head as Vega, Ramon, and the Kid tries to rush the throne, only to be stopped by referees. With perfect comedic timing, the show then cuts backstage to Jerry Lawler throwing up in the bathroom. It's poetic, really.

The Verdict

Very boring. Quite literally, nearly half of this match is just rest holds. It's painfully uninteresting. Genuinely, the last 40 seconds or so is really the only enjoyable part of the match. Skip this match at all costs.

Match #2: The Crusade

With the crown on his head, King Mabel was born, and now he would be embarking on a quest for another piece of gold; the WWF Championship held by Diesel. Mabel made his intentions known when he attacked Diesel during his Lumberjack title defense at In Your House 2. The two were set to face off for the title in the main event of SummerSlam 1995. The crowing of King Mabel was a dud of a match, would the biggest match of his career go any better? Not really, as it holds just a half-star rating from Meltzer and a 1.39 rating on Cagematch. Let's get into this.
With Sir Mo by his side, King Mabel is out first, being carried to the ring on a throne.
It must be miserable being one of the local talents carrying him like that. We then get a promo backstage from Diesel, who says he's gonna get medieval on Mabel. Well, it's not the worst promo about going medieval on someone. Diesel then makes his way out to the ring and hands Earl Hebner the belt, only for Mabel to steal it and pose with it. The match starts with Diesel striking away at Mabel, only for Mabel to floor him with a shoulder block. Mabel follows up with a second shoulder block before ramming Diesel's head into the top turnbuckle. Mabel then chops Diesel before choking him, but Diesel turns the tables when he reverses an Irish whip and hits a big clothesline in the corner. Diesel follows up with a second clothesline before elbowing him in the corner. Diesel goes for a body slam, but Mabel doesn't budge, allowing Mabel to strike him down.
Diesel fights back, striking at Mabel before he sends him out of the ring with a shoulder tackle to the back. In what might be the most surprising spots I've seen in a while, Diesel hits a dive over the top onto Mabel at ringside. Kevin Nash did a dive. Aside from him bumping off a ladder at TLC 2011, that's the craziest spot I've seen Kevin Nash do. Mabel regains control of the match when he whips Diesel into the ring post, but Diesel cuts off the comeback when he blocks a Mabel splash into the post with a big boot. Back in the ring, Diesel beats down Mabel, only for Mabel to send Diesel into the corner (which got exposed off camera so I have no idea when it happened) before hitting a side slam for a near fall. And then it happens. You know what I'm talking about.
Mabel proceeds to deliver an incredibly reckless & dangerous sit-down splash on Diesel's back. Unlike when someone like Earthquake does it and lands on their feet to minimize how much weight actually comes down on their opponent, Mabel kicks his legs out and crushes Diesel with all the 500+ pounds of his body. The result was Nash suffering a badly strained abdomen. It's rough to watch, and despite Diesel's attempts to muffle himself, you can pretty clearly hear him yell out "GOD DAMMIT MABEL" and quite a few "FUCK"s right after it happens.
Mabel then locks in an incredibly lazy camel clutch as Diesel fights to his feet, only for Mabel to ram into the exposed turnbuckle. Mabel follows up with a body slam, only to then just mow over the referee as he goes for an elbow drop, which Diesel dodges. I'd say it was an accident, but Mabel could clearly see him and just runs him over anyway. This allows Sir Mo to run in, allowing the Men on a Mission to double-team him until Lex Luger runs down to make the save...only for Diesel to, for quite literally no reason, attack Luger and clothesline him out of the ring. It is hilarious. Might rival Brian Kendrick & Paul London getting Pedigreed by Triple H for the worst instance of a babyface getting treated like a chump by another babyface.
Mabel follows this up by clotheslining Diesel out of the ring before following him out and hitting a leg drop. Mo rolls Diesel back in the ring, only for him to be chased to the back by Luger. Say goodbye to Luger, cause this confusing run-in was his final televised appearance in the WWF. He'd leave to go back to WCW eight days after SummerSlam. Getting punked out for no reason by another babyface, what a way to go. Back in the ring, Mabel hits a belly-to-belly suplex and makes the cover, but Diesel kicks out. Mabel goes to the second rope for a diving splash, which Diesel just narrowly avoids. Like, if he had moved just a quarter of a second later, he would've been gotten squashed. Diesel then, because there was a less than 0% chance of him hitting a Jackknife on Mabel, goes to the second rope and hits a diving clothesline for the three and the win to retain his title.

The Verdict

For the most part, the match is not the worst thing I've ever seen. Sure, it's a pretty standard big man vs big man match, but most of the match isn't too bad, and Diesel put on a fairly decent performance. That being said, that sit-down splash is horrible to watch. It's not all that surprising that this incident not only likely ended any chance Mabel had as a main eventer, but very nearly cost him his job according to Kevin Nash. On top of that, the weird run-in from Luger really didn't make a lot of sense. Overall, most of the match is fairly uneventful, but the ending portion really knocks it down a bit in my book.

Match #3: The Collapse

As I mentioned before, King Mabel's time as a challenger for the world title came to a screeching halt following SummerSlam and the sitdown splash that injured the company's top babyface. However, his time in the upper ranks of the WWF roster were not over, as he was soon put into a feud with The Undertaker. Again, as I mentioned, Mabel had beaten Taker in the first round of the King of the Ring en route to winning the tournament. While he was clearly demoted following SummerSlam, he could've done a lot worse than feuding with one of the company's top names, and a strong feud could've possibly elevated him so long as he didn't injure The Undertaker through his own recklessness. Mabel then proceeded to injure The Undertaker through his own recklessness. During a post-match beatdown where Mabel attacked Taker, Mabel delivered a series of leg drops to Taker. However, because Mabel landed his leg across Taker's face instead of his chest, Taker suffered an orbital bone fracture that sidelined him for two months. If Mabel's time in the WWF wasn't coming to an end before that, this all but confirmed it, with his Casket match against Taker at In Your House 5: Season's Beatings being his final singles match on pay-per-view until he returned as Viscera. Admittedly, it doesn't have the worst ratings, earning a star and a half from Meltzer and a 3.72 rating on Cagematch, but it's still a poor showing. Let's get into this.
During The Undertaker's entrance, we get a good look at the protective face mask Taker wore for a bit after his orbital bone fracture.
I think it looks awesome, like a full version of the Phantom of the Opera's mask. Mabel dips out of the ring, walking away from Taker when he follows him out. When Mabel re-enters the ring and Taker follows him in, Mabel pounces on him, headbutting Taker repeatedly. Taker fights back, however, with strikes of his own, sending Mabel into the corner where he promptly chokes him. Taker follows up by whipping Mabel to the opposite corner and splashing him. Mabel, however, fires back by reversing an Irish whip, sending Taker into the opposite corner before hitting a side slam, only for Taker to sit right up. Mabel responds by clotheslining Taker, but Taker sits up again. Mabel follows up with a bodyslam and goes for the second rope for a splash, but in a cool spot, Taker sits up just in time to dodge the splash.
Taker strikes away at Mabel, but a distraction from Mo allows Mabel to hit a belly-to-belly suplex before following up with a leg drop. I am stunned that Taker let Mabel hit a leg drop on him after what happened the last time he did that. Mabel follows up with a splash before Mo drags Taker out of the ring, carrying him over to the casket. Mo drops Taker in the casket and lets Mabel go to shut the lid, but Taker reaches up and keeps the casket open. Taker goes back to striking away at Mabel, finally knocking him off his feet with a jumping clothesline. Taker follows up with a chokeslam before hitting a big boot, sending Mabel through the ropes and into the casket. Taker goes to shut the lid, but Mo runs in to stop him, even hitting him with the giant chain that Kama made out of Paul Bearer's urn. It has no effect, and Taker hits a falling chokeslam on Mo before rolling him into the casket as well. Taker reaches into the casket, grabbing the chain.
Vince McMahon on commentary says it's because it's made out of the urn, but I contend that The Undertaker, even as an undead mortician with supernatural powers, knows the importance of having quality drip. Taker finally slams the casket shut for the win.

The Verdict

Far better than their match at King of the Ring, but still not a very good match. Outside of the sit-up to avoid the splash, there's really nothing that stands out. It's mostly just strikes with a few actual moves in between. Not even close to the worst match I've ever seen, but it's still a lackluster affair.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to share if you enjoyed and leave any suggestions for matches you'd like to see covered on the Worst in the World in the comments. As I mentioned, in two weeks I'll be starting "A Very WCW October", where I'll be going to a weekly schedule for the entire month. And what better place to start than with an episode of Thunder in 2000, where I'll be taking a look at the WCW's attempt to have their own Royal Rumble. Stay tuned.

  1. I have a feeling that this episode of Thunder is the one they did New York Rules if it's true than I can't wait to see what you have to say about it.

I have a request for you and that is the Corporate Money in the Bank match from 2020

    1. Close. It's the Countdown to Armageddon match WCW did in Australia. New York Rules would've been a good one for this month (I honestly forgot their was a battle royal on that show) but I already had this month planned out before that episode got recommended.
And I will cover the Corporate Money in the Bank match. I know a lot of people enjoyed that match, but I'm not a fan of it. Thanks for the suggestion!

    2. I'll have to look it up considering it's WCW 2000!

To be honest I used to like this match but nowadays find this match to be meh, while I do appreciate them trying something new unfortunately the match was mainly hindered by uninspired Looney Tunes like shenanigans, unnecessary cameos (looking at you Doink imposter) and the MITB winners not doing much afterwards ( Otis in catering before losing the contract to Miz and Asuka being overshadowed) the only moment I found funny was AJ Styles getting PTSD from entering a room with Undertaker decor in it. You're welcome man, it's been fun doing this!

  2. Bing bong it is Frost again, got an idea for you: a further study in to how two wrestlers can have an amazing match against each other and also have an awful match against each other. Hogan and Warrior had their classic together, and they also had their bomb together. My recommendation has a bit of a different angle to it: Cody Rhodes vs Dustin Rhodes at Double or Nothing was a well-received match, but if you go back to Fastlane in 2015 they did not have a good match as Goldust and Stardust against each other.

Also, looking forward to WCW Month! It should be very interesting, especially the Australia episode. Thank you as always!

    1. That's a good one to take a look at. It's pretty crazy WWE didn't really seem to want to anything serious with a Cody-Dustin feud, especially with how well their match in AEW went down. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to the list.

    2. Yeah WWE missed the boat with the Cody/Goldust feud it only took AEW to actually do it right.

  3. I think Mabel should of fought Shawn Michaels in the finals instead of Savio Vega because I can see Michaels getting a somewhat watchable match out of Mable considering how good he is compared to Vega.

    1. True but at the same time I know for a fact he wouldve injured Shawn and knowing how bad his back injury in 97, that thought honestly scares me. Even if Shawn was okay Mabel wouldn't survive a day after that knowing Shawn's politics at the time

    2. You make a pretty good there if he would of injured Shawn not only would WWE find three of their top major players out because of Mabel's recklessness (Undertaker, HBK and Diesel) which would of made things much worse for the company since they were at an all time low in 95 but, HBK would of gotten Mabel fired immediately for it. Though WWE should never of tried to push Mabel regardless.

    3. Yeah, Shawn probably could've gotten a better match out of Mabel, but like Otter Empire said, I can't imagine it would go well safety wise. Either Shawn gets injured or he almost does, and either way Mabel would probably lose his job. Kevin Nash has said that Vince was ready to fire Mabel after the SummerSlam match because of the sit-down splash, but that Nash himself stepped in to convince him otherwise. If that's true, I can't imagine Shawn would've done the same, given everything we know about him at the time.

    4. Yeah considering we are talking about 90's HBK it would be no surprise if he got Mabel fired for injuring him if they did have a match.

    1. Or the “My Hole” match vs Lana!

    2. I'll take a look at both. A bit related, I was totally expecting to cover Nia & Lana's match from AOP's promotion Wrestling Entertainment Series as soon as that match got announced (that's probably unfair, but my expectations for that match were very low), but obviously that whole show never ended up happening. But yes, I will cover both. Thanks for the suggestions!

Worst in the World: The Gimmick Battle Royal-WrestleMania X-Seven

(Special thanks to Frost for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) WrestleMania X-Seven. Heavily considered the not just the best WrestleMania, but the greatest wrestling show of all time, WrestleMania X-Seven took place during the hottest period in the WWF's history, and features just about every one of the hottest acts in wrestling at the time. An undercard featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, William Regal, Kane, and the Big Show. One of the biggest female stars in the history of wrestling in Chyna. A killer TLC match between the Dudley Boyz, the Hardy Boyz, and Edge & Christian. A wild brawl between The Undertaker and Triple H. A massive main event between Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Hell, even the father vs son Street Fight between Vince & Shane McMahon. It's a star-studded affair. However, there's one match that sticks out like

Worst in the World: The Last Rites Match-TNA Destination X 2007

(Special thanks to an anonymous user for suggesting this match. If you'd like to see a match covered on the Worst in the World, leave a comment down below.) An often discussed aspect of professional wrestling is the backstage politicking of Hulk Hogan. Throughout his career as a major attraction in wrestling, Hogan's philosophy has always been to protect Hulk Hogan...OK, sometimes he'd help Ed Leslie, but most of the time it was to protect Hulk Hogan. Because of that philosophy and Hogan's influence as a top guy, there have been multiple instances where a company's booking and other wrestlers have suffered as a result. Would having Mr. Perfect win the 1990 Royal Rumble made sense and could have elevated a rising star and potentially created a new main event player? Yes, but that would require Hogan to not win, and that doesn't work for Hogan, so he wins the Rumble even though he doesn't need elevating. Would booking Randy Orton to beat Hogan at SummerSlam 20

Worst in the World: D-Generation X vs Brothers of Destruction-Crown Jewel

This match didn't need to happen. After Triple H and the Undertaker had one of the most brutally bad matches of 2018 at Super Show-Down not even a month earlier, nobody wanted to see them try to wrestle again. Also, nobody wanted to see Shawn Michaels come out of retirement after his fantastic sendoff in 2010, especially for a match like this. But here we are, Triple H & Shawn Michaels facing The Undertaker & Kane in 2018. The combined ages of these four at the time is 206. That's a number you'd expect to see from a match at Heroes of Wrestling. And anyone can come up with their own reason as to why this match is happening, but that would just be ignoring the actual reason. For those of you who don't know, Crown Jewel was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That might not seem like important information, but you can't really discuss this match without mentioning it. Despite the numerous reasons that running shows in Saudi Arabia is morally wrong (their abuse

Worst in the World: What is the Worst Wrestling Match of All Time?

Note: This series is based off a YouTube series " The Search for the Worst " by I Hate Everything, where he reviews every movie on IMDB's Bottom 100. It's a great, funny series and I'd recommend checking it out. Have you ever just thought to yourself "What is the worst match of all time?"? I don't mean something like a boring John Cena-Randy Orton match, I mean a match where the wrestlers have zero chemistry, little wrestling ability, or literally no idea what they are actually doing. I've thought about this for a while, and I've decided to finally figure it out. So I'm going to watch any match that is: a) A winner of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for the Worst Worked Match of the Year. or:  b) Listed on the 100 worst rated wrestling matches of all time on the Internet Wrestling Database .   (Note: Some matches appear on awards that aren't on the list.) There are 115 (EDIT: Now 99)  matches on here. I pu

Click the link here to vote in the poll and help decide the next edition of the Worst in the World. In 2014, Lucha Underground would premiere on the El Rey Network. Combining high-flying, death-defying wrestling with heavily stylized, cinematic segments that more closely resembled an AMC show than what you'd see on Monday Night Raw, Lucha Underground was a hit. Along with just being a unique, enjoyable wrestling experience, the show also provided a launching pad for several of the wrestlers, whether they be American wrestlers getting their biggest exposure to date in Ricochet (Prince Puma) and Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto), ex-WWE superstar John Morrison finding new life as Johnny Mundo, or luchadors like Pentagon Jr. and Fenix branching out into the United States. The latter is the case for Sexy Star. Debuting in 2006, Sexy Star would spend the first eight years of her career wrestl
